With the start of the 2015/16 season only a few days away, we’ve formulated our initial Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six rounds of fixtures. Sunderland’s number one leads the way, though the Saints and Leicester are in hot pursuit in light of the opening schedule.

After emerging as one of the strongest budget goalkeepers last season, and with an obliging looking start to the new campaign (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou), Costel Pantilimon stands at the summit of our initial keeper rankings. The Sunderland stopper will set us back 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, having registered four shut-outs in eight appearances under Dick Advocaat last season, the duel potential of returns from save points and clean sheets earns the Romania international the top spot. The changes to the BPS, which will boost Pantilimon’s potential due to saves, also plays a part in our thinking, bearing in mind he averaged 4.4 points per appearance last season.

Despite plenty of changes in personnel, the Southampton defence has been one of the strongest units in the Premier League in recent times, keeping 15 clean sheets in each of the last two seasons. With Fraser Forster out with a long-term knee injury, Dutch international Maarten Stekelenburg will be the first-choice for the Saints, and while he may not possess the quality of the former Celtic keeper, his 5.0 price tag offers us a relatively budget friendly route into the Southampton backline, while the early schedule (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN) is pretty favourable.

Like with Pantilimon, Kasper Schmeichel enters this season having ended last term strongly, keeping five clean sheets in his final seven outings. Unlike the Black Cats keeper, however, Schmeichel will be playing for a new manager this season, with Claudio Ranieri taking the reigns at the King Power Stadium. Uncertainty over how that will effect the Foxes has slightly dampened enthusiasm for Leicester assets as we formulate our 15-man squads, but the friendly opening schedule (SUN, whm, TOT, bou, AVL, sto) and the Dane’s price tag of 4.5 mean he should still attract plenty of suitors. For anyone looking for a rotation partner for Schmeichel, Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski offers a strong choice.

Talking of goalkeepers that rotate well, Norwich’s John Ruddy and Stoke’s Jack Butland look strong contenders for the best 9.0 pairing to start the season. The duo would provide a raft of favourable fixtures (CPL, sun, nor, WBA, BOU, LEI, BOU, LEI, new, WAT) over the opening 10 Gameweeks, although ongoing concerns over Ryan Shawcross’ back injury should be monitored given his importance to the Stoke rearguard. Again, the BPS changes play a part here – Ruddy sat third for saves (128) in his previous season (2013/14) in the top-flight.

Now the clear first choice at Villa Park following Shay Given’s move to Stoke, Brad Guzan (4.5) gets the nod for a place on our Watchlist thanks to Villa’s generous looking opening fixtures (bou, MUN, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). The Villans did concede 2.1 goals per match under the attack-minded Tim Sherwood, however, although the additions of left-back Jordan Amavi and Micah Richards in particular could see an improved defensive showing from Villa this season. Certainly, Guzan – who averaged 3.3 points per appearance last year – can be expected to be kept busy between the sticks.

According to our Season Ticker, Bournemouth have the most favourable fixtures (AVL, liv, whm, LEI, nor, SUN) over the first six Gameweeks, bringing the 4.5-priced Artur Boruc into our thoughts. The Cherries kept 19 shout-outs, more than any other side, as they won the Championship last season, and the Poland international will know what it’s all about in the top-flight, having made 49 Premier League appearances for Southampton. Available at 4.5 in FPL, Boruc could be combined in a rotation pairing with Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who comes in at the same price. The former Tottenham keeper is slightly lower in our rankings because of the Hornets tougher start, but the combination would provide these (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) home matches over the opening eight Gameweeks. While the two should rack up plenty of save points, it could be a risk to carry goalkeepers from two newly promoted sides, given the gulf in class between the two divisions.

Petr Cech lands slightly lower than perhaps many would expect in our opening rankings, but the difficult fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea in the first six are heavily factored in. Valued at 5.5, he is likely to be right up there when it comes to the highest scoring keepers in FPL this term, and if the Gunners’ pre-season is anything to go by, Cech’s arrival has afforded his defence an air of calm, strengthening their chances of improving upon last year’s 13 shut-outs.

