Last season Tottenham’s Harry Kane, QPR’s Charlie Austin and Burnley’s Danny Ings made a mockery of their lowly price tags to produce the kind of Fantasy returns expected of premium priced forwards. This season Watford’s Troy Deeney and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson are amongst the latest crop of cut price forwards looking to make their mark on the Premier League.

With this in mind we ask the Burning Question: Can the budget strikers step up again this season?

Jonty says…
For every Charlie Austin there is a Sylvan Ebanks Blake, making the search for a quality budget striker a tricky task each year. While QPR’s cut price striker bagged 18 goals in his first Premier League season, the similarly priced Ebanks Blake managed just two goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2009 in the Premier League, the year after his impressive 25 Championship goals helped win them promotion.

The easy answer to whether one or two budget strikers can step up is yes. There will always be a Charlie Austin each season to emerge either with an existing Premier League side or a promoted side. Bojan Krjic could easily be that man for Stoke, Troy Deeney also holds promise for Watford. But my advice to those looking to draft in either of these or Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is brace yourself for disappointment and be prepared to ditch them quickly if they let you down. And please, please, please be aware that Harry Kane’s heroics last season on a budget were a one off that is unlikely ever to be repeated.

D1sable says…
Last season was certainly a rarity in terms of budget strikers, with Danny Ings, Charlie Austin, Harry Kane surpassing most expectations. But we have seen similar trends before.

Of the current crop West Ham’s Diafra Sakho has the platform to hit the ground running and so is an early contender – he has good fixtures and will likely be a lone frontman for a more attack minded West Ham this time around. Given he managed nine goals last term in an injury ravaged season there is clear potential.

Troy Deeney is the other option that stands out to me, he has the hint of a Charlie Austin about him. He’s nailed on, takes penalties, has a similar physique and has scored goals wherever he’s been. Surely Watford will be relying on him continuing that trend to stay in the league and I expect a fair few Fantasy managers will be too.

I certainly envisage both these options finding their way into my team at some point in the season, for better or worse.

Applebonkers says…
I don’t really envisage any real new budget stars this season, those who will have remarkable bursts like Sakho’s start, Kane’s emergence or Austin’s goal every other game record. Instead I think it will be the season of the ‘second-seasons.’ For example how the likes of Sakho, Diouf, Vardy, Berahino, Bojan and yes even Brown Ideye can push on.

I love Deeney, he’s come an awful long way since once going 30 matches without a goal when he first joined, but also don’t think he has too much left in him in terms of progression. On top of that I don’t think he’ll enjoy as much freedom under the new manager as he’s been used to for a few seasons now. This is what interests me more about Callum Wilson, he has more progression left in him and has maintained the same ultra-positive manager as last season.

Surprises come every season, one of the beauties of this game, but it’s the second season strikers I’m backing to fly the flag this time around.

Andy says…
As a romantic Fantasy Manager at heart I certainly hope that they can.

Everyone is going to have an Eden Hazard or [insert super popular high scoring player] in their Fantasy team and revel in their goals only to realise the gains you made by selecting them are slim to naught.

In the past, being able to pick Andy Carroll at Newcastle for a bag of rope, Darren Bent for a shilling and, more recently, Harry Kane emerging out of nowhere as a Fantasy heavyweight for the price of a button and a piece of string is always so much more exciting and rewarding.

I certainly hope we’ll have options once again score mountains from molehill level prices. Even if they’re at Leonardo Ulloa and not Charlie Austin levels then a relatively cheap striker -be it Diafra Sakho, Troy Deeney or the aforementioned Ulloa – can be a wonderful member of any squad if managed correctly.

Fantasy Managers will just need to be patient and measure their expectations. If you pick Bojan for your Fantasy team he’s not going to score as many goals or points as Diego Costa or Sergio Aguero, plain and simple. He could however net you a handy amount of goals for a relatively tidy sum. Or do nothing. These players could definitely do nothing.

