A dreadfully drab Easter Sunday stifles the previously unstoppable force that is Harry Kane as the Spurs talisman blanks at Turf Moor. Meanwhile, a former White Hart Lane favourite provides the key moment of quality as Jermain Defoe’s sweetly stuck winner decides the Wear-Tyne derby. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s “action”…

Kane subdued in bore draw

Harry Kane was isolated for large periods at Turf Moor as Sunday’s early kick ended in a 0-0 stalemate between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley – the North London club’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 23. The Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) highest-scoring forward was hampered by a dearth of creativity, as Spurs struggled to unlock the home defence.

Skippering Spurs on the day, Kane managed just two goal attempts in 94 minutes against Clarets and was responsible for one of two shots on target for Spurs. Having blanked at Old Trafford in Gameweek 29, Kane’s lack of service on the road will be a minor concern which could dent the captaincy faith ahead of the trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 33. Nonetheless, a home encounter with Aston Villa up next will serve as a prime opportunity for Kane to restore parity and bag his 20th goal of the campaign.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made two enforced changes in defence, with Vlad Chiriches earning a rare start at centre-back as Jan Vertonghen missed out through illness (breaking a run of 19 league starts for the Belgian). Michel Vorm replacing the injured Hugo Lloris in goal. Elsewhere, Andros Townsend, somewhat surprisingly, gave way to Paulinho: the Brazilian lined up at the No. 10 role in a 4-3-2-1 set-up, shifting Christian Eriksen out onto the right flank.

Eriksen’s blank means that he has now failed to net in eight league outings, with only two assists in that period to bolster his points tally. Again, the 26% holding the Spurs asset will likely keep the faith ahead of the White Hart Lane meeting with Villa.

On the injury front, Kyle Walker was subbed off early in the second half having sustained a blow to the foot in the first 45. Speaking in his post-match press conference, Pochettino revealed that the right-back is unlikely to be sidelined for an extended period, yet there’s clearly a question mark over his availability for Spurs next match-up against the Villains. In the event of his absence – and Vertonghen’s return – Chiriches will likely be tasked with filling in.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche named an unchanged side from that which fell to a 2-0 defeat against Southampton last time out, as the Clarets earned their second successive home clean sheet. Despite Burnley’s recent resilience, upcoming matches against Arsenal and Everton seem unlikely to return further shut-outs.

Having tallied five goals in six starts from Gameweeks 20 to 25, Danny Ings has now drawn blanks in his last six appearances, with the improved Arsenal defence up next.

Defoe screamer grounds Magpies

Jermain Defoe announced his return to the scoresheet in spectacular fashion in the Wear-Tyne derby, rifling in a 22-yard volley to seal a 1-0 victory for Sunderland.

The former Tottenham striker had toiled in the past six Gameweeks but will now be flowing with confidence ahead of an enticing quintet of fixtures (CPL, blank, sto, SOU, eve, LEI). Sunderland’s blank Gameweek 33 provides a major obstacle to investment, but another productive performance against the Eagles for Defoe could render him a short-term prospect from Gameweek 34.

Equally, there could be value in re-assessing the Sunderland black line. Dick Advocaat’s first win in charge of the Black Cats was a largely routine affair for the defence. Santiago Vergini was recalled in the centre in place of the injured Wes Brown, while Anthony Reveillere lost out to Billy Jones at right-back. Patrick van Aanholt, now at just 4.1 in the FPL, appears to be re-instated as the stand-out option.

Newcastle’s fourth loss in a row means that they now boast just one victory in their last eight outings. The Magpies look devoid of direction and ill-equipped to cope with a tricky double (liv, TOT) in the coming Gameweeks in light of their injury-hit back line. Fabricio Coloccini still has one more match of his suspension to serve, while top striker Papiss Cisse is sidelined for a further four fixtures. Considering the Toon took 78 minutes to register their first shot on target, Cisse’s presence is clearly impacting their goal threat.

Who has no Arsenal this week? Who's scared?

    \o/

    but...

Burnley at home this season, vs....
    - Chelsea - lost 3-1 (first game of the season)
    - Arsenal - to play
    - United - drew 0-0
    - City - won 1-0
    - Liverpool - lost 1-0
    - Spurs - drew 0-0
    - Southampton - won 1-0

Arsenal are the unstoppable force, but Burnley are the immovable object it seems.

Arsenal should win, but we shouldn't be THAT scared, right? 😉

As I have triple Arsenal I'm hoping they destroy Burnley. Last chance that they are somewhat of a differential.

        10 years, 11 months ago

Yep, exactly. But equally, faith in Burnley could be a bit of a differential - i.e. I assume many will be re-buying Arsenal players for one week out of fear.

Only the casuals would do that I think. Anyone in the top 10k will be aware of the upcoming blank and will avoid regardless.

