Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

To be fair 4 of Tadic's assists came in one game last year. Remains to be seen if he can deliver consistently but looks a good player for sure. I don't think Pele will have the same season though, looks pretty average in the cold light of day and he hardly set the world on fire at previous clubs. That could impact Mr T's assists!

He would have had more assists, for the same reasons you gave. He was always at the top of the charts with chances created.

    Repost:
Alright guys, sorry if this turns into an essay, but I find it easier to RMT when the manager explains himself a bit. Comments appreciated and suggestions won't be tossed aside. I'll start with my defense first

    Fabianski/Schmeical
~These were the two keepers I rotated last year and they have a knack for save points. I think they have good rotation this year but I'm not certain. Willing to look at suggestions but I don't want to spend more than 9.5 mil on GKs

    Azpi/Kos/Cedric/Huth/Saylor
~didn't feel like splashing the cash for Ivan and with Luis out the door(?) Azpi should get more playing time (or so I hope). Not sure if I should downgrade Kos to Mert but Kos got 4 more CBIs on average last year and with the new BPS system, it could be worth the extra .5. Open to opinions on a 5.0 defender. I currently have Cedric because of attacking returns and SOU could still get cleansheats. Huth I have over Morgan because the latter has played quite a bit over the summer, while Saylor could start but I'm open to other 4 mil potential starters

All fine would consider Targett instead of Saylor as he should play the first few games as Bertrand doesn't look like he'll be fit for the start of the season.

To be fair you probably won't play either Targett or Saylor just if they come of the bench it's nice to have some points.

Pants for Fabianski if someone explains why he's expected to get more points this year. I'd consider swapping Kasper for a 4.0 (Hennessey) to free up funds to use elsewhere.

I don't mind the defense, but not enough knowledge of Cedric to have an opinion.

If you are going to go with Azpi and Kos, I would consider downgrading Cedric to a 4.5 def and upgrade Saylor to a 4.5 too. Then rotate the three 4.5s. E.g. Bassong - Huth - Mings

      1. The_Socca_Philosopha
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 8 days ago

Thanks for the reply, that's a good idea. I'll have to look at the best 4.5 rotations. I'm not sold on Cedric so I just may do the rotation

    5. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 8 days ago

I usually ignore posts like these, but you were so polite... 😉

Keepers look perfect if you want to go that route. They rotate well.

      Azpi is ace.

Kos will be better than Kos on Mertz marginally, but as we should score lots, I imagine neither will be too good on the BAPS, so not worth the extra 0.5m, imo.

Cedric could be good, but many have reservations. He's a card magnet, Stekelenburg isn't great, Bertrand will miss the start of the season, and they are yet to sign a replacement centre back. Consensus is split on that one, I'm avoiding for now.

      Huth is good, imo.

Taylor wont play imo, but there are no 4m alternatives, atm. (Unless you count Targett who will play temporarily)

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I'm gonna wait a bit before deciding on Cedric. Saylor is just filler and if I need an extra .5 I'll drop Kos for Mert, unless there are any other 5.5-6 mil defenders you would recommend?

That's tricky because there are a lot of good players at 8.5 ... I have Ozil and Sterling at the moment, but Yaya, Caz and Depay are good options. I'd wait until it gets closer to the season to pick one. Hopefully a couple will emerge as better than the others

He played most of his games with Guardiola as a right winger, then as a left winger, as an AMF and then as a striker. So, if he signed with United(which won't happen) he should be considered and listed as a MF but they'll list him as a FW anyway.

A few things to consider -

Martina may well start over targett until Bertrand returns

Southampton have lost a few keys defensive players so they're cs potential probably isn't what it was...although the same was said last season

Begovic wouldn't have signed unless he was assured of at least the same amount of games that cech got last season imo

'Bad fixtures' only really have a significant impact on defensive players or double ups imo

    Again, just my opinion.

Begovic certainly wont play over Courtois in the PL or CL, and only maybe in the FA cup.

He's made the move to sit on the bench, frankly.

I'm having trouble with allowing Hazard out of my lineup and not having any City players. Is this worth it?

    Guzan / Ruddy
    Clyne / Azpi / O'Shea / Morgan / Baker
    Fab / Depay / Wallcott / Mane / Hendo
    Costa / Benteke / Deeney

    Run a 3/5/2?

Thoughts on this team would be appreciated.

    Ruddy, (Butland)
    Kosc, Azpi, Huth, (Richards, Targett)
    Hazard, Sterling, Walcott, Milner, (Anya)
    Rooney, Benteke, Adebayor

Adebayor is obviously only there if he joins Villa and although it hurts to put him in I think Sterling is going to do well at City.

      2.5/3(Sterling.........)

Got City vs Roma game on right now. Sterling looks like he could fit in well right off the bat with City. So, I can stamp my approval on that. I like Schmeichel over Ruddy, as Ruddy will probably struggle big time for CS returns, and Lei's fixtures are nice for a while from the get go.
