"Swansea didn't have chances against 11 men. The team was playing very, very well in the first half"

Seems like every time Mourhino opens his mouth now, nonsense comes out...........Swansea's 3 goals came against 11 men, plus other good chances.

To the new joiners, this is what you ought to know as a general rule.

15 things you need to know about FPL (just some random thoughts that might help mostly new players):

1 - taking hits is like drugs - it's fun in moderation, but when you get addicted there is no way back
2 - if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck - Don't draft an off form player just cause his "due".
3 - don't bother with heavy defence before Christmas - many mid table teams will provide many cs until January , when you separate the men from the boys.
4 - RMT for members is just a tool. That said, it's a freaking great tool. Become a member.
    5 - price matters - bookmark fiso.
6 - don't gamble with captain choices. Yes, once in a blue moon you will be the only one who captained anichebe when he drops 13, but more often then not Rvp/bale/Suarez/Walcott will score ten x two while your ingenious captain choice teaches you the meaning of "fluke" and why they are usually not repeated.
7 - FPL is like golf - it takes at least 6 hours of your weekend and makes the wife annoyed. Buy an iPhone and pretend you listen while you check scores and forums under the table.
8 - no player is worth 14m except Ronaldo.
9 - buying a mid for 4.3 or a 3.8 defender will free a bit more funds, but will surely cost you points - you need a decent bench - you will be surprised how many times your bench will be in play.
10 - winning your mini league is only fun when your biggest rival is NOT the secretary from the fourth floor - give yourself a challenge and join some strong leagues too.
11 - don't waste a transfer on a keeper. You have wild cards for sorting goal keepers.
12 - read this forum, listen to the podcast, research - but remember its just a game and there is luck involved. That's said, if you can't reach a top 100k at the end of a season - you are doing something wrong.
13 - listen to people, learn, but make up your own mind - dont blame others for bad advice - dont forget YOU are driving this car. It's on you buddy.
14 - watch some games - stats will only get you so far - sometimes you need to see players in action.
15 - we know your wife does not have an active FPL team. Stop it. It's fine. Many people have a second team for whatever reason.

      - Pick players that play!

Its hard to beat that rule. Make sure they are nailed on or at least first choice. You don't get many points for a player who just sits on the bench, it doesn't matter how good they are.

      • 11 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

Not very good advice unfortunately. 😕

      1. Agreed but building team value is important and hits that will help you do that and also bring in a useful in-form player early in the season can be worthwhile. Early hits have more time to repay themselves if they are wisely used.
      2. This depends who thinks it "walks like a duck", don't be put off by the opinions of others who only look at recent FPL points. Last season many said Hazard was "in poor form" after the first 6-8 games and he ended up as the top scoring player in FPL. Look at the underlying stats for shooting, chance creation and so on, not just points scored.
      3. This is a FFS myth, the actual statistics show little or no skew between the first and second halves of the season on clean sheets for top teams.
      4. RMT and similar tools are based on someone elses's opinion. Consult them by all means but don't be governed by them. If you have good judgement you will beat them.
      5. FISO is not the place to go for price changes but keeping an eye on them is not a bad idea.
      6. Following the herd on captain choices is no surefire guarantee of success as the captain polls last season proved. Pick carefully - it matters - but don't be afraid to make different choices to others.
      7. Or you could just try being honest with your loved ones. 😕
      8. Players you will use as a captain in, say, 33% of games or more can justify the very high price tags. Otherwise not. You can't have them all.
      9. This is good advice in general but it's not categorical, you only need 11 players every week and a couple of very cheap nondescripts on your bench may not kill you.
      10. Mini-leagues are a different game, use "your wife's team" for those (see point 15). 😕 Your own team should be aiming to win the game. (My personal opinion only, others are available).
      11. There is no hard and fast rule. Better to say "don't waste FTs" and leave it at that. It's the vanity or "butterfly" changes ("I really fancy bringing xxx in for some reason") that are often a waste.
      12. The fact that there is luck involved is something you should try to mitigate by making good decisions and having a mid-term as well as a short-term perspective. Always have a general idea what kind of shape your team is heading towards in 6-8 weeks time even if you adapt it as you go.
      13. Yes, yes, yes.
      14. This is good advice but not essential, the statistic-based approach can take you a long way. You need to find a combination between facts and impressions that works for you.
      15. See 10.

And here are a few extra of my own...

