Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

    QUICK POLL, have F. Luis/Costa:

    (1) in: Lukaku, Baines; out Luis/Costa (4 point hit)

    (2) in: Aguero, Neil Taylor; out: Luis/Costa

    (3) in: Vertonghen; out: Luis (hope for the best with Costa; no point hit)

      a) marginally, because it gives you more money and costa actively injured.

      don't feel incredibly strongly, though

I went costa to aguero this week

When healthy, there is no doubt that he is the focus of their offense.

Whether he's fully up to speed this week or not is maybe in doubt, but against Stoke who may just now have Huth returning and who haven't totally gelled yet, I'll roll those dice.

If you're going to go with a cheap third striker, go all the way on that front...

      Costa/Diouf >> Aguero/VazTe

VazTe only 4.5 and has played 157 minutes of 180.

Not happy with team but damage is done.

    Elliot ■ Krul
    Moore ■ Debuchy ■ Ferdinand ■ Clyne ■ Chester
    Hazard ■ Ramsey ■ Mata ■ Albrighton ■ Sigurdsson
    Rooney ■ Dzeko ■ Jovetic

1 FT, £2.4m in the bank.

Any changes worth making or just hope for a Man City cricket score?

The reason why I don't wanna do what you've done, is that you'll have to pick one of Jovetic/Dzeko out for Ade (or get Sturridge with another FT) anyway...

The problem is you still won't know which one will play, so that will make it even harder to decide...

        I know 🙂

Jovetic ripping it & Ade failing would have been too damaging. Wish i got him at 7.9 but 0.1 is something to fall back on if he fails.

I've got krul. I'm not mad keen on our defence. We still look a bit weak too be honest. But for the price, and with our run of fixtures, they are probably worth buying. I would stay clear of dummet though

          weak how?

Colochinni is not the player he was. Willo was decent last season, but still no more than an average premier league player. Our first choice left back is injured until november. He's not even any good any way.

Dummet is an awful player. Haidara is much better (but not great). All toon fans would play haidara over dummet. Saying that, pardew doesn't know what he is doing and seems to like dummet, and so he may well keep his spot.

            1. China Mag
              • 15 Years
              11 years, 6 months ago

Saying that, pardew likes to play with two defenisive midfielders. Colback has been really good. So over our run of fixtures we SHOULD be able to keep a fair few clean sheets.

      Always go with your gut.

Yeah. I brought him in last week. Looks like Swansea are going to try the 4-4-2 with Bony and Gomis up top, which would bring Bony more minutes. Think I might stick with him! If he doesn't net this week, I might have to ship him out

      I'm going with Chadli personally.

I thought Lamela was great against QPR but I'm not yet sold. And, regarding Eriksen, I don't see him as a great FPL prospect yet. In time, yes, but not quite yet.

On the subject of 352 vs 343 this year.
Either strategy is perfectly viable, but the key factor for me is the quality of the benched player is far higher in the case of Naismith (5m) than any of the mid options at that level.
    So 352, for me.

besides having Sanchez makes it back into a 343 (this is a poor argument because, one could also use the argument to say you have a 334)

That is true, but, either way, more strikers is only beneficial if strikers are scoring well.

Good job having Sanchez. I'd love to.

Have a rush to captain Dummet...
Don't know why but i have the feeling he will score big, a goal or two and a couple of assists, clean sheet and all 3bps...
If he does, remember you read it here first!

    Last couple of questions lads

    1. Which combination seems better for the long term: Clyne-Rose or Yoshida-Dier
    2. Who to start: Chadli, Naismith or 4 defenders including a combination mentioned above?

Still not 100% sure whether to keep Berarinho or Naismith for the long term, ty.

    Who to bench 😯

    Clyne (WHU A)
    Dummet (CRY H)
    Cahill (EVE A)
    Debuchy (LEI A)

Not Cahill. I'd say Clyne personally, but I can see all of those teams easily conceding.

Thinking of WC'ing over the international break (so basically - gonna do it once the games start today).

    Currently my team is:

    De Gea / Gilks
    NTaylor / Clyne / Coloccini / Wisdom / Chester
    Siggy / Silva / Fab / Mata / Eriksen
    Rooney / Costa / Zamora

    With 1.4m ITB.

Would you WC at this point?

Had a bunch of changes I was gonna make personally. Was gonna remove DDG/Gilks for Krul/Mannone. Replace Colo with Dummett. Replace Chester with someone. Upgrade Eriksen to Ramsey, probably do Costa -> Aguero and do something about Zamora (probably Vaz Te, Naismith if affordable).

Manchester City have won seven successive league games at home to Stoke, including all six previous encounters in the Premier League without conceding a goal.

Sup everybody, just checking in to make sure I'm ready to go with this team tomorrow and I haven't missed anything that I should be doubtful or wary of!

    Krul

    Caulker * Clyne * Ivanovic

    Cesc * Ramsey (C) * Siggy * Lamela * Tadic

    Aguero * Jovetic (VC)

    Given *** Naismith * Chester * Moore

Naismith vs Tadic was very much 50/50...

I'd be more disappointed with Tadic bench points than I would be with Naismith for some reason though so that's swaying me slightly!
