Robin van Persie scores twice as United see off Southampton to move into third. Wayne Rooney and Dusan Tadic bag an assist apiece, whilst Graziano Pelle’s first goal since Gameweek 8 isn’t enough to prevent the Saints slipping to another defeat.

Van Persie at the double

At a time when Sergio Aguero owners are looking for a likely exit route, the United frontman stepped up with a deadly brace to fire his side into third spot last night. There’s no doubt that Van Persie has toiled under Louis van Gaal so far but his recent form suggests he may have turned the corner – that’s three goals, an assist and four bonus points in his last trio of appearances now, and at 12.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he is certainly affordable for those holding Aguero. Upcoming opponents Liverpool, Villa and Newcastle have all tightened up in recent outings, though, and with far cheaper options offering better form, the 2%-owned Dutchman may remain a differential for now.

Rooney Ticks Over

The England international arrived at St Mary’s in decent form, having scored in each of his last two league outings. Handed a role alongside Van Persie as Van Gaal turned to a 3-4-1-2 formation, Rooney’s dead-ball duties came to fruition after he provided the assist for the Dutchman’s second. Whilst his minutes have been diminished by suspension and injury this term, Rooney has been relatively consistent for the Red Devils – he’s now scored or assisted in six of his last eight in the league. With Radamel Falcao remaining on the bench for the 90 minutes, Rooney’s more advanced berth may well turn a few more heads, with a 10.4 price tag far easier on the budget than Van Persie’s.

Pelle Ends Goal Drought

The Italian was back amongst the goals at St Mary’s after firing his first strike in seven Gameweeks. Pelle has dropped from 8.5 to 8.1 in recent weeks as his woeful form persuaded plenty to look elsewhere but last night’s strike served a reminder of his abilities and took the Saints summer signing up to second spot amongst forwards in the FPL game. An assist from Dusan Tadic – his first points since Gameweek 8 – suggests Ronald Koeman’s main men still have the potential to deliver ahead of a run which pits them against a trio of opponents (bur, EVE, cpl) that have been far from convincing at the back.

Saints Stutter Again

It’s four matches without a clean sheet now for Ronald Koeman’s side as the stern fixtures prove a test too far. Having conceded just five times in the first 11 Gameweeks, Southampton have since shipped seven goals in the subsequent four, and with Toby Alderweireld joining the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork in the injury room, their toils look set to continue. Koeman’s defence face Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United in the next six and may be best avoided until the schedule smiles kindly again in Gameweek 22.

Why do people say getting "cover" or having "enough cover" from a team is a myth? It's perfectly logical.

Let's say you have Fabregas and Costa and no City-players, and let's assume you predict Chelsea and City to score the same amount of goals in the next 10 gameweeks, and you think have to choose between hazard and yaya for a free spot in midfield:

If you choose Hazard and Chelsea score 2 goals per game you'd need Hazard, Fabregas and Costa to be involved in 75% of Chelsea's goals and assists, basically means you hope Drogba, Remy, Schurrle, Oscar, Ivanovic, azpi, terry etc will get no assist or goals.

If you choose Yaya city can score 1 goal and you can still have great success with your pick, if Chelsea score 1 goal then at least one of your picks will fail. If Chelsea score alot of goals in a game you probably won't fall too far behind in OR if you already have two players, but if City score alot of goals you will fall behind with no city-"coverage".

If "coverage" is a myth, then many people here would double or triple up on defenders regularly.

Same goes for Siggy/Bony and Downing/Sakho/Carrol etc, and I think Arsenal is the best example of a team where you don't want to get too much coverage since they extremely rarely score more than 2 goals, so even if both Sanchez and Ramsey look good going forward, and maybe Walcott also soon, I wouldn't get more than 1 players from them. If you get Walcott and Ramsey for example you're pretty much hoping that Sanchez, Giroud, Welbeck, Cazorla, Wilshere etc won't get much points at all in the future

defenders all get the same points for a clean sheet though, mids/strikers is a different proposition

what if city score a lot of goals and it doesn't involve the player you have from them? you still lose ground

for example, people are considering getting nasri for city coverage, which isn't that wise as he isn't involved that much in terms of end product

I still just get the players I think will get most points, regardless of who they play for and coverage etc.

Yep, those who don't believe in attacking coverage don't take into consideration 'combined points potential' of the two or three players involved. Generally it would requirer the team to score at least 2 or 3 goals per game for it to be worthwhile.