With West Ham’s early fixtures very friendly at home (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) and pretty treacherous on the road (ars, liv, mci), Adrian (5.0) looks a prime contender for a rotation pairing, bearing in mind the Hammers managed two clean sheets on their travels last season. The aforementioned Schmeichel and Guzan look the most suitable candidates, with either combination setting us back 9.5 in FPL. West Ham’s involvement in the qualifying stages of the Europa League could be a slight concern for their defensive prospects, should Slaven Bilic look to rotate.

Manchester City are actually the highest placed of last season’s top four on our ticker for the opening six Gameweeks (wba, CHE, eve, WAT, cpl, WHM), but with so much value among the goalkeepers, the 5.5-priced Joe Hart only finds a place towards the bottom of our rankings. The England international was awarded the Golden Glove award last year after he kept 14 clean sheets, but with injuries or Copa America duties placing question marks over so many of City’s regulars, his stock at this point isn’t particularly high right now.

Chelsea’s start to the season involves head-to-heads with two of their main rivals for the title (mci, ARS), so Thibaut Courtois is another big name who finds himself well down our rankings. The other four fixtures (SWA, wba, CPL, eve) are against sides likely to be strong mid-table teams, and bearing in mind the attacking potential of the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, and the strong value of Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0), the 5.5-valued Belgian may not be the best route into the champions’ backline.

Lescott could easily be Williams/Jenko but I prefer WBA's clean sheet potential. Gomez will start the season for Pool and has some nice rotation with Huth for a few weeks

Hi lads, I was wondering why everybody loves Huth here.

Is it because of Ranieri ?

I noticed he didn't play a lot last year (1200 min)
Was his presence correlated with leicester clean sheets ?

    1. Hammers Select

      He transferred clubs last yr.

When he joined Leicester he was one of the most dangerous players they had at corners and he was one of the reasons they stayed up.

I think he's terrific. Very talented player, shocked at the attitude of certain folk regarding him on here, has been billed as a waste of money or a one dimensional player that only feeds off crosses which is utter bollocks.

      1. Demí
        11 years, 3 months ago

To be fair, some Liverpool fans did think that too and didn't initially want him. I guess they've been convinced other wise. I do recall Champ being genuinly excited about it though, and happy with being linked to him at first

Some Liverpool fans were included in my umbrella term of "certain folk" 😉 Aye, Champ wanted him from the outset, and I think rightly so. Maybe I'll be shown to be in the wrong of course, happens lots 😛 , but I'm certain a lot of his goals weren't just from crosses.

          1. 50 Shades Oshea

ye big fan of tekkers, guranted minutes and helps with lallana/ibe coutinho etc issue on whos going to start. you going him straight away or waiting? personally waiting a couple of weeks as wasn't very impressed with preseason from us as a team... i know its different when the season kicks off...

            1. Somalion
              11 years, 3 months ago

I don't mind a punt at the start with him to be honest. Stoke's mantra is different now, they attack much more so I feel Pool could try and hit them as well. An open game is what I expect, but then I may change my mind 🙂

              1. 50 Shades Oshea
                11 years, 3 months ago

ye this is very true, was tempted to go lukaku in week1 and then bring tekkers in 2 or just go with pelle for the first couple of weeks, but planning transfers always dangerous... but i do agree, some good advice, do you think tekkers will start? rodgers said he was couple weeks behind the rest...

      2. Demí
        11 years, 3 months ago

Totally agree with you btw. Also read people calling him injury prone because of that 1 injury which is ridiculous

        1. Somalion
          11 years, 3 months ago

Oh lawd the injury proneness. I think the season before he missed maybe 2 games with an ankle issue and 3 with a knee problem, but a ruptured tendon can happen to anyone. Before then, even in the Belgian Leagues, he was pretty solid, don't recall much injury at all!

Some of the best strikers get called offside lots, all about taking the risk and making the run. I never mind that.

I see him as the spearhead of a fairly creative Pool attack, so I can't bring myself to look by him!

At his best he showed he could bang them in for fun for a mid-lower table team. Theoretically with some of the pool talent feeding him he'll grab goals.

