As the disciplinary wagon rolls back into town, there’s no prize for guessing the headline-maker this week. Looking beyond United’s captain, though, there’s also been some notable additions to this week’s tightrope.

As you’ll probably have read many times since Saturday, this was Wayne Rooney’s first dismissal for Man United in over five years. Those stats are fooling nobody, though, as he’s long been susceptible to the red mist and even the best attempts at media spin would be struggling to quash memories of a similar swipe at Jordon Mutch only 10 months ago that went relatively unpunished. In short, it was coming – and will see United play without their captain for the next three league matches (EVE, wba, CHE), before he returns to the fold for the small matter of the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad.

Joining Rooney on the ban list this weekend is Swansea right-back Angel Rangel who, after picking up his first caution for throwing the ball away on the hour mark of a goalless draw at Sunderland, was given his marching orders for a fairly innocuous block on winger Will Buckley just 20 minutes later. With the sanction for two bookings just a single match, Rangel will be missing for the visit of Newcastle before returning for the trip to the Britannia.

While Jonjo Shelvey safely negotiated said Sunderland draw to remain on four yellows, he was joined by two Arsenal players after Saturday evening’s north London derby with Tottenham. First to incur the referee’s wrath and step out to the oohs of the crowd was Jack Wilshere – busy and belligerent in the early exchanges, and victim of a foul by Spurs debutant Ryan Mason a few minutes earlier, Wilshere was soon in the book for a retaliatory lunge and will be ready to start his balancing task.

The triumvirate was then completed late in the match as perhaps the least surprising card of the weekend (if you discount Alex Song’s three-minute wait earlier in the day) was delivered to Calum Chambers – this one for a foul on Aaron Lennon. Chambers has now delivered five bookings already in his fledgling Arsenal career despite only having started seven matches in all competitions – with four of those cards corresponding to his four Premier League starts, the wait for his fifth and the resulting one-match ban may not be a long one.

Finally, tidying up the naughty lists from last week, both Tyler Blackett and Mehdi Abeid have served their one-match sentences and will be available for selection as the Uniteds of Manchester and Newcastle face up to their next matches at home to Everton and away to Swansea respectively.

Here are some of the defenses I have worked out with your help. Which one would you prefer to have on a WC?

    A)

    Forster/McCarthy
    Baines/Moreno/Chambers/PvA/Hutton
    0 in the bank

    B)
    Heaton/Mannone
    Baines/Clyne/Chambers/PvA/Hutton
    0.6 in the bank

    C)
    Heaton/Mannone
    Baines/Clyne/Chambers/PvA/Naylor
    0 in the bank

    D)
    Forster/McCarthy
    Baines/Azpi/Chambers/Hutton/Moore
    0 in the bank

Yes I did miss that 🙂

Btw, the defense I posted above rotates PERFECTLY until January, and Begovic looks like the best keeper again statistically (and doesn't limit you to only 2 SOU Defs/fwds)

Interesting. But I'm not sure I would want Krul in there as Newcastle are a shambles at the moment. I'm currently leaning towards this as this would give me 0.5 in the bank as well (and it rotates perfectly too!)

            Forster McCarthy
            Baines Moreno Chambers Duff Hutton

Getting Duff over PvA basically who provides cover for Chambers' fixtures. Fixtures are equally good, but the major advantage is that it gives me the cash to spend elsewhere if I need it later on

Burnley are a short-term wonder IMO. Now that injuries are catching up to their small squad they aren't as solid. Don't waste your pick on Duff.

Agree on Krul. If I was on a WC I would pick someone else but he'll do as backup for now

Are you basing that on the 4-0 result the other day? They were missing Marney and Jones to be honest.

Some interesting thoughts from Doos as well. The plot thickens 😀

Check how Taylor rotates with him. Equally good IMO, and Swansea's defense is more solid than Sunderland IMO. It's pretty tight though because of PVA's attacking potential

Begovic will play 80% of the games anyways, and there are plenty of 4.5's performing well.

If you're not scared of spending the extra 0.5 though it's not a terrible choice though. That 0.5 makes a bigger difference in goal than anywhere else really

Indeed. That would be my point.

                Also, their rotation is parfait!

I will still have Sturridge and Walcott. And Costa.

Fair enough. On a WC it's worth considering two 5.0's.

Not convinced fabianski is the best option though, but if they rotate well that is parfait as you say 🙂

No, it is not fair to say. Heaton is a mirage, and Sunderland may crash and burn - to early to say.

Interesting, I guess going with Forster now (ditching Clyne) and getting Fabianski in gameweek 13 when Soton's fixtures go downhill isn't a bad idea?

I wouldn't advocate wasting FT's on keepers outside of WC's. Just get a cheap keeper who can cover for Forster in gw13-16.

