The weekend’s nine fixtures have heralded in a number of new injuries, with yet another hamstring setback for Chelsea’s main striker proving the headline-grabber.

Arsenal
Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey were both forced off during the Gunners’ win over Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime. After the match, Arsene Wenger revealed he was optimistic on the pair’s fitness:

”Koscielny has a little tightness in his thigh..He had a muscular problem, but a small one..and Ramsey’s is an ankle problem, but it’s not bad.”

Wojciech Szczesny missed out yesterday due to a rib problem.

Aston Villa
Tim Sherwood is pessimistic over the prospects of Ashley Westwood and Scott Sinclair making Villa’s home clash with QPR on Tuesday after the duo missed yesterday’s trip to United with hamstring injuries. Sherwood also rolled out an update on Alan Hutton’s fitness after the defender was forced off at Old Trafford:

”They’re both injured. I wouldn’t have thought they’ll be back for Tuesday. It’s disappointing. The injuries are crippling. But we’ve just got to get on with it. We lost Alan to injury today. As quick as we are getting them back, we are losing them. Alan wanted to stay on the pitch desperately. He was desperate to stay on and do well for the club but unfortunately he couldn’t. His ankle was too sore. It’s going to be a struggle for him. I’ve never known injuries like it. It’s unbelievable.”

The Villains’ boss is a little more optimistic on Aly Cissokho and Kieran Richardson’s prospects of being available to face the R’s:

“I hope so but I’m not holding my breath.”

Chelsea
Diego Costa lasted just 11 minutes as a second-half substitute before his hamstring issues forced him off against Stoke. Discussing the likely period of absence, Jose Mourinho reckons the Spain international is set to miss the Gameweek 33 showdown with United:

“It’s too early. He has to go home, he has to wait 48 hours. He has to do all the scans again. He will be out for sure a couple of weeks, but we have seven weeks until the end of the season. Seven weeks and eight matches. For sure, in half of it he has to be with us.”

Mourinho also conceded that the decision to throw Costa on at the break with the match all-square was a risky tactic but refused to blame the club’s medical department as a result of his star forward’s setback:

“I don’t say a gamble because we did every test, we did every scan. The player trained two days 100 per cent with the team, the medical department was convinced that he was ready. The player was convinced he was ready, not for 90 minutes, but he was ready to play and to help the team. Sometimes as a manager I have to risk things. Medical departments have to do the same, if they want to be top medical departments like our department is. The safe medical department cannot work with me. People with fear, afraid to risk, cannot work with me. My medical department is fantastic, they do fantastically well for us. Today between them and the player and myself, things didn’t happen the best way, but I’m happy with that, because it’s football.”

Everton
Darron Gibson is set for a period on the sidelines after sustaining a foot injury in training on Friday morning, Roberto Martinez has confirmed:

“We don’t know yet how long Darron will be out because, obviously, the specialist needs to give us an answer as to how we are going to treat the injury. Yesterday, in a very innocuous action just in the box, he rolled his ankle and didn’t realise anything was wrong. Then, this morning, it was swollen and when we checked it he has a fracture in his metatarsal which is really devastating and our win today is for him. It’s such a tough period, we need to support him and make sure we get him back as quick as we can.”

Hull
Curtis Davis was unavailable for the Tigers’ trip to Swansea due to a thigh problem. Andrew Robertson missed out through injury, whilst Gaston Ramirez lasted less than 30 minutes before being forced off due to injury, according to match reports. The on-loan Uruguayan is unavailable for next weekend regardless as he cannot play against parent club Southampton.

Liverpool
Mario Balotelli missed the trip to Arsenal after sustaining a knee knock in training, Brendan Rodgers has revealed:

”He trained yesterday afternoon with the team and took a slight knock to his knee. He deemed it that he was not able to travel with the team. He felt it was too sore to travel. The medical staff have looked at it. It was something that he himself didn’t feel comfortable with to travel.”

QPR
Eduardo Vargas was forced off through injury just 30 minutes into yesterday’s win at West Brom. Club medics are waiting for swelling to subside before sending the player for scans.

