Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli grab the goals as Liverpool narrowly defeat Ludogorets. Jack Wilshere picks up an ankle problem in Arsenal’s defeat in Dortmund. Jordi Amat is out for six weeks for Swansea, Gus Poyet hopes new boy Sebastian Coates can challenge for a starting role in defence, while Newcastle’s young winger Rolando Aarons is out until November with a hamstring injury.

Reds Scrape a Late Win

Brendan Rodgers made just one alteration from the XI that started last weekend’s home loss to Villa, with Raheem Sterling coming in for the suspended Lazar Markovic for the visit of Bulgarian side Ludogorets. Mario Balotelli notched his first goal for the Merseysiders, with attacking left-back Alberto Moreno earning an assist, before Steven Gerrard slotted home a last-gasp spot-kick to ensure Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a win.

The Scout Says: They may have picked up the three points but Liverpool did little to convince Fantasy managers after serving up another lethargic display. With Daniel Sturridge still sidelined, Sterling and Adam Lallana flanked Balotelli in a front three before Rodgers opted for a midfield diamond on 67 minutes, introducing Fabio Borini alongside his compatriot up front, with Sterling tucked in behind the strikers. The domestic schedule remains very much in Liverpool’s favour right now – a trip to West Ham precedes three home fixtures (EVE, WBA, HUL) and a visit to QPR in the subsequent four – and Sterling’s 46% ownership will be a lot more confident if his manager retains the teenager in a central role as the Reds look to bounce back from last week’s loss to Villa.

Gunners Slump to Dortmund Defeat

Arsenal were even less impressive last night after losing 2-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund. Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that drew with City – Kieran Gibbs replaced Nacho Monreal at left-back, Mikel Arteta was selected in front of the back-four after Mathieu Flamini picked up a minor thigh problem, while youngster Hector Bellerin came in for the injured Mathieu Debuchy, with Callum Chambers fit enough only for the bench after a bout of tonsillitis.

The Scout Says: The Gunners managed just a single shot on target all evening and Danny Welbeck – who was snapped up by 237,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers in the last Gameweek – is clearly yet to find his feet as the lone striker. From a Fantasy perspective, owners of Aaron Ramey and Alexis Sanchez can breathe easy after both avoided injury, though Wenger confirmed after the match that Jack Wilshere has “turned an ankle” and is set for scans. Arsenal now pay visit to a Villa side defence this weekend that have conceded just one goal to date, and with matches against Spurs and Chelsea to follow, they have a tough task to get their domestic campaign up and running again.

Amat Blow for Swans

The central defender has been ruled out for up to six weeks with the knee injury sustained during Saturday’s loss to Chelsea.

The Scout Says: Amat’s stint on the sidelines allows Garry Monk the chance to hand new signing Federico Fernandez his first start of the season for next weekend’s home clash with Southampton. The Spaniard had started all four league fixtures alongside Ashley Williams but was subbed off at the break in the 4-2 weekend defeat. With the upcoming fixtures fairly decent for the Welsh club (SOU, sun, NEW, sto, LEI), Monk will be optimistic of bouncing back from their first loss of the new campaign. From a Fantasy perspective, though, Amat’s injury deprives us of another 4.5 price starting option, though – with Fernandez priced at 5.0, Neil Taylor is now the only budget alternative on offer at the Liberty.

Poyet Talks Up Coates’ Prospects

The Sunderland boss is optimistic that his loan signing from Liverpool could soon be ready to battle for a place in the heart of the back-four:

“I know Sebber, I recommended him to England in the beginning when he came to Liverpool. He was a 6ft 3in centre-half, calm on the ball and with aggression. He’s a good player. Slowly, he’s going to have to start competing with Wes and John and when he has the chance to play in any game – even in the cup – he needs to perform. I think it’s a great chance for him as well and a great challenge. We needed a centre-half too, so it works both ways in helping each other.”

The Scout Says: Having failed to pick up a clean sheet in their first four fixtures, the Black Cats have struggled to justify our defensive investment thus far. Sunderland ended the previous campaign strongly and chalked up a trio of shut outs in the final four matches, but despite keeping faith in Wes Brown and John O’Shea, Poyet’s defence has been breached every time. At just 4.5 in FPL, Coates could be one to consider if he can nail down a starting berth, though for now, Patrick van Aanholt and Vito Mannone look the most appealing options ahead of a schedule that pits the Wearsiders against Burnley, Swansea, Stoke and Southampton in the next four Gameweeks.