The problem is that 'coverage' in an FPL context doesn't have a clear definition. I think having the key attacking player in each of the performing teams is 'coverage' more or less. Doubling up or tripling up on a particular teams attack reduces your overall coverage as you end up missing an attacking outlet from another performing team. Sometimes however there is a team which is simply on fire and has great fixtures, only in those circumstances it might be worth doubling up.

I look at their recent form. Sanchez is the only real option at Arsenal at the moment, why would I want Cazorla? Bony has scored the most goals in the league in 2014 and Siggy is high up in the list of returns for midfielders - no problem having both.

I have no Liverpool "coverage". Should I be on the safe side and get Henderson in just in case they pick up some form?

I look at the players form, doesn't matter who they play for. To get Cazorla or Henderson in just because I want Arsenal or Liverpool covered is silly.

I already have Fabregas and Costa and I have a choice between either Hazard or Yaya for a midfield spot. Using your theory I should go for Yaya which actually would be a smart move but are you telling me Yaya will score more points than Hazard in the next few weeks? Maybe, maybe not. There will be weeks when Yaya gets nothing and Hazard gets points.

I'm not saying Cazorla is an option of course.. but Ramseys stats are beginning to look good (and also his returns), so I won't be surprised if some people will consider doubling up on Arsenal soon (or already have with Welbeck + Sanchez in the past, which I don't think is a good idea.

I have both Bony and Siggy, not saying it is wrong to double-up, just that getting coverage certainly is a part of the game. I wouldn't touch Liverpool yet either, a better example is if you have Bony and don't have Sakho, and you choose between Downing and Siggy, then I'd be inclined to choose Downing because of coverage

Suppose it is easy to use any example to suit what side of the fence you sit on.
I could say that having sterling gives me good Liverpool cover, then he gets one assist in five games, where as could have got hazard and oscar and they get 4 goals and 3 assists between them over those games.

Cover comes into play when you think two players will score similarly but are from different teams, did you think Sterling would score slightly less points but chose him because he played for Liverpool?

See you are falsely applying coverage theory to a team which isn't performing. It only really applies in a more relevant context. Nobody in their right mind is going to consider a Liverpool player at the moment

But you are always going to pick performing players to justify your point and then when I pick under performing player I am wrong. Though I need to pick an good player who isn't returning to prove point. It's a big circle we will run round here 🙂 .
You could also look at it that if team A is going to score 2 goals then having two players increases your chance of getting returns, whereas if team A and B score two goals you have reduced your chances of landing either by only having one player.

Lest say there are 7 teams that are performing and there are certain players amongst those teams that are doing the job. We have to select 7 attacking players. Hence why its necessary to only consider picking players from teams that are performing.

You might chose to triple up on one team if you wish but you'd need that team to score a lot of goals on a regular basis for it to be worthwhile in order for all 3 to be amongst the points.

Ok change sterling to Nasri if you like, or cazorla prior to weekend.
Still giving you cover but not returning, which is my original point, you can select individuals from any of those teams to suit your argument either way.

But you are painting a picture that by getting cover from all the teams you will get the points when they score, which would be almost impossible to predict. It is very easy to have coverage and still miss out on points, trust me it is common practice with me.
For me there are times when doubling up is great, for how long depends on the form and fixtures. Sturridge and saurez last year were perfect example of that. They did assist each other a lot but also went through spells when one got lots more than other, but by doubling up it almost guaranteed the big points when they arrived.
Although having said all that, this season I have only done it with the Chelsea midfield, but that is more to do with so many players getting injured this year.

I wouldn't consider Nasri to be good Citeh cover. They need to have a high goal involvement. There are really only 1 or 2 people for most teams that can qualify as attacking cover for that team

I don't buy any of the arguments you gave, but I do think that coverage is useful for another reason, which is flexibility. If you have three players from a team that suddenly hit a poor run of form, for whatever reason, it is a lot harder to adjust than if you only have one player from that team. However, for teams like Chelsea who are unlikely to have any sustained poor form this season, this isn't really an issue so I am happy to have three Chelsea players in my side. Generally, I think that having only one or two players from a team is sensible not because it means that you can 'cover the points' of other teams, but rather because it allows you to adapt more quickly to evolving situations.

The really good picks tend to me a focal point for their team and involved in most their goals. For that reason it can be hard to find 2 of those in the same team.