    Good morning, all.

What're people's thoughts on this team for the next GW - should I swap Austin and Dawson?

Dawson does indeed, but I think Leicester will be going for it and considering WBA's defensive showing this weekend......And Austin has already scored against CHE - tough one.

Yer, I might even do a double transfer this week: Silva + Austin --> Coutinho + Remy.

      Nice going!

For me the Hendo pick is a bit like Caz from Arsenal, not sustainable enough in fantasy terms. Couts too reliant on long distance screamers too. Sterling will always outscore them given a run of games.

Kane > Austin (c) is paying off then.

Decided not to telegraph that move here as a bunch of very sensible posters would've talked me down from it.

The question for me now is, do I bring him straight back in - or stick with my hunch that he and Spurs are pretty much stick-a-fork in me done for the season now and get Bony in?

I'm up in the top 1k again and whenever I manage to get up there it's never playing safe, so tempted to stick to my guns and not to get him back but open to arguments if people think he's season keeper for them.

Hi all, first time poster, long time reader....

Had Kun/Kane/Giroud for a while now but was looking at the next GW to bin off Kun (MU away) and get in Costa in prep for the DGW and to free up a bit of cash to shore up the midfield (Haz/Sanchez/Eriksen/Silva/Puncheon). Currently 0FT and 0.0 ITB.

Now that Costa is off the cards would you stick with Kun or twist? If twist, who would you go for? This is assuming he has an average performance today.

Just to back up my point about Burnley...

These tables represent home matches played vs the current top 7 only.

    Team.......................Points won per game
    Chelsea...................2.00
    Manchester City......2.00
    Spurs.......................2.00
    Man United..............1.75
    Liverpool..................1.67
    Arsenal....................1.60
    Burnley....................1.33

    Team......................Goals conceded per game
    Chelsea..................0.50
    Man United.............0.50
    Burnley...................0.67
    Manchester City.....1.00
    Arsenal...................1.20

In case my tables haven't formatted correctly, I'll re-phrase:

Only the top 6 themselves have won more points on average at home to the big teams.

AND only Chelsea and United have conceded less goals per game at home to the big teams. I'd say this is particularly important... We don't need Burnley to win. We just need them not to concede a load of goals (please).

    😀

I have 2FT and 2.3m ITB but not sure what to do.. all my 5 defenders have good fixtures so thinking of doing Cazorla -> someone?

    My team now is:

    Panti
    Ivan Clyne Alderwield
    Hazard Silva Sterling Cazorla
    Aguero Giroud Kane

    Krul Bellerin Dawson Boyd

    A) Cazorla -> Fabregas
    B) Bellerin -> Schlupp to prepare for DGW?

    Thanks..

Does Berahino still take their penalties? Could be nice short term punt.

He could be a nice punt, so could Gomis/Murray who are in better form.

Yes. West Brom don't score enough though. And when they do it could be Brown Ideye (e.g. Bera isn't the main man)

    Premier League goals in 2014/15.

    Bellerin: 2
    Balotelli: 1

    And we almost signed him

He'd probably do well for you guys if you had signed him, Rodgers is just completely useless with certain players.. Markovic and Sterling out of position all season, Balotelli used wrongly or too little all the time, Reina frozen out, trouble with Sakho, waiting too long to use Can and so on

Balotelli has had a colossal number of easy chances on goal that he's missed. You cannot mask the fact that he has been utter sh!t

    On the West Brom defence:

I know Dawson was suspended at the weekend, but Myhill behind the back four does not inspire a great deal of confidence.
I suppose you get what you pay for.

            Haha!!

It is so hard though. Probably my toughest decision for most of the season, espcially because I have 2FT.

Do I bring in Remy for Austin and get rid of Terry for Sakho (already have three chelsea), would mean I have to use a FT in 33 to bring in a playing defender though.

Do I just do Austin -> Murray/Sakho/Berahino/Gomis/ and do Krul to Davis?

Do I just get in Giroud and forget about it?

Or should I do Austin -> Rooney?

            So many choices!

our teams are very similar, this one is a complete dilemna! I am definitely erring towards bringing in Remy and shifting one of my two chelsea defenders as well. got a feeling whatever I do right now it will be the wrong thing!

                Yep, definitely a dilemma.

To be honest, I'm leaning towards Austin -> Murray, and Krul -> K Davis. Thing with Remy is even if he starts (which is no 100% certainty) he'll probably be hauled off at 70-80 mins. Also, we don't know when Costa will back, or whether Remy will start both DGW games (Drogba could start one, presumably the Arsenal one :D)

I think us double Chelsea owners have been very unlucky to be completely honest. SOU, hul and STK has at least two, if not three CS written over it. Not 0!

That's why I think I'll be patient with them. I think they'll come good.
