Alexis Sanchez grabs two goals and an assist as Arsenal stroll past Stoke at the Emirates. Laurent Koscielny also finds the net as the Gunners earn a first clean sheet in seven. Dusan Tadic climbs off the bench to fire the winner as Southampton earn a tenth shut-out of the season and Man United meekly surrender their ten-match unbeaten run.

Sanchez Inspires Gunners to Victory

The summer signing from Barcelona soared to the summit of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings with another stunning display as Arsenal swept aside Stoke at the Emirates. With two goals and an assist in the 3-0 stroll, Sanchez played a part in all three of his side’s goals to serve a reminder of his importance to the Gunners, at a time when the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are all arriving on our radars ahead of a very kind upcoming schedule. Once next week’s trip to the Etihad is out of the way, Arsene Wenger’s side have seven excellent fixtures in the following eight (AVL, LEI, cpl, EVE, qpr, WHM, new), which are bound to play a significant part in how our winter Wildcards are restructured. Despite Giroud’s return forcing him onto the flank, Sanchez’ sublime form suggests more of the same looks likely as he shows little sign of slowing down in his first season in the top flight.

Defensive Concerns for Wenger

A first clean sheet in seven attempts may well bring the Gunners defence into contention ahead of those aforementioned fixtures. Laurent Koscielny’s early opener – his second league goal in 11 league appearances – served notice of his threat in the opposition area, though elsewhere at the back, the north London club were without Kieran Gibbs and Calum Chambers due to an ankle problem and illness respectively. With Mathieu Debuchy now set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a dislocated shoulder, Chambers could be set for a first-team reprieve at right-back, and at 5.0, would certainly be the cheapest of Wenger’s regulars if Debuchy is out for a lengthy period, though Hector Bellerin (4.4) could also come into contention. David Ospina was handed his first league start between the sticks against the Potters, though, and at a cost of 4.8, is certainly one to consider if he can stay ahead of Wojciech Szczesny in the keeper pecking order.

Tadic Stuns United

With Sadio Mane injured, the Serbian was a surprise substitute as Ronald Koeman opted for James Ward-Prowse and new loan signing Eljero Elia on either side of Graziano Pelle. Replacing Elia just after the hour mark, Tadic needed just six minutes to grab the winner and has now scored in back-to-back league outings to take his tally to three for the season. Whilst yesterday’s strike bodes well for his chances of returning to the first XI, the jury remains out on Tadic – bearing in mind he had chalked up two assists in his previous nine, few will be tempted just yet.

Another Clean Sheet for the Saints

A 1-0 win at Old Trafford afforded the St Mary’s side their tenth shut-out of the campaign yesterday. Over the course of the last five, Koeman’s men have kept out Everton, Arsenal and United and conceded just once to Chelsea to force a way back into our winter Wildcard plans. Given that Graziano Pelle has scored just twice since Gameweek 8, it’s likely that the main focal point will be firmly on defence, and with showdowns against only two of the top six in the next 12 Gameweeks, renewed interest in the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand looks imminent. Toby Alderweireld’s withdrawal due to a thigh injury is worth monitoring, though – if the Belgian is sidelined for any length of time, Florin Gardos, at 4.8, looks set to benefit whilst Maya Yoshida is off on international duties with Japan in the Asia Cup.

Sluggish United Fail to Impress

Louis van Gaal’s side welcomed Southampton to Old Trafford on the back of a ten-match unbeaten run – the last time they had tasted defeat was in early November away to Man City. With the treatment room emptying, the United manager almost had too many options at his disposal and dropped Radamel Falcao from the squad altogether as Angel Di Maria partnered Robin van Persie up front. Wayne Rooney started in central midfield again but was moved up front after the Dutchman was forced off with an ankle problem but the hosts failed to register a single shot on target all match. With promoted trio QPR, Leicester and Burnley in the next four, the fixtures smile kindly on the Red Devils but yesterday’s showing did little to convince they can deliver.

    Considering having both Aguero and Kane;

    a) Chadli

    c) else under 9.1 apart Downing

For me, probably b. Mainly because Costa seems to score nearly every game. Yaya and ADM will be similar, maybe Yaya more consistent and ADM more sporadic but explosive and both Bertrand and Ivan offer similar returns.