But i cant see any way in which whether or not i have bony will impact on siggy's points so why would it therefore be a significant factor in how i make my decision to get siggy or not.

The only advantages i can see of spreading your players across clubs is the flexibility it can give you to manage fixtures, reduced chance you will max out your players from one club thereby limiting your choices and the greater variation in captaincy choices

so if its 50/50 who will score more i would probably choose to split between the 2 clubs

I completely disagree with this post. I had two Southampton defenders, I currently have two Chelsea defenders.

Without wishing to sound disrespectful, diversification is for people who don't have faith in their convictions. If you think Ramsey will score 6ppg over the next month and Sanchez will score 7, then get both. They are independent. You shouldn't go and get Toure just because you worry whether both your players will get points in any one game. You have to have a long term time horizon and ride out the volatility of having concentrated bets.

I have double chelsea-def, bony+siggy etc, im doubling up often, what I'm saying is that in situations where you are choosing between two players that you think will score similarly, I'd choose the one from the team that I don't have any players in rather than the team I already have two players, to have cover from both teams, both for points and for fixtures/cancelled games, and to have a free spot if you want another player from that team later

I disagree with most of this. To win this game it is very simple, you want the players who score the most points.

A FPL team with Fabregas, Hazard and Costa all season would be doing well irrespective of the fact they all play for Chelsea. Their point scoring is totally independent of whether or not which or how many of them you've selected them in your team (although it doesn't always feel like that).

The advantages of having coverage for attacking players are:
      - to get a better spread of captaincy options
      - emotional - you can feel some FPL involvement in more matches, irrationally hoping all the goals scored will be for your players

      1. Punty

Well you have an open spot from the team if another player rises as a very good option (instead of when you already have 3), are less exposed to cancelled games during the winter, and very often increase your chance of getting BPS, Hazard, Fab and Costa can't all get 3 bps in a game

Cancellations and DGWs are a fair point and become more relevant from now on. Agreed.

Another way of looking at the BPS is that you are more likely to get some BPS every week because you've increased the 'coverage' of a particular team. I'm not convinced by that argument either though...

Anyway, its a good subject for a hot topic, thanks

You are fixated on what happens in a single gw and this is the problem with coverage as it makes sense in a single gw due to spreading fixture difficulty for your team but over a longer period it makes no sense. They can't all get bonus in one game but they can all be amongst the highest bonus scorers in the game over a 10 game period.

You are denying that some players have a high goal involvement average for their team. In which case you can reasonably expect certain individuals to be involved if their team scores a goal. Coverage only applies to these sorts of players.

'you want the players who score the most points' is probably the dumbest argument you can make. You cannot predict who will get the most points but you can use probabilities, likelihoods etc to make an informed choice. Coverage comes into that.

Fair enough - I think we have different interpretations of probability theory, which I don't think is going to be resolved here.

Chelsea are the best team in the league and have scored the most goals. I don't think that is a surprise to most of us from before the season started. Fabregas and Hazard lie second and third in the points scored rankings with very similar overall totals and bonus point scores. Both have proven track records of high scoring in FPL so, again, their good performance is not a surprise. On that basis, I don't see how you can say one is a valid pick for your team and the other isn't. That stands independently of whether you already own the other one.

This game is all about predicting who will get the most points. Isn't that why we come on here?

Teams such as Chelsea are probably worth doubling up on as they tend to score enough goals to keep the two players ticking over. Teams such as West Ham and Swansea? perhaps not so much unless they have form and fixtures and doing very well.

coverage is a myth, live with it. you dont want arsenal coverage, you want sanchez. earlier, you didnt want manu coverage, you wanted di maria (when he was scoring well). when the season began, you didnt want chelsea coverage, you wanted fabregas & costa. atm, hazard seems like a better bet than costa. they are individuals, not coverage. also, west ham coverage sounds a bit stupid. but downing seems like a good pick. again, individuals, not coverage.

You are making the argument about how illogical it is very well thanks jtd.

Sterling is a great example. He nowhere near covered Liverpool (or indeed suarez) last season and the season before it was Rooney not covering rvp (as I know to my cost).

