The post festive schedule hangover proved hard to shrug off this week, particularly among those who benched one of the undisputed star of Gameweek, 20 Harry Kane. Our community articles, members tables and hot topics over the past week offer key advice on dealing with the festive fall out as well as tackling the Fantasy Premier League January wildcard. We look back on the last seven days, whilst discovering just how crucial benching or playing Kane was to the standings in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

The New Year ensures that Fantasy Premier League managers are gripped by Wildcard fever, as we eagerly plan how to dust off the festive blues and create the perfect squad to take on the second half of the season. Following on from Saata’s analysis of budget goalkeeper rotation, Triggerlips was on hand to provided his own quick start guide to Wildcarding, outlining the pitfalls to watch out for when contemplating the January surgery.

With the Wildcard likely to dominate community activity throughout the month, we’ll be starting a new series of articles from next week. The Rate My Wildcard Team (RMWCT) community articles will feature the thoughts of one of our contributors on their own wildcard plans, helping to kickstart the discussion and offer the community a chance to submit their own RMWCT.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

Each month we offer a £25 Amazon voucher to your favourite community article. The vote for December’s best article launched this week and closes on Tuesday January 6. Please do show your appreciation for our writers and take some time to look through last month’s articles and vote here.

The Hottest Topics

Harry Kane is inevitably going to find his way into thousands of squads in January. His 18 points in Gameweek 20 against Chelsea was arguably the most surprising story of the festive schedule list, judging by the number of Fantasy managers who benched the Tottenham striker. Granville posted shortly after the final kick of Gameweek 20 to reveal he was one of the devastated unfortunates, setting up an impromptu discussion to support those who shared his pain.

Inspired by those events, we started this discussion on the lessons learned from the festive schedule, including reference to the dangers of benching players like Kane and having too many options over Christmas period, anticipating rotation that never really arrived.

With winter Wildcards active, Kane has already seen an unprecedented rise in ownership, with 146,000 drafting him in within 12 hours of his Gameweek 20 heroics. A 0.3 price rise is almost a certainty before Gameweek 21, but O’Shaunessy offered a note of caution. According to his analysis Kane is lagging behind other strikers when it comes to shots in the box, indicating that he may find it tougher in coming weeks to notch up high returns.

Eden Hazard was another hero of the festive schedule who, according to KTK Interiesta, has now well and truly scotched the theory he is ineffective away from Stamford Bridge. Hazard’s 24-points across his last three away games certainly back up his argument. With solid home form as well, it was no surprise to see Hazard mentioned in Black Knights discussion on early captaincy thoughts for Gameweek 21.

The community aren’t feeling quite so enthusiastic about Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool midfielder had mixed fortunes over Christman, despite being fielded as a striker. Despite having a continued run of favourable fixtures, Bull was among those wondering whether Sterling is worth drafting in after poor returns across his last two Premier League outings.

While Sterling failed to deliver on expectations, he was unlikely to feature in Saniul’s discussion that prompted the community to name their worst single transfer move of the season so far. Kickit probably claimed the prize for the most disastrous decision, transferring out both Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle ahead of their epic Gameweek 8 hauls: hari-kari stuff.

Finally, with news of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Liverpool and his impending move to a Major League Soccer franchise, Henzrd prompted the community to take a step back from Fantasy Football and consider the growth of the beautiful game in the US. This discussion led to some fascinating analysis of the commercials involved, with Mata-Is-The-Juan and RVP is Essential providing some great insight on how the MLS operates.

The Members Tables

Rdowy08’s latest table focuses on form midfielders. Based on their last four appearances this table has a number of minimum criteria to ensure only the best options are included.

My assist imminent table also focuses on midfielders, this time those who have been racking up a high number of chances that hopefully will be converted into points in the coming Gameweeks.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

The Harry Kane factor proved decisive in our community leagues during Gameweek 20. Greenwindmill was one of those who owned and started the Tottenham striker and takes a commanding 27-point lead in the FFScout moderators and contributors league as a result. Ciaran Lamont, the new leader of the Puffinboy Memorial Cup was another to ensure Kane was in his starting XI, as did Dan Clark, who retains top spot in the FFS Dead Zone league.

Sarnab Das may have benched Kane, but his tally of 47 in Gameweek 20 was still enough to maintain his lead in the “Long and Winding Road” main league.

I'm once again flirting with the idea of bringing in Milner. Did it once after the 4-1 thumping of Spurs, then thought about it with Aguero out injured, now thinking about it again since Yaya's gone to ACoN. He never lives up to my expectations though.

Don't even think about it mate, Dzeko's back next GW apparently & Aguero will be back soon.
Milner will go back to his usual work horse role & become obsolete again.

      Would stay away imo

    Pre wc team.

    Guzan, Krul
Baines, Montero, O shea, Hutton, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Chadli, Ameobi,
    Kane, Costa, Austin

Austin hasn't found the net in three so think he's the weakest link.
7.7m in bank so tempted to go for RVP as potentially explosive differential until I play wc later in month.
    Reasonable plan?

Sounds reasonable to me. RVP not really showing much form though. I'd maybe look at Giroud instead or Ings....or even 70 minute man Falcao.

          Lescott or Trippier.

