As always on a Friday lunchtime, we analyse the PlayON player price list ahead of tomorrow’s 10.45am deadline. Below we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

This weekend there is a £1,000 Guaranteed Pot on offer at PlayON where you can enter up to three different teams into the game.

Goalkeeper – Steve Harper
Hull’s back-up keeper is set to earn his first start of the campaign after Allan McGregor was ruled out for a month with a shoulder injury. Coming in at only 6.9m, Harper looks a great budget option as the Tigers play Hull host to Crystal Palace tomorrow afternoon, with save points likely to heighten his points potential. West Ham will be hoping for a first clean sheet of the season this weekend at home to Queens Park Rangers. Sam Allardyce’s side have been untypically porous so far and their backline options are subsequently priced on the kind side – Adrian is available for just 7.6m and faces an attack that has scored just once on their travels to date.

Defender – Alberto Moreno
The Liverpool left-back is our defensive punt for the weekend, ahead of a home encounter with West Brom. Rested for the midweek trip to FC Basel, Moreno – who sets you back just 8.1m – is set to return to the Reds’ starting XI and, although his side are still struggling for clean sheets, the Baggies have scored just one away goal this season. Moreno’s raids down the flank could make the investment worthwhile alone, as he goes in search of a second league goal in six appearances. At only 7.1m, Neil Taylor looks an absolute steal for Swansea’s home clash with Newcastle. The home side have conceded just once in front of their own fans, whilst the Magpies have drawn blanks in all three road trips, suggesting a clean sheet could be on the cards. Taylor’s recent assist against Chelsea also underlines his potential at both ends of the pitch.

Midfielder – Will Buckley
Handed his first full 90 minutes for Sunderland last week, the summer signing from Brighton looks set to retain his role after impressing manager Gus Poyet. After scoring 19 in 96 appearances for Brighton, Buckley will be keen to get his first goal in the top flight as the Black Cats entertain Stoke and, at just 7.7m in PlayON this week, the winger also allows funds to be utilised elsewhere in the team. David Silva is our essential midfield pick. The City playmaker reminded us of his ability by serving up a pair of assists at Hull last weekend and with a trip to Villa up next for the champions, the Spaniard – who costs 10.3m – offers an in-form route into Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Forward – Diafra Sakho
The West Ham striker has now scored in each of his last four starts across all competitions, including recent strikes against Liverpool and Man United. With the Hammers welcoming a QPR side that have conceded 10 times in three away matches this season, Sakho could be amongst the goals yet again for Big Sam’s side and looks excellent value at just 9.4m.Leicester’s home clash with Burnley brings Leonardo Ulloa into contention. The Argentine has netted five times in six appearances for the Championship winners and, crucially, has scored in every home fixture – coming in at 10.5m, he’ll fancy his chances against a backline that shipped four goals to West Brom last Sunday afternoon.

Head over to www.playon.co and get picking ahead of the 10.45am deadline tomorrow morning.

    van gaal stats.
at bayern munich his team scored 19 goals in their first 13 games, winning just 5 of them. they then won the next 9 in a row scoring 29 in the process to propell them up to 2nd place where they'd eventually win the league.

Just had a look at the anytime goalscorer odds at the weekend:

Costa - 5/6 AGS, 7/2 to score 2 or more.

Aguero - 5/6 AGS, 7/2 to score 2 or more.

    Problem solved...

Really torn on this, but think I'm going to give Aguero a miss.

Why? Costa, Pelle and Welbeck all look really tempting, great fixtures and form, and the cash can be used to get Baines, and an extra big hitter in midfield.

What do you think, or is Aguero "essential"?

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 6 months ago

Having two light strikers may cause flexibility issues down the line though. Say one of Kun/Studge/Falcao/RVP/Rooney hits form... then it would require reworking the team.

I think the midfield is the place to compromise at the moment.

      1. MARVELLUS
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

        Very good point on flexibility.
But do you think Aguero will get MUCH more points than Pelle or Welbeck? I guess the captaincy factor would maximise gains.
Points per million, think Aguero would be the others, do you think?
Taking into account rotation, early subs...

        1. MARVELLUS

          • 14 Years
          11 years, 6 months ago

He won't be better value, but if he stays fit I think he'll get a lot more points. He gives a strong captaincy option as well, Welbeck and Pelle don't really give that.

Im in this space. Once this GW is over I will pull in Welbz to accompany Pelle and Costa. Only issue for me is how to cope with getting some Man City attacking presence (I didnt say cover) into my team. Considering having a 5 man mid and getting Silva in and rotating one of my 8 forwards.

      1. MARVELLUS
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Ha, cover is an evil word here!
Yes I was thinking of bringing in Silva for this reason if I don't get Aguero.

    4. Kirby
      • 15 Years

For me, Aguero is essential as I think he'll outscore Pelle and Welbeck.