You don't need 2 or 3 goals a game to gain a good return from three attacking players in one team as you don't expect them to score every gw. With bonus points and clean sheet points midfielders can get 11 pts for a goal in one match. A top ppg for a mid would be circa 6 ppg. If the mid gets one assist over the next two he would probably achieve this. So that is 2 goals in three games for one player. If you have another mid doing the same and a fwd getting a couple of goals then your triumvirate are doing fine for 4 goals scored by the team over three matches. Add in the fact that most top teams will average more than 2 goals a game and allow for particularly good runs of fixtures where you load up on a teams attacking players and you start to see why cover is a silly concept.

Bottom line is when you look at the top 8 attacking scorers in fpl this season 3 are from Chelsea one from arsenal and one from city. In the coverage theory people would be trying to cover Chelsea points with one of the attackers losing out on the other two while having coverage of teams like Liverpool, Utd and spurs whose top scoring players were not matching these top scorers. Also trying to "cover city and arsenal attacking points with other arsenal players would gave killed your OR too.

You are making a false assumption that FPL players will want 'cover' from United, Spurs and Arsenal. This isn't necessarily the case. It might be more important to have attacking cover form the likes of West Ham, Swansea and Southampton. Its about getting cover from the form teams. Which coincidentally might include doubling up on Chelsea players when they are on fire and are the best team in the league. To me I still consider that cover but doubling up to capitalise on their hot streak.

Secondly cover is only relevant to players that have a high goal involvement. Clearly Suarez and Sturridge had higher goal involvement than Sterling so would be the priority when selecting Liverpool cover.

This is what cover is though. Getting players from the big teams with good fixtures. The reason most use cover is it is not practical to have the best player from each top side due to monetary constraints. So when Utd, Liverpool spurs had a good run of fixtures people who subscribed to the cover theory would have had the likes of sterling, adm/Rooney, eriksen/lamela/ade/chadli as cover in these teams instead of having another Chelsea attacker thereby costing themselves points.

Imo you don't cover a lower team you just get in their best player if you want them as they are generally cheaper.

Re having the highest goal involvement from a team this is not cover it is just getting the best player. Plenty of people had Gerrard sturridge AND suarez last season to great effect instead of covering a form team like Chelsea or City. You can't have everyone.

See we have a differing understanding as to what cover is. Hence why there is so much confusion about it. Going by your definition I would agree that it seems silly. However I don't believe your definition is totally correct. Normal FPL players don't get a player from say Liverpool or Spurs if they are under performing for the sake of cover (going by your definition). So to me this makes your definition incorrect.

Regarding goal involvement. It is relevant if there are say two players with high goal involvement and you only really want one in order to allow for another player you want in another performing team (not necessarily a non performing top 6 side).

I guess this is the crux of it.

Personally I don't look at a team like city who are in good form with good fixtures coming up and think I need one of their players for cover. I will look at the team, try and assess who is likely to do well and see if they will provide value. I'm cities case I don't think yaya will provide value so I'm not going to get him just to cover city. I like silva and think he may provide better value than yaya but with games coming thick and fast and question marks over his fitness and what position he will be playing now Aguero is out I think I'll probably be giving him a miss too. I currently have Sanchez in midfield (who I saw as a capt option when he was playing up front) and am thinking of getting Ramsey instead of chadli regardless as I think he will score better than Silva. I think someone subscribing to the cover theory would be looking to bring someone in from city despite the fact that there were other players out there who might score better especially if it meant doubling up on players from another team.

Most of what you say just makes sense and as a result I wouldn't call it cover at all. If a team is in form and has good fixtures of course you will look to this team for the potential best scoring players for the next gws. But you don't like most subscribe to notion that getting the second or third most valuable player is cover for that team or the score of that teams big player. You also don't subscribe to the notion of having a player from an under performing team like say Utd or liverpool just because they have good fixtures and are seen as potential big scoring teams either. So like I say you basically do not follow the principles of the commonly held definition of cover at all from what I can see.

City is a funny one at the moment. I have bought Dzeko and Yaya in the hope that at least one of them will provide good City cover. Its a gamble because really it was just Aguero prior to this but things might now change now that he's out (who will score the goals now?). Citeh have great fixtures so I'm still expecting them to get plenty of goals (enough for both to do well). However as both players are trolls I kind of expect at least one of them to fail so I'm hedging my bets a bit for the moment.

The funny thing is I've just gone dzeko over benteke this week. You might call this move cover but I don't as I was more than happy to completely ignore city as I have done with United all season so far even through their nice fixtures.

