After a two-week hiatus, our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. Our three-part approach takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea’s Diego Costa leads the way after notching four times in his first three appearances. The Spain international once again heads into the weekend with hamstring doubts hanging over his pitch time but, after recovering from a similar problem to bag a brace at Goodison in Gameweek 3, he has earned the nod from over 29% of Fantasy managers so far as Jose Mourinho’s side welcome Swansea to the Bridge.

Despite scoring just twice in their first three matches under Louis van Gaal, United are still heavily backed for their home encounter against QPR. Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney sit second and fourth respectively in the Captain Poll and the Colombian’s previous ability to settle quickly in his new surrounds have persuaded 15% to select him compared to Rooney’s 13%. Harry Redknapp’s side have shipped four goals in their only road trip to date but a switch from 3-5-3 to 4-4-1-1 earned the R’s their first clean sheet of the campaign last time around.

Liverpool’s attackers are also high in our collective estimations. Raheem Sterling is the favoured option from Brendan Rodgers’ side – after scoring in two of his first three appearances, the youngster has picked up over 13% of your votes for a plum home clash with Aston Villa. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for the Merseysiders, Mario Balotelli could be a real differential for this one, bearing in mind he’s owned by less than 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

In spite of a testing clash with City at the Emirates, Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck remains on the radar. A double for England against Switzerland has certainly had an impact – 3.55% of Fantasy managers fancy handing him the armband, more than either Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s encounter with Swansea.

With all the doubt surrounding Sterling & Ramsey, shall I just do Ramsey ---> Gerrard? Ive never really fancied Gerrared on FPL, but with these doubts knocing about maybe I shoud just do it? Cheers 🙂

Both will score the same, reckon Moreno may return assists/goals in open play hence gamble for more points. Lovren part of set pieces though.

            • 12 Years
            11 years, 4 months ago

Gamble should imply a risk. If you think Moreno will score the same + attacking return, while costing less, I don't see what's the gamble about it.

Btw, Lovren has a very disappointing scoring record over his career.

            1. Lazarus Star
              • 12 Years
              11 years, 4 months ago

The risk is you dont get him and he out performs Lovren. Lovren is nailed on and integral to Liverpool defence. Moreno I see being rested due to CL games.

I take it you aren't a Lovren fan, so perhaps just advise Moreno to the post rather than challenge other responses.

I actually do like Lovren a lot as a player, but he has very little appeal as a FPL choice.

I'm debating this issue, because I try to figure out the one Liverpool defender to have.

Just noticed they still actually cost the same. Only Sakho is a bit cheaper, and Manquillo a whole 5.0 but he's going to lose his place once GJ is back, plus he seems to provide 0 attacking threat.

                  • 12 Years
                  11 years, 4 months ago

Personally I would get Moreno as he shows promise but worry we wont see attacking play every week and risk of rest (with Enrique)

I used to have Lovren but upgraded to Ivan. His appeal is that he will feature in all games and goes up for set-pieces. He made the difference in the Soton back line last season and already has for LFC so far.

Sakho wont start all games and Manquillo looks a bit ropey and lack of confidence. Lovren and Moreno are best options with it being a mgrs preference. Neither is the wrong answer.

                  (I'm a Liverpool fan btw)

It was a no brainer for me, because I think Lovren is more nailed-on and has more bonus and goal potential.

      Moore is the safest.

Yes. Yes I would. I would have an ageing, volatile, narcissist on my team just because it would be cool--points be damned!

Falcao and van Aahnolt or Balotelli and Lovren. Wildcard week.

I employed the motif of crickets to imply that nobody cares about Erikson, so the only sound one would hear would be crickets.

Will Welbeck or Naismith rise/Jovetic fall tonight, or can this wait 'til the morning.

Is Ivan worth getting at 7.2? That's a massive upgrade elsewhere and I can't see Mourinho letting him get as far forward as he has been! All out attack isn't very Jose, is it?

If you are doing a WC Team who would you have up front?

Can anyone give me some advice? In a drunken state last night I got itchy fingers and spent 12 points on some debatable transfers, wondering whether to WC and change my team further but recoup the 12 points or cut my losses and stick with my team.

    My changes:

Rooney, Jovetic, Ramsey & Young > Costa, Falcao, Lamela & Quinn

    My team now:

    Lloris (Schmeichel)

    Ivan, Clyne, Lovren (Chambers, Dier)

    Fab, Sterling, Lamela, Siggy (Quinn)

    Costa, Falcao, Naismith

    Any advice appreciated.

Lack of Arsenal or Man city cover has me worried but aside from Welbeck & Ramsey I don't see much value there yet. Probably shouldnt have gone Ramsey to Lamela but I do think Lamela will start scoring consistently soon.