      16. Evolve a FPL playing style that matches your personality. Not everyone is cut out to play a safety-first, ownership-based, patient game. Equally not everyone is happy taking the risk of going out on a limb relative to others. It takes time to find your own style.
      17. Listen to and ask questions of others who have (a) good knowledge of FPL mechanics, and (b) specialist knowledge of the club they support (preferably they go to games). That combination can be deadly in a good way. A lot of putative "knowledge" posted about clubs, teams and individual players on sites like this is guesswork dressed up as certainty.
      18. Don't fall for the myth that points are the be all and end all of the game. Points are the measure of success but points relative to spend is how you achieve it. It's not just about having the highest scoring players. It's also about getting the maximum from your budget. A 6.0m player that can deliver 150 FPL points is probably as valuable to you as a 9m player that can deliver 180 points. Maybe more valuable because the 6.0m player delivering 150 points is harder to find.

With Baines out for a least a month does this make Galloway a decent signing. £4.5 for an Everton starter looks decent value to me all be it the Everton fixtures not amazing at the moment.

Worth monitoring - after Gylfi Sigurdsson's complete monopoly on Swansea set pieces last season, Jonjo Shelvey appears to have displaced him on corners over the summer. He took all 8 that they won at Chelsea yesterday, and did very well with them too. Siggy is at least on direct free kicks still, but this is a pretty significant blow to his assist potential if it keeps up.

Sad that Mings didn't make an appearance but he's a quality player so I presume it won't be long before he starts.

Watched Leicester. Very entertaining and attacking. It did look like Ranieri's head was threatening to implode during the first 5 minutes or so when Sunderland threatened to score more than once. (Maybe I should stop watching Scanners every Saturday morning).

One the one hand, I think Norwich are better than people give them credit for, on the other hand that defence is very, very vulnerable. I don't have any confidence in Ruddy either. I went to one match last season, was right behind the goal, and while Ruddy is commanding and a crucial organiser, you always had the feeling he was liable to concede.

And I couldn't make out who it was, but I hope whoever just stood there and played Cabaye onside is getting used to the new hole Alex Neil tore him yesterday.

for any spurs fan, or even united fan out there. i half-arsedly watched the game in a very boisterous australian pub last night, so missed quite a bit of the game. from what i have heard, spurs played quite well except for in midfield, where we failed to create any real chances. defence was solid, bar davies and walker's quite unfortunate own goal. harry kane did the best with what he was given, which was very limited. it seems as if we had rose and lloris in the squad it could have been a different story.

can anyone provide some info on how we looked? i would be very grateful.

Spurs played well for the first 20 minutes but faded after that

from what i did see, the last 20 had promise, but no good final balls.

Watched it and probably like everyone else was bored doing so!

Game was won and lost in midfield. Eriksen did OK but got absolutely no help. Bentaleb was terrible. Kept giving it away and ultimately it led to the goal. Chadli played in an advance position but did nothing with it. Dembele was anonymous.

Jose was right when he said Liverpool have passed Spurs through their purchases. With that central midfield the top teams will continue to beat you

It looks like Romero will be kept busy which is good for bonus points
On the other hand darmian looked the business

It depends on your team and that extra half mil.

Walcott owners...are you ditching him as soon as Sanchez returns or waiting to see how things pan out?

Ditching if I see well performing Alexis.

Waiting! Quite possible Walcott could be massive this season if he stays fit

Same every season. Bound to pick up a season ending injury sooner rather than later.

Taking the wait and see approach. Sanchez at his best when injuries took out the other big players. Walcott very explosive in his own right so could outscore him if he remains fit

Folks, does a shot hitting the woodwork count as a shot off or on target? What about a block?

Off target I think. A block is on target if it was on target and then deflected, even if off target.

Assume "on target" means going in if everyone else disappears. So a blocked shot can be "on target", I assume. Woodwork doesn't disappear so that would be a "no" id say.

      Off target
On target means it's going in if someone doesn't stop it.

Finished 3rd in my ML last season. Second place played his bench boost that included Mings and Baines. First place played his triple captain on Hazard. I'm a massive fan of the new chips.

Folks, if the disallowed goal by Cameron Jerome was ruled as high boot with Joel Ward at close quarters, wouldn't an attempt with a bicycle kick or a scissors kick (assuming at head's high) be similarly ruled out if it's a goal?

I've often thought that many bicycle kicks ought to be considered dangerous play if they prevent the defender from attempting to head the ball for fear of being kicked in the head.

In the case of Jerome's disallowed goal yesterday though, his high boot was moving away from Ward's head rather than towards it, and Ward probably couldn't quite reach the ball anyway, so perhaps the goal should have been given. It was a close call though.
