Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

I agree. I watched both matches. Villa posed no challenge. Newcastle looked solid against City as well. I have watched Stoke as well and would take Newcastle's defense, although Stoke had been playing without Huth.

If you had Jovetic and were bringing in aguero who would you captain? Jovetic is almost certain to start and may play 90 mins. I would estimate aguero will play 30-60 mins.

In all seriousness.. Pelle has looked bright and has been getting into good positions for soton. They have an extraordinarily easy run of fixtures for the next couple months really and I reckon he will come good. Hammers attack is a mix-mash mess of muchness. I will happily go through the rest of the season without owning anyone from their front.

I haven't been around much, what's the general consensus regarding Aguero? Is he likely to start this week? Sorry if I sound like a broken record, just part of me feels as though I should grab Jovetic but have money in the bank for a direct upgrade to Aguero.

most feel he will play 60+ minutes. Jovetic likely to play 90 minutes this weekend but in the long run is more susceptible for rotation with Dzeko.

    At this stage I have:

    __________Krul/Mannone_________

    Coloccini, Caulker, Williams, Clyne, PVA

I'm in a similar boat. Jovetic vs. Bony.

I expect both to score big, but I really want to hold onto Ag too. I might try to fit all 3 in up front.

My replacement will be Larsson who I think could do quite well today. I would rather 90mins of him than a cameo from Costa.

I like Larsson to do well today as well (or tomorrow, since it's still Friday here...)
          QPR are dire

I hope QPR prove us right because I ditched Caulker this week. A few too many voices swayed me to have him in my team pre-season. I may start Larsson over Costa anyway as insane as that sounds but I think Everton may have learned a lesson from the Arsenal match. Get the lead and tighten up. They will be no pushovers.

    My team is as follows:

    KRUL MANNONE

    DUMMETT TAYLOR CLYNE HUTTON WISDOM

    SIGGY RAMSEY FABREGAS DIMARIA STERLING

    ADEBAYOR ROONEY JOVETIC

with 0.4 in the bank, is it a good move to upgrade Dummett and Taylor to Colocini and Williams, with downgrading DiMaria to Mata ?

yes I'm on WC, invested in Jovetic, Dier and Naistmith when they was still cheap 🙂 but living with Di Maria and 0.4 in the bank with three 4.0\4.1 budget defenders will not give me much flexibility in the team ? if I play with Mata I can get Lamela\Eriksen or De Jong at any time, what do you think ?

Your team is a bit SHOUTY.... 🙂
Apart from that, I think those defensive moves are probably not worth the effort.
Not sure that DiMaria to Mata is a downgrade, necessarily.
I just don't really know where DiMaria is going to fit on the field for United.

Mebbe some United fans have better insight. (If any of them are still alive after the midweek fiasco)

Oh I think that moving to Mata is reasonable. United will still score goals and he is likely to be in the midst of it because he doesn't really have a like-for-like replacement and van Gaal would seem to prefer to play with somebody in that spot. United will just continue to concede lots of goals. Lots. Go for it.

Also, since nobody is rising in price very rapidly, even if we are wrong and DiMaria explodes, (from a scoring perspective), you can probably still afford him. He's more likely to drop a bit from the present price, if I had to guess

Aguero in for Costa for a hit? Worth the gamble?

Aguero is Aguero and I'm not really certain about Costa playing the full 90 minutes. Home fixture vs Stoke should be juicy too.

Morning dzzz, have 2fts and confused

    Krul
Jones naylor Ferdinand --- Beardsley Chester
Mata Ramsey siggy eriksen --- albrigthon
    Dzeko costa Rooney

    Issues:
    - dzeko and/or costa may not play
    - have a weak bench in Beardsley (city), Chester (banned), albrighton ( starter?)
    - dont like eriksen...seems silvaesque

    Solution:
A: Chester >>> Bertrand/Kelly...my def rotations will remain intact but is Kelly nailed on? Don't wanna spend extra on saints def. Hull only have good fixtures in gw4 and 7 till gw14
    B: albrighton >> rodwell / jwp
    C: bardsley >> rose? Debuchy?

    Lloris (Gilks)
    Debuchy Clyne Cahill (Dummett) (Chester)
    Siggy Ramsey Hazard Sterling (Cattermole)
    Rooney Costa Berahino
