Monaco forward Anthony Martial became Manchester United’s biggest signing of the summer transfer window yesterday afternoon after joining in a staggering deal reported to be worth £36 million.

After welcoming the world’s most expensive teenager to Old Trafford, Louis van Gaal hailed the new boy’s versatility before suggesting he will be allowed to settle into life in the Premier League:

“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential. We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco. I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”

The History

Born in Massy (a suburban commune of Paris), Martial cut his teeth at the local youth academy of CO Les Ulis, before earning a big move to Lyon at the age of 14. During his second campaign with their U17 squad, the burgeoning talent amassed a whopping 31 goals in 21 outings, prompting a call-up to the France U17s. Martial made his senior league bow in February 2013 and went on to notch another two substitute appearances over the course of that campaign.

Identifying the untapped potential within the fleet-footed frontman, Monaco recruited Martial in the summer of 2013 for a €5 million fee. Still just 17 years of age, he tallied 11 appearances (eight starts) in the 2013/14 Ligue 1 season, registering two goals and one assist in the process.

Martial initially struggled to cement a regular role for Monaco last term. He featured in the first XI in just two of the first 15 Gameweeks before establishing himself in the second half of the campaign, starting all but six league ties thereafter. Having chalked up an underwhelming haul of one goal and three assists by Gameweek 27, Martial hit a rich vein of form, carding eight goals and one assist in the final 12 rounds of fixtures.

In terms of his involvement beyond Ligue 1, Martial managed two goals in as many starts in the French Cup and a goal scoring cameo in the French League Cup. On the European front, he recorded five starts in the Champions League, claiming an assist during Monaco’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates

Martial was handed his maiden call-up to France’s senior squad for their upcoming international friendlies against Portugal and Serbia. Since 2013, the precocious youngster has been a regular fixture for the France U21s, notching four goals in 12 appearances.

The Prospects

The 19-year-old – who arrives at Old Trafford on a four-year deal with the option for another year – has drawn comparisons with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry due to his pace, movement and eye for goal. Discussing his role for United, Martial admitted his preferred position is through the middle, though is willing to play wherever Van Gaal fields him:

“Since I was young, people have told me I have the right characteristics to play in England. I’m really keen to develop my game in the English league and prove my worth. He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”

Given that a criticism much-levelled at Man United this term has been the glacial speed of their build-up play and a lack of thrust on the counter, Van Gaal might be tempted to explore Martial as a wide option. With Memphis Depay looking nailed-on down the left, the Frenchman could switch to the right, thus affording Juan Mata to take up the central role behind Wayne Rooney. Arguably, Mata – who has so far equalled Rooney and Depay’s combined FPL score of 21 points – could prove the main beneficiary in such a scenario.

Alternatively, the Dutch boss might elect to start the ex-Lyon hit man through the middle – either in the support role or as the lone striker, which would see the out-of-form Rooney shift into the number ten role. Certainly, United’s skipper is struggling to fashion clear-cut chances as the spearhead of their attack, having tallied just eight attempts (three on target) in four starts. With Rooney now in the midst of a ten-match barren spell, such a scenario might better play to his strengths at this stage of his career.

Scrutinising Martial’s underlying statistics from the previous campaign, he racked up goals at a greater frequency (one every 200.4 minutes) than Rooney (251.6), Robin van Persie (221) and Radamel Falcao (341.3). Moreover, his shot accuracy (45.1%) was second only to Van Persie (47.4%), while his conversion rate (17.6%) was considerably better than Man United’s most clinical finisher, Rooney (15.2%).

Ultimately, the magnitude of Martial’s Fantasy appeal will largely be dictated by where Van Gaal intends to field him. Priced at 8.0 and classified as a forward, the rangy Frenchman would leap onto many a watchlist if afforded a central striker role, furnishing us with an enticing alternative to the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle in that bracket. On the other hand, a role on the flank would likely deter prospective investors from tying up one of their three forward slots.

Even for those managers keen to acquire Martial at this early stage, the Red Devils’ upcoming schedule (LIV, sou, SUN, ARS, eve, MCI) makes for grim reading. Considering that United have managed just three goals, 26 attempts inside the box and three big chances this term, it would take a significant leap of faith to back Martial to flourish over that stretch. The fixtures do take a turn for the better around Gameweek 11, though, allowing the new boy a chance to settle before considering investment.

assuming no injuries or red cards and all are nailed, which combo do you think will get the highest points? (clean sheets, saves, baps etc)

    A. De Gea + Evans + Haidara

    B. Lindegaard + Darmian + Janmaat

    C. Krul + Darmian + Evans

    Thanks!

C - Krul looks on form and making a lot of saves. Dawson better than Evans atm. If you went for maximum potential though you'd have to get B because Janmaat has assist and goal potential while none of the other combos have any real attacking threat.

It would indeed. Alas, both parties seem too busy posting lists of 10 bullet points why the deal fell through. Kind of amused that they both needed to make it a round list of 10... as if there weren't 17 or 8 or simply 1 reason (they were pigheaded) why the deal didn't get done in time.

Agreed. Pig-headed, paranoid, moronic - take your pick, they all fit both clubs. How about doing the DeGea business inside the spanish window first, then doing the next bit the next day? I'm sure ManU wouldn't trust it to happen but can you imagine if Real picked up DDG and then backed out on the second half of the transfer?

Don't really like this. It took me too long to figure out where all the money went.

I'd downgrade Depay and one other mid. There's value in mid. (Don't be loyal just because he's in your name or you're a big fan of his.)

A lot have people said they don't like it, maybe because it's not 'template'?

