West Ham’s Mauro Zarate is set to miss the next couple of league matches through injury. The Hammers close in on a deal for Alex Song. Ryan Bertrand remains sidelined for Southampton, United take up pursuit of Sadio Mane, whilst Tim Sherwood waits on the fitness of Villa’s new wide man, Adama Traore.

Zarate sidelined for two matches

Mauro Zarate picked up a knock in training and is now set to miss West Ham’s home trip against Bournemouth and trip to Liverpool.

The Scout Says: With Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia also injured, Slaven Bilic faces a dilemma up front. The Hammers boss utilised a 4-3-1-2 in recent matches, with Zarate alongside Diafra Sakho, and could turn to either Modibo Maiga or Elliot Lee if he decides to continue with the same system. Alternatively, Bilic could well switch to the 4-2-3-1 set-up he regularly employed during pre-season, fielding Dimitri Payet in “the hole” behind lone striker Sakho. The 6.5-priced Senegalese striker already looked like a strong pick-up for the Hammers’ upcoming fixtures, given that they welcome the Cherries and Newcastle to the Boleyn Ground by Gameweek 5. On the flip side, Sakho’s 3% ownership may well be concerned that he’s tallied just two goals in his previous 11 league starts for the Irons.

Song edges closer to Hammers encore

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan revealed that Alex Song is poised to pen a three-year deal with the club subject to him passing a medical:

“He’s a player we all admire and we just hope that the medical shows he’s in a sufficient state for us to gamble. He couldn’t physically pass a medical tomorrow, but if the medics say it’s just a technical thing and he’s only a couple of weeks away you’d take that gamble and hope they’re right. He’s still got two years left on his Barcelona contract and you’re signing a player on a three-year contract, so it’s a huge commitment. He’s a big earner, Alex. He’s injured at the moment, which is something you’ve got to weight up. But we’ve got until September 1st to make a decision.”

The Scout Says: Song’s return to the Irons would raise further doubts over the playing time of Reece Oxford. The 4.1-priced defender emerged as a potential gem by playing from start to finish against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 but was withdrawn after just 45 minutes of the Leicester City clash. Bilic later admitted that the distribution from midfield improved significantly upon the introduction of Oxford’s replacement, Pedro Obiang, suggesting that the 16-year-old could be consigned to bench duty for the time being. Oxford has been drafted in by over 42,000 FPL managers this week but Song’s arrival would surely push him further down the pecking order.

United lodge bid for Mane

Reports surfaced on Wednesday night that Manchester United have tabled a bid for Southampton winger Sadio Mane. Understandably, the official line out of Saints is that the Senegalese international is a key component of their team that they’re not willing to sell.

The Scout Says: In the event that Southampton are swayed by a substantial offer and Mane plots a course to the Red Devils, the former Red Bull Salzburg wide man could be an even more attractive Fantasy prospect at the 8.0 mark. While there’s doubtless greater competition for places at Old Trafford, Mane’s ability to function effectively in any of the three supporting roles in Louis Van Gaal’s 4-2-3-1 formation would hold him in good stead. Furthermore, the Dutch boss recently stated that he prefers to play attack-minded forwards in the number ten berth – rather than midfielders in the mould of Ander Herrera – with Mane certainly fulfilling that remit. Any possible move would perhaps heighten Graziano Pelle’s appeal as the main target for the Saints, whilst the likes of Adnan Januzaj and Marouane Fellaini would struggle for minutes at United if Mane made the switch.

Sherwood questions Traore’s fitness

Having watched Adama Traore complete 90 minutes for Aston Villa’s U21 outfit, Tim Sherwood believes that the Barcelona youth product is some way off being fit enough to be considered for first-team action:

“Adama looked very short of fitness to me. He’s going to need the exercise to get himself up to speed. I don’t expect too much too soon but I know exactly what we’ve bought there. He’s a player who’s developing and has got exciting talent for the future of the club. We’re hoping that he can produce something for us immediately but I don’t think we should be putting too much pressure on him.”

The Scout Says: For now, Sherwood has settled on a front three of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Scott Sinclair and Jordan Ayew, but with Rudy Gestede pushing for starts, Jack Grealish expected to make the Crystal Palace trip and Carles Gil not far behind, that’s subject to change over the coming weeks. As such, few Fantasy managers will be eyeing up the Villains’ forward line at present, despite the fact they boast a fixture schedule (cry, SUN, lei, WBA) conducive to attacking returns over the next four Gameweeks.

