This season, we’re rolling out a Scout Picks squad in the middle of each week in order to give you a heads-up over our thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the days progress.

For Gameweek 3, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Having served his one-match suspension, Thibaut Courtois (5.4) comes back onto our radar as Chelsea look to bounce back against a West Brom side that’s yet to net this term. With David de Gea sidelined amid speculation on his future, Sergio Romero (5.1) targets a third consecutive clean sheet when Newcastle United pay visit. In the budget bracket, Palace’s Alex McCarthy (4.0) is pitted against an Aston Villa outfit that’s racked up the second-least attempts inside the box (seven).

Defenders

Manchester United’s back-to-back clean sheets encourage us to invest in their steady rearguard. Matteo Darmian (5.6) presents the strongest cast for inclusion, having notched two bonus points in both matches.

Joel Ward (4.5) bagged his second ever Premier League goal in the Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Among the league’s full roster of defenders, the Palace centre-back ranks fourth for penalty box touches (six) and second for goal attempts (three) this term, underlining his enhanced goal threat.

Notwithstanding the threat of rotation now Gael Clichy’s returned to the bench, Aleksandar Kolarov’s (5.5) marauding wing play could well harvest attacking returns when the Sky Blues visit Goodison Park. Aside from boasting a share of set-piece duty, the Serbian full-back has executed four more key passes (seven) than any defender this campaign.

Swansea’s attacking contingent are understandably garnering the bulk of the plaudits for their fast start, yet Ashley Williams’ (5.0) contribution shouldn’t be ignored. The imposing Welshman scooped all three bonus points last time out and will fancy his chances of rebuffing Sunderland’s lacklustre forward line.

Aaron Creswell (5.5)Β retains a spot in our Scout Picks by virtue of West Ham’s favourable home tie against Bournemouth. The Cherries failed to net in the opening two Gameweeks, increasing our faith in the Hammers’ back line.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez looked in ominous form against Palace – tallying more attempts inside the box (six) than any midfielder in Gameweek 2 – which bodes well for the Gunners’ home clash against Liverpool. Elsewhere in London, Yohan Cabaye (6.6) reiterated his Fantasy potential with a 10-point haul in Gameweek 1 and will be looking to pull the strings when the Villains come to town, while Dimitri Payet (7.6)Β should find pockets of space between Bournemouth’s banks of four.

David Silva (10.0) is more than justifying his top-tier price tag in these early stages, having bagged three assists in two starts. Everton will certainly do well to stymie the twinkle-toed Spaniard’s captivating start to the campaign. Conversely, Sadio Mane (8.0) has yet to set alight but should cause all sorts of problems for Watford’s new-look defence.

With three goals to his name already this season, Riyad Mahrez (5.7) could enjoy further success against Tottenahm’s mistake-laden rearguard. Meanwhile,Β Andre Ayew (7.1)Β  seeks a third strike in as many starts as the Swans roll up to the Stadium of Light.

Juan Mata (8.5) has piqued our interested as a mid-priced differential, given that the Spain international recorded nine points against Villa andΒ could be the chief architect of the Magpies’ downfall. Nathan Redmond (5.5) clearly has his shooting boots on in the wake of back-to-back goals on the Canaries’ return to the Premier League.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) tested the nerve of all non-owners on his return to the starting line-up last Gameweek. Aside from gracing the scoresheet, last season’s Golden Boot victor fashioned a wealth of shooting opportunities (seven) against Chelsea’s typically resilient back four, auguring another strong display against everton.

A home fixture against Newcastle United presents Wayne Rooney (10.5) with the perfect platform to kick-start his season. On a similar note, Diafro Sakho (6.5) possesses the pace and movement to trouble Bournemouth’s defence.

Troy Deeney (5.5) looks the pick of the promoted forwards this Gameweek, as Watford welcome Southampton to Vicarage Road. The Saints shipped five goals in their opening two clashes, with the Hornets lone frontman primed to capitalise on their defensive vulnerabilities.

Bafetimbi Gomis (7.1) looks to have filled the void left upon Wilfried Bony’s departure; the in-form marksman will doubtless be licking his lips as he prepares to face off against a Black Cats defence that’s been breached seven times already.

