Tottenham’s quest to muscle their way into a top four berth sees them welcoming a buoyant Swansea City side to the Lane on Wednesday, before making the short trip across the capital to face Queen Park Rangers in their second match of Gameweek 28. While there’s doubtless a couple of standout candidates for Spurs coverage in their double, the north London club’s recent exploits in domestic and European cups raises one or two questions regarding rotation.

The Prospects

First up for Tottenham is a match-up with the Swans on Wednesday evening. The visitors’ form has fluctuated in their previous 10 outings, yet back-to-back victories – which included the Welsh outfit’s first ever double over Manchester United – means Garry Monk’s side enter this clash in high spirits. Furthermore, they’ve recorded wins and clean sheets in two of their previous three road matches, shutting out Southampton and Burnley.

That being said, inspecting the underlying stats from their victory over Burnley suggests they aren’t dominating matches, with Swansea scraping the win through a Kieran Trippier own goal, having only fashioned two attempts on goal. In the wake of Wilfried Bony’s transfer to Manchester City and Bafetimbi Gomis’ sporadic attacking returns, Ki Sung-Yeung has emerged as an unlikely goal threat, registering two goals in his previous four starts. Considering Tottenham are without a clean sheet in their last four home ties, the South Korean midfielder will fancy his chances to build on a five-goal haul this term.

Spurs close out a testing run of four matches within the space of 10 days when they visit London rivals QPR on Saturday afternoon. R’s boss Chris Ramsey will hope to avoid a repeat of the reverse fixture, in which Tottenham humbled the Hoops 4-0 at the Lane. Charlie Austin, who’s scored six in his last nine appearances, will be central to the hosts’ desire to enact revenge.

The Likely Lads

Having netted 12 times in his last 11 league starts, Harry Kane is the form player of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) by some margin. Despite a fixture pile-up complicating matters, the 6.2-priced Kane remains an essential pick – however, bearing in mind that he’s the most popular player in the FPL by some distance (45% ownership), it’s likely that our additional coverage for the double could be key to making a difference.

After starting 34 consecutive league matches, Christian Eriksen (8.4) dropped to the bench for the trip to West Ham, with his manager clearly having one eye on the Capital One Cup Final. With Spurs now out of the Europa League and looking to bounce back from their loss to Chelsea, though, can Pochettino really afford to rest Eriksen as he looks to finish the season strongly? This hot topic by Jonty on Eriksen’s prospects is certainly worth a read.

Intriguingly, it’s worth noting that Eriksen has never gone more than three matches without finding the net this season – food for thought, given that’s he’s failed to notch in his last trio of appearances. With six sets of double figures already accrued and an average of 4.8 points per appearance, the Dane’s potential is obvious – little wonder over 80,000 have already snapped him up this week.

With uncertainty surrounding the other spots in midfield and the Spurs defence far from impressive, it could be argued that, aside from Kane and Eriksen, any other option looks no more than a punt. For those eyeing up the Spurs defence, Hugo Lloris (5.6) is nailed-on and has been the best points scorer, boasting an average (3.7) that surpasses that of Danny Rose (3.4) and Jan Vertonghen (2.9). This can primarily be attributed to his propensity for picking up save points, having made at least three saves in nine of his last 10 outings. Six clean sheets for the campaign hardly inspires confidence, yet QPR’s inability to score in three of their four home encounters increases the chances of a shut-out.

The Cheeky Punt

As highlighted by Ludo’s recent community article on Navigating the Spurs double Gameweek, rotation is a concern here and limits our reliable options. If you’re willing to roll the dice, though, Mousa Dembele (5.2) looked to have generated some momentum recently – with one goal and two assists in three outings – before he was hauled off at half time against West Ham following a wretched 45 minutes. Named amongst the subs yesterday, he has, nonetheless, started each of the last seven Premier League outings, whereas Nacer Chadli has failed to feature in the first XI in the league since Gameweek 22, at a time where Erik Lamela has started each of the last four. Chadli’s reinstatement to the first-team for yesterday’s loss to Chelsea perhaps hints at increased pitch time but, despite an impressive 4.6 points per appearance (Eriksen has 4.8), there’s no doubt he remains a real risky prospect in terms of guaranteed pitch time judging by recent team sheets.