Aarons Sidelined for Newcastle

Under-fire Magpies boss Alan Pardew was dealt more bad news yesterday after receiving confirmation that young winger Rolando Aarons could be out until November with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: Aaron’s impact off the bench in Gameweek 3 was the one bright note in the Tyneside team’s recent toils. Handed just 24 minutes as a second-half sub against Palace, the youngster served up a goal and assist in the 3-3 draw with a display that suggested he could be set to win a regular role for Newcastle. Having picked up the problem prior to last week’s hammering at Southampton, his absence – allied with Siem de Jong’s long-term thigh injury – will force Pardew to rely on Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko alongside Remy Cabella in the attacking midfield three. Given that the Palace encounter was the only match in which the Magpies have scored in this season, faith in their attacking assets could barely be any lower.

Foster Playing Through Pain Barrier

The West Brom number one has admitted he’s still struggling with a thumb injury picked up on England duty recently.

“I am managing it pretty well and getting some injections in it to kill the pain, so it’s fine. It is the way it is and I just have to hope it heals itself. I’m hopeful it will and the doctors are as well so that’s that. It’s OK. There was a little bit of bone that I chipped off it in training, which is a little bit unfortunate. I have been trying to inject it and manage it a little bit.”

The Scout Says: Given that the Baggies have conceded at least twice in three of their four matches under Alan Irvine, it’s fair to say few, if any, Fantasy managers are interested in their defence. Foster’s injury is one to monitor, though – if he fails to properly recover and opt to go under the knife, it would bring Boaz Myhill into contention as a 4.0 stopper, though defensive returns admittedly look far from likely right now, with Spurs, Liverpool and United in the next four.

Don't think I have any pressing transfers
    Krul/Foster
    (Duff), Ivanovic, Chester, VanAanholt, (Hutton)
    Ramsey, Sterling, Siggy, Fab, (Marney)
    Naismith, Rooney, Costa
    3.9m in the bank

    so options are:
    A: Save FT
B: Foster > Forster (bench Krul)
    C: Swap out Chester
    D: Naismith > Pelle

I'm leaning to B because it's a rare week when you get chance to tinker with Goalkeeping position....and NewC getting worse by the week.

Lamela will probably be benched some games,Valbuena will always play and he is scoring/assisting like a mad in Russia. Xavier am from Metalist, should do well,5.5 from a sub not cheap but you need a strong bench. I'm thinking Paulista>Rukavina also,0.5 cheaper and should play the easy fixtures while Paulista could be benched.

Brought this point about earlier in the DZ as well, would appreciate some advice...

I would love to know your thoughts about doubling up on defenders. Would you for example, double up on Clyne and Bertrand from next week when the Saints have these fixtures up till game week 12

    QPR,tot,SUN,STO,hul,LEI,avl

Or would you prefer one of Clyne/Bertrand and get someone like a Chambers who could represent good value for money with these fixtures

    TOT,che,HUL,sun,BUR,swa

    1. Shifty
      • 12 Years

Double up. I believe we've had this conversation before. Trying to shift my defence toward a 2-2-2, ie 2 defenders each from 3 teams. A clean sheet would be worth minimum 12 points then. High risk, high reward i guess.

Not sure it's 'great' at all! 🙂 but at a 5.0 range, there's not alot that can go wrong. Other 5.0s have more question marks over them. The reason why i'm doing it is for my ML.

I can be clever trying to pick a perfect rotating back line, but what's the point if my ML rivals have the same defender picks. For eg, thanks to Clyne's start, most of my ML has him and i'm not going to benefit from his clean sheets. The only alternative is to double up and at least still gain on rivals when Soton gets a cleanie.

Of course, this is just the optimist version of that. The pessimist version, you could get 2 points from 2 players when they lose 🙂

As you pointed out above, it is high risk high reward. Could go either way.