Sunderland
Jack Rodwell missed today’s derby win over Newcastle due to a hamstring injury.

Swansea
Kyle Naughton was forced off with an ankle problem during the Swans’ weekend win over Hull. Naughton was involved in a challenge with David Meyler which resulted in the latter’s dismissal but after the match, Garry Monk refused to blame the Tigers midfielder:

“He’s gone to hospital for an x-ray. His ankle swelled up after coming off. I think it was a 50-50 ball. It was a bad challenge, but I don’t think there was any malice from the player.”

Tottenham
Jan Vertonghen was unavailable for today’s trip to Burnley due to illness, the club has confirmed. Kyle Walker lasted just two minutes of the second-half before limping off with an ankle problem sustained prior to the break. The right-back left the stadium in crutches but Mauricio Pochettino remains optimistic on his prospects:

”We expect and we hope that it’s not a big issue.”

Extra game is the main reason & the better team angle. Drogba is the main issue making Gomis an option.

All hinges on how long Costa is gone for really. TBH i don't really fancy Remy that much as a 2 week punt. But if he's in line to play the next 3GWs (inc. the double) then i can't ignore him

You say it like it's a bad thing. The best team in the league have 1 more game than everyone else, it's a sensible move (Leicester don't count lol)

true but I think it's easy to then ignore his risk of mins (with drogba) and also costa (who I just have a sneaky feeling may play 1 of the dgw games).

I need more info on costa and more quotes from jose in terms of how he plans to cope without costa before committing

yep maybe i stated it incorrectly. I think you should look for 3 chelsea players but I think it's unwise to rush into remy this instance

I would get Rooney before any other forward, but I would have to sell either Sanchez, or Eriksen plus a defender to create the cash. One involves losing a potential big scorer (for a big scorer), and one involves a hit. Therefore, I will probably get either Berahino, Gomis, or remy.

Jeez..Is that still going on. Ruth is obviously right...The point is that very high ownership players shrink the game in effect...Nothing to do with whether they are a good/great player or not...They just shrink the game (shrink is a better word than "ruin")

There will always be playing who "shrink" the game.
If you captained them each week like Suarez last season then that's makes more for a boring season. Hazard is another but he doesn't have the captain appeal either.

I'll still take the 5 extra points over Costa last week.

It was to do with the topic of Kane. Noticed he didn't captain Kane when I thought he did afterwards. A misunderstanding of a reply in which I was stating Kane was big factor in GW30. Maybe I posted it in the wrong way or should have posted it in the Hot Topic that formed afterwards. Don't think my post was against the rules here but I may be wrong.

There will always be reasons for template teams, afterall everyone want the players who are scoring the best, who knows whether this year worse than any other, I think there have been 2 bigger factors than Kane
              A) The best team in the league, Chelsea have been so consistent in terms of team selection and fantasy scorers
              B) the double gameweeks have provided us with so few candidates that everyone seems to buy the se players

Of course and I'm not comparing them in anyway. Ruth has his own arguments for selling Kane and thats fair enough. I'm just suggesting that people shouldn't get too wound up about it and be a little more open minded.

He's like chewing gum. Hellish difficult to get rid of when he has good fixtures and other transfers are more pressing. Even if ideally you'd want him out.

I finally bit the bullet and dropped him this week. It was either Aguero or Costa out for Rooney. Chose the wrong one to remove unfortunately. 😉

A bit of crystal ball gazing into next season.

I'm gonna assume that RVP (?) and Falcao will be long gone for United and that Rooney will be reinstalled as the striker he always should have been. Rooney was the top striker in the country for goals prior to RVP ousting him from his full time berth...so...will he be again next season ?...any thoughts ?...

      • 14 Years

Mainly depends on finish this season (champs league), amount of new signings (time to gel), fixtures, price, other forwards on show at other teams

        • 13 Years

I think Rooney is an absolutely outstanding striker (in a bullish way)...United treat him shabbily for a couple of years. RVP's scoring record in his first season at United fell well short of Rooney's in the previous season.

