Alexis Sanchez grabs two goals and an assist as Arsenal stroll past Stoke at the Emirates. Laurent Koscielny also finds the net as the Gunners earn a first clean sheet in seven. Dusan Tadic climbs off the bench to fire the winner as Southampton earn a tenth shut-out of the season and Man United meekly surrender their ten-match unbeaten run.

Sanchez Inspires Gunners to Victory

The summer signing from Barcelona soared to the summit of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with another stunning display as Arsenal swept aside Stoke at the Emirates. With two goals and an assist in the 3-0 stroll, Sanchez played a part in all three of his side’s goals to serve a reminder of his importance to the Gunners, at a time when the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are all arriving on our radars ahead of a very kind upcoming schedule. Once next week’s trip to the Etihad is out of the way, Arsene Wenger’s side have seven excellent fixtures in the following eight (AVL, LEI, cpl, EVE, qpr, WHM, new), which are bound to play a significant part in how our winter Wildcards are restructured. Despite Giroud’s return forcing him onto the flank, Sanchez’ sublime form suggests more of the same looks likely as he shows little sign of slowing down in his first season in the top flight.

Defensive Concerns for Wenger

A first clean sheet in seven attempts may well bring the Gunners defence into contention ahead of those aforementioned fixtures. Laurent Koscielny’s early opener – his second league goal in 11 league appearances – served notice of his threat in the opposition area, though elsewhere at the back, the north London club were without Kieran Gibbs and Calum Chambers due to an ankle problem and illness respectively. With Mathieu Debuchy now set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a dislocated shoulder, Chambers could be set for a first-team reprieve at right-back, and at 5.0, would certainly be the cheapest of Wenger’s regulars if Debuchy is out for a lengthy period, though Hector Bellerin (4.4) could also come into contention. David Ospina was handed his first league start between the sticks against the Potters, though, and at a cost of 4.8, is certainly one to consider if he can stay ahead of Wojciech Szczesny in the keeper pecking order.

Tadic Stuns United

With Sadio Mane injured, the Serbian was a surprise substitute as Ronald Koeman opted for James Ward-Prowse and new loan signing Eljero Elia on either side of Graziano Pelle. Replacing Elia just after the hour mark, Tadic needed just six minutes to grab the winner and has now scored in back-to-back league outings to take his tally to three for the season. Whilst yesterday’s strike bodes well for his chances of returning to the first XI, the jury remains out on Tadic – bearing in mind he had chalked up two assists in his previous nine, few will be tempted just yet.

Another Clean Sheet for the Saints

A 1-0 win at Old Trafford afforded the St Mary’s side their tenth shut-out of the campaign yesterday. Over the course of the last five, Koeman’s men have kept out Everton, Arsenal and United and conceded just once to Chelsea to force a way back into our winter Wildcard plans. Given that Graziano Pelle has scored just twice since Gameweek 8, it’s likely that the main focal point will be firmly on defence, and with showdowns against only two of the top six in the next 12 Gameweeks, renewed interest in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand looks imminent. Toby Alderweireld’s withdrawal due to a thigh injury is worth monitoring, though – if the Belgian is sidelined for any length of time, Florin Gardos, at 4.8, looks set to benefit whilst Maya Yoshida is off on international duties with Japan in the Asia Cup.

Sluggish United Fail to Impress

Louis van Gaal’s side welcomed Southampton to Old Trafford on the back of a ten-match unbeaten run – the last time they had tasted defeat was in early November away to Man City. With the treatment room emptying, the United manager almost had too many options at his disposal and dropped Radamel Falcao from the squad altogether as Angel Di Maria partnered Robin van Persie up front. Wayne Rooney started in central midfield again but was moved up front after the Dutchman was forced off with an ankle problem but the hosts failed to register a single shot on target all match. With promoted trio QPR, Leicester and Burnley in the next four, the fixtures smile kindly on the Red Devils but yesterday’s showing did little to convince they can deliver.

Very real possibility Gw22 Aguero will be a season changer. Similar to Suarez after his suspension last year, or Aguero vs. Spurs this year.

Arsenal are not the strongest side defensively - fixture last year ended 6-3 to city if I remember correctly.

