Our midweek “Weekly Shop” article arrives once again this afternoon, as we cast an eye over those players currently under consideration for our squads across weekly and daily Fantasy Football games.

This early scouting article is divided into two sections. The “Better Buys” will look at the key players for the week ahead, generally assessing those in-form assets who are braced for a promising fixture. The “Poundstretchers”, on the other hand, are the Gameweek prospects that should offer excellent value – often one-week punts, whose lower price tags enable funds to be spent on the big-hitters elsewhere in our lineups.

In today’s article, we assess what’s on offer in this week’s two featured games FantasyBet, and PremierPunt

Better Buys

Following four clean sheets in five between Gameweek 2-6, West Brom’s backline have since conceded five in their last two, with injuries contributing to a downturn in resilience. A home fixture against a Sunderland side that have scored only twice in their last four is an opportunity to recover the defensive solidity Tony Pulis’ teams typically display, with Boaz Myhill – at 4.5m in FantasyBet and 7.3m in Premier Punt – looking a strong option between the posts. After making six saves in his last outing against Crystal Palace, the keeper could be busy again against a Black Cat team that may be re-invigorated with the arrival of Sam Allardyce.

Chelsea’s defensive frailties have been well documented, with a single shut-out and 17 goals conceded over the first eight matches very unusual for a Jose Mourinho side. Weekend visitors Villa however offer the chance for the Blues to rediscover some coherency in defence, though – Tim Sherwood’s side have failed to score in two of their last three matches and have only notched eight goals in total this term. Chelsea look set to be without Branislav Ivanovic, who has been an uncharacteristic liability this term, whereas Cesar Azpilicueta (FantasyBet 6m, Premier Punt 9.2m) has been their most consistent performer and has started every match so far.

Alexis Sanchez’ (FantasyBet 11m, classed as a forward in Premier Punt at 15.4m) statistics over the initial six Gameweeks indicated that goals were imminent and our patience was rewarded, with five strikes over the last two matches re-affirming the Arsenal attacker as a top Fantasy pick. The Gunners do have a crucial midweek Champions League tie with Bayern to follow their trip to Watford but the Chilean’s stunning form is too integral for Arsene Wenger to rest this weekend, having produced nine goals and two assists in the last five appearances for club and country.

After serving up four goals and five assists since Gameweek 4, Graziano Pelle (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 12.2m) has shot to the top of the forwards leaderboard. The Southampton frontman – who also scored in the midweek international for Italy against Norway – will be a popular pick this week, given that he’s up against a Leicester side that have conceded 15 goals so far (the fourth worst record in the league) and have yet to earn a clean sheet.

Poundstretchers

Steve McClaren’s problems at Newcastle were compounded with the news that Tim Krul will be out for the season after sustaining a knee injury on duty for Holland. Robert Elliot (FantasyBet 4m, Premier Punt 6.4m) is set to fill in over a kind run of fixtures that begins with the visit of Norwich. The six goals conceded at Manchester City could potentially be the wake-up call the Magpies need to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, whilst Elliot could rack up save points if the Magpies backline fails to keep the Canaries at bay.

Arsenal have collected a clean sheet in all four occasions that Gabriel (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.1m) has played the full 90 minutes in the league this season, highlighting the Brazilian’s steadying influence in central defence. With Laurent Koscielny unlikely to be available for the clash at Watford, the cut-price Gabriel looks less prone to rotation than the Gunners full-backs ahead of the Bayern encounter and the visitors will be optimistic of another shut-out, considering that the Hornets have scored just once at Vicarage Road so far.

Our next pick is a little more expensive than our usual Poundstretcher options, though Sergio Aguero’s absence for City should leave enough in the bank for most Fantasy managers to splash the cash. With that in mind, we’re backing Palace’s Yohan Cabaye (6.5m in FantasyBet and 8m in PremierPunt), who has been directly involved in his side’s last three goals, scoring two and providing the assist for the other, resulting in back-to-back wins for Alan Pardew’s side. The Frenchman also scored over the international break and looks in fine form ahead of the upcoming visit from London neighbours West Ham.

Saido Berahino (FantasyBet 6.5m, Premier Punt 9.7m) had a difficult few weeks at West Brom after pushing for a move over the summer. After returning to the Baggies first XI, the frontman scored in successive matches prior to the 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park last time out, where he was withdrawn at half-time. Tony Pulis criticised the forward’s performance against Palace, meaning it’s a risky pick, but up against Sunderland’s porous backline, the youngster should still be considered as a budget option.