Another point I'd like to make it that 5 is an awkward range for a defender, falling between the uber and the premium category. It makes me think twice before investing in defenders in that price range because I get the feeling I may overspend in my defense

This is my defense as of now:

            DDG
            Baines Clyne Moore Hutton Chester*

Whoever comes in will come in for Chester and with DDG,Baines and Clyne already, I might 'overspend' if I get Bertrand

Yea might be abit much with that backline. For the double up i was talking about, was thinking more of Bertrand-Clyne, Wilson Bardsley. Decent midtable teams, not too heavy on the budget. Winter wildcard's the time to get the premium defs imo.

Bardsley is very under rated amongst these parts and has a decent attacking threat too... Some good fixtures to follow as well...

I would want Baines in there however, and this is why I got him

-History of picking up 170 points every season
                -Set pieces including penos
-Highest number of touches in the final third for any defender
                -Here are his fixtures:

                CRY,liv,mun,AVL,bur,SWA,sun,WHAM,spurs,HUL,mci,QPR,sot,STO,new,hul

Just get him in now and forget his spot in your starting 11 till the winter wildcard!

Yea, definitely have to keep Baines through thick and thin really. Not averse to having Baines in my team. Just think I will be one of those managers who will be itching to downgrade him to a 4.0 just to fit in a one more big hitting attacker! 🙂

The choice is obviously yours, mate. But this is the right time to get him. I sense a haul against Palace! There's a decent chance of a penalty in the Merseyside derby as well. And the fixtures after that, are well, delicious!

For him, don't forget the golden rule:

                    Never bench,never captain.

Nothing wrong with it. A couple of people on here did it with Stoke last year and scored well.

A couple of years ago I doubled up with a Swans & Newc combo. Vorm/Naylor and rotated them H/A with Krul/Simpson. They did brilliantly.

I agree, the only downside to it is that with one wonder goal or freakish goal both your cleanies go down the drain. This is very hard to predict despite a run of favorable fixtures. For example, it worked for you but didn't work for the ones who doubled up on everton's defense last season

Touched on this above...how often do you have a full house of cleanies in your team anyway? Might as well put some in the same basket. Whenever you get a cleanie, it's worth 2. Rotating back line of cheapies might get you 2 cleanies in 3 weeks if you're lucky!

I agree, cleanies, especially with the weaker teams are impossible to predict. Southampton have some great stats too, have conceded the 2nd least number of shots in the penalty box, which makes me think why not invest in the better defense despite the double up?

      Soton double looks tempting.

However, remember Everton's "amazing" fixtures last year? It was bloody annoying watching both Coleman and Baines (or was it Distin) getting 2 pts, week in and week out.

I prefer to spread things around as you never know when someone is going to come up with a wonder goal against one of your teams... saints kept a cleanie at the weekend but Newcastle would have scored twice on another day, they had chances

I think it makes sense on teams like Chelsea/City across the season as you can guarantee 15-20 clean sheets but that takes a lot of investment

I know others have done this though and feel it can be worth the risk

I think Eriksen has looked far more of a threat than Lamela and would feel far more secure with the armband on him. You are right, however, about the potential waste of a free trade on someone you would consider getting rifled of the following week.

Ive avoided on an assumption he isn't safe from rotation. Dont know if this is true or not. So far he looks good for the cash. Im monitoring for now.

Sounds like something Jamie Redknapp would say.

guess you don't have Adebayor, should I capt. him or Baines? My dilemma.

Tough call, but I'd say Ade, reckon CP can sneak a goal or 2

You are quite deep into the punters wild with that one. Too hot for me, but this is one of those weeks where it might be worth it cos of lack of stand out options. Would prefer Ade tho.

Thx-- I still haven't heard anyone w/Ade beg off the band. But I'm a rebel, what can I say. GL

Just watched the whole Arsenal game from last night. Looked flat, lack of pressing and no hunger. Harsh on Bellerin to be thrown in such a big game too. Welbeck needs to take his chances in games like that, he had 3 chances which we could have and should have scored. Not his fault for the loss though, of course.

The sooner Theo comes back the better. This will surely force Wenger to play Ozil in the no.10 role with Sanchez and Theo either side of him.

      Welbeck
      Sanchez - Ozil - Walcott
      Ramsey - (Arteta/Flamini/Wilshere)