Yeah, probably. Rooney is capable of doing it with the very best and no danger. If he even smells like a full time striker next season I'm all over him..

RVP in his first season at united...30 goals in 48 games..

      OK, here's my crystal ball...

United will sign Kane for around £50-60m.

Rooney will play just behind him.

I have to say that my crystal ball appears not to have been functioning perfectly in recent weeks however. 😉

They will need to buy a new striker if they are getting rid of Falcao and RVP, there is no doubt about it.

I don't know why they doubt Rooney as a striker (maybe doubt is the wrong word). I know he plays really well as a No10..no problem...but he is also lethal as an out and out striker...as good as anybody for many years.

I agree. I thought he should play as striker instead of Sturridge in the World Cup last summer.

But he plays 10 (just off the striker) really well too. Should never be played outside those two positions in my view.

That's why I say summer 2016. Rooney deserves at least one more season as the man. And waiting another season to go after Kane makes sure he isn't a flash in the pan, which he most certainly is not. Kane is the perfect Rooney replacement and they would prove a very fruitful partnership until Rooney hangs them up.

Best idea. For what it's worth I believe that Costa will be out for 4-6 weeks from what I have heard and may not play again this season if Chelsea can wrap things up in the next month.

Remy is a player about whom Mourinho said "I owe him more starts" even before Costa's injury recurrence. He may not often get 90 minutes but I expect him to start for the foreseeable future. Drogba is almost certain to retire at the end of the season and will mostly be used as a sub.

      I think it's very unlikely.

      1. I highly doubt Chelsea would agree while the title is not yet settled, they'd be relying on Jamal Blackman (21) as backup for Courtois.
      2. If they agreed they'd want a substantial loan fee that Southampton wouldn't want to pay.
      3. I highly doubt Cech would want to go there anyway. He'll hope to collect his final PL medal before leaving in the summer and may well play the final game against Sunderland.
      4. The chance of the PL agreeing an emergency loan is slim when Southampton have 2 fit senior GKS in their squad.
      5. I believe FIFA would also have to agree to a re-registration outside the transfer window and that is highly unlikely too.

Emergency loans are usually for lower league clubs who have effectively run out of players. Not for PL clubs who have 25-man squads.

          Wow.

I would consider Schmeichel instead of Davis. Has a good GW33 fixture, a DGW in 34 and pairs well with Pantilimon. But knowing you, you are seeking to up the Southampton defence. Personally I'm not so convinced that's the way to go.

Murray is a wild, wild punt for you. 😉 Almost like my Auntie telling me she's thinking of getting a boob job. I see the appeal with fixtures but I'm not convinced at all. A lot depends on your other plans but I'm really keen on Rooney if you can afford him.

You really need to wait though. It is not impossible that Liverpool have a DGW in GW34 and you should know by the end of the week. If they do you'll need to prepare for that.

Cheers mate. Yeah, not too keen on a Leicester goalkeeper.

Haha, I guess, but I think he is a decent option. The other options are Rooney, Gomis, Sakho (West Ham), Berahino. There's no standout option.

Yep. If Liverpool do lose to Blackburn, what do you think about Terry/Ivan -> Sakho which frees up another Chelsea spot to do Austin -> Remy?

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 11 months ago

I think that could be extremely sensible. Though from the way JT was talking on Chelsea TV they are thinking that their defence can carry them to the title even without Costa.

Remy is a very good option. I didn't mention him before because I knew you had 3 Chelsea. Sakho is in my plans as well.

By the way, the "boob job" comparison was only to say that Murray is a very left field idea which isn't your usual style. 😉

There's a chance but it's not very likely.

Mourinho talked about "owing Remy more starts" last Friday at the presser and that was before Costa's injury recurrence. In addition Drogba has been struggling with a persistent ankle problem and it's not sure he can play 90 minutes. The word is he will probably retire at the end of this season.

