Shane Long fires Southampton past Ipswich in the cup but the win comes at a cost, as the injuries rack up for Ronald Koeman. Tottenham get the better of Burnley in a six-goal thriller at the Lane, with a number of fringe players on the scorehseet for both sides, whilst Robin van Persie looks poised to miss United’s trip to QPR due to an ankle injury.

INJURIES MOUNT IN SAINTS WIN

Ronald Koeman fielded a 3-5-2 formation for Southampton’s FA Cup third round replay with Ipswich last night, making five changes to his starting line-up in the process. Nathaniel Clyne was deployed as a right wing-back, with Ryan Bertrand alongside Florin Gardos and Jose Fonte in the back three, whilst youngsters Matt Targett and Harrison Reed were afforded starts. Shane Long put his side ahead early on with an instinctive strike, and the Saints held on for their second 1-0 victory in the space of four days to book their spot in the fourth round.

However, last night’s win came at a price; Victor Wanyama was forced off at half time after suffering a hamstring problem, whilst Dusan Tadic was also withdrawn due to a hip complaint. Post-match, Koeman was seemingly pessimistic over Wanyama’s situation:

“I already spoke before the game with Victor and Steven Davis as I had made the decision to give both players 45 minutes. Then 12 seconds before half-time, he got his hamstring injury and, okay, you know if it is really a hamstring injury then he will be out for four or five weeks.”

Morgan Schneiderlin missed out entirely with an adductor injury, and Koeman confirmed that the midfielder could miss up to a month with the problem:

“Schneiderlin has a little bit the same as he had when he came back from the French national team. It is an adductor problem in his right leg and he will be out for three or four weeks, like Toby Alderweireld, but, okay, we have a lot of young players.”

The Scout Says: Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Saints’ injury problems are beginning to mount just as we start to wield our winter wildcards. With Alderweireld missing from their rearguard and Wanyama looking very likely to join Schneiderlin on the sidelines, managers may begin to question whether Southampton can continue to deliver the sort of defensive returns that have made their backline assets such popular picks in recent times. Their fixtures are certainly enticing (new, SWA, qpr, WHM), but injuries to important players in key areas will certainly dent their prospects and Koeman will be more reliant than ever on Graziano Pelle finding his form if the St Mary’s outfit are to retain their top three ambitions.

SPURS RALLY TO COMEBACK VICTORY

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his Spurs starting XI for their FA Cup replay with Burnley. Jan Vertonghen, Benjamin Stambouli, Andros Townsend and Danny Rose were the quartet to keep their places, with the latter fielded as a left-winger, whilst Roberto Soldado replaced Harry Kane up front. Despite falling behind to two early goals, Spurs rallied back through goals from Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Rose to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: The north Londoners’ fringe players certainly staked a claim with last night’s defiant comeback display, though Pochettino is still likely to recall his regulars to the starting line-up against Sunderland this weekend. Soldado’s display was particularly encouraging, as the Spaniard earned two assists against the Clarets, though he failed to find the net despite several decent chances. Nevertheless, Harry Kane will surely be reinstated up top on Saturday, and with Spurs now scoring an impressive nine goals in their last two home matches, the England Under-21 star is understandably leading this week’s Captain Poll. Paulinho, meanwhile, supplemented his strike with two assists last night, and could now come into contention for his first league start of the current campaign against the Black Cats at the expense of Mousa Dembele or Stambouli.

CLARETS FAIL TO CAPITALISE ON EARLY LEAD

There were five changes to Burnley’s line-up for yesterday’s cup defeat, with the likes of George Boyd, Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes all benched for the White Hart Lane encounter. Marvin Sordell put the visitors ahead just three minutes into the tie after latching onto Kieran Trippier’s long ball, before Ross Wallace doubled the Clarets’ lead with a deflected free-kick shortly after.

After the match, Sean Dyche confirmed that Trippier was withdrawn in the second-half due to a hamstring problem but is confident the right-back will be fit for this weekend. The Clarets boss also discussed Sam Vokes’ fitness after the forward played from start to finish:

“The massive positive is Sam Vokes coming through 95 minutes, when you think of the length of time out. He was a little ring-rusty, but that will come with fitness and training. We had to be cautious with Tripps at the end because he had a tight hamstring. I think he’ll be ok, but ultimately it’s a night of disappointment.”

The Scout Says: In spite of yesterday’s defeat, Burnley’s attacking form remains impressive, with 11 goals now accrued in their previous five matches in all competitions and a variety of their attacking assets getting their names on the scoresheet. With Crystal Palace, Sunderland and West Brom up next in the league, the Clarets have an opportunity to make that offensive form count; Ings has already earned over 18,000 new owners this week after fetching returns in each of his last three outings, and with last night’s rest ensuring he’ll be fully refreshed for the weekend, the 5.7-valued forward could be set to profit further. Boyd has, similarly, found himself in many managers’ transfer plans recently thanks to back-to-back goals in Gameweeks 19 and 20 and, having risen in price over the last few days, is clearly being regarded as more than just a cut-price bench-warmer.