  6. Jay_

I think I've finally cracked it on my WC

    Heaton Panti
    Terry Bertrand Tripper PvA Hutton
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas ADM Siggy
    Ings Kane RVP

    0.1 itb

Sunderland Burnley goalkeeper and defender double up rotation looks like it could work wonders for quite a while

Midfield speaks for itself , Siggy will be benched for 2 weeks and play when Ings is away , this coincides with Siggy fixtures getting better

Ings has 2 plum home fixtures , Kane is Kane and RVP is Ageuro placeholder

    Just leaves the questions

    A: keep as it is

B : Clyne instead of Bertrand

C: Rooney or Falcao instead of RVP but save funds for Kun

    1. Walsh

Going without Pulis defender(s) is madness to me. Foster over Heaton seems like the most obvious thing to do. Overall it looks very tidy though, mate. Not sure if it's worth having Siggy as a fifth mid, maybe something to contemplate. I prefer Bertrand to Clyne. C is a tough one between RVP and Falcao for me.

      1. Jay_
        11 years, 7 months ago

If RVP drops before deadline day I can afford Hutton to Wisdom which I think he could very well drop , if not I will do that with Foster , thanks for suggestion , if I do that I could downgrade Siggy to Boyd ( had 3 BUR spots ! Lol ) and bank the cash , thanks for feedback Walsh appreciate it mate

I'd be happy with that for this week. RvP is only worry but he did really well at St Marys

Yep, the order is Fonte, Alde, bertrand and then Clyne.

Take away their goals, assists and clean sheets from their total BPS score, and divide it by the minutes they have played.

Thoughts on these moves guys (pre-Gw24 WC)?
    (2FT's, 0.8m ITB)

    Baines ---> Alder
    Marney ---> AdM
    Jovetic(after Everton game) ---> Kane (-4)

    Would give me this:
    Panti
    JT | Alder | Duff
    Hazard | Alexis | AdM | Sterling
    RvP | Austin | Kane

    | Fabi, Siggy, Wisdom, Dummett |

Don't like the hit and wouldn't want to ditch Baines in front of WBA, cry at all. I'd rather just do RVP and Marney out for AdM and whichever striker is flavor of the day.

Interesting, I just don't fancy Jovetic's chances of starting the full 90 when both Dzeko & Aguero are due back on the 10th & 18th respectively.

Keep in mind Walsh, all the three of these players will be getting the boot on my WC, & all three of the players I want, I need to get now (or soon) or be priced out of those moves (My TV has been going down drastically)

Good points on Baines though, might punish me hard going w/o 'til the WC, cheers Walsh 😉

Btw, did you take a look at the newly revised 3-way rotation scheme? It doesn't have a Burnley defender btw 😉

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 7 months ago

Haha I did not catch that - but I am also not in the mind of seeking such a rotation. I will not be going with two start every week defenders in my WC. Nor will I be going in with one start every week defender either, so I fear it will not be of much use to me.

Dzeko and Aguero notoriously slow to be re-integrated into the team after layoffs though. I would rather just roll with Jovetic who I think will get plenty of gametime over the next three fixtures. He can always start alongside Kun or Dzeko as well - has done earlier in the season. Not a transfer I'd be looking to make if I owned him.

Toby will not go up in price. AdM will do, depending on his performances, between .2-.4 I would guess over the next three gameweeks. Kane probably can't go too much higher given the insane amounts of transfers in he has already had. But if you are really in need of jumping on the value to get the team you want in the WC then I can't fault the moves, mate.

          1. Zasa
            • 12 Years

I see 🙁 Good option too mate, can't fault other defensive strategies

That's a good point Walsh, never thought of that. Could be a great option sticking by Jov & opting for AdM instead of RvP for the last premium spot. Does seems like luxury move also.

AdM & Kane are what haunt my WC "dream-team", their value is at it's peak in what I could afford with my measly budget. Though it might take me another GW for Kane to win my pledge.

Cheers for the insight Walsh 🙂
btw, you dish out so much good advice, yet never seem to receive it on the other end. Don't fancy a cheeky RMT? I feel I need to reciprocate w/ so all the advice you given me 😉

Cheers mate. Yeah honestly all the questions I have about my own side or what to do moving forward almost always get answered from reading other comments and other discussion threads. I very rarely feel the need to ask for advice as the same questions that I may have on that given week have already been asked at least a dozen times. But thanks anyway bud 🙂

Something feels cheap asking others to sway their opinions.

Anyone watch the Yeovil match last night? I know ADM scored against a team bottom of league one but I've already got Haz, Sanchez and Silva and the only replacement for Yaya I truly like is Fab but already have 3 Chelsea, leaving ADM as my only option to avoid a price drop.

Guess it depends if you're WCing or not, seems many here have disregarded him since they already have Kane in their sides & don't fancy the double-up.

(cry, SUN, wba) then after Gw24 their fixtures take an immediate turn for the worst, right when Siggy has good ones. In any case, he's definitely a great option, Eriksen's form dips massively when Chadli's on the pitch.

      Ideally I would rotate Siggy & Chadli/Kane between now & Gw28

pick 2 please - Austin, Ings, berahino, Kane

Also is it viable to drop costa and have 3 of those strikers and double up on fabregas and hazard in midfield?

Ings and Kane. Yes I guess you can argue that is viable but I don't think I'd be too comfortable going forward with three budget strikers.

i have ings and Kane atm so that was my initial thought, then berahino went and scored 4 in the cup and now im not so sure.

yeh i wanna keep costa, but i also want JT in my backline..

whos going to get me more points though, JT/ hazard or hazard/fabregas?

then im stuck with who do i put into the back 4 instead of JT.

Meh. I would just do it. Both could easily start this gameweek. Can't see it going too pear shaped...and if you have a solid enough defense and a good fifth mid you will be fine. Worst case they both get one point cameos but I'd just go with them now and enjoy not having planned transfers on the cards straight from the off.
