Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Okay, did some more Tinkering, some opinions would be terrific.

    Schmeichel
    Mertesacker Azpi Cedric
    Hendo Fab Chadli Payet Silva
    Rooney Costa

    Hennessey Ighalo Smith Baker.

Hennessey probably won't play but I'm happy with Schmeichel for the first few weeks at least, plus it freed up a bit of cash.
I think I like the idea of Hendo + Chadli and Rooney + Costa.
    Any thoughts?

With Ings, Origi and possibly Balo lurking, dont you think it's possible Benteke is eased in the first few GW's? New team, needing time to settle and all that..

Straight in my team if he does. On pens u think?

Crossing thing is a myth too.

"The Belgian striker has been assisted for twenty-eight league goals in his time with the Villans, and of those eight have been from crosses (though not including corners; we’ll cover those in a later section). This means that 29% of his strikes have required a ball in from wide areas.

In the Premier League over the same period, there have been 627 goals created via crosses, from a total of 2,042 net-bulgers that have been assisted; 31% in percentage terms, so a slightly higher proportion than Benteke."

Google: "The truth about Christian Benteke" for the full article. Great read.

I think the midfield looks a bit light-weight to be honest although all three of the cheaper picks could come off big time I'd prefer only two positions like that to manage. I think you could cut a bit from defence and maybe drop a 0.5 on Fabs to get two 8.5 mids in alongside Silva?

Ritchie, Cabaye (dependant on him at 10), maybe Ibe, Grealish, Arnautovic, Adam, Bolasie, Puncheon ......................

              Anyone not holding mids !

Neither are holding mids though, they're both playing in front of a holding mid.

Grealish is in a poor team, with no decent striker, not great fixtures, and managed just 1 assist in 800 minutes last season, and you think he's a better shout?

He's cheaper and he should improve on his first season. At least he's primarily an attacking player. Then he'll sign for Ireland 🙂

Who are they playing in front of ? Can or Lucas ? They're mainly defensive mids, not attacking mids. Better go for a more attacking player I reckon.

They were playing 433 in the pre-season games, and Allen and Lucas were taking turns as the defensive midfielder. (Can not yet back from the U21 tournament)

                      http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2015360-complete-analysis-of-jordan-hendersons-liverpool-role

I know both of them are well capable of being attacking forces, I just think a more usually attacking player is a better pick until we know the story. If I had to pick either to be the attacker it'd be Henderson.

I'd certainly advocate Hendo over Milner as well.

I'm sure they'll at least start 433, but if roles do change, it would be something to look at.

Hendo's main strengths are getting involved at both end, though.

Hendo is the focal point to everything that happens in the team. There'll be weeks where Milner outscored him but in pretty set on Hendo. Crazy amount of assists last season when he was the water carrier in the midfield for Gerrard. Now he's the main man

That's the thing. One will hold and one will go forward so neither might have great returns. Clyne could have better FPL stats for 5.5m, some CS and the odd assist and less frequent goal plus baps. Listening to Talksport now and they reckon Ibe will push hard for a spot. Benteke, Firmino, Coutinho, likely decent attacking returns.

I have always liked Oscar so bit biased, but I agree he could offer value way to Chelsea attack, and usually doesn't fall too far off others pace. Having him atm as my cover for team:
        De gea krul
Azpi Cedric bacuna ( distin morgan)

Rooney benteke adebayor (assuming villa move)

    RMT lads:

    Schmeichel/Schwarzer
    Azpi/ Merte/ Huth/ Bassong/ Kaboul
    Wally/ Haz/ Yaya/ Young/ Anya
    Rooney/ Benteke/ Pelle

Haven't seen much love for Young but he's sure to start no??

What about Panti tho? He's the king of save points and surely Sunderland are capable of more cleansheets? I'm not arguing tho, I'm caught in 2 minds myself. Huth is alot more of a gosl threat than Morgan then?

At Villa the entire strategy was based around Benteke and playing to his strengths. I'm probably missing something but I don't see why his fpl prospects should be so greatly improved by his moving.

Be interested to see which of the two teams below people think is better. One was the first team I did and the other is two weeks of solid ruddy tinkering:

    Courtois / Krul

    Azp / Morgan / Francis / Alderweireld / Targett

    Wally / Mata / Ritchie / Cabaye / Hendo

    Kane / Sakho / Aguero

    OR

    Fab / Hen

    Azp / Cresswell / Clyne / Huth / Targett

    Carzorla / Mata / Payet / Mahrez / Milner

    Benteke / Rodriguez / Aguero

Hi all. This is my first comment on here! All thoughts greatly appreciated.

1m in the bank. Not willing to spend it as I need it to get Aguero in for Rooney.

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Richards Cedric Huth Coates
    Hazard Silva Mane Puncheon Bentaleb
    Kane Rooney Wilson

Thinking of going Kane and Hazard to Costa and Fabregas but leaning towards keeping what I have.

      Same GK rotation as me!
Ivan over azpi, aston villa defence very suspect.

I originally had Ivan but can't fit him in now. Anya won't start. My problem with Costa/ Fabregas is that so many people have Hazard so it's saferto risk not falling behind and with his price he's tough to get in later

22.5? Tough - might need to be an uber-rotation for that amount and I think you'd lose more points than can be made back. 24.0 would be my minimum.

Here's why I'd stay clear of Benteke. For now...

We know that Benteke feeds off headers- he's a physical player- and he's said that himself. As soon as Sherwood came to the fold, Benteke went from 2 goals in 16 games to 11 goals in 13. Sherwood knew where his strengths lay- in fact Benteke won more aerial duels than anyone in the country last year.

By contrast, last year, Liverpool attempted fewer open play cross than anyone else in the league (409). We know that Rodgers likes a fluid "on the ground" style of play, and we've seen the problems that that caused for Andy Carroll. Liverpool simply didn't play to his strengths.

What's more, Benteke had the worst passing accuracy of any outfield player at either Liverpool OR Villa...that's 39th out of 39 players. Just to add more doubt, add in some extra details such as the number of striking options that Liverpool have (Sturridge, Lambert, Balotelli, Origi, Borini) that can eat into his time as well as the fact that he is injury prone.

To be a success at Liverpool either Liverpool's style has to change OR Benteke will have to.

You assume too much there Aurora.

Benteke has more to his game than getting on the end of crosses.

Pol didn't have so many open play crosses because they had no-one to receive them.