These are the players on my radar ahead of this weekend’s weekly contests. On Friday, I’ll be back with a further look at both this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and PremierPunt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

    WC 3.4 itb:

    Eliot (Gomes)
    Bellerin/Dawson/Cedric (davies,O'shea)
    Mane/payet/sanchez/KdB/Mahrez
    Pelle/vardy (ighalo)

.....plan is to upgrade my players based to performance this week. Is it a good plan or does it need some differentials??

The Aguero replacement has to be one of the hardest decisions I've had to make on FPL. Not particularly excited by anyone.

Might go Aguero > Ayoze/Mitrovic this week, go big on a 5th mid next week but even then it'll give me a headache once Aguero's back fit, hmm...

I was hoping to catch lucky with injuries. Risk that didn't pay off. Guess I could isolate the aguero transfer -4 for what it is. However as I'm 100% on who to bring in and can play ighalo, think I might just sit this GW out and see who looks the best option come the end of it.

Regardless of Ivan, I think this will be my transfer. Villa don't look strong enough to deal with him, could be a haul.

Plus, I'm WC in 2 weeks most likely, so can get him out then if need be.

I must admit after being 100% I'm starting to get cold feet. Added to the fact KDB and Sanchez are in amazing form. If Yaya out then I might switch to KDB as he'll be in the hole and surely central to everything city do, however if Koeman gives assurances that Mane will start then I might stick to my guns with him.

Yeah it's only the 'starting' hang-up that I have as well. Big risk for a captaincy.

But for me there are bigger question marks over City exc Ag/Silva, Ars vs a good defence and Chelsea's form, so I'll probably end up on him.

Assurances from Koeman would seal it.

If you think you've been out of the loop for a few days you could just google Aguero injury and see if there is an article with a relevant quote in it. There is no other source worth considering. This just isn't true though. He had a lot of shots in the box, they were just of target. The most important point with Aguero is he was getting chances but not taking them. Costa simply hasn't been getting the chances.

Costa is still an option but it is based solely on fixtures.

Comes back to the classic form v fixtures discussion.

                  Agreed.

It has been discussed, but Chelsea haven't prepared well preseason and thought they could coast through this season (almost as they did last season). Key players have turned up unfit and unprepared.

This will change its just a matter of when though.

Probably not, but he also could be with a brace. The only reason I'm particularly optimistic about Costa is the lack of genuine threats out there atm, Sturridge/Lukaku/Kane etc could all bang braces but imo I think going off stats all the time isn't the way to go. 🙂

plus - say we was going off stats, this could well be the game Costa does very well given Villa's defensive issues.

But then you'd argue Costa's been a no show, etc. Ha! It's a tricky ol' game. 😉

Sometimes a punt is needed to split from the pack.
Costa will come good, he knows how to score and still moves well.
Hazard played well during the break, so did Willian.

Costa with a brace this weekend.

dont bother too much with the stats but that is good to know..

also my worry with Sturridge is being shunted out wide as Klopp has always operated with just one centre forward.. thats not to say he wont get among the goals but just he wont be the focal point..

Hey Doosra, just wanted to know what you think of this for a -8.

Agüero and Mahrez to Sturridge and Walcott.

      GW9:
      Butland
      Zouma Dawson Kolarov
      De Bruyne Sánchez Payet Walcott
      Sturridge Pellè Vardy

      (Schmeichel) Westwood, Richards, Cathcart.

After Chelsea beat Arsenal I honestly expected them to tighten up as they have a boost in confidence. So that's why I picked Zouma with his attacking threat.

Richards; I thought Sherwood would be tight but boy I was wrong.

Cathcart is a pick I still like.

Kolarov and Dawson speak for themselves.

Reasonably tough fixture for Sturridge though I feel.

Bony could easily score a brace but requires him a) starting and b) recapturing his Swans form. Bit of a gamble.

I can still see Costa doing well, think I'll end up bringing him in. No baps though.

              Perfect, thanks!

