Jose Mourinho completed his second summer coup by adding the highly-rated left-back Abdul Baba Rahman to Chelseaโ€™s ranks last week. The versatile 21-year-old โ€“ who can also operate as a midfielder or winger โ€“ arrives at Stamford Bridge for a hefty ยฃ17.7 million from Bundesliga side Augsburg and is determined to make an instant impact at both ends of the pitch:

“I am ready to play and to fight for the club, to give my best. I think competition for places is very important because without it the club wouldnโ€™t go further. Itโ€™s a big challenge for me and Iโ€™m going to fight hard to win trophies with this club and to achieve its aimโ€ฆI’m a left back and, as a defender, it’s important for me to be strong in the tackle, which I always try to be. I also like to get forward as much as possible and help the team in attack. It’s very important because obviously if you can provide crosses from out wide there is a higher chance of providing assists and chances for the team.”

THE HISTORY

Three years ago, Rahman was plying his trade in his home country of Ghana and now he is ready to take on the English top flight. The full-back worked his way up through the Ghanaian leagues and was scouted by top European clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Parma but in the summer of 2012, chose to join newly-promoted Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fรผrth.

By December 2012, Rahman had cemented a starting role with his new side and played every minute of the clubโ€™s league matches from the turn of 2013 to the end of that season. However, the defender didnโ€™t manage to save his side from an immediate relegation into the German second division for the 2013-14 campaign. What followed was a turbulent year for the Ghanaian, as he struggled for pitch time and was rotated in and out of the side. In those two seasons he didnโ€™t pick up a single goal and only managed a sole assist.

However, as the 2014-15 campaign started, Rahman immediately went about improving those figures. In Fรผrthโ€™s second fixture of the season, he bagged a brace and an assist in a performance that helped force through the already imminent ยฃ1.75 million move to Augsburg the day afterwards. That transfer proved to be the making of the youngster, as a series of defensively astute and clinically attacking performances saw the defender mark his name as one of Europeโ€™s brightest young sparks. Rahman ended last season with four assists from 31 appearances (29 starts) in the Bundesliga.

Despite his tender age the full-back has already become first-choice for his country, usurping Leicester Cityโ€™s Jeffrey Schlupp. He played every minute of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, as well as the qualifying matches, picked up three assists in those fixtures and spearheaded his sideโ€™s charge to second place.

THE PROSPECTS

With Filipe Luis returning to Atletico Madrid during the summer, Chelsea clearly needed competition for the left-back berth over the upcoming campaign. The versatile Cesar Azpilicueta offers Mourinho an option in both full-back positions, with the Spaniard affording the Blues an alternative to Branislav Ivanovic on the right of the back-four.

Although the Chelsea defence was relatively settled last term – with Ivanovic and John Terry playing every minute of their title-winning season โ€“ this year could be different. As we saw only last week, where Mourinho hauled off his captain at the break for the first time in his career under the Portuguese manager, changes may be afoot and Ivanovicโ€™s sluggish start to the season could also be a concern.

Both Jefferson Montero and Raheem Sterling made a mockery of the Serb in the opening two Gameweeks of the season, with his lack of pace exposed due to his managerโ€™s insistence on playing a high defensive line. Rahman, however, is quick enough to deal with even the fastest of Premier League wingers. That pace adds to the full-backโ€™s Fantasy appeal as he regularly bombs forward – he dribbled past an opponent 44 times last season, created 24 goal scoring chances in his 31 appearances and produced more crosses than any player in the German top-flight in 2014/15.

Itโ€™s not just his attacking potential that catches the eye, though. In last seasonโ€™s Bundesliga, the Ghanaian made more tackles (108) than any other player, winning an incredible 83% of those challenges, and also succeeding in 67% of aerial battles. He averaged more tackles, interceptions, dribbles and crosses per minute than Azpilicueta and seems to possess both the attacking threat and aerial prowess of Ivanovic, but with added pace to burn.

Having conceded five times in two matches, itโ€™s clear that something is amiss with the Bluesโ€™ backline right now, though. In the first two Gameweeks, they allowed their opponents more big chances (eight) than any side and sit second-worst for shots conceded inside the box (23) โ€“ a far cry from the defence that chalked up the most clean sheets (17) in 2014/15 and shipped fewer goals (31) than any other team.

As weโ€™ve seen before with Mourinho sides, though, Chelseaโ€™s defence โ€“ at their resilient best โ€“ have proven fixture-proof time and again and itโ€™s a little too early to tell just how much of an impact Rahman will have. If he eats away at Ivanovic or Azplicuetaโ€™s minutes, though, and Mourinho continues to curtail Terryโ€™s pitch time, pinpointing a viable route into the Blues backline could prove trickier than ever before.