The reason I went for dzeko over benteke was because I think city have better fixtures and dzeko's record of 10 goals in 14 games without Aguero seemed to good to ignore based on those fixtures.

You might say that I am covering cities fixtures by doing this move and to a degree maybe I am but if I thought villa had better fixtures and benteke was likely to score more then I'd have been quiet happy to go benteke and forego city coverage.

Nice discussion though and thanks for the replies. If more people used the forum like this I think we'd get a lot more productive posts.

Just because people don't do it, doesn't mean they are correct.
For defenders at least, the optimal play is often to double up on one in form team.

If you had two SOU or two CHE defenders so far this season you'd have more points than if you owned a City or Utd defender for "cover".

You make some good points about the problems with doubling and tripling up on players from one team, but I don't think you are discussing "coverage"...at least not he same "coverage" that is often criticized.

"Coverage" is criticized because people say things like:

"I can't afford Hazard, so I've Matic as Chelsea coverage"

This is the fallacy/myth that most often complained about. Owning a random player from an in-form team will not get you points 🙂

You've addressed a different issue I think, but you've done it well.
      Good post Punty! 🙂

Yep agree with all that. I would suggest that Caz and Matic don't qualify as adequate cover. I think to understand what cover is it really must only be applied to players with a high 'goal involvement', then cover theory makes sense.

You are right, this is the most infuriating argument made by those who endorse cover.

It will very often go like this. I can't afford Aguero, yaya or silva so I must get dzeko as I have no other city coverage. I already have siggy so I have to go dzeko over bony as siggy is my swansea cover and dzeko will be my city cover. Ridiculous illogical strategy.

I usually tend to focus on getting the best player(s) in the game, and at their respective clubs.

For example, all of Hazard, Costa and Fábregas have scored well. I have had all three for a few weeks. They don't all do well in one go, but they tick along nicely. Now Agüero is out, Yaya is the best City option. He is now very popular due to penalties etc.

I think people buy cover without even knowing, the excuse they need a player from say City, with their fixtures, is often used.

Same goes for defenders with easy fixtures, people rave about getting players from that team.

If you offered someone an attack with the likes of Hazard, Fabregas, Oscar, Costa, ADM, RVP and Rooney (any combination) they wouldn't want it. I find it better to spread players around from different teams, ensuring you have the best options and thus the best possible points total.

Judging by what BFS said regarding Enner Valenica (Clarets source that Doosra posted a few days ago), Sakho will start the next few. B is more of a 'wait and see' option as both have fitness issues. I posted the option because I realised I had enough to make the choice. Silva could be any other mid.

Van Persie just scored 2 goals against the best defence in the league, he may turn out to be more than just a differential.

A defense missing a certain Toby & a weakened midfield. Spreading that Kun money around remains the better strategy IMO

It didn't look that great for the goals they conceded.

To be fair both were gifts, albeit great finishes.

There's never been a question around RVP's ability to finish a chance, just Utd's ability to create them.

How does this crazy 5-3-2 lineup look for this GW...

    Fabianski
    Baines - Clyne - Bertrand - Wisdom - Hutton
    Hazard - Downing - Sigurdsson
    Costa - Rooney

    (Gilks - Boyd - Fabregas - Austin)

Main dilemma is Boyd or Wisdom/Hutton I guess. Advice would be appreciated lads! Thanks in advance.

      Will do for this week.

Ideally want Sanchez and some City players in there.

The Sanchez Plan is to downgrade Rooney to Sakho/Cisse and upgrade Boyd to Sanchez.

Not sure how I would fit some City in there. Reluctant to lose Hazard or Fabregas as they have been consistent with the points.

No Aguero seems to help him quite a bit.

Which option is better with a FT?

    Foster

    Baines, Azpi, Dummet, Yun, Chambers

    Sanchez, Fab, Siggy, Downing, Boyd,

    Costa, Bony, Austin

    A)Fab to Yaya
    B Chamber to Zab

I asked this earlier but wasn't clear. Will people keep Soton defenders for the next batch of difficult fixtures or will they bench or sell them?

They are season keepers for me. Especially for the price I got them at

Keeping for now. Mainly because I have other matters to address that are more urgent.

Tough one, isn't it. Do you mean wait for tomorrow to see if Silva plays? Yaya is banned I think. Thing is with Yaya, he is one yellow away from ban, and is significantly more than Silva. Hmmmmm