Community Champion

For the second week in a row the Community Champion beat the Scout Picks. Gameweek 2 Champion Daniel Levy – Not the Spurs Chairman racked up an impressive tally of 52 thanks to Liverpool’s Christian Benteke. The Scouts’ faith in Wayne Rooney proved their undoing, with their Gameweek 2 picks mustering just 44 points.

The community member who beats the Scout Picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a Β£100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Gameweek 1 Champion Fuzzy Warble beat us by a 12-point margin and remains the champion to beat.

Patch has been named Gameweek 3 Community Champion following this week’s lottery.

CL game for united tonight. Rotations will happen with those 2.
for 7m he's pretty good for FPL
      Vardy, Albrighton

Would you take out Hazard for Mahrez for a hit tonight?

Mahrez is definitely going up and Hazard looks certain to go down pretty soon.

    1. sozopol
      11 years, 2 months ago

If it weren't for a hit, then yes definitely. With the hit, probably not. Mahrez will still be cheap next week.

    2. Hooky
      11 years, 2 months ago

Depends what you plan to do with the spare cash. Do you need to do it to get Kun/Sanchez?

      1. Theatre_Of_Screams
        11 years, 2 months ago

I WCed last week and have Kun, Sanchez, Silva and Hazard. I currently have -

        Hazard, Deeney and Yoshida

They are all quite likely to drop and now i'm doubting whether Deeney will actually score many. I'm really starting to think that the following three would be much better -

        Mahrez, Benteke and Darmian

        Thoughts please?

        1. Melvin Udall
          11 years, 2 months ago

          Yes they would.

    Would love opinions on best options to fill vacant slots below;
    A Shaw and Yaya
    B Oxford and Silva

Looking at Utd's defensive record at end of last season/start of this makes A (doubling-up) all the more appealing.

    Butland McCarthy
    Darmian Kolarov Richards Gomez X
    Sanchez Payet Mahrez Westwood X
    Kun Benteke Gomis

    1. Theatre_Of_Screams
      11 years, 2 months ago

      Either are good choices.

    2. Melvin Udall
      11 years, 2 months ago

I would personally B due to the fact Oxford won't be in your team and I hate money on the bench. I also think Silva edges yaya and in this game those millimetres can add up.

  4. sozopol
    11 years, 2 months ago

On WC and looking for a GK to pair with McCarthy. Thoughts?

    1. Ferris Bueller
      11 years, 2 months ago

Butland; rotates brilliantly with Palace. Only question is over when McCarty will be replaced by a fit-again Speroni

ye thats what i thought, difficult one. got mahrez already... thanks

  10. CABAYE4
    11 years, 2 months ago

Are Januzaj or Shelvey good alternatives or should I just stick with the masses and get Mahrez in, with the consolation that at least he's going to continue rising.

    1. ZLATAN'S PONYTAIL
      11 years, 2 months ago

Shelvey always susceptible to bookings. Januzaj defo not a starter. Albrighton, Mahrez, Redmond are decent options

      1. CABAYE4
        11 years, 2 months ago

        Good point on the bookings.

Not keen on Norwich and Mahrez is definitely more of a goalscorer than Albrighton. Looks like he's the best pick.

    2. bdwhite91
      11 years, 2 months ago

Mahrez has been my 4th mid from the start, and I know there's no way he can keep this up. I got more than I bargained for, I think. Januzaj is a rotation risk and Shelvey may be in the shadows of Gomis and Ayew for swans coverage, but I know he's doing really well, just not getting fantasy points.

Might be too late for Mahrez as he's now 5.7, but maybe not. Look at Wes Hoolahan as well. He's been getting points. Just still tough to say after 2 game weeks.

      1. CABAYE4
        11 years, 2 months ago

Wow, great pick to have him GW1!

I don't think anyone expects him to keep this up but he's got decent fixtures and I need to raise some money for Silva.

I don't really want him but I think I'm going to get him!