Considering doing Aguero > Sturridge and Westwood > Walcott for -4, would leave me with:

              Butland
              Kolarov/Darmian/Williams
              Sanchez/KDB/Walcott/Payet/Mahrez
              Sturridge/Pelle
              (Schmeichel)(Ighalo)(Prodl)(Gomez)

The defense is a mess, but I'm not sure I can justify Darmian > Bellerin for another -4, and I'm happy with his fixtures after the derby.

I know Pelle is scoring, and I could easily move for him, however, He's disappointed me many times other than GW8 last season. Promised I won't go there again!

I've had success with Sturridge in the past and 8/10 I can rely on him to tuck a decent chance away. Can't say the same for Pelle.

I cannot manage towards randomness (i.e. Lukaku inconsistency). It's either take Lukaku and his good average returns (as in arithmetic) or take another forward is is most apt to have a big game in the immediate future. For my needs, I have the luxury of a pending wild card, so I want the player who is, all things being equal (which they are not, I know), most apt to get a big haul. It's either Sturridge, Kane, or if dead come back to life and roam the earth again, Costa.

If I had transferred Aguero in during those few days after he scored five goals and before a lengthy injury I would happily spend another -4 to avoid looking at him and his red flag on my bench.

Sturridge looks a good option. At least has some recent form, although are you moving rashly from one glass legged striker to another.

If I was a punty man, which I'm not, I'd consider something a little more maverick like Mitrovic or Murray, and use that spare cash for further upgrades in midfield.

Sturridge's injuries are most likely behind him, the club feel his op in the states got to the root of the cause. Last season he used to break down the first game on his return back, that hasn't happened this season. He also went through carefully designed recover program for 4 months. The club took precaution this time and he wasn't rushed back.

I accept it's early days, just providing some background here.

Upgrades in midfield, you say? 😉

        GW 8:

        Kolarov*, Monreal, Williams
        Sánchez*(c), Walcott, Mané, Payet*(vc), Wanyama
        Pellè*, Sakho

        Gomes*; Souaré, Cook, Agüero … - 8, 0.2 ITB, TC: 103.2, SV: 101.9

Ah, was looking at your gwk 8 midfield. That had Mahrez (poss rotation risk) and Sterling (clearly not the best Man City mid) so there was plenty of room for improvement there. Yes Mane is a good one. But perhaps KDB would have been better.

Nevertheless certainly room for improvement with Wanyama there. Lots of better cheap options.

I'd be looking ahead perhaps to Everton and ManU's fixture turn perhaps. Not this week, but with money in the bank lots of options come gwk 11 open up such as Mata, Martial, Lukaku and upgrading Wanyama to Barkley.

If your on WC, then id change these:

Richards > Davies (Spurs have a higher chance of keeping a CS over Villa; and davies is 4.5)
And id change both gomis and berahino

This international break has felt way too long. Starting to get fantasy withdrawals. I'm not sure if checking here every day helps or hinders.

Both to risky at this point unless you need differential to catch up. One has form but doesn't have fixtures and one has fixtures but doesn't have form. If Aguero really is out for 7 weeks, Lukaku/Pelle/Vardy seem like legit choices. Form and fixtures.

Debating my Aguero move since Sturridge could rise tonight.

    A - Aguero/Sako to Sturridge/Mane

    B - Agueor/Sako to Pelle/KDB

Stats (and dullards) will say B, but differential (and gut) says A.

    2. Elwood

      B) Goals galore

Sturridges fixtures are terrible, he's not on oustanding form, we don't know what will happen with the new manager.

      1. Elwood
        • 14 Years

Sturridges shot accuracy is 50% and conversion rate 20%. He's not been getting the service to have a high number of shots on goal so not worth the high price tag.

I know I need Sanchez, but all of my midfielders seem solid. Who would you swap out for Sanchez and is it worth a -4 or just wait until next week to see how everyone performs this weekend.

Mahrez - Great fixtures/high scoring team/but benching potential
    Mane - In form/Great fixtures/high scoring team
Ayew - Goal last week/Next 4 out of 5 solid/5th leading midfielder in points
Payet - Season keeper/Average fixtures/ high scoring team
    KDB - No brainer

Tough call as Sanchez is captain material this week imo. He is a better option than any of these mids but Mahrez is probably the easiest to sell. Especially if you have Vardy as well

Ayew just scored and has 4 favorable fixtures in the next five. Also, the fifth leading mid in points right now. Hold Ayew.