I know what you're saying about Depay but I just can't bring myself to ship him out just yet, not because he's in my name and he plays for my team, just a gut feeling that he'll pick up soon and start scoring some decent points. I know I could upgrade my 3rd fwd or defence with the money but I want to keep him.

Always go with your gut I say, after 9 seasons it has served me well 🙂

        Thanks.

I know some are template, but Sterling over Silva/Yaya and Depay for example could do the business over other teams who are 100% template.

I don't think upgrading the 3rd forward is neccessary, I'd much rather upgrade the defence...If you want Depay so bad, I'd sell Pedro or Sterling. I feel the defenders you have are not the best picks anymore. Kolarov is, but I personally don't like Francis and Ward because you'll depend on their attacking returns rather than clean sheets...and you can't expect too many of those with 2 attacking teams.

Prices are moving so slowly, fallers especially, is it even slower than last season? Rooney and Hazard have both fallen around 20% in ownership yet they've only dropped by £0.1m. They haven't even had a flag to reset their NTIs. Could it be that most of the people selling have done so on WCs and so around 30% of people at least have played their WCs already? Price movements hardly reflect transfer movements anymore.

Thanks I had a good read of that! TV is as important as ever imo, slower movements mean you have to really jump at the right time to maximise value. Harder to gain value and less bargains to be had from falls. This is part of the reason why I think they priced players quite favourably this season.

That was last week, there have been much more than 240 drops now.

Much more people are wildcarding early this season, most probably due to the first wildcard now expiring half-way through the season, so I think you're right Rooney and Hazard dodging second drops the last few days is probably due to that. I think we can expect more predictable price rises/drops once the wildcards end.

Fragile ego at that age. Want to be a superstar like they are in their dreams, and if they're short of that, its very hard to accept with all the hormones raging. So, they pack it in to go act cool and aloof in a different format where they can reclaim their male sense of superiority.

Teenage years are rough. There's no long-term perspective on life yet, and it can't really be taught to them yet either.

I agree with that....I've looked at the FA coaching vids which are ok but actually they forget the fact that kids turn up to training to play footy...not do drills. The one team in the league that isn't struggling for numbers is my sons old team. The coach never did any coaching...he just plays a match at training instead between the squad and chucks in a bit of banter.

My advice is to let them at it and express themselves and don't intervene too much with tactics and drills let them make the mistakes best way of learning

Yeah. I'm manager but I have a coach. I think you are right...I need to drive the bus towards fun and enjoyment. I don't want to be looking at only 12 or so players in a few weeks.

brutal run of fixtures until week 10

might be worth keeping at home to Chelsea since he likes to score on Jose to say, "See what you missed out on."

but, I might let him go and circle back later when the fixtures are more favorable

I am playing in a draft league and have the following trade offer:

    Mangala and gestede >>> Lukaku

I have lukaku and the other two players are being offered in exchange. I am considering it but the only deterring factor is Otamendi. Is Mangala nailed on?

Every scout report or moving target conclusion is the exact same

"Their fixtures come good at Gw - -, by then we should know how this player is going to get on"

WBA have been linked to a couple different new keepers. Knowing Foster will be back, I can only assume Pulis isn't a huge fan of Myhill. Just my guess.

Chiming in as I own the same as walsh, a hit costs 4 points, a potential appearance is a potential 2 points

This. A hit is mental and hasn't crossed my mind. Two scenarios: Myhill keeps starting and I'm fine or Lindegaard starts..I take a zero at GK for that week...and have to spend my transfer on Lindegaard. Not bothered 🙂

Just throwing in signings. Not a serious team. I'd love to play a 3 - 6 - 1 as theres a plethora of good midfielders I didn't include (Lens, Shaqiri, Sterling to name a few) and I can't say the same about the strikers.

At least there aren't 30 RMTs per page, many "shameless reposts" from "bottomed".

Right, I've settled on my Midfield for my WC and 2/3 of my attack. Using maximum 25.5 million, I need 1 Goalkeeper and 4 Defenders (McCarthy and Kolarov locked in). Anyone want to have a go please?

I'm only considering defenders from Swansea, Utd, Watford, Arsenal, Southampton and WBA

    Lindegaard
    Bellerin, Shaw, Naughton, Nyom

is what I'm on, but I reckon that's too much of a gamble (especially in goal)

      I like what you have!
I think Lindergaard is too much of a risk and IMO Prodl is a better prospect than Nyom

Might just toss a coin between Prodl and Nyom. Nyom has some decent attacking stats.

He has one career goal! And very few assists!
Prodl has scored a tonne of goals from corners and set pieces in the bundes

OK Prodl in. Might be a case of wait and see with WBA

Juan Mata on DDG "his hunger and professionalism are intact. He seems the same as ever to me, calm and relaxed".
Priced at 5.3 and next up is Liverpool who's only goal on the road so far this season came from the suspended Coutinho.
    Very tempting

As if Mata would say anything else? Spanish bros. Wouldn't read anything into such a quote.

It seems that the only reliable 8.5 keeper combo are

    Krul/ Elliot annd
    Schmeichel/ Scwartzer
McCarthy may lose his spot soon.

Yeah it appears so...but plenty of nailed 4.5s. Worth it to me to save .5 there and get McCarthy and spend a transfer if your 4.5 gets hurt than otherwise.

Only Reliable? Surely the whole point of those combos is to guarantee a starter

Keepers have no base in reality. Good keepers in poor teams have just as much chance of pts as poor keepers in good teams.....or indeed good keepers in good teams. Just stick a pin in and hope for the best.
