Having previously assessed the form of forwards and midfielders across the last four Gameweeks, our third Key Performance Indicator (KPI) article of the international break casts an eye over the defenders.

For the unfamiliar, these Key Performers Indicator (KPI) tables use a series of key stats to allow our members to track a trend in player performance as a guide to their form. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics, such as minutes per chance, and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain patterns of improvement or decline in these areas. For those unfamiliar, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

Already looking ahead , what combo would you rather to feel the gaps :
    _________Fabianski
    Baines Chambers Hutton Yun ***
    Sanchez Hazard Downing *** Boyd
    ____Aguero Costa Austin

    A: Dummet AdM
    B: Terry Chadli

Basically Adm attacking threat vs Terry CS and Chadli goals , im leaning towards B ( could have just posted A and B but rest of players are relevant )

That's a really tough one. I would go with B because having a Chelsea defender over the next stretch will be nice. And Chadli is good value for money.

That's tough, probably B since your defence would be pretty weak with Dummett in there. I would rather have Siggy over Chadli if that was possible too.

B otherwise defence is too light imo...I prefer Siggy over Chadli though

    5. Jay_

Thanks for replies all , B is flexible and Azpi /Siggy is affordable but I already have Chadli so would probably stick with him , yes and a Chelsea defender seems the way to go , it's just finding the right one 🙂 Terry seems to getting closer towards scoring , Azpi maybe rotated and Ivan too expensive

B would basically give you the same outfield 10 that I am working towards (except azpi over terry) so I guess b

🙂 to get B I need to do
        Welbeck > Austin gw13
        Bertand > Chelsea defender gw14
And swap Moore for Yun when possible after

Big test for Rodgers. With Sturridge out Liverpool have averaged a point a game (8 games, 8 points). By the time Sturridge comes back, I reckon he'll get sacked. He needs to change his tactics and play Lambert if he wants a chance of keeping his job over this next month or two.

He may be "shite" but when he plays he opens up the game a lot. He's good at holding up the ball and passing. This allows our attack to at least flow a bit.

          Won't happen thou.

He will stick by his ready made Suarez replacement - Balotelli.

I agree with everything you said except for that he needs to play Lambert. He's as good as done in my eyes and should never play with exception to cup games. I'd rather see him give Borini a run of games.

Either play Borini and Balotelli up top together (they can't play as lone strikers) or play Lambert by himself. If Rodgers fails to do either and continues playing Balotelli by himself, he'll lose his job.

Now that is some more sense I could get behind. Still not so sure about how well Borini and Balo would be as a partnership though...sadly..

And deserve to imo. He needs a second up top to pull defenders away from the one striker.
Also it would open things up for Sterling to have a bigger impact.

I like this idea, Borini unlikely to hold it on his own & that could be the itch Balo needs to scratch. Coupled with Balo's horrible workrates, Borini could compliment him nicely.
Maybe w/ Sterling in the hole even

yeah. i don't get why BR hasn't tried this yet. I mean it's got to be at least worth a try. Everybody, Balo included, knows he needs a partner.

Do you think we could or should recall Origi from loan in January?

Apparently we have to pay 3M-5M to do so. I wouldn't. I think the expectations to do well are too high for a 19 year old. And he's a striker too.

yeah there would be enormous pressure on him but he has been having a good season. i think we need to buy another striker, it's pretty ridiculous how much we have been affected by one injury.

Agreed, Balotelli is just false hope at this point. Has he shown any promise thus far? Even at Milan, he was performing at a mediocre level.

I'm not a Liverpool fan and I'm sure if I was I would be calling for Balo's head, but I can't help but think his failings are very much because of the way BR has been deploying him. I think he would thrive alongside Sturridge, but obviously he's been out, regardless he needs to be playing with another striker. He obviously is not successful as a lone striker and I don't know why everyone and their dog can see this but BR can't.

        1. Lallana_

Balotelli has stated that he can't play as well by himself up front. Unfortunately Rodgers still does. I love Rodgers, a great man...but he needs to do something.

          1. Zasa
            • 12 Years
            11 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, to add to this, it's not like BR intended to buy him to play up front. He obviously saw something in a Balo + Sturridge duo up top, w/ all the support in the hole & behind to boot.

When all fit & firing, I think BR definitely has a very nice team to throw in to be a contender. Sadly though, you can't count on Gerrard to bail you every time, he's 34 & just had an exhaustive WC + CL too boot for this year. He can't be playing 3 times a week & expect to put in his best

Plus, Henderson's support has been waning tremendously over the past month & has had zero to little influence in the midfield. The last England game demonstrated that fully

Sterling I would agree is tired, he's played in nearly every outing for Pool the last 12 months, he too has every chance to burn out young the way BR is working him.
Give Markovic a chance, we've only seen an ounce of what he can do,
Can too, great midfield player, young & hungry for a chance to outshine

BR is just too rigid right now, he showed signs of breaking out of the formula against Madrid & Chelsea, & he needs to keep that philosophy going

To add to that, Lambert did well last season despite his age. Playing him may not make sense on paper but statistically Liverpool have a better chance of scoring when he's playing. Him and Lallana have great link-up play.

Gibbs is always hurt, as AR says, and Arsenal defense is a clear cut beneath Soton to date in my view. I would also not want Gibbs over Chambers as I'd prefer to bank that difference. I also don't really think that Arsenal have such terrific fixtures from a clean sheet standpoint from here until the January WC.

