Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

I have Ramsey, Rooney and Jovetic in my team and really can't decide who to captain! The stats all suggest going for Jovetic but the pragmatist in me is saying Roonpig! Thoughts guys??

Anyone know the site Paul is referring to in the GW3 Scout Picks post? I'd like to be able to track "shots in the box" stat.

"The Foxes have conceded 21 shots inside the box so far – only Hull (24) have a poorer record."

How does this Super 10 look? It's a competition where I'm allowed to put double "signs" in 5 of the games, and the rest must only be one "sign"

Everton vs Chelsea = Draw or Chelsea win
Man City vs Stoke = Man City win
Newcastle vs Crystal Palace = Newcastle or draw
West Ham vs Southampton = West Ham win or draw
QPR vs Sunderland = Draw or Sunderland win
Swansea vs West Brom = Swansea win
Fulham vs Cardiff = Cardiff win
Derby vs Ipswich = Derby win
Norwich vs Bournemouth = Norwich win
Leeds vs Bolton = Leeds win or Bolton win

    Thanks for the help! 😀

Probably a silly move but I'm overruling my gut and captaining Rooney instead of Jovetic. My thinking is that Rooney is guaranteed 90 minutes. And, this isn't exactly good logic, but I feel like captaining Rooney allows me to want all of my players to do well. As in... If I captained Jov I would be hoping for a Rooney blank. However captaining Rooney means you can still hope Jovetic scores big, because his captaincy % won't be high enough to worry about.

You might be in the position where 9 matches are still to be played and you have 1(2) points from your captain, though.

My problem with Rooney, who my armband is on right now, mind you, is that he's a very patchy form player. Judging from the last game, where he sulked around and did almost nothing, he might be on the way down again now.

Well... a possible change of formation plus ADM feedling him against a newly promoted side away. (Rooney's stats are much better away than at home I believe.)

        Could be a Rooney haul.

      2. Bubz
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Or I could still have 9 matches to be played and a solid 20 points from my captain and everything else being a bonus 😉

He did have a bad game last game, but Di Maria should rejuvenate the side and they are only playing Burnley at the end of the day.

    Morning lads!
Please don't crucify me for asking what I'm sure has been answered many times over the past few hours while I've been sleeping, but could anybody fill me in as to what the latest expectations of costa's gametime are. I went to bed after Chelsea presser under the opinion that he was a "bench at best" prospect?

Terry - Jones - NTaylor (Wisdom) (Chester)
Ramsey - Fab - Mata - Siggy (Marney)
    Rooney - Jovetic - Costa**

    2 FTs, 0 itb

    A) Keep Costa, use transfer elsewhere
    B) Costa -> Ade, bank other transfer
    C) Costa -> Aguero (must find a way to fund it)

As I said, I thought I was content with B, but I'd really appreciate if anyone could fill me in. Cheers!