Danny Rose has been an unlikely source of attacking returns in recent weeks. The left-back has started each of the last seven and tallied two goals over that period and, at 4.9, the former Leeds full-back is one of the cheaper routes into Spurs’ back line. Rose should be less prone to rotation than others, having been rested for their Europa League clash against Fiorentina, but Pochettino could still hand Ben Davies a start, thus slightly denting his prospects in spite of his recent form.

Jan Vertonghen looks the most likely defender to play from start to finish in both encounters, though the downside is that his form isn’t on par with Rose. While Eric Dier and Federico Fazio have shared centre-back duties, the Belgian international has completed Spurs’ last 15 league matches and scored in Gameweek 22. Potential investors will have to weigh up whether his 5.9 price tag is justified, though, considering the wealth of superior alternatives in that price bracket beyond the double Gameweek.

      Sturridge at home to Burnley

      or

Austin at home to Arsenal and Tottenham

I'd go with Austin purely because he'll probably play 180 minutes and is on penalty duty as well.

Can someone tell me how injury flags affect price changes, does a player's transfers in/out get reset to 0 whenever their flag changes?

    1. The Hound
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 4 months ago

Not quite, the threshold increases more if they have a flag and even more for a darker flag. Once a flag is removed it resets to zero.

If the flag is removed it'll reset. If goes from red to orange or vice versa it isn't reset. Price will be frozen for a while if red flag is removed

That has potential to pay off, especially if Berahino is injured and can't play.

As if Ozil would be in the side if that were a concern. Basically it's start Wally for Wenger or he'll be looking at a transfer request. Perfect match to run him out.

personally i think wally is a good diff if you have the space and are prepared for a bit of uncertainty(good bench cover) with a mix of potential high scoring
i havent got that space currently

coq"s injury and ability to play is an extra uncertainty

No I appreciate the info. Just not sure that's the reason. Sanchez and Ozil picm themselves basically. And Caz has been playing CM. Can understand why Wenger would go for more work rate there. But that's Wenger's fault, not Wally's. He should have the stones to rest players who need rest and buy players to balance the side. Ozil has no business plying his trade in the Prem.

His attitude, work rate and finishing are all equally shocking. He's a luxury player and even as luxury players go his overall contribution is shocking. Tailor made for Serie A.

I got sick of him been benched and not playing so sold him for eriksen. He could well start and do well though. Saying that I'd always refuse to bench a penalty taker, makes them fixture and bench proof IMO.

Abit off topic here, was planning to wake up to finally get tickets for my first ever EPL game and somehow it was all sold out.. West Ham vs Stoke

The funny thing is even though they say I can't buy the tickets, why are there still seats available but I'm unable to purchase them during General Sale?

Also, is it easier to get tickets from the home / away team?

Yes I'm using the official website and I already registered. However to my surprised I am unable to even get tickets. When I clicked choose seats, they straight away put no seats available for me to book however I can still find empty ones I just can't add them into my list.

And the funny thing is based on the website, I'm able to get tickets for the West Ham - Chelsea Game tmr as a general public. A DAY BEFORE. and a London Derby but I'm not able to get a West Ham Stoke ticket on the first day of general sale?

Are you in England ? Try an away game , tickets go on general sale today for Leicester v West Ham, always a better atmosphere at away games, £35 ticket, £22 the coach (if you require)

Sadly I'll be travelling to UK on the 11th April weekend, was really hoping to watch an EPL game. Will be staying in Central London that whole weekend (I'm coming from Singapore, so that explains why I really want to catch a game)

But yeah, another concern is that I'll be travelling alone, I was planning to find a safe location too. I checked out the Lei vs West Ham one, it looks sold out to me. I can't book also

But is it legit, cause I'm buying online and I want the safest possible means. Don't want to go to the stadium and get disappointed..

        2. Jay_

East London is not the safest of Locations , so stay in either Central ( where you already are which is nice , or Essex, I had trouble to buy online for the Leicester match too , the reason why Chelsea is still avabaule is because the cheapest tickets are 70 pounds and for Stoke they ate less than half of that , good luck getting a ticket , you will love it ( if possible sit in the East stand lower ( or chicken run as it's known ) near the away supporters , great atmosphere

Yeah, Its actually about 60 Pounds including taxes, but I'm surprised it's available espicially if the game is tmr? I don't think I'll be able to get tickets though sadly. What are the chances that I go to the Stoke general sale (away) and manage to purchase tickets for the West Ham game?

