Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Wow, that's a tough decision - probably Costa or Rooney, even though I would hate to bench them 😛

Costa or Rooney. You cannot drop any of that midfield. You just can't.

Yep reason always have cheap Midfielder

Just wanted strong 8 for xmas rotation and this week major problem.

AgreeCosta,RAooney prob best but thot of benching a 11.0m player

might bench Rooney as Costa could hurt me alot more if scores few

1 FT and 2.5m in the bank. RMT please:

    Guzan (Gilks)

    Baines, Chambers, Azpilicueta, Wisdom, Duff

    Sánchez, Silva, Hazard, Eriksen, Boyd

    Rooney, Kane, Austin

So I'm thinking of getting Downing in for Boyd and play a 3-5-2 with Kane on the bench in GW 20. Downing has good fixtures. Good move or should I do something else?

It's a hard think to do not playing a transfer when you have 2 free... I'd look at maybe doubling up on villa for a week. Take dummet out, but beyond that. Moves next week look good. The Kane bandwagon is only a matter of time once Spurs fixtures turn.

I've both but I'd rather Sterling, in fact I'm going to (c) him.... again!

Was unlucky against Swansea, had a lot of chances, a close shot saved from Fabianski and he hit the post later in the game.

Can't see Liverpool v Leicester being one of those games where both teams sit back.... City v Sunderland, I dunno I think Sunderland could make it tough for them

It's a really tough decision. If I buy Sterling, I will be captaining him too. This decision could either go really right or really wrong 😕

Yaya by a mile, not getting all the hype with Sterling on here,he is uber average,Coutinho a much better pick at the moment.Sterling against Swansea was a bit part player for 90% of the game,he did have one shot hit the post and another one saved but you would expect as the lone forward to be much more involved than that, seeing as Liverpool could have scored 7 or 8.

Hopefully rally now second half of the season post my January exams.

Nah I thought he was really good but the guy can't shoot at all.
Even the goal he scored vs Burnley wasn't an overly emphatic finish.

It was Sterling for me . I am considering doing it anyway . I can see Sunderland defending really deep and Leicester are useless .

    Siggy- Hazard- Eriksen- Silva (Boyd)

your strikers don't score enough goals overall... I'd maybe get Austin in for Welbeck this game week, then wait to wild card.

I'd be tempted to keep with that. Welbz could do well with Giroud out. Bony is the only one who could be ripe for the chop, but I think he has something to prove.

    Hart
    Ivan Baines Wisdom
    Haz Sanchez Siggy Downing
    Costa Benteke Austin

A grey arrow is a bit crap. Doesn't give you the satisfaction of a green or the disappointment of a red. Leaves you thinking, if only I got 1 more point I'd have got a green ...

Up against triple Villa defence in the FPL cup this week 😯
    Top 500 finisher last season.

Could do some damage this week as well, I guess.

But then there's a chance Pellegrini will rest Silva after playing in all the games so far - I'm considering Austin captain also

Think i should save my transfer, got £2.1m in bank, 1FT.

I could do Siggy out for Sterling instead, and give myself a benching headache...

    Guzan(Myhill)
    Wisdom NTaylor Zaba (Chambers, OShea)
    Yaya(c) Fabs Sanchez Downing Siggy
    Austin Costa (Sakho)

    a) Save (need transfers to remove Yaya and Sakho)
    b) Siggy out for Sterling
    c) Chambers out for someone...
    d) Something else?
