Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

There’s no surprise to see that Tottenham’s man of the moment Harry Kane is the runaway favourite ahead of a double Gameweek for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. With 12 goals in his last 11 appearances, the 6.2-priced striker – selected by over 64% – has blanked just twice and registered five sets of 10+ points hauls over that period ahead of showdowns with Swansea and QPR.

Sergio Aguero earns second spot as City welcome Leicester to the Etihad. The Argentine has now earned points in each of the last five Gameweeks and bearing in mind the Foxes have conceded at least twice in nine of their last ten away matches, he looks likely to deliver for his 12% backers.

Christian Eriksen earns 5% of the votes for Tottenham’s double. The Dane has now drawn blanks in each of his last three but has already served up a 13-point haul against visitors Swansea earlier in the season, whilst the R’s dire defensive displays – 45 goals against is joint worst along with Burnley – certainly bode well as he looks to add to his nine-goal tally. Romelu Lukaku also earns 5% of the votes cast despite scoring once since Gameweek 14.

Charlie Austin has served up a goal and assist in his last three matches and is boosted by back-to-back home clashes with Arsenal and Spurs. The R’s frontman has proven somewhat fixture-proof, though, and has netted against four of the top six (Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Southampton) already – when on the pitch, he’s played a part in 61% of QPR’s home goals this season.

Southampton’s Sadio Mane is the only other player with more than 1% of the votes cast. He plays host to a Palace side with one shut-out in seven under Alan Pardew and was handed a brief role up front against West Brom last weekend before a switch of formation by Ronald Koeman. David Silva has five goals and an assist in his last six home matches as Leicester come calling, including hauls of 16 and 17 points, whilst Wayne Rooney is also in contention for United’s trip to Newcastle after a move up front helped him bag a brace against Sunderland on Saturday.

Which three defenders to play out of:

    Hutton
    Terry
    Dawson
    Van Aarnholt
    Clichy

I'm thinking Dawson / Terry / Clichy at the moment.

Mane needs to explode. He's pretty much my only differential after getting rid of Walcott. Surely the stats back him up...it's time

    Foster
    Terry Fonte PVA (Naughton Haidara)
    Haz Sanchez Eriksen Mane
    Aguero Kane Austin

Posted in the other article, just as this went live - oops! Can anyone help with this:

I want to bring in Kane & Eriksen, and I currently have

    Forster / Guzan
    Bellerin / Terry / Bertrand / Clyne / Vlaar
    Hazard / Sterling / Downing / Sanchez / Gil
    Kun / Defoe / Berahino
2FT, and 1.6m in the bank

I'm definitely keeping Hazard and Sterling, so my decision hinges around whether to drop Sanchez.

    Drop Sanchez:
    Sanchez -> Eriksen
Defoe or Berahino -> Kane (would normally be a no-brainer Defoe, but Berahino may not play(?)).
I could then opt to take a -4 hit to upgrade somewhere (Downing to Silva sound good?), or save the extra cash to switch Eriksen to Ozil next GW.

Keep Sanchez and take a hit somewhere else in order to get the funds:
    Downing -> Eriksen
    Defoe/Berahino -> Kane
    one of either
Terry -> Zouma (might get rotated out?)
Berahino/Defoe -> Zamora (DGW but unlikely to get many points)

What would be the better play?

    Any other suggestions welcome too!
    Cheers all!

      Drop Sanchez.

I reckon the Arsenal midfield will continue to pick up points but they will be distributed amongst the whole bunch of attacking mids. Better off with giroud

I think this is what people selling Sanchez are telling themselves, but all his lack of recent hauls says to me is that one is coming up directly, esp. with some kind fixtures. Possibly tomorrow night.

        1. Malrog
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

And there's my dilemma! If I get Silva for Downing, that might ease my pain a little when Sanchez inevitably gets a hattrick after I drop him...

        2. Sharkytect
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

The whole 'lack of hauls suggest one is coming' is surely the same as gambling on the same horse again and again because 'they haven't won for ages, so a win is coming'?

I expect he will get more goals throughout the season, but not it a vein that supports his cost in comparison with that of Ozil, cazorla and Walcott

          1. Malrog
            • 11 Years
            11 years, 2 months ago

You've convinced me! I'm gonna do it! That leaves me with

            Forster
            Terry / Bertrand / Clyne
            Hazard / Downing / Eriksen / Sterling
            Aguero(vc) / Kane(c) / Berahino

Bellerin / Gil / Vlaar (good grief my bench is awful!)

I know Berahino may not be fit, and Downing isn't ideal, so should I swap one of them out and take a -4 hit? And if so which:
Berahino -> Austin (for the DGW goodness)
            Downing -> Silva

Cheers, I am leaning that way, but it's hard to push the button when I got him relatively cheaply!

I know the feeling. It's like you can't go back once you've sold him.

I sold him a few weeks back and been lucky since.

Can't afford Austin, Zamora frees up cash to allow me to keep Sanchez.

I almost wish I hadn't read this. I had my team sorted and now I'm considering captaining Aguero, almost as a 'differential', it seems!

Surely Kane is the best captain choice?

It was just made to look so tempting by that generous Leicester defence... Plus Kane could get a bit of a rest if we take a two goal lead, say...

Kane is the obvious, but Aguero could easily score twice tonight. Easily.

    Defoe - Austin
    ADM - Eriksen
    Jones - Bertrand
    Cazorla - Silva

    Worth a -8pt hit?

        ADM-Eriksen

Yes. He will probably be rested for one game, and will concede a needless free-kick, get booked, and concede a goal in the other game.

Ok, quite a specific prediction, but don't captain him!

For a draft league! Which of these two would you play?

    A) Theo
    B) ADM
    C) Neither - play 4-3-3 instead. Extra defender would be one of: Per, Zouma

Zouma out probably, Luis might well play for Azpi, Oscar in, probably Cuadrado for Willian, Courtois for Cech. Maybe those 4 changes to freshen it up.

"The versatility Kane has shown this season makes him difficult to predict because he can affect games in a number of different ways.

He may also head into the game tomorrow with a little bit of extra added motivation after the League Cup final defeat last weekend.

The best approach for the Swans in terms of contain Kane is difficult to judge."