I think Remy will get a good run, especially given that Costa may well be out for 4-6 weeks and could easily not play again this season if Chelsea wrap the title up in the next month.

Right, yeah that's understandable. Remy does deserve more time.

Do you think it's worth doing the Terry -> Sakho move (and hence Austin -> Remy) even if LFC win (and have a 33 blank) assuming I can still field 11?

You won't be able to unless you are planning to shift Bellerin. Bellerin, PvA, Sakho will all have blanks.

If you are planning to shift Bellerin then maybe yes. But that will be your GW33 transfer and you'll then arrive in GW34 with 1FT. If Liverpool-Hull happens in GW34 you'd need a hit to get 3 Liverpool. That's the risk.

Looking at your team overall I think you need to keep the 3 Chelsea you have and aim to arrive in GW 34 with 2 FTs. After that it will all be about adding Arsenal and Liverpool I think. Maybe Austin to Giroud this week (and bench him in GW33) is the best way to go. I'd save the GK transfer too and possibly shift Krul for Ospina after the blank. Something like that.

Yeah, but planning to shift Bellerin as you said in GW33.

I don't think 3 Liverpool is necessary, there aren't three good options. 1 defender is enough, sterling hasn't proved himself, coutinho has dropped off. Sturridge always injured.

Yeah Giroud is probably the safest option, seems stupid bringing him in now though, before a blank and CHE. Is one game away to Burnley worth it? I'm not so sure.

It's tough, I haven't been this confused about transfers in a long time!

Well, if you aren't concerned about 3 Liverpool, JT/Ivan to Sakho and Austin to Remy with Bellerin coming out in GW33 looks fine.

I am planning on 3 Liverpool, probably Sakho, Henderson and Sterling/Coutinho. I assumed you'd be wanting to do something similar.

Injuries are a real leveller...I've posted a few times this season that strikers are paid to score goals...that's their job...Aguero and Costa are great strikers, damned near world class...but in the end they are fighting it out with the likes of Charlie Austin for the golden boot..

If you happened to be the (next) City manager would you consider ditching Aguero ?

    1. NABIL - FPL otai
      • 13 Years

Some are far more injury prone. Sturridge and Aguero will never be full time players. Not sure about Costa but it seems something isn't right despite keep patching him up. How often can you make excuses for injured players when your job as a manager is to actually win games...?

          • 13 Years

Sticking with quality players is one thing, making excuses for injured players is a different story. Kun is too good to let go.

Remember Ramsey? If we are to ditch player just for the sake of perceived "injury-prone", then we will never see the quality in him today. But then there was Darren Anderton too.

It's a tough call. With a striker it's a bit easier because in the end the worth to the club is roughly how many times he scores a season (kinda) ....That's the bottom line after all other discussions have been had...

            1. NABIL - FPL otai
              • 13 Years

"the worth to the club is roughly how many times he scores a season (kinda)" - if this is always the case then we would've sold Bergkamp a long time ago. And Giroud to a very much lesser extent nowadays.

And that's my point...I don't doubt the quality of the Arsenal team for a second...they're fantastic...but...Because they perhaps have more than their quota of injury prone players as well in midfield then it impacts on their ability to win trophies...as was shown earlier in the season.

Arsenal could easily be competing with Chelsea this season, as could City, but Chelsea have players made out of old World War One battleships whilst their competitors are busy wondering why their dquad is held together with sticky back plastic and balsa wood...

😆 that last para was hilarious

As much as I agree with it it's not their fault entirely. Costa is an already known fragile player before he joined CHE, and when ever-presence JT is your captain then maybe the rest think they can be that physically reliable too.

in a nutshell I won't sell a very good striker just because he's perceived as injury prone.

        It really is.

Who would Chelsea, Arsenal or United want for example?