Ive finally been convinced by Rutland. Please RMT:

    Ruddy - Butland
    Azpilicueta - Mertesacker - Cedric - Huth - Francis
    Hazard - Walcott - Cazorla/Ozil - Ritchie - Mahrez
    Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

Although Mahrez is a very strong fifth mid, I felt id rather have Ritchie and Mahrez than a 7.0 +4.5 as it allows me to rotate them with Sakho for fixtures for the first few weeks effectively. I will then downgrade the weaker of the 2 and Walcott in order to fund Kun

  20. nunuthehoover
    11 years, 3 months ago

Apologies for repost, posted at the end of last article with no reply

    Current team is

    Ruddy - Rudd

    Cedric - Huth - Azpi - Kosc - Richards

    Ozil - Hazard - Depay - Ritchie - Mahrez

    Pelle - Rooney - Sakho

    0.5 ITB

Currently don't like my keepers, not sure who is best here so just jumped on the bandwagon. Mings for Richards?

Thinking of swapping pelle for tekkers. Not sure how i'm going to get aguero in if rooney + midfield fire the first few weeks.

I can hardly see all of MU firing at the same time.

Even if I already have Rooney?

Is Depay sure to start? Was LvG talking about him needing to "adjust" or something? Young could be a rotation threat at the start of the year..

Well I'd say both ramsey and ozil are better options than him imo.

    5. Somalion
      11 years, 3 months ago

Might depend on the rest of the team IM.

Ozil if you fancy a double up, very hard to pick one of Mata or Depay, in particular with Pedro possibly on the way, YYT if you fancy City. I don't believe in coverage, but I tend to like to have one attacker from all of the top 5 or 6 (though no Spurs at the moment).

      1. Irish Madridista ⭐
        11 years, 3 months ago

I really like the idea of a double up with Ozil / Ramsey but with Ozil potentially being pushed out on the left and Ramsey not even sure of a regular role with everyone fit, I'm not as sure.

Mata / Depay, could be perfect, but with Rooney already in (at least until Aguero is fit) I don't know how smart it is to double up on a rotation-fuelled attack. LvG has so many options he could play in so many different positions, it's impossible to tell.

Yaya could be a bargain, but is he still the same player he was 2 years ago?

        8.5 - Caz - Mane - Chadli - Wanyama
        Benteke - Kane - Rooney

Alternatively, the 8.5 could become Hazard and Benteke drops to C.Wilson..

        1. Somalion
          11 years, 3 months ago

          Hmm.

The forward line is very strong. Any way at all you can find 0.5 anywhere? Because Fabregas would complete the puzzle I think...

If I drop Koscielny to Mertesacker, or Coates to Targett.

Double Chelsea attack when they have City and Pulis in their first 3 though? I may just have been scared by their blank in the Community Shield 😛

Sorry, not sure why I thought it would be double Chelsea attack, on reflection with this new evidence, I like it! 😀

              Mertesacker it is 🙂

Im finally there. Havent changed it in 24 hours so i must be close.

    Buttland

    Cedric / Francis / Huth / Oshea / Targett
    Hazard / Ozil / Walcott / Sterling / Ritchie
    Defoe / Pelle / Rooney

0.5ITB - I feel like I need some Arsenal cover at the back....so maybe upgrade Cedric to Mert. I need the 0.5 to do Rooney > Aguero & either Walcott/Sterling to 7.0 Bandwagon

    Thoughts?

I would downgrade Ritchie, upgrade Defoe and Targett, and change Ozil to Cazorla.

      1. Lebowski85
        11 years, 3 months ago

I think Defoe could be an early gem. Targett could well become Gomez if he starts GW1. I'll take Ozil over Cazorla this year I think

    Cech (Hennessey)
Cedric - Azpi - Huth (Coates, STaylor)
Hazard - Walcott - Mane - Sterling (Wanyama)
    Lukaku - Rooney - Wilson

    Still considering these though...

    A) Cech & Coates
    B) Ruddy & Mertesacker

    and

    A) Lukaku for GW1 and Benteke GW2
    B) Benteke from GW1

    On GW3 or 4 I'll do Walcott/Sterling -> ~7 or Hazard -> Fabregas to get Aguero

Who does everyone think is the best striker at £6m or less? Ive gone with Defoe at the moment. Sunderland have got some nice opening fixtures and hes nailed on to start

Callum Wilson for me. If it weren't for terrible opening fixtures I'd go for Lambert
