The post festive schedule hangover proved hard to shrug off this week, particularly among those who benched one of the undisputed star of Gameweek, 20 Harry Kane. Our community articles, members tables and hot topics over the past week offer key advice on dealing with the festive fall out as well as tackling the Fantasy Premier League January wildcard. We look back on the last seven days, whilst discovering just how crucial benching or playing Kane was to the standings in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

The New Year ensures that Fantasy Premier League managers are gripped by Wildcard fever, as we eagerly plan how to dust off the festive blues and create the perfect squad to take on the second half of the season. Following on from Saata’s analysis of budget goalkeeper rotation, Triggerlips was on hand to provided his own quick start guide to Wildcarding, outlining the pitfalls to watch out for when contemplating the January surgery.

With the Wildcard likely to dominate community activity throughout the month, we’ll be starting a new series of articles from next week. The Rate My Wildcard Team (RMWCT) community articles will feature the thoughts of one of our contributors on their own wildcard plans, helping to kickstart the discussion and offer the community a chance to submit their own RMWCT.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

Each month we offer a £25 Amazon voucher to your favourite community article. The vote for December’s best article launched this week and closes on Tuesday January 6. Please do show your appreciation for our writers and take some time to look through last month’s articles and vote here.

The Hottest Topics

Harry Kane is inevitably going to find his way into thousands of squads in January. His 18 points in Gameweek 20 against Chelsea was arguably the most surprising story of the festive schedule list, judging by the number of Fantasy managers who benched the Tottenham striker. Granville posted shortly after the final kick of Gameweek 20 to reveal he was one of the devastated unfortunates, setting up an impromptu discussion to support those who shared his pain.

Inspired by those events, we started this discussion on the lessons learned from the festive schedule, including reference to the dangers of benching players like Kane and having too many options over Christmas period, anticipating rotation that never really arrived.

With winter Wildcards active, Kane has already seen an unprecedented rise in ownership, with 146,000 drafting him in within 12 hours of his Gameweek 20 heroics. A 0.3 price rise is almost a certainty before Gameweek 21, but O’Shaunessy offered a note of caution. According to his analysis Kane is lagging behind other strikers when it comes to shots in the box, indicating that he may find it tougher in coming weeks to notch up high returns.

Eden Hazard was another hero of the festive schedule who, according to KTK Interiesta, has now well and truly scotched the theory he is ineffective away from Stamford Bridge. Hazard’s 24-points across his last three away games certainly back up his argument. With solid home form as well, it was no surprise to see Hazard mentioned in Black Knights discussion on early captaincy thoughts for Gameweek 21.

The community aren’t feeling quite so enthusiastic about Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool midfielder had mixed fortunes over Christman, despite being fielded as a striker. Despite having a continued run of favourable fixtures, Bull was among those wondering whether Sterling is worth drafting in after poor returns across his last two Premier League outings.

While Sterling failed to deliver on expectations, he was unlikely to feature in Saniul’s discussion that prompted the community to name their worst single transfer move of the season so far. Kickit probably claimed the prize for the most disastrous decision, transferring out both Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle ahead of their epic Gameweek 8 hauls: hari-kari stuff.

Finally, with news of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Liverpool and his impending move to a Major League Soccer franchise, Henzrd prompted the community to take a step back from Fantasy Football and consider the growth of the beautiful game in the US. This discussion led to some fascinating analysis of the commercials involved, with Mata-Is-The-Juan and RVP is Essential providing some great insight on how the MLS operates.

The Members Tables

Rdowy08’s latest table focuses on form midfielders. Based on their last four appearances this table has a number of minimum criteria to ensure only the best options are included.

My assist imminent table also focuses on midfielders, this time those who have been racking up a high number of chances that hopefully will be converted into points in the coming Gameweeks.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

The Harry Kane factor proved decisive in our community leagues during Gameweek 20. Greenwindmill was one of those who owned and started the Tottenham striker and takes a commanding 27-point lead in the FFScout moderators and contributors league as a result. Ciaran Lamont, the new leader of the Puffinboy Memorial Cup was another to ensure Kane was in his starting XI, as did Dan Clark, who retains top spot in the FFS Dead Zone league.

Sarnab Das may have benched Kane, but his tally of 47 in Gameweek 20 was still enough to maintain his lead in the “Long and Winding Road” main league.

    Pantilimon | Elliot
    Baines | Clichy | Taylor | Hutton | Wisdom

I'd rather trade Austin in than Clichy. You have a pretty decent defense for this week and the next couple by my eye. More points potential to replace those two forwards in my view. Start Clichy Hutton and Wisdom this gameweek should be fine.

Yeah but he's just out of form and not the best fixtures for me. Can't see him bagging lots of points over the next 1-3 gameweeks until you play the wildcard. I wish I could get rid of him but other things to do more pressing.

