Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders is rolled out once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

Captain Poll

Yet again, Diego Costa is the favourite heading into the weekend’s matches. A home clash with Arsenal refuses to deter his backers – the Spain international has scored in all three of his appearances at the Bridge and faces a Gunners defence with a single shut-out to their name all season.

Sergio Aguero runs him close, though. City’s star striker has earned a significant number of new owners this week due to the fall-out from Wayne Rooney’s three-match suspension and has received 21% of the votes cast to Costa’s 24%. Aguero’s strike at Hull was his fourth of the season and he now pays visit to a Villa side reeling from back-to-back 3-0 defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea. Edin Dzeko is backed by just 3% by comparison, despite outscoring Aguero by 13 points to eight in the KC win.

Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa is also highly fancied. Like Costa, he’s netted in all three matches in front of his own fans – having grabbed goals against Everton, Arsenal and Man United at the King Power Stadium, he welcomes a Burnley side that shipped four against the Baggies last Sunday.

Three goals in five starts ensures Raheem Sterling remains on the radar as Liverpool attempt to rediscover the form that served up 100 goals last season. The teenager entertains West Brom this time round, but with the visitors chalking up consecutive shut-outs, just 11% are looking to hand him the armband. United’s home clash with Everton also sees Angel Di Maria (5%) and Radamel Falcao (4%) feature prominently, though just 1% have placed their faith in Robin van Persie, despite the Dutchman scoring in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    if you can afford baines
    Get him in
    i am using a front 7 of

    sanchez adm sterling chadli

    aguero costa welbeck

its pretty expensive so i can't afford baines except i use four 4.0 defenders. i would just go with this team

Eriksen not even on the bench tonight.
Is this a good sign for the dwindling core of Eriksen owners?
Maybe Poch thinks he's not worth a place in the first team squad.

I don't think he should, but only because of the style I would have England playing if I were manager.

I'd try to build on more technical CB's like Stones with Cahill next to him with Clyne and Baines/Shaw as the fullbacks. Chambers is in contention too. Shawcross might take my 4th CB spot ahead of Jones though but probably not.

      1. rickardinho

Shawcross is a better centre half defensively than each of those. I would also argue he was technically better than a couple too

I disagree. He wouldn't look as comfortable playing in a more expansive defensive setup, compared to at Stoke where they defend narrowly with their back 4 lining up along the width of the penalty box and the wingers tucking in like fullbacks to make a back 6.

Tiago Ilori has a British passport, and is going to be a top class CB. He's played regularly with Portugal's U21's though so might need a bit of convincing. He'd be a great catch for England though, not that Hodgson or any other manager would know what to do with him.

Stones-Ilori could be a pretty good partnership though.

Everton with John Stones on the pitch this season: 5 goals conceded in 333 minutes.

Everton with Sylvain Distin on the pitch this season: 13 goals conceded in 353 minutes.

Coincidence, or reckon there's something in it?

Stones didn't play against Chelsea or Arsenal, which obviously skews things. Distin also played in the 3-0 defeat at Swansea in the League Cup, where Stones didn't feature. Stones is the only one to have played in the Europa games, in both of which they conceded once.

    1. rickardinho
      • 11 Years

Distin has been horseshyt this season, regardless of fixtures. Stones has been miles better than him.

The fixtures aren't a valid excuse with the mistakes he's made. Totally switching off on Ramsey's goal; getting offside plays completely wrong against Chelsea; that ridiculous header off his own bar against Swansea.... those are basic defensive errors, nothing to do with who he's playing.

A lot rests on Mata's shoulders. If he doesn't perform, then you can't really expect Di Maria to be the sole source of creativity for the team... If he does perform though, it could be an improvement, with a clearer division of roles, RVP and Falcao can get on with scoring, and not worry about coming deep for the ball.

      Aguero

Have both. Leaning towards Costa as I think he's likely to play more minutes as it's such a big game.

Costa seems a big game player and looks like he'll make some an impact to me ... but Aguero could explode if he starts ... but will he start?

      thanks GSB -enjoyable read.

My take - don't give advice on something if you're going to do something different. People rightly/wrongly assume that advice given is advice you'd follow yourself.

Regarding Siggy. Think Jonty has summed it up pretty well. Swansea don't do enough away from home to justify playing him every week. Might do Boyd -> Chadli next week and give him some competition for his spot!

I'm captaining Fabregas this week, against his former club Arsenal. Bit of a gamble, but I expect him to outscore Costa this week. Arsenal don't track runners from midfield very well.

it seems like a lot of pple who don't know how to fit aguero and costa into their team and still maintain a balanced squad are jealous of we the aguero users. then they keep talking shit to console themselves saying they could use the money to upgrade their midfield. But is there anything that justifies not having the man with a greater goal per game than henry. the man with the best goal per game in epl history
the man who wrecks defense and cause harvoc to teams on his day

where are those that are captaining aguero for gw7
where are those that believe aguero would destroy villa on saturday
    where are the aguero bitches???!

Yeah looks like first choice. And I like my luck this year. I think it is gonna do me a lot of favour next few weeks... This season is gonna be awesome.

Also Naughton for me it seems better for that RB role than Dier

I've got 2 free transfers this week. I'm reasonably happy with my squad but it would probably be a waste if I didn't use one transfer. 0.6 in the bank.

    Lloris/McCarthy
    Lovren/Wilson/PvA/Moore/Hutton
    di Maria/Fabregas/Sterling/Sigurdsson/Boyd
    Aguero/Costa/Valencia

I still have an inexplicable belief that Lovren will come good, but I'm open to axing Lloris (not sure who for though). Otherwise I'm thinking of just changing McCarthy to Harper.