Essentially, you can't have both an amazing (expensive) front-line and back-line, it's just finding the balance you think will get the most points in the long-term.

      1. Bob.
        • 15 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

I guess what you should also factor into this argument is captaincy options. Aguero is someone who one would feel more comfortable captaining rather than a Southampton striker or Welbeck. My preference would be Costa, Aguero, Welbeck up front.

        1. Kirby
          • 15 Years
          11 years, 6 months ago

Very true. I currently have Costa, Aguero and Pelle.

Fortunate in that I can swap out Pelle for Welbeck without worrying about funds, it's good to see there's a few decent strikers to play around with stopping this conformity to a template team.

      2. MARVELLUS
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 6 months ago

Hmmm. Think Aguero will get lots of points, but you can get a very good midfield and defence with Wel Pel Costa.

Bit of a coin flip I feel...

        1. Kirby
          • 15 Years
          11 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, I have downgraded my defence more than anything to fit in Costa, Aguero and Pelle but I think the ones I have are in good form with decent fixtures.

    5. JasonG123
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 6 months ago

For me, one of Aguero, Fab, ADM and Baines need to be sacrificed in order to get a decent team. Personally, I've sacrificed Fab due to fixture congestion and the need for more captaincy options.

  12. Kalix

Is there a whole lot of groupthink going on with Baines around here...or am I just blind?
Why are so many people so keen?

Sure, he's top class...but Everton don't look like keeping any cleanies this year and is a big deal for his price. He's on setpieces, but you could pick Gerrard for similar reaons, and I don't see many "WCing for Gerrard".

    Can anyone explain?

It's just all this "gonna WC for Baines, GW8" talk...and then every RMT having a load of "needs Baines" replies...never any needs Lukaku replies.

Fixtures can't be the only reason surely?

in one sense fixtures are the only reason, but in another he's clearly got fpl pedigree. i agree with you on lukaku btw. he was an eye-sore last night but i still think he's a great option for that run. i've considered all 3 of baines, lukaku and coleman for example.

also i wouldnt worry what's popular around here, simply use that as an opportunity

Everton are about 5th worst defence in the league going off member tables

Granted, they hadn't the best fixtures...but surely waiting to see if they can shut out weaker teams makes more sense than WCing for an everton defender!

Just to defend my thinking I only really want one heavy hitter up top, so its a choice between him or aguero... Why is costa so much the better pick?

it's was an extreme example to prove a point for sure. you also get my point though surely. they're both clearly top options, essentially insinuating one is twice as good as the other is a bit cheeky

I'm not, I'm a big advocate of Aguero. Have a look at my comment history from earlier today about him. But it can't be denied that Costa is the man in form, for the team in form, and is likely to provide better value at his price. Ideally I'd love to have both though.

Why do you want just one big hitter up top would be my question.

If Aguero and costa are going to be the two top scoring players in huge game, which is looking likely, surely it makes sense to have them both?

I agree that Everton have almost no chance of a CS this weekend but Everton will score goals against united and Baines is often involved whether it's a pen or an assist. I know I should probably wait until next week, was just wondering if I could justify getting him in this week

Did Arenal have defensive injuries last year when they were thrashed at Stamford Bridge, Anfield etc.?
Why is everyone saying their defence is terrible this season too? Genuine question, haven't watched them much.
Please don't tell me to look up members stats.

Say, Chelsea take a 2-0 lead after 55 mins, doesn't Mourinho usually shut up shop?

Aren't City way more likely to score 4 goals?

These are some of my thoughts on the generic Costa, Aguero captain choice. I still think fear will drive me to put it on Costa.

Wasn't too far a first team side although Wenger made the mistake of not starting Flamini. Wenger in general does not adapt his tactics against the tougher teams because he thinks his way is the best so he shouldn't settle. More often than not it blows up in his face as is evident through Man City + Chelsea games last season, Dortmund easily beating them this season, etc.

      2. JT's Dog
          11 years, 6 months ago

Jose shuts up shop but seems his players don't this year.
Think arsenal thing is due to people getting a lot of CS and mert goals last year makes this year seem worse, added to the fact many people thought they had a great bargain in chambers and hasn't really returned the promise

I've heard it and I agree with some of the points but midfielders are still getting points, be it cheap or premium midfielders, it doesn't matter. Personally I don't yet see the appeal of Baines except from fixtures. Fair enough he is Baines, he will get points, but fixtures don't mean that much when Everton are constantly tired from Europa League and don't seem to have any defensive stability (based on stats as well last season that they were overperforming).

I'm more than happy and will stick to my 3-4-3 for now until I see a proper reason to change.

love 433 and will probably go there at some point but only when the big defences like chelsea, man city, everton, arsenal etc start looking reliable for clean sheets. right now they're all weirdly bad. if you're relying on the 'little' teams in a back 4 then i think bubbles are set to burst