No Mahrez and Schlupp will be difficult for them to cope. All their pace is gone from their attack without them except for Vardy. I think there is virtually a zero percent chance of Everton keeping a clean....so I'd bench Baines.

villa at home i might agree but away a clean sheet still not that likely. Baines will concede but he may also score, if id stuck with him thruogh this barren spell id be v peed off benching him if he gets attacking points

Villa arguably better defensively on the road as they don't have to worry about trying to keep possession in front of home fans and play attacking football which they are incapable of doing. They can play their brand of counterattacking defensive football away from home and not have to worry. Four of their seven clean sheets this season have come on the road.

Who should I get in for Yaya?

    A) Fab
    B) ADM
    C) Walcott

    E) Chadli

    Thinking Fab atm.

A or B. I'd go B but only just. Fab doesn't excite me too much from a having fun standpoint in FPL....but if Oscar is dropped and he gets pushed up in the hole that would be a different proposition altogether.

    your pick and your reasoning

    A) 352
    B) 343
    C) 352/343 rotation

I'm personally of the B mindset at the moment but with a value option like Kane available I feel like one really should go the C route..

      B

There's no way I'd bench Kane but at the same time I don't have enough faith to play him as part of a 2 man strike force every week. Going to have a massive defence.

Well, rotating Austin and Siggy for the last few months has been brilliant. I'm sure a similar duo (eg Siggy/Bojan) will present itself soon.

    6. Zasa

In an ideal world I'd do C, but sadly can't shoe horn in all the premiums I'd want on my side.

Though if I was to get Kane, I'd make sure I had someone to rotate him with that can cover his not so great Gw24,25 & 29 fixtures (ARS,liv, mun). For some reason, I just wouldn't feel comfortable playing Kane each GW 'til the end of the season.

He's still a young lad, playing for a team (realistically) outside of the top4, I'm preparing my team for inconsistency on his part. Which granted is to be "expected" from a 5.0m striker, but it is what is its. Still risky for me building my team around him at his current price since there's virtually no good sub-5.0m strikers I'd replace him with if he he drops into a serious drought or burns out.

I'd make sure I had some good money ITB is I was to play him every GW

Rotatable player with Kane? Probably Siggy who can cover his fixtures Gw24 & 25 with (SUN,wba), but who then in turn had (MUN, bur, tot, LIV), not the best fixtures tbh

Arsenal - We already saw what he can do in a London derby and Chelsea's defense is better than Arsenal's

Liverpool - well they are just Liverpool and always capable of capitulating

United - our defense is only recently getting better so this could definitely be a tough fixture, but we're also known to make stupid mistakes

but yeah, may be worth looking into a rotation with him

if kane was 8 to 9 million youd never bench him, im happy to play him every week till his form dips at least, regardless of fixture

          • 11 Years

We also have to be a bit realistic in regards to Kane, he's very young & lacks experience.
Inconsistency is what we should expect from him, & I'm almost certain he won't keep up his goal rate. 2 shots vs Chelsea! 2 shots! He's not the end all be all 3rd striker, don't wash your hands with the guys just yet. I'd prepare my side with money in the bank in any case.

In reply to Sinik, let's get realistic with those teams mate. Sure those fixtures aren't are daunting as they once were, but I'm almost certain all three of those defenses will tidy up the second half of the season. This season in particular has been ironic for those 3 sides in that the majority of their goals conceded have been from pure lackadaisical errors.

They'll learn from their first half mistakes. Can't see Kane, let alone Spurs walking over them later on. 2 shots from Kane & 5 goals vs Chelsea is an anomaly, this won't happen again mate IMO

Palace are worth watching over the next couple of GWs. Dann or Ward if not the keeper.

Dann certainly the pick of the Palace defense given him being the main man on set pieces and no one else really offering any attacking intent whatsoever. 4.9 is a little bit steep for me though. Cameron does have my attention at 4.2, though. Very good cheap rotational option I think. Still slightly concerned about where he fits in to the squad when they are fully fit. His versatility though probably ensures he stays on the pitch somewhere.

        Yep exactly my thoughts.

A real shame Dann isn't just 4.5 (might make him a WC proposition)

I agree. 4.9 just stretching it too far, probably not worth it.

Have Cameron in mine, he'd be my last choice though. Have Terry, Bertrand and Hutton and Wisdom rotating. Could be a useful back up though with Stoke's upcoming fixtures.

I think one of them is definitely about to go on a tear..just a matter of determining if pens and corners are worth the price difference (and remains to be seen if Di Maria will take corners back)

Nope, still getting the big chances in the box, unlucky not to convert these past GW's.
Plus, he has Burnley at home. If both Shak & Marney aren't fit for the game, I might even captain him 😯 😉