At 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though, the new boy’s uncertainty of starts will ensure we steer well clear for now until there are signs he can establish himself as a regular. Given that Mourinho described him as โ€œa very good young left-back with potentialโ€ in yesterday’s press conference, it remains to be seen whether Rahman can nail down a starting berth or struggle for minutes like his predecessor.

    I'm aware of the extreme knee-jerkiness...but what do you think of Gomis -> Wilson now, based on $$$ rising and Wilson's fixtures?

    It would allow me to upgrade elsewhere (aka Yaya to Silva)

          If you're really worried about Mahrez and double hammers then move payet for mahrez. Personally, I would hold azpi for a bit yet, Kosc > City, get rid of targett, look for a way to move ozil to alexis, and sahko > diouf(or someone similar). But at the end of the day its not a bad team

          if anything just take out payet for mahrez for -4..

          u already have aguero(C) and silva..pelle decent fixture..decent defense (azpi huth kosc). chadli and ozil play pretty well in their previous games..taking out payet could give u decent fund to upgrade ozil in the near future. westham scores 6 goals in 3 games so its not that bad.

          sanchez instead of ozil is tempting but most will still (c) aguero so u will not do too badly

    Should have, would have, could have...

    So, what were your biggest mistakes this GW? Mine were:

    A) With 10 minutes to go I took out Wilson for Watmore to free up funds for next week's transfer.
    B) Got Depay as a one week punt (see A).
    C) Had picked Naughton over Williams based on attacking potential. Took him out last minute due to doubts over last season's red cards.

    Lessons are don't plan a one week transfer if on WC, and forget last season.

    Oh, and I took out Sanchez for Pedro with 4 minutes to go until the deadline ๐Ÿ™‚ Time will tell.

          Its difficult to determine a number. A differential for us should be a low ownership FFS player. Eventually the vast majority of the top 10k will be FFS people so we'll have a better idea then. Players like Aguero will be owned by close to 100% so you could say any player less than 50% ownership in the top 10k is a differential.

      1. Some count 10% as differential, some count 5%. I tend to consider both figures: for example, a player on 7% might be differential in the broader game but a popular pick on here.

      2. Depends if you're chasing or leading. A sprinkling of differentials can help steer you up, or down, the ranks.

    Any Geordies here (or anyone else ITK for that matter) know if S. Taylor (4.0) is likely to remain in the starting XI?

        That was my theory until they start to gel. Still think Depay will be a good pick up. Hopefully he drops a bit in value.

        Defensive assets yes. I've only got Darmian.

      Hold for one more week. I would save this week, give him another chance next week, and readdress the issue with 2 FT. Not a hard save I don't think.

      I did earlier. I know he has excellent fixtures but he just hasn't shown enough, unlike someone like Wilson who is bound to be central to whatever BOU do.

      Ritchie > Mahrez was just too obvious.

      Went a bit crazy. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
      So far it's gone alright...as long as Tekkers and Sterling blank I'll be in the green. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just looked at all of them as individual hits, and they all seemed decent transfers to me. A -16 is no worse than -8, if the next two (-4s) are ones you see paying off either short term or long term, IMO.

      Coates---->Kolarov
      Rooney--->Gomis(-4)
      Walcot---->Shaqiri(-4)
      Sterling--->Mahrez(-4)
      Benteke--->Aguero(-4)

      As long as Aguero scores, and Sterling/Tekkers keep quiet, I should be fine. Atm, I am in the green. Everyone I've brought in has returned a goal/assist.

        yeah i agree, they should all be looked at individually as -4. It actually looks like it's paying off man, nice! Could you have afforded Rooney, Wally, Sterling to Kun, Shaqiri, Mahrez, i think that would have been best but not too bad so far...may have to review my new tactic of little to no hits this season ๐Ÿ˜‰

          So far yeah, hopefully it continues. ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah I probably could've afforded that, but I wanted Gomis and Kolarov for the fun of it. ๐Ÿ˜† I'm a little bit trigger happy sometimes.

          Yeah, I think there seems to be a bit of a stigma around them, which is warranted in some cases, but really they can work out nicely if you play 'em smart.

    Hello deadzone

    How knee jerky is Sakho > wilson for a hit?

    My original plan was Sakho > Diouf / Gomis for a hit but my thinking is Wilson has great fixtures, frees up some funds and should make me a bit of cash before I take him out on WC in a few weeks.

    Thoughts?
