We cast an analytical eye over last weekend’s fixtures this afternoon, evaluating the evolution of City’s fleet-footed No. 10, Liverpool’s defensive fortitude on their travels and the blank Gameweek headache.

The Player

David Silva’s brace in Manchester City’s 5-0 humbling of Newcastle city underlined his heightened goal threat this season. This is the first campaign in the Spanish playmaker’s Premier League career that he’s notched more goals (nine) than assists (seven); it’s also already his most profitable season in front of goal, eclipsing the seven strikes he accrued last term.

Among the highest scoring midfielders in the league this season, the former Valencia star’s nine-goal haul puts him on par with Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard, and three shy of Alexis Sanchez’s 12 – although, it’s worth noting that Silva has clocked at least 330 fewer minutes than each of these competitors.

In light of Yaya Toure’s return from the African Cup of Nations, many Fantasy managers would have earmarked the Ivorian as the premier route into the Champions midfield – a fair deduction given his streak of six goals in eight appearances before international duty beckoned. However, Toure’s inferior tally of goals (seven) and assists (one) in near-identical minutes to Silva, and weightier price tag (10.7 to 9.4) has thrown up an interesting contest between the pair.

Certainly, pinpointing coverage for Manuel Pellegrini’s side has been afforded greater importance by the absence of numerous high-ownership players next Gameweek. With Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank forcing many managers to bench their big-hitters and field less illustrious back-ups, it’s no surprise to see that Silva has been granted an upsurge in new owners – over 31,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already drafted him in since his 17-point haul against Newcastle, far more than any other player so far.

For now, Silva sits eighth among his midfield counterparts in the Fantasy ownership stakes, having been selected by 19% of managers but one look at the fixtures suggests that could be set to rise further. Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table.

The Team

After shipping 16 goals in their first eight away league matches, Liverpool have now recorded five clean sheets on the road for the first time in 30 years. The Merseysiders are unbeaten in ten and have accumulated 23 points out of a possible 27 in their previous nine fixtures as Brendan Rodgers’ side make a belated claim for a top four finish.

This feat is made all the more impressive when you consider that Rodgers has fielded the likes of Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe as wing-backs in a 3-4-2-1 formation, balancing the conflicting requirements of width and defensive cover. Liverpool will do well to maintain their newfound defensive resilience as they embark on a run of fixtures (MCI, BUR, swa, MUN, ars) that includes three of the Premier League’s current top four, though with Martin Skrtel in imperious form and Emre Can’s addition proving crucial at the back, there seems little doubt they can prevail. Frustratingly, Rodgers’ decision to bench Alberto Moreno at St Mary’s has lessened his appeal, though, and with Can classified as a midfielder, Skrtel looks the safest option here.

The Reds have been impressive going forward, too, netting five in their last two outings, but Daniel Sturridge’s restoration as a viable high-cost forward will have to wait a little longer – the former Chelsea striker wasn’t named in the starting line-up, having featured in their midweek Europa League clash against Benfica.

With attacking returns in two of his last four league appearances, Philippe Coutinho (7.7) edges ever close to relevancy in the mid-priced midfielder bracket, though fellow weekend scorer Raheem Sterling (8.4) has served up returns in five of his last seven now and, as evidenced by their 2-0 win at St Mary’s, the Reds have the form at both ends of the pitch to trump any fixture right now.

The Talking Point

One look at the ownership levels in the FPL game highlights the issues caused by Gameweek 27 blanks for the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and QPR. Two of the top four defenders (Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry), three of the top six midfielders (Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Christian Eriksen) and three of the top five forwards (Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Charlie Austin) are all affected, handing Fantasy managers a real weekend headache.

Heading into a double Gameweek 28, Spurs’ involvement in crucial domestic and European cup ties leaves us with rotation doubts. Allied to this, the north Londoners face two relatively kind fixtures in their double, so you’d expect boss Mauricio Pochettino to possibly rest a select few during the league ties. Whilst Kane’s 12 goals in 11 outings makes him virtually undroppable, Pochettino’s decision to bench Eriksen against the Hammers yesterday clearly backfired and will surely persuade his manager to start with the Dane as the north London club attempt to get their bid for a top four finish back on track.

With regards to Chelsea coverage, few will want to cash in on the FPL’s leading defender (Ivanovic) or midfielder (Hazard), though Costa may be deemed dispensable as more look to the in-form Aguero as an alternative, with the Argentine finding his stride again.

With our benches set to be fully tested, our struggle to field 11 active players has been further compounded by the declining favour of budget defenders like Patrick van Aanholt and Andre Wisdom, with the latter still sitting third (20.3%) among defender ownership rankings. Balancing our squads and keeping points hits to a minimum looks a tricky task, then, and navigating the options to ensure we take advantage of the next two Gameweeks could well prove critical to many a mini-league success.

