Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Would you do either Yun -> Hutton or Chambers -> Reid this week or save and then do Yaya to Sterling and Yun -> JT for free next week?

could also get a burnley def, have 4.6 to spend on the Yun replacement, they have some juicy fixtures until wc

Well actually it may be better to wait in that case. Still think the value of Hutton makes him a valuable addition anyway though, tough one.

yeah i know. but it's really only 2 games that you want him for, have no back up keeper and guzan is enough from villa when they play liverpool, arsenal, chelsea me thinks

I'd still think about getting Hutton though with the view he could be a season keeper. Guzan can be changed in wildcard. Dunno though, i wouldn't want to double up on villa defence myself.

Best striker for the next 2 games?

    a) Austin
    b) Barnes
    c) Benteke
    d) Sakho

Leaning towards Austin for safety, but Barnes could be a huge differential

I'm with ya here, torn between Yun to Moreno or Cresswell. I know it's a bit jerky but Moreno could do a reverse John Terry (score two in a row after I buy him instead of selling him - had the tw@t all season till 3 weeks ago!)

    Krul / Foster

    Need some thoughts lads..

    Foster (Myhill)

    Baines Zaba Terry (Hutton, Moore)
Sanchez, Hazard (C), Silva (VC), Downing (Boyd)
    Bony, Costa, Austin

2FT, 0.6 ITB. Hows Foster -> Adrian sound? Three great upcoming fixtures until I plan to WC in GW23. Next week I'll get rid of Bony for Kane and then I'll sort out Moore on my WC.

    Thoughts? Cheers

Good team fella, use 1FT on 2nd keeper or Moore and keep 2FTs for next week after FA Cup game when you might just need them - may allow you to keep your WC until end of Jan

Had kelly since GW 1 if you can bloody believe it. Need to replace him for some bench cover

    Guzan/McCarthy
    Azpilicueta, Dummett, Baines
    Sigurdsson, Sterling, Sánchez, Hazard
    Austin, Benteke, Costa
    (Mahrez, O'Shea, Fonte)

Can i get away with saving the FT? No bench cover, and team seems a bit lacking without City/United attack this week

I'm worried without City cover in my team too, but I'd probably save my FT..

Lack of City is more of a concern. I do expect goals in the United game but then again their performances are a bit all over the shop. Could probably save it.

I haven't got bench cover and I've been getting told all week to make a transfer, you get told to save.

I'm in no position to give advice to you, but may want to deal with O'Shea or Fonte with their fixtures considering Pardew most likely departure, could Dummett's days be numbered? (like the Mahrez pick, doesn't seem to be getting much attention, but his stats are great for the price)

Cheers, appreciate the reply. Will look to move O'shea/Fonte on with the wildcard and a free transfer next week i think. Mahrez too as he departs for the AFCON. Not sure about Dummett, might just keep him as bench fodder.

The key for any transfer being made in the next week is that it HAS to be short term. There is no long term game from now until end of Jan. Personally I have 2FTs that I'm toying with and they are totally focussed on NYD fixtures (and maybe the next). The fact is we will ALL play a WC in the next 2-3 GWs, it's a given... Think short-term, the future is tomorrow's problem 🙂

i've posted these type odds a few times now and every time someone whinges about the decimal thing which is really annoying. you can figure it out fairly easily if you want, or just look up the same thing yourself

Basically 13/10 ... the right hand number is what you place on it and the left hand number is your returns (along with your stake)

13/10 for example... I bet 10 pound so I get 13 back (along with my 10 pound stake meaning I get 23 in total)

          7/2 ... for every 2 quid you'll get 7 back

          And so on...

The closer the numbers to each other the higher the likelihood of it happening.

A low fraction, i.e. 1/4, 1/10, 1/100 means its is more likely to happen.

A higher fraction, i.e. 6/4, 6/1, 100/1 means it is less likely to happen.

Yeah that makes total sense now, thanks mate.

Slowly converting my brain from looking at odds in monetary value (e.g. $2.10) to fractions haha

13/10 doesn't mean £10 bet gets £23 (£13 profit) does it? It means you win only £3 and ur £10 back
