The Gameweek rolls on courtesy of a clash between two old foes. United host Liverpool in an Old Trafford cauldron to provide a tumultuous start to the day’s action which concludes with Tottenham’s visit to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea.

This afternoon is all about events in Manchester, however, as old rivalries are renewed against a backdrop which finds both sides battling to maintain a challenge for a top four place. United’s lot is much improved following five straight wins, whilst pressure on Brendan Rodgers mounts following a string of poor results and hollow performances.

The team news finds Louis van Gaal tinkering once again. It appears that the Dutchman has reverted to a 4-4-2, recalling fit-again Phil Jones and Jonny Evans to his defence, with Marcos Rojo sidelined with a training ground injury. Despite Falcao’s availability, James Wilson comes into the attack alongside the revived Robin van Persie, with Wayne Rooney presumably adopting a withdrawn role or even deployed in wide areas.

Rodgers also makes changes – big ones at that. Simon Mignolet is the fall guy after an assortment of abject displays between the sticks: Brad Jones is the beneficiary as the Belgian drops to the bench. He’s joined by Rickie Lambert and the returning Mario Balotelli, as the Liverpool boss looks set to give Raheem Sterling a run in attack, deploying the likes of Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho to buzz around him in support; an intriguing set-up.

The Old Trafford clash is followed shortly after by our tea-time fixture as Spurs drop in on Garry Monk’s Swansea – a scenario which will have Fantasy managers willing Gylfi Sigurdsson to raise his game and return points against his former employers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any early opinions on Silva vs Mata vs Cazorla? If RVP is back in the fold maybe we should get more of the band back together.

I don't think Mata's game time is guaranteed and Silva surely needs a good striker to prosper. I think I prefer Cazorla out of those. But they're all a bit punty at the moment in my opinion.

Cazorla is the best option and most nailed on of these punts.
said it three weeks ago that if he continues playing in the hole, he would be a good option.
since then he even added pens :/

If you sell a striker for £75mil and your first choice striker in injury prone, you need to invest that money so that you have sufficient cover in the meantime.

Balotelli is a risk that Liverpool didn't need to take for a club with £75mil free to spend. At minimum, £25mil should've bought a better striker, Lambert was still a good 3rd choice striker for £4mil though.

Can is a decent player and I'm surprised he wasn't used today. Mignolet was needed for a game as big as that, even if he is error prone, a better choice than Bad Jones.

Rodgers is clueless on defensive tactics with Liverpool (which is surprising considering his record with Swanea) and I can't see any of the defensive players he brought in improving any time soon.

For a club with £115mil or so to spend this season it's really not good enough. Excuses about injuries aren't good enough, that is why you bring in sufficient cover to deal with the inevitable injuries throughout the season.

One thing I will say about Rodgers is that he is fantastic at playing an attacking game with the right players, and developing young players. But defensively and with large sums of money he has been very disappointing.

I agree with most of that. It could have been so different if the committee/the owners hadn't pulled out of the Remy deal though.

Can't halp but feel that they should have bought Lacazette, Heung-min Son, Aubameyang, or someone of that ilk.... strikers with pace that fit the profile the team needed

If Cahill and Kompany came in we would concede almost as many as our team doesn't set out to defend as a team. In my opinion as a life long fan is half of the Suarez money should have gone in to a new striker. Turning down Remy aren't was the beginning of all this.

Isn't there some kind of transfer committee at Liverpool? In that it's not just Rodgers who decides? I'd also say that for 25 million or less, the striker you buy will always be something of a gamble - at least Balotelli had proven ability in the Premier League (to a degree anyway!). Rodgers also has Lambert and Borini but for whatever reason hasn't really used them, this is a big error by him imo. I do agree with you though, they really should have spent the money better.

Balotelli isn't the problem. I feel for him. He's a good player but doesn't fit the style of play. He's very good in a 4-4-2 but can't play the lone striker role.

Rodgers inherited a bad defence. We haven't been good enough since Glen Johnson came in and we sold Alonso and let Hyypia leave about 5 years ago!

We missed a couple of tricks in the summer:

        1) We shouldn't have authorised the sale of Suarez without having Sanchez as part of the deal.
        2) We should have spent money on an intelligent, reliable and experienced CB, like Ron Vlaar.
        3) We should have made a decision between Markovic and Can. We spent too much of the Suarez money on "the future".
        4) We didn't get rid of enough of the deadwood.
        5) Alex Song. How we let this one get away I'll never know. All good teams have a player like him. strong and combative. Matic, Yaya, Fellaini (seriously). Generally we don't have enough height and strength in the team.

I think this could be a problem for Rafa to fix...
