[sbu_large_image] Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

Anyone on WC going for differential galore?

Set up a draft with falcao, sanchez, kaboul, Dawson, azpil.

The current template seems painfully boring

      Kaboul is so tempting

Looks a total bargain, and has perfect h/a rotation with Chambers

Injuries certainly haven't made life easy for Wenger over the last couple of seasons.

With the top four looking harder and harder to make every year. Would you prioritize a top four finish again or a cup if you were Wenger?

    1. Dr Dream
      12 years, 26 days ago

Arsenal have to do top four, so do all those CL teams...More than a single season away can be harmful to the club....sadly...

Maybe but how did Wenger miss this Ozil one - At least he wont have to drop him now !!

    3. The Machine
      12 years, 26 days ago

You can't choose between top 4 and a cup if youre arsenal.

Maybe winning the league or cup competitions if we were lucky with our injuries.

The current arsenal team wold finish tip 4 even if we played our best xi in all competitions

top 4. hate to say it as fa cup final day was so special as a kid but domestic cups only seem a big deal if you're a 'smaller' team. the league cup especially just seems a joke

    5. 7shadesofsmoke
      12 years, 26 days ago

I'd prioritise the top 4 finish.

No CL football and the big names will be off.

They still have a very good squad and should be able to stay in the cups while people return - and January brings the chance to add where necessary.

Let's try again on a new page - Arsenal options?

Ox - short term, risky, but can be explosive and cheap.
Cazorla - if he is in the hole, with those fixtures - look two years ago - massive points machine
Wilshere - can be more advance, yet always one game away from injury
Sanchez - surely he is now nailed on by default? Will he finally explode? Massive price tag...
    Wallcot - too soon surely.

So strange, does not matter how many injuries, still no one nailed on and positions not clear.
Who would you pick - or will you just settle for welbeck and no more?

    1. emperikal
      12 years, 26 days ago

Just get Welbeck until Walcott gets back

Ox is as short term as Cazorla, also if Wenger goes 4-1-4-1 cazorla will be the one to drop out when ramsey returns (see previous formations)

      ---------Arteta/Flamini------
      -----Rambo----Wilshere---
      Ox/Walcott-------Sanchez

Cazorla plays till Rambo is back I think.

Who will bring the creative passes then? I think Cazorla will def start if Ozil doesn't play...but I'm no Arsenal expert so even this might happen...as long as Welbeck scores I'm happy

      2. 7shadesofsmoke
        12 years, 26 days ago

Rambo injury could be worse than first thought according to SSN.

I can see Cazorla getting plenty of minutes

    2. 7shadesofsmoke

Welbeck is still cheaper and more probable to be involved in the goals IMO.

trouble is cazorla could still be benched with ozil out. i dont trust wenger to not play wilshere if ozil is out, which is what cazorla would need to play centrally (say centrally as that's where he gets fpl points)

maybe wait to see if clichy gets the next game then pounce. ideally you want nasri fit if you have kolarov as that limits the 1 point cameo potential, silva, nasri, milner and navas all being fit is perfect for him. was shocked and disappointed he didnt score that chance against villa where milner played the corner to him low on the edge of the area. any half decent first touch and he then blasts it in for 1-0

First off, I need to get rid of colo... But he plays lei so its not like it's against man city...

A: fonte--> Ivan (that would put me with Ivan, clyne, and colo (need to get rid of colo tho)

    B: de Gea--> guzan and colo --> -4

C: Wait until next week to do 2 transfers without a hit bc is baines really going to get 4 more than colo this week? I can see it but not positive

His tracking back may be non existent but he is a key when it comes to creating, which is is primary job. Not saying he's been great but if he wasn't so famous before joining arsenal people would consider him highly underrated

              Have to agree with that.

However I feel Ozil being out for so long could well be bless in disguise for Arsenal. I expect Santi to play in middle.

    Guys.

I'm trying to understand why some of you are prepared to drop Fabs for Chadli. He's proven in FPL: -

    Year........Mins..GS..AST..PTS
    2010/11...1880...3.....13...128
    2009/10...2188...15...15...214
    2008/09...1900...3.....10...108
    2007/08...2857...7.....20...205
    2006/07...3185...2....14...182

    Chadli's stats last year: -

    2013/14...1452...1....3....58

Whilst I see Chadli has found his form and maybe his position in Spurs - Form is temporary, class is permanent!

I wouldn't mind getting him temporarily while he's form.

I can buy class in Baines with the extra 3m or so 😉

    3. 7shadesofsmoke
      12 years, 26 days ago

you are actually sighting Chadli's performance last year as a gauge for his points this year.

      Madness.

He's already on 42 and he only played 7 games!

Different manager, different system, key role (2nd striker OoP regularly)...

I'm not saying Fab -> Chadli is a no brainer, but it certainly not a stupid move.

Ramsey's stats were horrible before he found his feet last season. Chadli could be a similar case and probably is

Don't forget yaya before last season too

i agree fabregas is more proven, but it is also a bit harsh to judge chadli on last season. he was basically a deep mid for sherwood's time in charge so the majority of those mins, and under AVB he was never fit for more than couple of games at a time, and when he was he was feeding soldado. for an attacking mid especially you need that rhythm of starts

    7. Dr Dream
      12 years, 26 days ago

Nobody has been doing Cesc > Chadli...They may have done Cesc and Ulloah > Chadli and Aguero...or....Cesc and Duff > Chadli and Baines...but I doubt you will find anybody doing it as a stand alone transfer...

Thought as much myself. I'll be doing it for -4 as well, Wilson + Sterling > Lallana + Baines. No doubt many would see it as sideways/suicidal - I think not.

    Repost(posted on wrong article!):
Liverpool fans - is Lallana nailed? Been quietly impressed with him the last 2 games, see him as a real viable differential to Sterling (teams are 'on' to Sterling now imo.). Plus the extra 0.5 allows me to get Baines.

I know that Cesc seems to be the big midfielder to lose in order to get Baines, but I'm not convinced his returns will dry up. I think I would be more inclined to lose Sterling (controversial I know).

    1. 7shadesofsmoke

Sterling vs QPR is too good to miss

    4. Dr Dream
      12 years, 26 days ago

Cesc offers not much more than Gerrard playing in his current position..both on corners and set pieces in equally attacking teams...Cesc has the better creativity whilst Gerrard has his pens...Of course that all changes if he moves back in the hole..

      1. Dr Dream
        12 years, 26 days ago

Not meant as an insult btw...Gerrard will once again be up there at the end...just Cesc may be on another plane altogether in the hole...
