Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

    Hi!

    RMT please 🙂

    Courtois (Hennessey)
Mertesacker - Huth - Bassong (Coates, STaylor)
Hazard - Mata - Sterling - Özil (Wanyama)
    Rooney - Giroud - Wilson

    0,5 ITB and Rooney - > Aguero on GW 3 or 4

How are you affording Rooney --> Aguero?

Not sure you need Mata and Rooney as well as Giroud and Ozil (especially if Walcott starts up front on Sunday).

Maybe Mata --> Milner and Giroud --> Kane?

      Just some thoughts.

        Rooney to aguero looks doable
Haz to fab? Sterling to 6.5 mid

    Cech - Rudd
    Azpi - Cedric - O'Shea - Huth - Mings
    Hazard - Walcott - Sterling - Henderson - Wanyama
    Rooney - Lukaku - Sakho

Lukaku ➡ Pelle after GW1 in my plans.

      I like it.

Defence is similar to mine, as is the midfield.

I don't like planning to transfer someone out in GW 1 as I like to try and get on a band wagon for a price increase but I don't think you need any drastic changes.

    Gonna repost this

Haven't been able to draft a team cos I am confused as hell
what's every one's take on benteke? he hasn't played a single minute in preseason and he might take a while to settle

is any1 else tempted by mane Cedric and pelle combo?

what do u think of giroud? the thing is he is a donkey and very inconsistent but if he hits the ground running, he could be explosive and maybe go on a scoring streak like last season and of course his bandwagon would come to an end when he decides to stop using his brain

here is what I am thinking

    ** **
    azpi Cedric ** ** **

    haz wally mane sterling. **

    sakho. ** Rooney/Kane

if any1 can help me fill in d blanks, I would appreciate. confused

Butland/Ruddy GK combo seems to be a popular pick.

Cedric, Mane, Pelle have great fixtures. Not sure I'd put all my eggs in one basket early on though. Just one of Mane/Pelle for me (or Tadic).

Benteke wouldn't be in my team from the start. I think Milner and Henderson are a better Liverpool option until we see what Brendan does with his 19 strikers.

Giroud is a decent goal scorer but not a consistent FPL player. I'd back Arsenal's midfield (though who is a bit of a lottery). Giroud might not even start up front. Watch him on Sunday to decide.

      Sinclair as missing cheap midfielder?

Can you afford Rooney AND Kane?

3 decent opening fixtures from an attacking perspective and with a decent supply behind him he could be a bargain at 6.0m.

      Don't like the keepers particularly.

      Defence is fine.

Don't think you need Giroud up front. Can you afford Kane? Then Chadli -> Milner/Henderson so as not to overload on one team?

Any thoughts on this team guys:

    Krul Guzan
    Azpi Clyne Huth Mings Whittaker
    Haz Sterling Ozil Sinclair Wanyama
    Rooney Giroud Wilson

    £2.5m ITB for Aguero

Not sure on the keeper combo?

    Any better options than Wilson?

I would downgrade Giroud to Pelle/Benteke, then upgrade Clyne to Koscielny and/or try to upgrade Sinclair. Instead of Krul/Guzan I would consider Ruddy/Butland or Pantilimon or Fabianski + a 4m.

I would only go for one of Sinclair and Wanyama. Both should be choices for a 5th mid and to include both weakens your midfield.

Especially when you have a cheap forward (Wilson) as well.

Just seen Paddy Power doing special offee on top goalscorer bets for PL.
Bet £20 on a top goalscorer (or £10 each way) and get a £2 free bet every time they score.

Looks worth a punt I think. If you bet someone who gets 10 goals, the £20 stake is repaid in free bets. Or, someone who gets 20 goals gets you £40 free bets. And you still have a chance to win the initial bet.

    So ......

    Aguero 3/1
    Costa 11/2
    Rooney 11/1 (win or e/w)
    Kane 14/1 (win or e/w)
    Benteke 14/1 (e/w)

Which is smartest bet considering all factors such as likilihood to win, free bets returned and odds above?

Low odds though. Im between him and kane e/w.
Kane e/w has £45 back if he places top 3.
        And £195 for the win.
Then the added protection of £2 returns.
Aguero £3/1 is £80 for the win though he does guarantee about 20 goals

    Panti (4.0)
    Ivanovic Koscielny Bassong Francis (Ogbonna)
Sterling Walcott Hazard (C) Mane (Wanyama)
    Wilson Deeney Costa

Thoughts? Fairly happy with it - assuming Costa's injury gets cleared

Thoughts on my team? What improvements should be made?

    Butland - Ruddy
    Clyne - Azpi - Cedric - Mings - Targett
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Ritchie - Johnson(Norwich)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

Happy with keepers and strikers. Help with defense and midfield? Got £0 ITB.

Looks good to me mate. Only thing I would say is perhaps consider Johnson -> 4.5m mid, and then do Clyne -> Koscielny and Targett -> 4.5m def

Had a dream that Walcott and Sakho would be major dissapointments in my team.. What to do, what to do.

To Luke Shaw or not to Luke Shaw? Was quite set on him as he appears nailed for now and carries a good attacking threat but beginning to doubt it:

    a) Stick
    b) Switch for Mert
    c) Downgrade to Cedric/Williams and save 0.5

    Why doesn't anyone like Moreno?

    Nailed and cheaper than Clyne

Lpool have nice home fixs and then rotate him for dodgy aways.

If Coloccini isn't fit or leaves the club, who will replace him?

What's people's thoughts on Bony? Will he play much and if so, will he get the goals. I'm assuming he's second choice striker ahead of Dzeko

He is 2nd choice but i still don't think he will get much minutes, especially when Aguero is back. No point in having someone in your team who won't play all that much.

Why is no one considering Mignolet + 4.0 keeper? Or perhaps uniteds romero + 4.0? Same price as a 4.5 combo

Currently Romero is backup to DDG. The moment DDG leaves there'll be an almighty bandwagon.

Not for me though, until United get a decent Dc or 2.

Migs has dodgy opening fixtures (Ars, Man U away)

I just compiled all of the data from every single hot topic and article from the last 2 months to form the best FPL squad.

Conclusion is basically use every formation and also chose every player possible.

What you need at the back is 3 rotating 4.5 chosen from the best rotating teams which is basically whichever 3 teams you want to choose from but at the same time you need to make sure you choose the players with the best value so don't choose 4.5 defenders they should also be the most transferred in players so that you gain team value so that in the end you can actually afford to have all the premium defenders but don't get those ones just go with Ivanovic and 5 5 5 4.5