VAN PERSIE A DOUBT FOR WEEKEND

Reports suggest that Robin van Persie is expected to miss Man United’s trip to QPR this weekend with the ankle problem sustained against Southampton last Sunday.

The Scout Says: Whilst the same report indicates that the Dutchman’s injury is only a minor one, and that he should return in time for United’s FA Cup duties in two Fridays’ time, his 3.8% owners are likely to be looking for an exit route anyway. The 12.3-priced forward has scored just once in his last five league appearances, and with the Reds stuttering against the Saints, faith in their attacking assets is at a low point, with many Van Persie owners shifting their target to the similarly-priced Sergio Aguero. Angel di Maria partnered Van Persie up top last time out, and should continue in that role at Loftus Road, though who will join him is uncertain; Radamel Falcao could be recalled after being dropped last weekend, though Louis Van Gaal also has the option of bringing Wayne Rooney further forward in what would be an encouraging move for his band of owners, bearing in mind that the United skipper has blanked in four of the last five Gameweeks from a deep-lying position.

Gardos might only play two weeks. That's the two weeks, when they don't have Wanyama and Schneiderlin, that's their defensive midfield!
Gardos himself isn't as good as Alderweireld either, so I'd defenitely go Cameron-long term

    Foster/Myhill

    Terry / PvA / Naylor / Hutton / Wisdom

    Alexis / Haz / Fab / Downing / Boyd

    Kun / Sturridge / Kane

Could go AdM rather than Fab, which would let me upgrade Downing to Chadli. Thoughts?

I posted that last night, but figure some more people would like to read it:

Here's a small advice to increase your teamvalue when you're on a wildcard that I've been missing out on all these years and just thought about at the john a few minutes back. 🙂
I posted that last night, but figure some more people would like to read it:

Imagine you have a team and 5.5 left for one player. Player A is the one you want and he's 5.5. He's due to rise once this week. Let's say on thursday.
Player B is also 5.5 and he just scored a brace this week. His fixtures and stats aren't good though and you don't want to get him instead of player A at all but a lot of people do and so he's due to rise twice this week. let's say tuesday and friday.
Normally I would have had player B, hoping that he would rise his second time before Player A rises but after his first rise, I find out that player A will rise today (thursday). So I lose him, admitting defeat and get player A's rise just for safety reasons. If player B doesn't rise for a second time, I'd obviously save value. But here comes the tricky part. I always thought that it wouldn't matter, if I got 2 rises by player B and then swap to player A who rose once in the mean time (having gotten 0.1 selling value by Player B and 5.6 in the bank, which I use to get Player A who's now on 5.6 as well due to his one rise). But the difference obviously is that if I sell player A in the second scenerio two weeks later, I'll still get 5.6 for him whereas in the first scenerio my (seemingly indifferent early switch to player A on thursday) will only give me his original 5.5 if I sell him, in case he doesn't rise once more in the weeks after.
This might be logic to some already but it just opend my eyes. 🙂
Get your player when he's more expensive!

It obviously works the same with two players from absolutely different price ranges, so if we know a player will rise twice (and they still do if they get a brace, even in the new pricechangesystem) we can generally relax and won't fear that Player A rises beforehand (although we'd still prefer that he didn't).

Get double rise out of random player.

Purchase the player you want at 4.6 instead of 4.5 as a result of waiting. No net gain at this time. However when the player rise by 0.2 you actually get 0.1 value back rather than the 0.1 you would have already gained by just buying the player at 4.5.

Its the equivalent of winning the league on goal difference. Essentially meaningless.

What are the risks of not getting a double rise and therefore selling yourself short with this method.

Its a dangerous game that just isnt worth itt.

        • 14 Years

Yeah this is the risk involved in it. The second rise not happening before the end of the GW, in which case you're either stuck with a player you don't want (if you want to wait for the rise), or you miss out on the 0.1 from the player you actually want.

        1. Ginkapo FPL

Yup, in any case where you can be sure of a double rise, chances are that you actually want that player.

          Example: Aguero this week.

I do understand that price rises were easier to predict last year but this Weeks double rise to Aguero will have been predictible. So if you had a player that you wanted instead (like Ings or Austin who rose once this week) it's fair to say, that it's still better to get Agüero and then swap him to Ings or Austin on saturday morning.

Obviously you'd keep Agüero but it could be the other way round one day..

The idea is to effectively bank the cash from price rises.

So while the TV will be the same, the selling value will be 0.1 higher.

This has always sounded good in theory, but the no. of double risers you *don't* want yourself are minimal. Who are they for people wildcarding this week for example?
Basically people making transfers at this stage of the game are smarter than this strategy gives them credit for.
It works better early in the game when more people are still playing.
By this stage there aren't enough non-clued up players left in the game to fuel these double rises on weak picks

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 14 Years

And the selection of decent picks who are not rising themselves which make double risers work so well historically in the early season wildcard.