And also out of these 3 fixtures : West Ham Stoke , Tottenham Villa and QPR Chelsea, the easiest to get tickets should be the first 1 right?

            1. Jay_
              11 years, 4 months ago

I wouldn't recommend sitting in the Stoke end if you are supporting West Ham 🙂 if you really want a ticket out of those I would guess Villa away to Spurs and sit in the Villa end because they can't even sell their home tickets so should easily get a ticket

I'm not really a West Ham fan! As long as there are goals I'm happy! The only team I really support is Leeds so yeah! The issue with that is I'm not too sure about Villa general tickets sale, haven't seen it before. While Spurs general sale opens 2 days time.

                this
but think carefully if you need the aggro of being an away fan in EPL
to be very frank i'd guess qpr chelski will be on at silly oclock given its a derby-i'd case out some pubs and enjoy the game that way
or go into championship land-fulham always a good shout

Yes I know it's going to be near impossible to get that london derby game. Was hoping QPR was playing some other clubs so I would have the chance to watch. Sadly mostly all the championship clubs in London are playing away that weekend other than Milwall.

And being a Leeds Fan and having to watch Milwall play at home isn't one of the popular things I would want to do. But if I can't get any tickets I guess I don't have a choice eh?

if its your first game ,and an away at that,go for the coach for atmosphere and being clear about the 'routine' and meeting up with like minded types

The thing is that I'm a neutral EPL fan! I'm okay with all teams. Just that I'm not too sure about the coach thing. Didn't read up on that. If i was planning to watch an away game, it still has to be in Central London

Yes it's a Leeds grav! Was hoping to watch Charlton vs Leeds but it's a week later, and I'm not going to Elland Road sadly.. So I've to make do with EPL Games (Not complaining here 😛 )

    Help Lads!

    Foster
    Bellerin/Janmaat/Vertonghen
    Ozil/Silva/Yaya/Eriksen
    Kane(C)/Aguero/Defoe

Have Azpilicueta and Bruce on the bench, any reason to start either of them over Defoe?... Or should I rest Janmaat as they play UTD

Home against top 10 teams Austin have averaged 3.33 points per game.
Away against bottom 10 teams Giroud has averaged 4.67 point per game.
Austin has 8 points total in the last 4 home games.
Giroud has 25 points total in the last 4 away games.
Austin will be playing both games at home against top 10 teams.
Giroud will be playing one game away against a bottom 10 team.

That makes sense Austin is very expendable. As for the above 4 however its not so easy.

Aye, has been criminally under the radar all season long and yeah it it tough to take one of those out. Newcastle still do have great attacking fixtures in their next six though, hopefully he'll make way in one of puntmaster's articles soon 😉

Of those listed. I think Giroud is by far the most expendable. Has had Costa esque tendencies of late to scrape by with 6 points or so, by getting booked often and being a BAPs repellent

Yes this is probably true. In which case it depends on the balance of a side. If Aguero is your only big hitter up front then get Cisse. If you plan on having Aguero and Costa then there probably isn't any room for Cisse.

Took him out for Kane 🙁 Frustrating game, need to bring players that you dont want in team just for the sake of safety 😡

That's name of the game eh? Just take the 8 points and run though Holmes, he did you good and Kane is the man to have, can always be an option in a few weeks as he's very easy to obtain

Btw, what a monster week you had bud, kudos to you and your bold decision making of late. Very well played

      NEW is a strange team.

      1. No backup defenders.
      2. 6'5" Ameobi takes corners, forcing Coloccini et al to come forward to make up the pack.

Ha, good call out on Ameobi taking corners, hadn't noticed.

Cisse's a reliable goalscorer though and it's definitely shown this season, averaging a goal every 83 minutes or so, that's extraordinary. When Cisse's on his game, he's a force

Cisse's incredible. Best natural goal poacher in the game. Nerves ice cold when presented an opportunity. Strange why NEW played him so little. He's nailed now.

On Ameobi, come to think of it, when has there ever been a 6'5" winger? Jonah Lomu?