Given that I’m looking like starting my Fantasy season off with a £4.5m bargain basement man as well as another modest striking option I’ll be hoping the budget strikers can step up and keep me afloat.

Mark says…
As Jonty says above, I think we can rule out another Harry Kane scenario. Despite that, the optimist in me (he’s in there somewhere) looks at Callum Wilson and sees a 12-15 goal return. I’m certainly backing him over Troy Deeney, mainly because I think the outlook of both Bournemouth and Watford will vary so much.

While I expect Deeney to provide the goal-getting influence for Quique Sánchez Flores’ side, I worry that they will start slowly and follow the traditional path for a promoted side – keep things tight and try to nick something on the break.

I’m hoping Eddie Howe remains consistent and continues to put out a Bournemouth side that looks to compete with the big boys in terms of possession and values scoring goals and winning matches above survival instincts. If that’s the case, Wilson could emerge as the key budget option up top.

Elsewhere we could see Rickie Lambert or even Emmanuel Adebayor tempt investment, although I’m also holding out hope that Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa step up under Claudio Ranieri. As for Bojan – yes, he has the quality but I question whether he’s a 10-goal striker or robust enough to stand up to a 35+ match campaign.

For me, I’m pinning hopes on Bournemouth and Wilson but expecting to be forced to hunt out Diafra Sakho and maybe Bafe Gomis in the 6.5+ market.

I might rather have Mahrez at 5.5 but thats just my opinion
I think Rooney might justify having a 4th mid that cheap
Not sure if an expensive GK is honestly worth it, but it certainly wont hurt

Thanks, good tips. I normally don't like expensive keepers but even the expensive ones are fairly cheap this year and Courtois is the cheapest route into the Chelsea defense. Ki is clearly the weak point, I'm considering downgrading Mertesacker in order to upgrade him.

Alright it seems to have finally died down so I think i'll finally get my team out there hopefully for one last RMT:

    Schmeichel (Hennessey)
    Azpilicueta Cedric Huth (Muniesa Oxford)
    Hazard Depay Ozil Wijnaldum (Westwood)
    Sakho Pelle Aguero

    Goalkeeper Reasoning:
I didnt want to spend too much on my keepers so I went with a 4.5 I was confident in and Schmeichel's in a decent defense with good fixtures so I feel fine sending him out there each week. Willing to gamble on Hennessey over McCarthy as my 4.0 for the time being too, think he's more nailed to play with Speroni out than Alex and maybe he'll notch a price rise or hopefully two in that time

    Defender Reasoning:
Azpi and Cedric will be starting each and every week for my side and im confident in that. I trust Chelsea defense above all and with Koeman's ability to set up a defense and Southampton's fixtures I can see some cleansheets early doors for them. The last defender slot in the 3 at the back will go down to a rotation of Muniesa and Huth. Muniesa should definitely be nailed due to Shawcross' injury and Huth I view as the most desirable 4.5, and on top of that they rotate fixtures well! You might say, Oh gosh, double Leicester defense, what on Earth is he doing here? Well with Huth i'm only getting the promising fixtures on the schedule and with Schmeichel i'm getting someone capable of racking up the save points. Oxford is in there to not lose value like i'm afraid Targett or Saylor will and I think he could earn a first team place for WHU sooner or later.

    Midfield Reasoning:
Hazard is borderline essential so that's that. Depay, a bit of a risk but I expect him to hit the ground running playing way up the pitch in such a prolific side as a bulky #7. Ozil just edges the other Arsenal mids for me, it's his first year starting the prem with a full pre-season under his belt and I think that could make all the difference with him in the whole in an obviously attacking team. Wijnaldum is clearly my team's big punt. Here's why i've got him: So surely someone needs to score for Newcastle, and why won't it be their record signing? Actually forget wont, i think it definitely will be. He's looked sharp (by preseason standards) in preseason, notching in 2 straight matches. In preseason and in the past he's shown he could be on some set pieces and i'm half hoping half thinking he could even be on pens, I've followed him as someone half-dutch in eredivisie for PSV and especially for the NT and I think despite some tough fixtures early on, he'll be in the points. I can't see Newcastle realistically never scoring, so hey, someone's gotta do it. Might as well be someone oozing with class potentially. I can still be convinced on Westwood if someone wants to - but if he's on free-kicks, is nailed then thats maybe good enough for me at that price?

