Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

As someone with 2 wildcards i'll activate the January one on the 17th. Then the Carling cup semis will be decided you know who misses out the weekend of the CC final. Will then keep original WC until I know who goes deep in the FA Cup which will throw up some double gameweek teams.

Because retrospective punishment can only be dished out when the referee and linesman can conclusively say I did not see that. Because the lino was right next to them and deemed no action to be taken the incident doesn't meet the criteria. Lucky boy though.

Either man city defender or soton for attacking.
If you have Kane then you probably could afford a better 5th mid but beware of rotation. You will leave points on the bench.

I'm not going with a City defender on Jan WC. That is probably when I'll get rid of Zaba. Don't see the keeping too many cleanse.

I'll probably go Terry, Clyne/Bert?Alde (depending on Clyne's price by then), Hutton, Wasilewski and Taylor/Chambers (if he is nailed on again due to injuries by then).

I'm thinking this for the WC
      Chelsea | Saints | (bur, avl/wba, sun)
Panti/Krul or McCarthy if I need funds
Boyd for sure, will need an enabler to have United & City attack

3-5-2 is the way to go.

5 Big hitters in midfield with 1 Aguero / Costa and 2 rotating Fwds.

I found consistency mostly in midfield players.

How worried is everyone by yaya's comments?

seems yaya has a major issue with pelligrini

I can imagine pelligrini will react by dropping him saying 'his head isn't in right frame of mind'.

Now I think I need to play safe and sub out.

    Agree/disagree ??

Disagree. The news originally was that Yaya was rested. Then after the Burnley calamity it changed to a Yaya groin problem. Now Yaya says he's grand. It doesn't necessarily mean anyone is lying, very few players are 100% this time of year but they play through minor issues.

So I'm gonna want Kane & Boyd on my WC on Gw23/24, currently don't own either of them & can't risk their value shooting up too much.

If Jovetic or RvP blank & play poorly, might switch either one for Kane & do Marney to Boyd.
One will be for a hit. Sound reasoning?

Jove to Kane make sense, Marney to Boyd is something for WC 🙂

Boyd is likely to get 2 points on a regular basis two though. I also question his "nailedness" when Vokes comes back from injury.

Ings-Vokes was preferred strike force with Arfield and Kightly supporting. Barnes was signed as backup in winter window as Vokes was struggling with injuries and in Feb, I think he got injured. If Barnes can play on wings, good for him else he will be benched or use to protect Vokes.

Boyd has the biggest goal threat in the game at that price bracket, only maybe JWP can compete if he gets regular starts.

You have to be realistic w/ what Boyd offers, he's a winger competing with DM's & subs at that range.

Boyd is a no-brainer upgrade from Marney

Oh for sure, Marney's highest ceiling is 3 points, with luck.
Boyd can score/assist at will, bench cover is the name of the game 😉

Was in need of good bench cover all these weeks w/ Oscar, Siggy, etc being benched.
Marney always came to the rescue 🙂
