Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

I would choose Aguero but Vs Arsenal and may not start is abit of a gamble. ADM Vs QPR I think could be a good punt. Kane should do something in his match even if it's just an assist.

    Panti
    Clyne - Clichy - Cameron
    Sanchez - Hazard - ADM - Sterling
    Aguero - Giroud - Kane

Few punts with Clichy, Sterling and Giroud but have reasons behind them.

Could easily do Clichy/Sterling --> Terry/Tadic if people think that's a better idea but kinda like being a bit different

Today could be Aguero's second rise. As he gets close to 90%, people will start panicking and bringing him in to make sure they catch the rise, making it more likely to happen.

    1. Pompel

Doubt it - WC's don not count, so price sites like fpl statistics are inaccurate

      1. Black Knights
        • 14 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Even ignoring WCs (which FPL stats has done), he's gone from 0% on Monday to 79% this morning. If that included WC figures he would've gone up 3 times already, as 1.5m people have brought him in this week. I'd say they're not far off accurate.

    2. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

either way it'll just be a 0.2 rise this week .. feared a 0.3 and that looks unlikely now atleast 🙂

Seriously not getting this ADM love? It's like the Tekkers wagon a few weeks back. Peeps closing their eyes and hoping for the best...

I had him when he was on fire earlier in the season. 75% of his goals were lucky deflections.
He only gets 70 mins, he isn't looking sharp, QPR away isn't an easy game, they gave City a ride for their money there. Will prob end up being a 1-1.

Reckon players like Chadli, Downing, Siggy are better options and you can use the cash to strengthen elsewhere.

It's just my opinion so do whatever you wanna do.

Mmm...Interesting article in the papers this morning about how "rejection" affects youth players.... Quite timely as my son goes for some coaching again tonight by Everton. Gonna have to be careful with this lark.

Pretty much my team except I've got Pantillimon instead of Foster, Wisdom instead of Hutton, and Colback instead of Chadli. I've destroyed my team value by selling players then buying them back at a higher price, hence the Colback.

that's not too bad, at cheap budget fourth mid could be a good differential

Dyche said he was taken off as a precaution as his hamstring was a little tight but is hoping he'll be fine for Saturday

Im on my WC and have actually gone with Oscar in my team instead of Sterling. Can't afford Fabregas & not keeping Costa.

I can't believe such an overwhelming majority have gone for Kane and Aguero in the captain's poll. Aguero has just come back from injury, Tottenham are prone to calamity, and their opponents Sunderland have shown solid defenderliness. I'm going to go with Costa, I think, he loves scoring hat tricks against Swansea.

I'm thinking having Aguero this week will be differential enough

Sunderland aren't that great defensively & people have gone for Kane/Aguero because the former is in good form while the latter has the potential for explosive returns.

I think it's more down to the lack of alternative options.

Costa? Sure, but away from home.

Arsenal are away at City, ruling Sanchez out for most. Man Utd are away.

It's natural that people are looking at the league's best striker and the in form striker at home to weak opposition.

What do you guys make of a back 7 of

    Forster, Foster
    Terry, PVA, Dummett, Hutton, Cameron

Do you reckon it's alright or a bit too lightweight? Have 0.9 in the bank.

Forster to Myhill/Pants and Dummett to Berty.. Reckon Pants will be the topscoring GK till the end of the season with savepoints in his locker

This is what I've come up with on my WC. Thoughts/Suggestions please.

Plan to do Clyne to Koscielny after this GW unless something funny happens.

    Foster Panti
    Ivanovic Bertrand Clyne [Wisdom PVA]
    Hazard Sanchez DiMaria Fabregas [Boyd]
    Aguero Austin Kane(C)

Not sure Ivanovic is worth the extra over Terry? I don't like Austin's fixtures, think he might struggle for goals now.

Dont have anywhere else to use the 0.6 I get from doing Ivan to Terry & personally think he has higher attacking returns potential.

Austin I'm not so sure of myself but dont think there's an upgrade availaible at a similar price.