Great fixtures and may be on pens. I think he'll do ok, and this is a bit of a rubbish reason, but he's an easy bench option in GW28 unlike most others!

I also have Walcott sitting iny my team getting limited returns (Leicester midweek seems ages ago) and not sure whether to stick or twist.

Given I have 8 poss starters and already have used my transfer to sort out nightmare defence (only have Terry nailed on!) it would be annoying to take a needless hit when I plan on taking a hit next GW.

I'd be too scared to ditch him, he's such a phenomenal player and he's capable of racking up a huge haul at any time - a bit like Aguero.

That's probably what separates the people at the very top from the rest though, I could well be hanging on to him for too long.

True, it's seeing him rack up constant little scores while those in the same team kill it that's making me twitchy. Funds are another issue.

Sell for Eriksen if he blanks again. Too much competition at Arsenal now for big hauls to justify his cost. 2 Million could definitely be used elsewhere.

Is it really that wise to take many hits this week to field a decent XI?

Max hits I would take is -4 and obviously wouldn't spend it on the defence which has fallen apart, would rather take a hit in midfield for an nailed on bonafide starter.

The prospect of not having ADM or Sterling scares me a litte, the former could be a big differential.

I have the same problem. I have a 2 point lead in manager of the month (£90) and a 53 point lead for the season (£1500). I only plan to use one of my FT's but keep thinking about how the extra couple of points from a shitty 11th defender could be the difference this month. I promised myself I'd ignore manager of the month but it's difficult.

Great team imo, although Vidic are both LCB's so won't play in a 2.

Nani needs another chance at United. And I like Rooney up top.

    Sánchez-Walcott-Silva-Moses(Hazard)
    Aguero-Giroud(Kane)

2ft, 1itb.Is PVA>Rose a good transfer or too risky? Will only transfer him after the euro league game. This way will probably have 2 ft for after the dgw. What you think?

Don't know if any Mods will see this but in the article I feel like there's an error in one of the paragraphs:

"Although City’s next match-up – a trip to Anfield to face a resolute Liverpool defence – is potentially tricky, the following four until their fixtures (LEI, bur, WBA, cry) could see Silva wreak havoc as the champions chase down Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea at the top of the table."

Seems to be missing a few words or something. Hope this helps.

Surely worth using for a DGWer? Especially given both teams have reasonable fixtures to follow.

Austin vs Vert/Lloris for a hit for me. Possibly both for an 8 pointer

He is probably the best defender in the game right now, not sacrifacing him for a Verthongen punt. Thanks for your help, I think I've made up my mind.

Yep, best option at that price. I'd wait for the midweekers though in case you get an injury elsewhere. After all, PVA could still play....

See above, might not afford next week's transfer if I wait.. PVA could play, but it's not looking likely. Even if he plays it's United away.

Baird & Erikson out for this week. Leave funds to fetch Erik back for dgw.

Mad not to have Kane for DGW and have Eriksen and Austin instead?

Yes stupid not to have and captain Kane

It's ridiculous if Matic has to serve a three match ban for what can only be described as a natural and wholly understandable reaction to some nutter trying to break his leg.

Do we really want to wander into the realms of players deliberately trying to provoke reactions to get players sent off....because that's how it will go.

Sadly it's not just happening in Football, anybody who reacts to any kind of provocation is immediately deemed to be the wrong doer...

      I politely disagree Wakey.

That's like saying someone shouldn't go to prison for taking the law into their own hands (think Tony Martin). It's pretty understandable he reacted like that but he deserves the ban.

But it goes too far....We are wandering into situations where nobody is allowed to react or say anything whenever they are being provoked, or in this case somebody trying to do your leg in...

Reacting to situations like the Matic incident is a natural reaction...

      I disagree with you
They can't react to everything like mad men. Sure Barnes had an ugly tackle. Doesn't mean you can just run him down for it. They are suppose to be role models not lunatics who take things into their own hands

If United don't get top 4, do we think that plonker LVG will get the sack?

    Scouters:

    Foster
    Fonte - Bertrand - PVA - Wasilesky
    Walcott - Mane - Puncheon - Boyd
    Aguero - Sturridge

    Krull - Terry - Hazard - Kane

    2 FT and £2.3M ITB

Just Wasi for now or something better?
    Thoughts?

Dawson, Naughton, Haidara, McShane good cheap options.

Walcott has started the last two home games, so may be time to keep and get rid next week instead.

For this week only, would you rather have:

    a) Haidara (AVL)
    b) Naughton (bur)

Don't worry, 0-0 quite possible as both teams are more competent defensively then offensively.
