[sbu_large_image] Technical Area

A 4-0 thrashing of QPR helped Man United to their first win of the season under Louis van Gaal last weekend. After failing to find a way past Burnley in their previous league fixture, the Red Devils ran riot against the hapless R’s, with a trio of midfielders, Angel di Maria, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, all finding the net on Sunday afternoon.

In this week’s Technical Area article, we cast an eye over United’s chief midfield protagonists, as Fantasy faith begins to pick up in pace ahead of the weekend trip to Leicester.

involvement

The average position map highlights Van Gaal’s midfield diamond – Daley Blind (number 17) sat in front of the back-four, while Herrera (number 21) and Di Maria (number 7) were stationed right and left respectively behind Mata (number 8).

As the stats suggest, Blind is the man who will keep United ticking over and allow their attackers the platform to flourish – on his debut, he had 130 touches, produced 112 passes and received 101 passes, second only to Jordan Henderson amongst midfielders on all three counts in Gameweek 4. With Blind protecting the defence, Di Maria and Herrera produced 105 and 101 touches respectively – significantly superior to Mata’s 51 over 67 minutes on the pitch – with the Argentine edging Herrera for touches in the final third by 36 to 30.

As the average position map shows, though, Herrera dropped deep more often and subsequently received 86 passes – more than double Mata’s 40 and up on Di Maria’s 70, before the latter made way on 82 minutes. Indeed, in terms of passes received in the final third, Herrera’s 25 was second only to Wayne Rooney (27), with Robin van Persie sitting third on 20.

Post-match, Di Maria’s distribution was criticised by his manager after the new boy gave the ball away on numerous occasions. A quick look at the numbers shows why – the South American’s pass accuracy of just 80.3% was far and away the lowest of any United outfield player, with Blind’s metronomic display registering a 95.5% pass completion, whilst Mata and Herrera also stood out with 97.7% and 90.6% accuracy.

Given their similar starting roles, Herrera’s stats suggest he could be a genuine alternative to Di Maria if Van Gaal maintains the diamond. The former Athletic Bilbao man had previously failed to create a single chance for team-mates this term in his deep-lying role, but on Sunday, not only did he mirror Di Maria’s four key passes, Herrera also produced an excellent defensive shift, winning four of eight attempted tackles – at least double the number of any team-mate.

Mata, in spite of his advanced position in “the hole”, failed to register a single key pass on Sunday. Indeed, the former Chelsea man has created just four chances for United this term – averaging 86.3 minutes per key pass under Van Gaal compared to 38.6 for the Old Trafford outfit last year. Up front, despite earning an assist in the rout, Rooney created just one chance over his 94 minutes – the same number as Radamel Falcao managed in 27 minutes and two fewer than Van Persie (three).

In terms of goal threat, Mata’s five touches in the box was just behind Rooney and Van Persie (seven and six). Although the Spaniard equaled the strike duo’s two attempts inside the box, it’s noticeable that his minutes-per-attempt average is also down from last year (44 to 69) – in spite of scoring twice in four Gameweeks, his goal threat, in addition to his creativity, has so far taken a turn for the worse under the new man in charge.

Di Maria’s growing band of owners may be a little worried by his lack of impact in the box. The Argentine failed to produce a single touch in the QPR penalty area and managed two long-range attempts in the 4-0 win, with his converted free-kick from distance a little fortunate to sneak past Rob Green. Indeed, over his two appearances for the Red Devils, Di Maria has managed just two touches inside the area, averaging an effort every 50.7 minutes and a key pass every 30.4 minutes.

Once again, Herrera’s stats are superior to the Argentine’s. The former managed two touches in the penalty area and fired a trio of attempts on goal, with one inside the box – prior to Sunday, he had failed to register a single attempt or touch the ball inside the penalty box. It remains to be seen whether Van Gaal will continue with the diamond formation, but while Di Maria and Mata owners will be relatively content with their day’s Fantasy output, Herrera definitely looks one to monitor if he can continue in the same vein.

So, right now my back line is Lovren/Clyne/PvA/Chester/Moore, and my front 3 is Rooney/Costa/Pelle. Midfield is right where I want it.

Next week I'll have 2 FT. Would you go Chester --> Duff and Rooney --> Aguero? Or should I use the cash to upgrade Lovren? Baines is a possibility but I'd prefer to wait until GW8 with Everton. Or anything else?

Thanks both! another one, who to bench from DEF:

        Taylor / PAV / Coloccini / Bertrand / Moore

Moore + Taylor/Bertrand, its a matter of how will SWA-SOU match result in fact. I will probably bench Bertrand as Swansea plays home, right ?