Hart - maybe Arsenal but United and Chelsea have better GKs.
Zabaleta - maybe United but I'm not even sure of that. Not Arsenal, not Chelsea.
Kompany - all three would have him probably but not on this season's form.
Clichy/Kolarov - all three have better left back options.
Toure - would help any team but is 31 now. Toure alongside Matic would be immense for a couple of seasons though.
Nasri - I don't think he gets into any of the 3 teams.
Silva - magician but I'm not sure Arsenal would prefer him to what they have and I'm not sure his style fits Chelsea or United. Certainly good enough though.
Aguero - they'd all want him, end of. Injury prone or not.

I can't actually see more than 4 City players that would make the other teams. Their squad apart from those is pretty average for a CL team.

Managers dont really care about the golden boot so long as somebody is scoring. Aguero scores 20 goals and Austin scores 20 goals might seem bad value but then you have all the goals scored by the Bonys/Dzekos etc. in Agueros absence.

Personally I think Aguero is a cut above and worth it to have him for the times he's fit, esp for a club like CIty who can easily afford it. Now a similarly injury prone player like Walcott I dont think justifies a position in a top club cos he just doesnt bring enough to the table.

Think that becomes less accurate with every passing year though. Aguero's game is about getting into great positions rather than being clinical. With every injury comes the risk he could return half the player he was.

It must be hard for managers though. As a manager you are paid to get results for the club, and if a big club then hopefully win trophies. So as a manager your job depends on players being fit and ready to play...it isn't the same as being an FPL manager or a fan of the game...On that basis and in that situation I'm not sure I'd want the likes of Aguero and Studge...

City managers are being hired on a 2 - 3 year cycle . Chances are they will not make it to 3 years because the demands are so high . Replacing Aguero and only have a short time to replace him would probably cost the manager his job

I probably would think the opposite nearly. It isnt about scoring goals. Its about scoring the right goals. Aguero is a top player. A game changer who you can rely on to bang a winner against United.

It must be tough alright though to be relying on such a big player and then see them stuck on the pines injured half the season.

Truth is that this City squad is ageing after a rather unsucessful period in their prime(2 PL titles, a few cups and 2 UCL knockout games) is nothing given what was invested.

This summer is make or break for Pellegrini and City's investors, huge shake up needed.

That was in December. I was sure they'd add another striker and some spine help. Instead Koeman went after as many crap retreads as possible.

But you know this don't you. You were there.

was before that and was based on the squad they had not on possible signings. it was their depth that impressed ya. I know that because I was saying they'd need a lot of luck with injuries to hold 5th.
was not a ridiculous thing to say at all btw. if Pelle didn't bizarrely stop scoring they'd be in the mix.
just saying at least nostradamus had the good sense to be vague as a mofo with his prophecies.

TBF I was expecting JRod back then too. But as soon as the likes of Elia and that other guy that sucks came in I changed my tune immediately. It was obvious Koeman had grown a bit arrogant. Fast forward two months they're playing crap and he's talking about joining Barcelona. The joker.

yeah he has dropped a lot in my estimations too. as a manager anyway. brilliant player. can see why lvg hates him now.
suppose there was only one way but down after the start he had. every signing in a new league was just gold and hit the ground running. since when does that happen!

What plans have people got for the Chelsea coverage in DGW34.

I was planning on adding Costa to Hazard and Terry this week but that will have to wait. It seems a waste to add Ivan and have double Chelsea defence so it may have to be Fabregas if Costa doesn't recover. Remy also tempting but Drogba might get a game.

The other risk with Remy is whether we'll get a clear view on how long Costa is out for or will it be another of Jose's cryptic press conferences.

Planning on Remy or Gomis for this week unless Liverpool end up with a DGW34

Kosc has a good fixture this week so he can wait.

Austin out needs to be one transfer. I'm considering Terry -> Sakho which allows Austin -> Remy (Already have three Chelsea). Or you could take a punt on Gomis, Sakho, Berahino etc.

Alright, aye I just saw a massive Silva-less hole in your midifled. One of the few midfielders constantly bringing in the points, like you said it´s hard to counter his form at the moment.

If you´re getting Remy in, then it seems Austin to Remy, and Terry out this week is the de-fact route to take. Sanchez to SIlva next week?