I can't recall. He may have gotten a game there in pre-season? I think he's mainly been filling in at CB though since Mert and Kos have taken turns being out going all the way back to preseason. I just remember when Wenger bought Chambers he mentioned something about envisioning him in that role. It's not as though him playing there and having some growing pains along the way would be worse than keeping Flamini there. Flamini is just pure shit.

Long and possibly pointless post coming.

Okay, someone made a post yesterday wondering if Lescott would be able to muscle Costa about in the same way Skrtel and Dunne did to good effect recently and it got me to thinking how much Costa relies on his strength to bully the opposition. Costa is 6ft 2” around 85kg. He’s a big guy. Most of the CB’s I’ve looked at are a similar size and build if a bit lighter, around 6ft 2” 82kg.

Looking at the Liverpool game, Costa and Skrtel had a hard fought physical battle. Skrtel is slightly taller at 6ft 3” but a bit lighter at 81kg. He did reasonably well against Costa, Costa’s goal coming from a deflected cross into his path had little to do with physicality and more to do with Costa’s predatory instincts.

Costa was kept noticeably quiet against QPR, where it was also noted that Richard Dunne ‘did a job on him’. Richard Dunne is again 6ft 2” but intriguingly a bit stockier than Costa and quite a bit heavier than Skrtel at 88kg. It seems there could be an argument made that Costa played right into his hands if he was trying to outmuscle Richard Dunne.

Looking further back in the weeks where Costa really came to the fore bagging a brace and then a hat trick, it is interesting to see that in both these games, the CB’s were significantly smaller and lighter than Costa. I looked at the goals, and while most were from fluid play, great passing and finishing from Fabregas and Costa, there was a case in each game of Costa shrugging off the CB to power home a header.

Jordi Amat is 6ft 78Kg replaced by Fernandez, 6ft 2” 81kg in the game where Costa bagged a hat trick. Jagielka is also 6ft , 83kg up against Costa where he bags a brace.

In short, it seems kinda obvious. Big Striker does well against small Centre Backs from set piece situations. Stop the presses! 😆 And in truth I haven’t done much research on this, as there are a lot of other external factors. The quality of the CB’s, the fact that Costa scores plenty from open play etc. but I think it is worth noting especially when considering putting the armband on him that Costa’s physicality was a factor in each of the times he scored a big haul and could well be a factor again.

And for reference, West Broms CB paring is Lescott 6ft 2” 82kg, Dawson 6ft 2” 85kg. All height and weight I just googled so don’t shoot me if I’m wrong 😀

I'm thinking , league leaders at home , attacking philosophy, Costa spearhead of attack clinical finisher, will do better than City in bad form away to defensively solid Swans and Aguero has been wasteful

I like to double down on good fixture runs for form teams
And Costa looks like the 2nd best striker and hazard the 2nd best Mf so both warrant inclusion when looked at in isolation.

At least for the next 3 weeks. After that I'd probably prefer Walcott over a Chelsea mid anyway. From memory, the Christmas period is when Mou really grinds out results/narrow wins.

Yeah I mean I am looking at possibly being able to double Chelsea defense and have Baines in addition to Walcott Hazard Alexis in mid versus having to sort of rip it up in order to accommodate Costa in up top. Think it might be more fun to go without Costa..though far more risky.

well it's really down to Oscar + Coleman vs Costa + Naylor for me, and looking at the latter pair's form has swayed me, not too mention Costa is on 4 YC's and up against Lescott and Dawson this round 😀

Have Hazard since creation, though am still monitoring him vs AdM long term. One has to go in order to fund Costa which will liven up my teams ability to climb the rankings. Unless Costa gets another YC, or just shows horrible form, it may even prove to be a great asset having three premium mids on my side & opting for a Giroud or Bony for the secod tier spot (At the expense of Costa of course). Though right now, Costa just seems the way to go for me, another great skipper option to compliment Aguero.

Costa will definitely be on my side, will be planning on having him for a while (if possible), he's in form + now w/ Sturridge out, he has poor competition for the second big hitter spot
The only strikers who might overtake him are Giroud & possibly Bony/Gomis.

For the last spot, I'm eyeing up Azpi or JT. JT's recent goal scoring threat from set-pieces both internationally & at club level has proven hard to resist. Though, maybe Azpi's total BAPS might even out or even better JT's goal scoring through out the season. Currently on Azpi.

The one thing about captaincy for Costa is that looking at his home games from now until Jan WC is GW14 16 and 18 are all favorable with Spurs, Hull, and West Ham respectively. However in that time Aguero in GW14 has at Sunderland which isn't great but still captainable and then Alexis has GW16 NEW and GW18 QPR....both fantastic captaincy games....while Aguero has away games in those two even though those two away games are against Leicester and West Brom. In short, I don't think the captaincy option of Costa is tooo too overwhelming of a factor.

Most ridiculous thing I've heard in along time:

Manchester United are planning to sell Angel Di Maria, 26, to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer to create funds for a sensational move for either Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, 25, or Cristiano Ronaldo, 29

Not really. Chelsea attack fit and firing and best team clear cut in the league while there are at least some question marks surrounding City. As our distraught friend stated though, expect both to score at least one this weekend.

Aguero as I don't have Costa. I would captain Aguero even if I had Costa though. Fit Aguero at home to anyone other than Chelsea is an auto-captain for me.