I prefer Mannone/Heaton to Fabianski/Begovic , they offer much better value and also have a greater chance of picking up more saves

There's nothing wrong with going dirt cheap. It has worked well for me so far and allows extra to be spent on your front 7.

My front 8 are pretty much nailed though, hence I had the 'luxury' of spending that much in defense... Will probably save some cash though 🙂

                I have had 10 CS from a possible 24 (42% hit rate) from a 30.5m back 7.
All the rest of the cash is invested in the front 7.

Now, let us also take into account that Spurs should have scored, they missed two absolute sitters so by rights he was lucky to get the CS.

The goal, he can have but until he starts hitting them in (or until someone like Sturridge is available for him to cross to) then no thank you!

Agree completely. I had him for 2 GWs and got rid. I watch every LFC match, as I'm sure a lot do. The propensity to concede from set pieces has not improved from last year, in fact it seems to have gotten worse!

Aye, unfortunately it is the system in place that is causing a lot of issues. Of course, if Moreno was scoring frequently I'd ignore the lack of CS potential but realistically, you do need some defensive returns at that price methinks.

Interesting thoughts. Let me tell you something now,

                  - He has created the most number of chances for any defenders, only behind Baines and Ivan
                  - The returns you are showing reflects a biased sample size as he has faced Everton,City,Soton,WHAM and Spurs (arguably among the top 10 PL sides atm)
                  - Even then his attacking stats are immense
                  - He now faces WBA,qpr,HUL,new,CHE,cpl,STO,lei,SUN

His attacking stats are NOT immense.

Furthermore, he shows all the signs of lacking the technique to turn any of those "chances" into assists, whereas we know about Baines and Ivanovic.

I really respect your thoughts Doos but how are those stats not immense with such tough fixtures? To be one behind Baines and two behind Ivan in chances created with those fixtures is sensational! 😀

Could I just make the point that Everton, City and Spurs have not been great defensively.

Stats are one thing but they can cloud your vision, Balotelli for example has now taken 63 shots in his last 20 PL games, that seems like he's very very attacking. He's also only scored 1 goal.

Moreno has created lots of chances, 0 assists so far and defensive points will be no picnic to grab.

The intriguing part is Liverpool's defensive stats are pretty good as well, despite the fixtures 😯

I know the game isn't played on paper, but still there's some decent arguments to contend with 🙂

But look at the individual players, a lot of silly mistakes plus the full backs bomb forward leaving them quite exposed (as well as the fact that poor old Stevie G is no CDM and he never will be...)

I agree completely, they are very vulnerable from set pieces too. But the capacity to produce at both ends is what is tempting me rather than the defensive returns

Yes, but those stats, while impressive for defenders, are still crap.

I won't touch Baines myself until he shows much better.

Defenders are for defending, first and foremost. Ivanovic is a curiosity.

Stats are one thing, actual fantasy points are another. He's very attack minded but nobody is finishing his chances and they concede.

Put it this way, average out his score and it is 3.4 points per game.

Now look at the YCs, he is two away from a ban already.

I'll make the same point, returns are key both defensive and attacking. So far, he doesn't really have either, he may get attacking, defensive returns I'm not so sure. I wouldn't be leaping into it but then again, sometimes you just have to go with your gut 🙂

See TFF's posts above regarding Moreno.

When discussing a player there's no need I bring rank into it, especially when I'm only a captaincy choice behind you. I'll also mention that after a dreadful first two gw's my score is actually clearly better than yours. Suggesting that you got lucky at the start and are on a downward trend because you made bad decisions after gw1 whereas I've had 4 straight green arrows.

Or the fact that I was only joking with you. You don't know me well enough but I never compare ranks, if I do I assure you it is only in jest.

Exactly, as soon as I posted it I felt it sounded far worse than I intended. I suppose I was just saying that stats can be misleading at times (not to say they aren't very useful!)

And yes, you've been climbing up very well after the first bad couple of weeks so big progress is being made clearly 🙂

Anyways lads here is what I'm going for FINALLY!

                            Forster McCarthy
                            Ivanovic Moreno Chambers Duff Moore

                            with,
                            -Forster/McCarthy being everyone's collective pick
                            -Ivanovic being Doosra's/Somalion's pick
                            -Moreno being mine/Rick's pick
                            -Chambers being Doosra's/Rick's pick
                            -Duff/Moore being budget fillers

Hope you guys like it now! Leaves me with 0.2 in the bank

Just to be clear, I think Begovic-Clyne is slightly ahead of Forster-Moreno, but if you're going for Forster then Moreno is a top pick.

I got totally caught unawares by the Ramsey drop. I was monitoring until I wasn't. That sucked.

think this could be the week to gamble with the armband. currently on falcao because...
        - class goalscorer, think he will explode soon
        - home fixture against leaky everton defence
        - costa has tough fixture, may not start
        - less than 10% ownership
        - lack of alternatives
        - I like to live on the edge.
