Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

      defence needs to be sorted.

targett is short term only as bertrand is not out for long, bellerin will compete with debuchy for game time so not nailed

To those starting with Rooney, what are your realistic expectations of him this year?

He scored 12 goals last season granted he did play as a mid for a portion of the year but there are other players that played as a midfielder the WHOLE season and ended with similar results.

Silva 12G and Chadli 11G are good examples.

Also, if you compare him to other '2nd tier' strikers, if you will, his total is just not that appealing to me.

    Berahino - 14 Diouf - 12 Ulloa - 11 Ings - 11

Do we really expect a significant increase in his output?

He played very, very deep in midfield. He was hardly used in the number 10 role or high on the wings like your examples.

I expect 15 from open play. 20 if he gets penalties back. And many more assists.

He'll score at least 20 goals if he is positioned as striker and remains fit for most of the season

He rarely got a consistent run of games as a lone striker last season. With a much stronger midfield and him being the focus point up top all season, I can only see points.

I expect Depay to emerge as far better value, but Rooney is the safer pick to start with, he should score a decent amount of goals as a 90 minute lone striker

Ok, I'm becoming quite attached to this team, almost a 10/10 I'm sure!

    Fabianski / Schmeichel
    Azpi - Koscielny - Mings/Matthers/Targett
    Hazard - Sterling - Walcott - Henderson (Or Milner/Chadli) - Anya
Benteke - Rooney - Deeney (Or Wilson)

    Few options to change things:

    A. Deeney > Sakho, Kos > Mertesaker, Fabinaski > 4.5.
    B. Azpi > Ivan, Kos > Mertesaker, Fabianski > 4.5.
    C. Leave as is.

I guess its sort of greedy thinking. If he can score that many at 5, imagine at 4 or 3.

I'd think about bringing in Rashid for Lyth, promote Buttler, possibly even open with him, we need that Hayden/ Trescothick type opener, Rashid would be good as Ali and Root have taken lots of wickets already, the Aussies will try to attack the spin and give their wickets away

OK, time for pairings and more specific questions 😀

              1. Sterling/6.5 (Ritchie or who else?) or Silva/Ki? Ki/6.5 would be a 4th mid. Basically, is Silva worth the 1.0 upgrade over Sterling?

              2. Depending on the 1st question, best def 5.5 or under?

I think Sterling at 9.0 will prove to be better value than Silva. Especially if he sorts his finishing out.

It's great to say 'he's only 20 so he'll get better at something at some point' but he's been playing regular first time football for a Premier League team for almost two seasons and he hasn't actually got better at anything yet.

He runs fast. Great. He can't finish. He has no game awareness. He doesn't pick a pass. He's not even that strong a dribbler like an Oxo was at his age.

So OK, he's 20. But that doesn't give him a licence to improve if he hasn't already begun showing signs of it. If he has those flaws in his game, why isn't he working on them in training? And if he is, why isn't he showing improvements in those areas? Until he does, he is just a massive 'if', until he's too old for people to hang on to 'potential'.

Perhaps so. But with Silva and Aguero as his supporting cast, I can't see him not scoring goals, regardless of how shite he is at finishing.

Not sure why I keep seeing the Rudd(y) rotation in so many teams. Something I don't know or why would people stake their entire GK line on a newly-promoted team with no hope of self-rotating?

I'm not sold on Chadli or Depay for now.

Highland - Think it's due to his good fixtures tbh and he didn't do bad last time Norwich were in the prem.

Chadli scored 11 last year, which is good for a 7.0 and if Depay can bring his stats over from Holland we're in for a treat.

Grab Hennessey then to replace Rudd. I just don't like putting all my defensive eggs in one basket, I guess.

Personally, I think Silva won't be worth his price tag and there are better options out there. I'm also not a fan of the 3-5-2, it's usually inferior to the 3-4-3. Perhaps downgrade Schneiderlin and upgrade Deeney.

Is A) Mane and Wilson definitely better than B) Henderson and J'Rod?

Will Mane really score more goals than J'Rod? J'Rod is doing well in pre season, had a great season in 13/14 and is cheaper than Mane.

I'd like to get rid of Wilson somehow, since I'm not keen on cheap strikers, but the only way I can think to improve him is to downgrade Mane, Sterling or Hazard.