Epic, I have a dilemma and not sure what to do. Need to bench one of the following: Alaba, Filipe Luis, or a 5 pointer. Which would you do? I'm leaning Filipe Luis as the most he could possibly get is 6 maybe 7 with a recovered ball point...

I am going to take the piss and switch. Don't really care about UCL and 9 points is hardly a haul although it is solid and will ensure a "good start" but Messi has the best fixture he will have the entire UCL and if he scores a hat trick I would be too distraught if I didn't switch 😀

How have Leicester only conceded 5 goals... 91 goal attempts conceded in their four matches. That's almost 23 a game! 48 of which were inside the box, too.
Looks like Rooney (c) then. He's had a shot every 28mins this season - not too bad considering United looked dull the first three matches.

True. I can't see their grit working against United though. Of course we can't judge solely off the QPR game, but they did look dangerously fluid going forward.

Mata, ADM, Falcao, Rooney & RVP/Falcao is very dangerous on paper. And they showed glimpses of what they're capable of against QPR. When/if they start to gel, surely they'll be one of if not the most dangerous teams going forward?

Hopefully United will keep their shape and the goals will only be split between Rooney and the other striker playing. I think last week's performance against QPR was particularly rare as basically everyone had plenty of time on the ball and the opportunity to make direct runs (e.g Herrera). Can't see that happening again in such a devastating fashion

    @Doos

where do you stand on my Hazard dilemma?

would you keep this week in anticipation of Villa at home or sell for Chadli even though he has a tougher fixture next week

If I keep I'll be waiting until GW7 for Aguero if I sell this week I can get him GW6

I ain't Doos but I haven't owned Hazzars all season, And as things stand I'm quite happy with fab matching him and out scoring him.
He ain't worth the extra over Fab ATM for me, too many worthwhile options scoring freely for me jk.

well I won't be getting Fabs but that fixture next week is tasty

The thing is Hazard at some point will get a 15-20 point haul, but whilst you're waiting Fabs will accrued a stream of 7s and 8s

I think I'd rather sell this week, imagining selling the week he explodes

My plan is to with Rooney, Costa and Aguero up top

to find it I need to lose Hazard for Chaldi, so it becomes a matter of when

            to me

            Chadli + Aguero > Hazard and Naismith/Welbeck

i'd rather Hazard + Welbeck tbh. Though i have made a decision to never own aguero ever again.. burnt me as much as evans burnt you

I can easily keep Hazard for Villa then sell the week after, I may do that as it gives me one last chance to asses Kun's fitness.

I have a major issue with Hazard now Fans is around

Can you afford to take a string of 2s whilst waiting for a 15-20 whilst Fab owners are picking up a steady stream of 7s and 8s and leaving you behind?

the damage is already done by you waiting.. now's the time for you to reap your reward for your patience. else you'll leave with a disadvantage 🙂 .. he will get that 10+ pointer game over the next 3 based on how he is playing. watch the game tonight and see how he does

I also need to asses Kun, the thing is, I've been burnt by Kun, but I will always go back, why? Because when he's fit and playing he's a machine and possibly the only fixture proof player in the league, I will own him.

well I've had Siggy and Ramsey from the off so I see no reason to part with either. I've only just brought Raheem in, so he needs a chance

Hazard is odd man out and arguably the most inconsistent and expendable of the bunch. Even though I've also had him from the off.

i'm probably getting hazard in next week 🙂 .. i like chelsea's fixtures from next week onwards apart from GW 9 and 11. the rest of the fixtures look like they are right up hazard's alley. looked like he reached full on beast mode on saturday. teams cant afford to double mark him like they did last season cause of costa and fabregas so he is afforded more space. if he is on penos it'll be a bonus too

Fab I'd wait given fixtures. ADM possibly given United's nice run of fixtures. I borught him for Rambo last week but if Arsenal hit form I'll be tempted to switch back the other way.

To be honest I think you want the three mids you have plus one of Fab/Di Maria at the moment.

I have Sterling, Ramsey and Siggy, plus Eriksen and Nasri. Tempted to add one of the other two to the mix if Nasri doesn't improve.

    Krul(Mannone)
    Pieters, Lovren, Clyne (Wisdom, Vlaar)
    Henderson, Ramsey, Silva, Fabregas (Siggy)
    balotelli, Costa, Naismith

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I'd go Chester. Worst case he comes on a sub and gets you one point while Moore will likely end up with a one pointer as well.

Chester. If he doesn't start he's unlikely to come on so you'll get Moore's points. Moore is likely to concede 2+ anyway so 1 for Moore isn't out of the question.