Koeman admits defence needs time

Ronald Koeman has attributed Southampton’s poor start on the defensive front to the fact that his new-look rearguard needs time to gel. Nonetheless, the Saints boss is confident his latest recruits can flourish if they put in the hours on the training pitch:

“I knew already maybe there was a problem because, if you talk about the defensive strengths of the Southampton team we had last season and a big part of keeping cleans, you are taking about certain positions – goalkeeper, four defenders and two controlling midfield players. Some asked me about Schneiderlin – he was just one of five different players (missing) in those positions last Saturday. It’s normal that you will lose something – the new players need time in that position, the team needs time to develop and have the same strengths as last season. If you’re missing five of the seven, that is one of the reasons we have already got five goals against us in two Premier League games. We need time and we need to develop and learn, we need training sessions.”

Koeman also offered an update on the fitness of Saints’ squad, revealing that Ryan Bertrand won’t be reinstated until after the international break:

“Steven Caulker will come back to the squad. He’s back from illness but the rest is the same. They are progressing well (Jordy and Ryan). I think Ryan needs two weeks more. I hope he will be 100 per cent after international duty. Jordy will then be fit as well and that makes the team stronger.”

The Scout Says: Bertrand’s continued absence will allow the 4.0-priced Matt Targett to temporarily remain as the Saints’ left-back, whilst Caulker’s return will seem him vie with Maya Yoshida for the centre-back berth alongside Jose Fonte. After shipping three at home to Everton, though, Fonte has been sold by over 70,000 FPL managers, with the Saints’ slow start to the season persuading many to look elsewhere. Although the next three fixtures look promising (wat, NOR, wba), it may well be that Fantasy managers reassess Koeman’s outfit once the likes of Bertrand and Clasie are back in the fold as they look to rediscover the form that harvested 15 clean sheets last time around.

    Morning!

Anyone on a Wildcard considering Benteke?

He has great home fixtures and could be a great pick. Would save a transfer later on when you'd wnat to get him in for GW6.

      Nice team, like the Tekkers/Sakho.

the only real combination that your front can change to is the template: Payet/Silva/Gomis/Diouf scenario which I have seen alot - myself included. The defence is always a gamble and trying to find best choices for the price brackets. Like the kolarov flair.
Nice team, it could do better than the alternative but frankly you never know. Benteke/Sakho could blank and Silva could fire.... or you could be OR 1 after this week!

Team looks good though 🙂 Kolarov -> Kompany sticks out to me as a good use of the remaining cash. As much as I would like Kolarov to be a great option, I can't help but feel a Walcott 2.0 inbound.

Mccarthy likely only has one maybe two games left as Speroni is supposed to be back for the last game in August.

If this is a wc team then you should be trying to anticipate who the duds will be in a few weeks time and to me they are:

Butland - Stoke have looked rubbish at the back for a while now and with the midfield they currently have I can't see it getting much better.

Gomez - Can't see liverpool attempting the full season with a right footed child cb as their first choice lb so they have to sign someone for this position and I doubt you will want to be wasting transfers taking out a 4.5m def?

      Targett - Same as above

Huth - Leicester have looked a mess at the back so far and imo are a crash waiting to happen

Richards - Sherwood has not proven at either spurs or villa that he can set up a defensive team in fact the opposite is true so I don't get the richards pick

Mahrez - Looks a decent low risk punt expecially as a 5th mid so ok but I think people will be wanting him out soon enough too.

Diouf - decent punt but looks to be in competition with Joselu

Kone - Not sure if he starts when everyone is fit

Payet - I think he is over valued and a bit of a bum steer. He will score well but I reckon a lot of 7m and lower mids will outscore him over the season

Ayew - he scored 10 goals in France last year so I wouldn't expect him to keep up his current performances and swans fixt look tricky from attacking pov

Gomis - Decent long term player I reckon as he will probably be decent value as forwards go but again his fixt are not great, coming up against some sticky defenses.

Basically if either of those were a wc team I'd be looking to wc again in the next 3 or 4 weeks imo

It is interesting to note that Kolo Toure has been on the Liverpool bench in both their matches so far, and Sakho hasn't. There's surely no chance that Toure usurps Lovren's spot in the starting XI, and Sakho has constantly been rumoured to be leaving. Lovren is one of the best 5.0 defenders in the game, IMO.

2 CS from 2 is a good start. Some nice fixtures coming up too and he's at a price where he can easily be rotated with a 4.5 defender for his tough games.

He was 2 years ago. Maybe he's found his Southampton form. Even if not, there doesn't seem to be serious competition for him and Skrtel at the moment.