I have B in my current WC but Arsenal's fixtures are very nice after Spurs away so would seriously consider moving to A.

What bugs me is Costa's well documented inability to attract bonus points.

The overall difference will probably be negligible but every point counts!

ADM is purely based on fixtures and his form when he first arrived.

Kane & Aguero are other strikers at mo.

Very tempted by this for WC defence:

    Foster, Pantilimon
    Terry, Clyne, Lescott, Widsom, Wasilewski

West Brom's tough fixtures are comfortably covered by Chelsea, Southampton and Leicteser having easier fixtures.

For Southampton's fixture away to Chelsea, I can double up on Wisdom and Lescott.

    What do you think?

For me A, but try and find room for Terry somehow.

I can see Austin's returns dropping off in the second half. Sides are wiser to his threat and as he's the only player doing anything is easier to take out of the game.

I could get Costa and Terry if I downgrade to a non-playing GK, go Wasilewski over Hutton, and Ameobi over Boyd. Could work, but that leaves me with 0.1 ITB, before price increases this week...

How about Austin, Hazard and Trippier (to free funds for Hazard?) - I believe he'll come good with a few more assists - he's got corners in his locker, Burnley has a run of three good fixtures in which he should come away with at least one clean sheet. If you're going to pay for Terry I'd always pay for Ivanovic instead.

For me it would be Costa, Chadli + someone else.

Whilst Burnley have improved Trippier is risky compared to other players at that price.

Austin has done fantastically but I predict he will drop off now (Tough fixtures), hence not B

i'd back him to come good in the next few games - i was pleased with his willingness to run behind the defences, something that LVG will not be changing. once he gets sharper and his teammates more in sync with his runs, he'll get in among the goals - for sure! nevermind his positioning, his movement was all that matters and he was among the most fluid in the united team.

i've written about him and a few others in my own fantasy review, and will continue to keep track of his performances over the next few weeks (i watch all the 'big' games every week): http://chubbyalonso.com/2015/01/12/kicking-the-blues-everything-you-need-to-know-from-the-weekend-starring-european-capital-cities/

    Austin, Kane (C), Pelle

bench - Pantilimon, Fabregas, Cameron, Hutton

Decent semi-punt on Kane as captain. I thought about it but Sunderland's unpredictability made me wimp out.

On recent form I'd maybe consider Fab for Pelle rather than Austin. But definitely fab over one of those two.

i might disagree - i think Pelle against a less-than-flattering Newcastle defence has a better chance than Austin against United - Louis van Gaal's team never look too shaky and despite QPR's good home form I think United may be too much for Harry's rudimentary tactics.

Want to keep Siggy but will bench him next two so v Boyd, thought Downing would be better?

        Thoughts on Colback? Airfield?

Obviously not all of them are high PPG. Keane a cheap punt, will switch to Chester in a few.

No Kane? Would prefer him to Costa.

Main goalscorer in team, compared to Costa sharing with Haz, Fab, Oscar.
      Much much cheaper.
Just as much a captain option as Costa.
      On form.

Chadli just as likely to get the goals as Kane imo

Costa looked really sharp so want to keep him for a couple more. Then either him or Austin to Kane.

Drop Costa to Kane; use funds to upgrade defence & Downing.

Thoughts lads. Pretty set on this!

    Foster - Myhill
    Cahill - Gardos/Toby - Naylor (Wisdom - PVA)
    Sanchez - Hazard - Sterling - Chadli/Siggy (JWP)
    Kun - Costa - Kane

Anything anyone would change? Thoughts greatly appreciated 🙂

Clyne/Bert worth the money over Gardos personally, if you can squeeze them in.

I stubbornly have ignored him the whole season, I hope the return of ozil and wally will curb his points

they will probably improve them. Just get him in it's better late than never. He gets better every week as are Arsenal as a whole. Played great attacking football this weekend.

Downing will have a good game vs Liverpool in a few weeks, and most will have sold him on their wildcards.
