Chelsea and Palace fall to defeat in their final summer friendlies, with Diego Costa still doubtful for the Blues’ home encounter with Swansea this weekend. Elsewhere, Nacer Chadli nets as Tottenham prepare for their trip to Old Trafford with a victory over AC Milan. Here’s the friendlies round-up over the last few days of pre-season…

Chelsea 0  Fiorentina 1

Jose Mourinho benched the majority of his first XI last night, with Asmir Begovic, Bertrand Traore, Kurt Zouma, John Terry and youngster Ola Aina forming the back five. John Obi Mikel and Ruben Loftus-Cheek occupied the double pivot, while Juan Cuadrado, Oscar and Victor Moses provided the service for Radamel Falcao. The remainder of Chelsea’s first-teamers were subbed on at the break or 60-minute mark.

Moses was withdrawn from the field of play after taking a knock to the eye, but Mourinho reported that he’ll be fit for the weekend. The Portuguese boss admitted that Diego Costa remains touch-and-go for the visit of Swansea City, before praising Falcao’s debut display for the Blues:

“I won’t risk my reputation again. You asked me before last weekend and I told you he (Costa) was ready to play. He wasn’t. I don’t know. I don’t risk saying yes, and I don’t risk saying no. On Friday at the next press conference I think I will tell you again that I don’t know… He (Falcao) is very good for the situation – Copa America, holidays, one week of training sessions, not the three weeks the others have had, and minutes in different matches. Today I took him off in his best moment of the game. I am very happy with his evolution.’”

Real Madrid 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0

Gareth Bale netted against his former employers as Spurs struggled to conjure up many clear-cut chances at the Allianz Arena. Erik Lamela made his first outing since returning late for pre-season duty, while 18-year-old summer signing Dele Alli excelled in central midfield alongside Eric Dier.

Mauricio Pochettino named a back five of Michel Vorm, Danny Rose, Kevin Wimmer, Toby Alderweirdeld and Kyle Walker, with Alli and Dier shielding the back four in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. A trio of Christian Eriksen (left wing), Erik Lamela (number ten) and Mousa Dembele (right wing) endeavoured to support lone striker Harry Kane. Nacer Chadli, Jan Vertonghen and Nabil Bentaleb entered the fray at half time.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 AC Milan 0

Spurs’ second-string XI comfortably dispatched of a lacklustre Milan outfit, with Nacer Chadli and Tom Carroll gracing the scoresheet. The former opened the scoring with a sumptuous curling strike from just outside the box, while the latter produced a neat, close-range finish that crept just inside the upright following a clever corner routine. Kieran Trippier served up the assist for Carroll and was named as the Man of the Match, having defended diligently and offered a threat with his accurate crossing.

Tottenham U21 keeper Luke McGee earned a start behind a back line of Trippier, Federico Fazio, Vertonghen and Ben Davies. Bentaleb and Dier filled the defensive midfield berths, while Carroll (number ten), Joshua Onomah and Chadli formed the trio behind makeshift lone striker, Lamela.

Hugo Lloris recovered from a wrist fracture to come on as a substitute in the 55th minute, suggesting that he’s primed for a start against Manchester United on Saturday. Elsewhere, Ryan Mason clocked a second-half cameo on his return from the treatment room.

With Roberto Soldado missing out through a back problem and Emmanuel Adebayor set for the exit door, Pochettino was forced to field Chadli as the lone striker role yesterday, rather than play the Belgian in his XI against Real Madrid the day before. The Spurs boss admitted he’s keen to add to his options up top and confirmed the rested Harry Kane will be fit for Old Trafford:

“It is true we have Harry and maybe we need to bring another striker in. But I am not worried about Harry. He came back after the Euros [Under-21 Championships] late in his preparations but I am not worried. He is ready to compete on Saturday against Manchester United.”

Dagenham and Redbridge 1 Crystal Palace 0

Conor Wickham made his Eagles bow as the target man in a 4-3-3 set-up, with Patrick Bamford and Frazier Campbell lining up either side of the former Sunderland frontman. Campbell limped off in the first half gripping his hamstring and looks set for a spell on the sidelines.

Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland and Chung-yong Lee – who played out of position in a central midfield berth – were the other experienced heads among a team largely comprised of developmental team members.

    Hi,

    any thoughts on this.

    Courtois (Hennessey)

Azpi - Koscielny - Huth ( Clyne, Yoshida)

Hazard - Özil - Chamberlain - Mane (Ki)

    Deeney - Benteke - Rooney

Is it a good or a bad idea to have a double Arsenal midfield? Ox seems to be a nailed on starter until Sanchez is back... Also performed well and scored in the CS

          I think i'll do Deeney - Sakho, Ki -> 4,5.. Who's the best 4,5 mid available?