He certainly looks decent value for his price. I think my main turn-off is that I just don't anticipate that Pool will continue to keep CS. Having watched the games, my non-statistically informed judgement is that they are very lucky to not have conceded thus far.

With Arsenal (a), United (a - albeit United also looking poor going forward) and a relatively in-form WHU in the next 3, I think Pool may have used some of their luck already, and for that reason I don't think I'll be getting a Pool defender.

Yeah I understand your reasoning, however I'll be benching him for the Arsenal and Man U games, so I'll only be playing him for WHU, NOR, AVL in the next 5 games. I think he'll get atleast 2 CS from those 3.

Sakho seems to be on his way which would mean even less competition. Lovren seems a good pick particularly in Gomez starts rotating with Moreno.

Hmm... Spurs have been struggling in PL even they often played with their second string team for the past few seasons. The only season they managed to get into CL was the season with EL. I do not know the logic behind how this impact the team performance in PL, so I am not sure whether resting Mane actually helps.

Man City's impressive start could grind to a halt at Goodison.
Remember they have virtually the same squad as last season. Just swapped Milner for Sterling.
I think the City defence will concede a goal or two this GW.

Virtually the same squad, but also virtually the same squad that won the title just over a year ago. With City it's a question of their players being motivated and playing as well as they can, and they are doing that.

I think we will score, but we won't keep City out. 1-3 I think.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Charge of the Wildcard Brigade

Have we already had this season's defining moment?

Last season Gameweek 8 and Southampton's huge scoreline defined the season.

this season has the grewat Gameweek 3 wildcard stampede already defined ours. Top players, poor players, veterans, newbies - everyone's at it for better or worse.

Can anything this season possible top this week's charge of the wildcard brigade?

If there is a monster DGW, factoring in chips as well. A triple captain played for a 25-30 point haul could be huge. Also, it would amuse me as a non-WC to see Benzema/Cavani join Arsenal next week.

Depends if the players coming in on wildcarded keep it up or fade sharply.

If we've already seen 50% of Mahrez's goal contribution for the season, or if Aguero gets injured (or arguably worse, rotated in the league for Champions League games),or Chelsea and Southampton sort their defences out over the next two weeks, then the whole season gets blown wide open again.

Nah, not with Zabaleta waiting in the wings. He'll be nailed on... right until you buy him

    Wildcarded. Hooray!

    How's this looking?

    Butland / Myhill
    Kompany / Darmian / Morgan / Richards / Gomez
    Sanchez / Silva / Payet / Mahrez / Behrami
    Aguero / Gomis / Diouf

0.5 ITB in case of emergency. Like it?

I like it! Same team as mine, however I have gone for Westwood instead of Behrami, Williams instead of Morgan and Kolarov instead of Kompany

Nice, considered all of those. Security of starts for Kompany clinched it for me, Morgan for rotation and Behrami because he has a good fixture when Diouf has a crap one 😉

    A) Ayew & Sakho
    B) Payet & Gomis

What a toughie, which one and why?

Payet and Gomis on current form.

Was just going to type that myself 🙂

A is a million cheaper too

I think A is more explosive, but B more steady?

      B. Payet on all dead ball situations, and a lot more creative than Ayew. Gomis on form, good fixtures and guaranteed chances with Swansea's narrow and attacking style of play

I have gone for A as I believe they have greater goal threat

      B) Sakho not in form, with zarate injured Payet may well play in the hole where he can cause problems. Also Gomis 2 in 2 > Sakho

Me. Used my 2 FT this week to do Rooney and Sterling to Aguero and Mahrez! And I'm feeling confident

good for you. I took a hit to do Rooney+Benteke-->Kun+Sakho. I wanted to give Sterling a go for the good fixtures coming up.

Yes. Gestede more likely as Stoke looked good against Spurs in the second half.

Innsie, I think I'm with you on Lovren for .4 more. Not 18, experienced, big price tag. Sakho nowhere to be seen whilst Moreno had a cameo on Monday (not at the expense of Gomez, mind).

Yes I think he's a lot safer, more nailed on, has more bonus potential and more goal threat. Definitely worth the 0.4 extra I think.

So these are my captain alternatives:

    Rooney
    Benteke
    Sakho
    Payet
    Hazard
    Özil
    Mané

    Who'd you choose?

      No form
      @Arsenal
      No form, but fixture
      Form AND fixture
      No form
      Liverpool solid defensively
      Europa hangover

      Payet IMO