He could. I don't think he will. FFF has him far away from rising but price changes are somewhat unpredictable at the moment.

The nonsense about Aguero price rises written on here has been startling. People were talking about an 0.6 rise in 2 weeks and hardly anyone was challenging that view.

When Aguero was fit and banging goals in almost every week it took 12 weeks for him to rise from 12.0 to 12.8. Why anyone should imagine 0.6 in 2 weeks to be likely when many of his transfers in will be on wildcards which don't appear to count for price rises in the normal way is beyond me.

Great will prob WC next week.

Want to bring in Aguero/ADM this week but don't know which.

The obvious choice is Aguero, esp to everyone on here but to me it seems a bit forced right now. (due to price changes)
ADM has a much better fixture, more guaranteed playing time, and might play up top with no RVP. He is also had more playing time to come back to form.

When you put it like that then CC sounds quite plausible, although I doubt you'll go far wrong with either.

Despite Southampton injuries I still believe Clyne-Bertrand duo can provide me some points. Jack Cork is back and young Reed looks good in the middle so I'm goona give them a chance 🙂

This is my Winter Wildcard selection and depending on next two weeks I'll take my decision about which Chelsea deffender deserves place in my team for the rest of the season (really hope Filipe Luis to be nailed on). So here they are:

    Hammer Panti
    Trippier Moreno Bertrand Clyne Wisdom
    Hazard Sanchez Silva Chadli Boyd
    Aguero Austin Kane(c)

    1.8 itb ... Any opinions? 🙂

doubling up on any D is has huge risks/reward potential...
I don't particularly like it because all it takes is one set piece, one second of brilliance by an opposing player, one bad call by the ref (PK or missed offside) to concede.

I'll start them both only an easy to get fixtures like SWA and WH. I'm not gonna take that risk on away games like this one that comes in (Newcastle away). For this week only I'm gonna start with Berty(he plays on Janmaat's zone) Moreno and Trippier (If he is fit) and my first bench option for def will be Clyne - Wisdom won't get CS on Everton away imo ( not sure Soton will get that one - Newcastle are danger at home) 🙂

You misunderstand Chelsea. The only 'nailed-on' Chelsea defender is JT who is unlikely to miss a PL game till the title is settled (barring injury). The next nearest is Ivan. All the others can (and will) be rotated to some degree.

Ivan-Cahill-JT-Azpi is still Mourinho's first choice back four and will tend to be played in the toughest games if all are fit. But with Cahill and Azpi (and to a lesser extent Ivan) you run a risk of them being rested for Zouma and/or Luis in 'easier' games.

Then I must secure Terry's return to my team after next 2 though Chelsea fixtures I guess. I already brought him up last week, but don't know why dropped him to get Bertrand on Sunday night.. may be because of lack of money tbh, and know I'm sorry for that... Hope Clyne to rise just before the deadline to swap him for Terry (I'm sure Swansea can't score against Chelsea this GW) Cheers !

    1FT

    A) Ivanovic to Baines (two weeks punt)
    B) Austin to Kane

Chelsea have not the best next two fixtures so I would probably downgrade Baines to Terry when i WC. But, what about Kane? I'm really scared to not own him this GW and I would probably put the armband on if I buy him

Baines is a good punt for 2 weeks and you probably don't lose TV by selling Ivan. It's a reasonable move in view of fixtures.

Austin to Kane really depends on whether you want Austin and/or Kane after wildcard. If you won't want Austin and will want Kane then now seems a good time to move because Kane is likely to continue rising whilst the Austin price has probably peaked.

    My Wildcard Team :

    Krul-Pants
    Terry - Bertrand - Wisdom - Wasly - Cameron
    Boyd - Hazard - ADM - Sanchez - Puncheon
    Costa - Kane - Kun

    0.5 in the bank

    Thoughts?

I think three cheap attacking players (Boyd, Puncheon, Kane) runs the risk of leaving yourself with restricted options should one get injured. I'd be tempted to switch Bertrand for a slightly cheaper pick, perhaps Jones or Moreno.

        Apologies for false optimism.

Apparently this is the current situation from City season ticket holder in the know:

    Help!

    Current Team:

    Panti | Heaton
    Moreno | O'Shea | Wisdom | Hutton | Clyne
    Siggy | Sterling | Sanchez | Hazard | Silva
    Austin | Costa | Kane

    My idea:

    Use Wildcard, do:
    Moreno >> Wasi
    Sterling >> Boyd
    Austin >> Aguero

    ITB after these 3 changes = 0.0

Thoughts? Should I do it this week? Or wait till next week? I am worried Aguero's price will go up after GW22.

    Any help appreciated! Cheers.