There's a big chance that those who miss out on getting Aguero this week could miss out on a lot of points and price rises - not too many will buy before Chelsea next week, so most transfer movement will happen now or after the Chelsea match. Could Gw24 be too late?

      I'm looking at either

      A. Courtois - P.Jones - Fonte

      or

      B. Foster - Cahill - Bertrand

B seems most popular on here - but given the fixtures - think United defence could be worth going for (I already have Baird for Brom).

Mourinho considers that Chelsea have 2 of the 3 best GKs in the world. He has said that Cech will play games and that it isn't a case of Courtois for the PL and Cech for Cups, he'll mix it up. And a number of Chelsea regulars think Cech is still the best GK at the club.

Make of that what you will but I wouldn't expect Courtois to necessarily start every PL game.

I'm not expecting ANYONE to start every game...but seen as Courtois had a knock the other day, he's played every game bar one. Think it's safe to say he's 1st choice no?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years

Yes, he's 1st choice but won't play every game. You might get lucky and he always starts in the PL. You might get unlucky.

As for starting every PL game, JT is the only Chelsea defender you can count on for that unless injured or carrying a knock (barring an unlikely loss of form). Mourinho will play him until the title is settled unless there's a very good reason not to.

Defenders are more expensive but you'll get many more points from them when there's a clean sheet as they get bonus and certain ones have goal threat

Currently on 8 red arrows in a row, fallen from 2k to 19k in that time. My overall team scores quite well and is only a couple of points off the top 10k average most weeks its just my captain fails to get any points most weeks. Doesn't matter who I choose, Hazard, Austin, Bony, etc they always blank.

So I am just asking the better players of FPL than me, what is the most foolproof plan to pick a good captain? Sounds like a stupid question or is it just luck when it comes to captains. Shall I just leave the captaincy on Aguero or Sanchez from now on? It's not like I am captaining Adam Johnson every week, my choices have been sound in hindsight.

This season has really highlighted how important captain choices are. I can have 6 of my front 7 scoring attacking points but my captain fails to deliver and it is still a red arrow.. Going to captain Kane this coming week, good idea?

Pretty much same deal as me, though my drop hasn't been that dramatic. Picking Hazard over Sanchez this week is a good example, there's no wrong choice there, just not getting the right draw. I'm going Kun (c) personally just for the hell of it, but Kane is the obvious choice it seems.

Also the 0.7 is worth it for bonus and attacking threat.

There are better keepers who are considerably cheaper. Really not a good move imo.

    How's this WC team looking:

    Fabianski (Hamer)
    Moreno - Gardos - Dummett - (PVA) - (Wisdom)
    Hazard - Sanchez - Fabregas - Sig - (Boyd)
    Aguero - Costa - Kane (c)

Feel my defence is too weak but i have 0 ITB and limited options...

    For 3rd def & 5th mid, who'd you prefer?
    A) Berty & Marney
    B) Fonte & Boyd

    can't afford Berty & Boyd

Best midfielder at or under the 8.5 range? I just don't see how I can afford an ADM or Silva type while holding both Kun or Costa

drop costa for kane/austin/ings and get whoever you want and a load of extra money? Otherwise all the value in midfield below the heavy hitters seems to be in Siggy/Downing/Chadli. Oh, maybe eriksen though.

Madness to get top scoring forward, Austin out for:

    Kun, Costa, Kane?

His home fixtures for the rest of the season are as bad as they come

Austin's and QPR's performance at home is so much better than away largely because they have met a lot of the weaker teams at home in the first half of the season IMO. This could very well mean that they will perform better away than home in the second half of the season.

I'm also between Costa - Trippier (or similar) and Austin - Terry in my WC drafts. The latter one also leaves quite a bit of cash to upgrade a mid though, so I'm still very much in doubt.

anyone considering Krulliot again now one is back and other is almost returning 😀

i quite liked the idea of not overthinking it with keepers. Rest of the team is head ache enough

Not very high, no ... But Cadli + Sterling over AdM + Haz in midfield, and Gardos(->Alderweireld later) over Bertrand/Clyne could save you

He's only ever scored more than 4 goals in a season once which partially suggests people are looking into him for his clean sheets. Makes me tempted to double up on Southampton defence if that's the case (both Clyne/Berty have as much attacking threat anyway)