Risky Ox- I think you need to downgrade Courtois to a 4.5 e.g. Butland/Ruddy, downgrade Ki to Sinclair and upgrade Ox to Chadli (would have said Hendo/Milner but you have Benteke)

Also downgrade Yoshida to 4.0 e.g. sailor and upgrade Hennessey to a 4.5 rotation GK

First full season taking this seriously, any thoughts would be appreciated!

    Boruc (Mccarthy)
    Dave, Bellerin, Cedric, (taylor), (coates)
    Hazard, walcott, sterling, depay (anya)
    Jerome, Lukaku,(c), Rooney

Lukaku becomes benteke in week 2.

    Cheers!

Hey mate - tinkered with 3/4 spots in the team! The rest is as you were:

          Mignolet / Ruddy

          Azpilicueta / Koscielny / Fonte / Richards / Francis

          Hazard / Sterling / Ozil / Ritchie / Fletcher

because i will likely revert to a 4.5 as my 5th mid after using my wildcard; might as well stack the attack pre wildcard and use it then.

the other chips lend themselves to DGWs but i think AOA could be handy in GW1

                    it's a gamble.

also, there are so many known ins coming in gw2 (sanchez, aguero etc), plus some unknown bandwagons. more than previous years, I feel a GW2 wildcard is a decent option.

                    what do you think?

the other two chips have more bang for the buck. AOA is a poor cousin (just playing 5th mid over 3rd def).

See you're rooting for vardy. he could be a very nice pick.

I've not even paid much attention to how Sunderland have set up so far. Somewhere in the CM of course.

    A) Koscielny, Walcott, Mane

    OR

    B) Mertesacker, Ozil, Sterling?

      A

The Walcott, Ozil, Sterling internal debate is bloody annoying. Currently I have Koscienly, Ozil, Sterling and Mane, but guess it depends on our teams.

      So I'm going...B

Current team is below if that helps...

        Butland, Adrian
        Kosc, Azpi, Cedric, Francis, Huth
        Hazard, Walcott, Mane, Ritchie, 4.5m
        Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

So if I go A, then no City cover, and if I go B, then no Soton attackers...

Yeah it's a tough one. Kosc definitely the better pick that Merte, but I'm not confident in going Walcott over Ozil (or the other way around), or Mane over Sterling...

A fit mirallas should start gw1 right? Thinking of getting him in as a differential for gw1 and transferring him out for milner in gw2.

Beware of planning transfers - they rarely work out at the start unless the rest of your team is completely nailed.

I have seen teams with Depay, Chadli, Tekkers, Wally all in one. It could be great or horrible. Definitely need 3 playing benchers to accomodate.

This year, transfers can be done 1 hour before the start of the first game. What's the point in that?

"I hope lukaku plays", transfer deadline is reached, 1 minute later "Lukaku is on the bench"

Yeah it's stupid. I guess they needed to do something considering that there are Friday night games though... But you're right, it makes no difference at all to knowing the line-ups

Damn, I thought it'd mean we get to see the lineups just before we confirm our teams :/

We may get early lineups, but it will be so close trying to see them and make changes at the same time.

Yeah, unless you stalk the team's page its likely you'll just miss out on confirming the transfer. Especially if servers slow.

M'vila was class on FM. May help to provide some steal and therefore better chance of cleanies for Sunderland if he's fit.

Less long shots for Pants to save though possibly...

Good deal if they can keep him on a tight leash, there's a reason why players like him end up at clubs like Sunderland at a relatively young age.

Hey guys, any thoughts on this?

    Stekelenburg (Schwarzer)

Cedric, Azpi, O'shea (Baker, steven taylor)

    Haz, Depay, Sterling, Cazorla (Bentaleb)

    Rooney, Berahino, Benteke

Baker and Saylor as your back-up is such a big risk. It'll prob lead to early hits, but team looks strong. I'd be tempted to downgrade Sterling to an 8.5 to fix that problem though.

    Here we go!

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Merte - Azpi - (Huth - Francis) - 4.0
    Özil/Caz - Haz - Mané - Sterling - (Wanya)
    Benteke - Roo - Sakho

    When Kun fit:

    Mané - Sterl - Benteke - Roo - Sakho
    -->
    Pelle - Kun - Hendo - Depay - Wilson/Deeney

    Thoughts?
    Cheers
