Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

I have Clyne, Sterling Rooney. Welbeck is a get in behind and run type guy. won't much of that against the ultimate parked bus of world football. Rooney also isn't playing should be hungry to get goals and plenty of

Santi - may now move in the "hole" - but who knows what Mr Wenger has on his mind. Santi's first year with arsenal - mostly in the hole produced the following stats: -

    2012/2013 - 12 Goals, 13 Assists, 19 Bonus points - Total 205 points

After Ozil's arrivial Santi was mostly played out on the left: -

2013/2014 - 4 Goals, 8 Assists, 10 Bonus points - Total 128 points (although his playing time was approx 25% less than 2012/13, and didn't get as many set piece duties)

So if he is handed the position in the hole as opposed to Sanchez, or another option - could be a fantastic differential at ownership of 1.8% and a price of 8.2M

May have to reavaluate my priorities.....

Its such a risky move to go for him before we know he will be in the hole though. Lots of different options that Wenger can use

      1. cheeky_ash
        • 14 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Agree - but I think it's not a massive risk as the price isn't that big....the problem is that you may have to change another big hitter midfielder or downgrade one of your strikers to Sakho and the like to fit in a 5th midfielder....

Could be a sexy move considering Arsenals fixtures.

The sensible thing is play him in the hole where he was incredible in his first season as you showed... But Wenger lacks sense and will probably put him wide and put Jack in the hole or keep this stupid 4-1-4-1 up.

Who to bench out of my midfield 5? I know a lot will say that Downing probably shouldn't be my 5th mid but I feel comfortable having his consistent points in case I do need him as well as during Siggy's tough stretch between GWs 10-12. He's my first sub as we speak but tempted to play him against Burnley

    a) Fab
    b) Sterling
    c) ADM
    d) Siggy
    e) Downing

Think I've missed the boat on Ivan. so for a play every week defender

    a) Sensible - Baines - surely Everton will get better at the back?

    b) Slightly less sensible - Azpi - cheap but Chelsea with some tough games coming up

    c) Dance with the Devil - Lord Aleks - no words needed

Hate these questions. Ofcourse there is a chance of him scoring.
There is a chance of any attack minded player scoring at any given gameweek.
May aswell ask if your gonna score with a piglet or a model on the weekend

I have finished in the Top 50 in Sky the last three years, I am currently 300 something in UFPL and have had high finishes in EURO and WC games before too.

Yet, despite spending the majority of my "fantasy time" on it, I continue to do badly at FPL, not finishing in the top 100k last year and this year languishing at 400k +.

Does this happen to anybody else? And more importantly, does anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be happening to me?

I know all the games are different but at the end of the day it is about identifying the right players which applies to all the games.

I just don't understand how I can do so well in nearly all the other games I play apart from FPL, the one I care about the most!!

The big difference between many of the games is season long vs. weekly deadline. I prefer the discipline of knowing I have one transfer deadline a week, and that's it. The season long games are more full-on and Sky is a real mission!

I preferred the Champions league game, but Metro stopped. Only 12 transfer weeks to worry about, and midweek too.

I really like Sky, and once you get the hang of it, you can keep doing well at it (or so it seems with D1ASABLE and myself consistently doing well)

But definitely, deadlines and transfer rules really do make a difference.

A lot more competition in the FPL game compared to the others so even small mistakes are punished ten fold. Not to mention you need a lot of luck with your captaincy options and benchings. Early days yet though!

I cant comment on sky game but the rules are all different and in many cases you are able to get away with your mistakes eg WC game.

      not so in fpl.

Yeah true, but ultimately the games are all about the same thing, and points/rules only slightly differ, but by the looks of it, it is enough to make me suck at FPL!

am not too aware of the other games barring sky but you could just be better suited to limited transfer games. do you ever get urges in fpl to makes that extra transfer or that extra punt just because you can? meanwhile in the sky game you dont have the luxury so you get the necessarily slap in the face to stay sensible and disciplined all season

Yeah thats very true, I think the style of my fantasy game does suit Sky's rules better, I have tried to loosen up on FPL this year and take a few hits and jump on bandwagons quickly but it doesn't seem to have helped that much so far 🙂

could be something in that then. also it's not just about what you can't do, it's more what everyone else can't do either. more reactive players either have to reign it in or run out of transfers.
it's impressive that you finished so well 3 years in a row, i say this as after finishing exactly about 50th myself 3 seasons ago i then really struggled to get used to all the rule changes the year after like all the tackle bonus, pass bonus etc. think i gave up half way through that next season and just concentrated on fpl.

    Arsenal options?

Ox - short term, risky, but can be explosive and cheap.
Cazorla - if he is in the hole, with those fixtures - look two years ago - massive points machine
Wilshere - can be more advance, yet always one game away from injury
Sanchez - surely he is now nailed on by default? Will he finally explode? Massive price tag...
    Wallcot - too soon surely.

So strange, does not matter how many injuries, still no one nailed on and positions not clear.