    Forwards reasoning:
Pelle is in their for the fixtures, good preseason form and he's completely nailed, i'm hoping and expecting for good things. Sakho in their for the fixtures and the form he showed last year. And Kun is Kun, don't want to bring him in later in case my plan to get him does't work due to a price change and if he plays...Kun is Kun, he scores when he wants.

Anyways thanks for taking the team to read and respond to this all of you, I appreciate all of the advice these past agonizing, anticipation-filled weeks from all of you

Going to right now answer questions and rate some of your own teams for those just as worried as I am 🙂

Like it a lot, one of the better slightly punty teams, you'll be in a bit of a tough spot if the highly owned players like Rooney or Walcott explode but I guess thats just the risk you take with a team like this.

Cheers mate! I'm less afraid of Walcott than I am Rooney but I think my team will survive if either needs transferring, maybe except in midfield i've tried to structure my team flexibly with a lot of prices so as to be able to latch onto the next big need

      Why not schwartzer as bu?

Pelle and Ozil are streaky for bad or good, Memphis and wijndaldum are new to league, don't think you will love the number of transfers you'll want to make

Hmm maybe I should get Schwarzer, was on Hennessey because he might start a fair few early on -- one to think about

Pelle is very much a form player and I think coming in with a good preseason will help him, Ozil can be streaky I agree, but I think this is the year he finally settles in

Memphis and Wijnaldum are both punts yes but I think they're both calculated and if it really really is a dire situation they're in good price points that i'll be able to offload them

Feels odd to leave 2M ITB (Aguero) but I think I am set..

    Schmeichel Butland
    Kos Azpi Cedric Coates Saylor
    Hazard Walcott Mane Ritchie Bentaleb
    Rooney Benteke Deeney

    Thoughts?

I'm personally just starting with Kun, don't want to waste a transfer but it could certainly work out for you, having Rooney
Defense looks very strong, I like it and I think its not too strong that it affects the rest of the side if Ritchie can perform

At this stage the season I am going with the aim of getting Aguero after Chelsea game and just hoping better fixtures for Rooney will translate to more points...

In regards to the post, I have Hooper as sub 3 and have no intention of playing him. I'm perfectly fine with having 1 dead piece of wood on my team.

    G2G?

    Ruddy

    Azpilicueta Cédric Mertesacker

    Walcott Depay Mané Hazard (c)

    Rooney Benteke, Wilson

    Subs: Butland, Targett, Anya, Gomez

I'm sure Gomez will get some stick but Tony Barrett has said he'll start as well as a few other creditable Merseyside Journos so I'm backing him!

Also worried about Walcott's game time, tempted to swap him for Sterling so I already have 1 City player ready for there GW4 onwards streak of relatively easy games.

Costa is a big risk, presume you know this though and are just willing to go for it. Rest looks decent though, but Coates ahead of O' Shea for me.

If you've got Wilson, surely this would be a prime fixture in which to play him? I'd play him over Cedric, who I don't think will keep a cleanie this week (maybe I'm biased, but that is my honest opinion 😛 ).

You could be on a winner if Costa starts, though he's a risk I personally won't be taking. I'm sure you've heard all of the uncertainty surrounding the sunderland defence, so O'Shea may/may not play. Finally, another argument you've probably heard before, but I'd go for an alternative 4.5 mid, due to the highly owned Wanyama's propensity for price drops once the casuals realise he's not actually going to score more than 3 points all that often.

      Hope that is helpful 🙂

Well I've currently got Fletcher, b/c he's not particularly well owned but looks reasonably nailed for 2 pts a game. But I'm open to suggestions.