    4. bdwhite91

Think Silva will always get more points, unless Yaya has that magical free kick again

      1. Garlana
        11 years, 2 months ago

Yaya seems a bit more prone to losing his head and getting booked too.

    5. Melvin Udall

time to have kolarov was first couple of weeks when clichy was injured. Good stats yeah but do we honestly think he's number 1 now?

    1. GuyIncognito
      11 years, 2 months ago

He'll start against Everton, he's playing really well and Everton are a bogey team for Man City. I think the Watford game is where you will start to see rotation.

    2. Del Griffith
      11 years, 2 months ago

Time will tell, personally I think he will play more this season than he ever has done before. If he nailed that spot permanently he'll be this seasons Ivan

    3. KingNidge
      11 years, 2 months ago

not at all he is capapable of explosive attacking returns going forward but he just isnt a very good defender.. he will get his fair share of games as will clichy

      1. GuyIncognito
        11 years, 2 months ago

Sterling will really help Kolarov out defensively.

    4. bdwhite91

Clichy was available for the chelsea game, but Kolarov started. Time will tell but I think Kolarov is ahead right now.

    WC team has now become..

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Kompany - Darmian - Williams - Richards - Gomez
    Sanchez - Silva - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood
    Aguero - Gomis - Diouf

Too much £ in the defence, right?

Silva & Diouf to Yaya and Pellé is my team, which is arguably an improvement.

      1. bodsc
        11 years, 2 months ago

I'm definitely Silva over Yaya, but my only issue with my team is having no Southampton. Want Mane or Pelle.

        1. Tabasco
          11 years, 2 months ago

I'd probably pick Silva if they were the same price, but they're not.

          1. bodsc
            11 years, 2 months ago

Think he'll be worth the extra playing at the 10 spot. This team will no doubt change again fairly soon though.

Any chance of Payet rising again before Ayew does?

  16. nibby
    11 years, 2 months ago

    A) Ayew - looks more lively

    or

    Gomis - don't like him -.-

    &

    B. Yaya - offers another big hitter mid i.e. Ozil/Eriksen

Or, Silva - Will provide more attacking returns

nothing to worry about as things stand.. proven prem performer and a great option

      1. Garlana
        11 years, 2 months ago

I think I'm going to go for him over the likes of Ozil and the other 8.5 options, might be a good option due to none in my league using him.

Team value is overrated. Like, there might be one point late in the season where an extra 0.1 could be useful but it's never really worth taking a hit for imo

    1. Milner4eva
      11 years, 2 months ago

If I hadn't wildcarded, my TV would have been about 99.5 at the deadline. As it stands, it will be about 100.5 or so, that's a difference of 1m. Makes a huge difference

      1. Sponge-worthy
        11 years, 2 months ago

Selling value won't be that high..

        1. Milner4eva
          11 years, 2 months ago

true, but it's still minumum 0.5 improvement in selling value. Still pretty significant, and most of the guys I have bought in I back to rise again in the future

    2. Tabasco
      11 years, 2 months ago

I think team value is important early on to give you some more flexibility later on the season. I wouldn't necessarily take a hit for it but a smart FT can work well.

    3. bdwhite91
      11 years, 2 months ago

Certainly not worth wasting a WC on. We're all gonna miss rises and falls at some point. Have faith in the players you selected unless their name is Wayne >.

      1. Galfadez
        11 years, 2 months ago

I am actually keeping the one they call Wayne this week mainly because I haven't watched a Man United game yet and him at home to Newcastle's defence looks so good on paper

Defo take hits early on in the season to gain TV, it makes a huge difference late on in the season. LAst season it didn't matter due to Kane but that aint gonna be the case this season

  24. Hakuna Juan Mata

Good spot, would love to get him. But worried he is set for some rotation? I think he moved to wing last game when Joselu was introduced too, which slighty dents his appeal, no?

Yeah potentially, I don't really know much about this Joselu to be honest!

Not sure who I really want around that price point - 6.5m sort of fits with the rest of the team.

    2. bdwhite91

Yeah Diouf was overlooked. I'm looking to get him in. He was amazing last week against Spurs. Destroyed this Man City fan's hopes last season...
