There were two newcomers to the Suspension Tightrope after last weekend’s Premier League action, with London-based pair Joey Barton and Winston Reid picking up their ninth yellows of the campaign. Sebastian Larsson toppled off the edge, having received his tenth yellow for pulling at the shirt of Newcastle striker Emmanuel Riviere in the Wear-Tyne derby – the Swedish midfielder now sits out the Black Cats’ home tie against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 32 and their visit to Stoke City in Gameweek 34 after the Wearsiders’ blank.

Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas, Ciaran ClarkPhil Bardsley, Victor Wanyama and Neil Taylor remain just one ill-judged challenge shy of a two-match suspension, with the yellow card limit set to increase to 15 after the April 12 cut-off date.

Jack Colback accrued his 11th yellow this term (all awarded in league ties) at the Stadium of Light and could join a select few players who have tallied 11 or more in the last five seasons. Unsurprisingly, Lee Cattermole is one of the two that’s achieved the feat, earning 13 (ten in the league) in 2011/12. The other is Cheick Tiote, who surpassed the mark in 2010/11 with 14 league bookings, making him the only player to chalk up over 11 league yellows in a single season over the last five years. Should Colback manage to pick up a further four yellows in the Magpies’ final seven clashes, he’ll receive a three-match ban that would carry over to next season. Alan Hutton (eight in the league), Gareth Barry (nine league) and the aforementioned Cattermole (ten league) comprise the chasing pack on ten cautions apiece.

Moving on to the newly-suspended players, West Bromwich Albion enforcer Youssuf Mulumbu was handed a red card for elbowing Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton – the DR Congo international misses the Baggies next three matches (LEI, cry, LIV) and will return in Gameweek 35 in time for a trip to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Hull City midfielder David Meyler received a straight red for a lunging tackle on Swansea City’s Kyle Naughton three minutes into their encounter at the Liberty Stadium – the Ireland international sits out the Tigers’ upcoming trio of fixtures (sou, LIV, cry) and will be back in contention when they entertain Arsenal in Gameweek 35.

Toon skipper Fabricio Coloccini serves out the last match of his ban in Gameweek 32 and will be available for the Tynesiders’ home clash against Tottenham the following weekend. Mile Jedinak, Tom Huddlestone and Craig Dawson return to their teams in the next wave of fixtures to face Sunderland, Southampton and Leicester City, respectively.

Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel serve the second of their respective three-match bans in tomorrow night’s cup replay at Blackburn. The duo will also miss next Monday’s home clash against Newcastle and will return to action the following weekend – depending on the outcome of their Ewood Park encounter, that fixture will either be an FA Cup Semi-Final against Aston Villa or a Gameweek 33 trip to Hull.

Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans remain stuck in the stands after their spitting altercation in Gameweek 28.

Lukaku and Varane. Gross. Also don't think Clyne will be worth the outlay. Schneiderlin a much better buy and more what we need than Pogba and if we're buying a striker it has to be Kane.

              Varane is quality.

Clyne could be a good deal this summer as he only has a year left on his contract.

              Kane would never leave Spurs

Varane has been crap this season. And if Real do let him go is nailed on for Chelsea. Clyne would still cost north of 20m if not 30m. I just don't see the point. He's no better than Rafa. And Kane will be a Red Devil. Nailed on Rooney replacement.

Everyone thought Herrera, Mata and Smalling were deadweight this season at certain points. LvG could still bring Rafa back into the team. And he loves Val. Also seems to want to mold Paddy into a RB. Think it'd be daft to buy a RB right now. Would rather us buy two CB and Jones cover there if need be.

I already have Terry, Clyne, Dawson, PVA.

Is Schlupp the one to get with the DGW coming up ?, and what about Palace defence ? They're playing sun, WBA, HUL in the next three and might get a CS there. Are Dann or Ward decent picks ?

    Panti - Myhill
    Terry - Clyne - Toby - Dawson - Bruce
    Hazard - Sanchez - Silva - Erikson - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    2FTs, 2.0itb

Nothing pressing. I'm just benching Sanchez for the blank and selling Austin after the next GW. I don't like wasting a transfer so i'm thinking Terry > Ivan in preparation for the DGW. Anything else anyone can see?

Does it matter now that football is all about who/what clubs have the most money or has it always been this way?
As a Liverpool fan last two weeks (with Sterling's comments and the loss to £160m summer transfer Utd and 300k a week Rooney) have me realising that we can now only ever compete for the cups and even then there'd have to be a fair bit of luck to get one of them!

Last year was a complete fluke with arguably one of the best players on the planet playing for us!

That's because you throw a lot of money away, and you haven't consistently had CL. With good management you could have maintained position in the top 4, and then built from there.

Difficult now with Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Man U in good positions though... might have to wait a while to get another crack at it.

I have to agree here, no doubts in my mind Pool could build a good team if they bought correctly. £16 million or whatever it was for Balo was simply flushing money down the drain.

But if Pool bought the right players and secured back to back CL over a few seasons, even if they were stripped of the original players they would be in a position to attract others. For me, the biggest thing that would make Pool attractive to some bigger names was getting CL again this season, it is why Arsenal (despite having not won the PL in 10 years or so) can attract some big names (I know location may be a factor but I guarantee you consistent CL would be a bigger one).

Pool have squandered a lot of cash in recent seasons, which is annoying to watch as they could be doing much better.

And you are right to a certain extent. But as a hypothetical, what if they didn't spend the money on both Lovren and Sakho? They could, in theory, afford a higher level CB and combine the wages to make a pretty attractive contract offer. Remember that a lot of players from the likes of La Liga and Bundesliga don't earn remotely what PL players earn, so they could definitely attract a few big ones.

      A) Wage structure. LFC pay baby wages compared to the big dogs
      B) Manager. Rodgers doesn't attract stars, Wenger/Mourinho can
      C) European stability. LFC have 0
      D) London > Liverpool. Footballers' wives.

I presume you are talking"Nett" here if it is that was the case until last summer when you went on a buying spree not seen before!

What's 200-300k a week..... £10-15M a year for four/five year contract £40-75M outlay on top of transfer fee......

Yep Liverpool cannot afford this! These £16-20M transfer fees a pittance to the overall package. Sure Lukaku sold for £28M it's all about the wages!!

Actually, has anyone a link to clubs wage bills?

Once Gerrard has gone, will there be any Liverpool player on over 100k a year. Maybe Skrtel or Ballotelli??

I know Allen, Henderson, Lallana, Can, Coutinho and Markovic aren't close to it.

Try being club outside of the current top 6...

Most clubs could only dream of spending £50m+ in one transfer window, let alone grumble about wages.

As already pointed out, Liverpool have wasted a tonne of cash on average players (and then sold some of them to West Ham 😆 .

As a West Ham fan I know that the only way we could ever regularly achieve top four football, let alone the title, is by a billionaire taking over, frankly thats quite sad. Even the FFP rules curtail that possibly.

For half of the league, mid table is the ceiling and the odd cup run chucked in for excitement.

I agree whole-heartedly! Sorry, yes we have been blessed with what we've won in the past and what I've been lucky enough to see and enjoy!

I guess that was my overall point, the league table is in fact probably highly, highly correlated to a wage table?!
