We call upon a trio of midfielders this Saturday morning in our usual scour for overlooked Fantasy options. Chelsea’s Willian looks a man in form ahead of the champions’ trip to Stoke, whilst Matt Ritchie and Moussa Sissoko jostle for our attention as Bournemouth host Newcastle in the early lunchtime kick-off.

Willian

Although Chelsea’s attack has looked dreadful at times this season, Willian has escaped the scourge of poor form that’s afflicted much of the champions’ squad. Aside from notching two goals and assists in his previous five leagues starts, the Brazilian midfielder has netted in all but one of the Blues’ quartet of Champions League ties.

Astonishingly, all five of Willian’s goals this term have arrived from free-kicks. Allied to his proficiency from set pieces, Willian places top among Chelsea’s midfield contingent with regards to shots on target (three) and key passes (eight) over the last four Gameweeks, highlighting his attacking potential since returning to the first XI.

Although the Potters have tightened up of late – claiming three clean sheets in their previous four outings – they rank third for big chances conceded (24) this season, which bodes well for visitor’s attacking prospects.

With Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro doing little to justify their premium tags, Willian (6.8) serves as a mid-price option ahead of a schedule which sees Jose Mourinho’s men also play Norwich, Bournemouth, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford in the subsequent six Gameweeks.

Matt Ritchie

In the absence of Callum Wilson and Max Gradel, there’s even greater emphasis on Matt Ritchie (5.6) to discover his groove in the Premier League and showcase the kind of form that saw him amass 15 goals and 17 assists in the Championship last term. Although he’s yet reach top gear for the Cherries, the Scotland international boasts two goals and an assist in six outings and is threatening to emerge as a viable option in the mid-priced bracket.

Over the last two Gameweeks, only Philippe Coutinho and Yaya Toure (both eight) chalked up more attempts than Ritchie (seven), who mustered two shots on target. Moreover, Bournemouth had no issues crafting chances for their forwards over that stretch, considering that only five clubs racked up more key passes (20) since Gameweek 10.

Next up for the south-coast outfit is a home tie against Newcastle United. The Magpies did record a clean sheet in their match-up against Stoke last weekend, but they still rank second for goals conceded (11) and third for big chances conceded (10) in the last four Gameweeks. In addition, Ritchie – who has produced points in each of his last three home matches – will also be encouraged by the fact that the Tynesiders have surrendered the fourth most shots inside the box (100) this season.

Moussa Sissoko

Behind the spotlight-grabbing Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko has been Newcastle’s most impressive midfield performer this campaign. Just 11 Gameweeks in and with four assists to his name, the all-action Frenchman has already surpassed his haul from last term (three assists) and is well on course to match his best season (six assists) on the creative front.

Delving into his underlying statistics over the last four Gameweeks, Sissoko ranked fourth among all midfielders for key passes (14), with only Mesut Ozil, Dimitri Payet (both 18) and Christian Eriksen (15) managing more. His effective distribution ensured that the Magpies placed fourth for shots inside the box (39) and big chances (eight) during that period, marking a significant upturn in their goal threat. Furthermore, his tally of four efforts inside the box matches City’s Kevin de Bruyne and is more than Arsenal’s Ozil (three), for example.

The figures suggest, then, that the 5.7-priced Sissoko could profit from Newcastle’s upcoming trio of alluring fixtures (bou, LEI, cry). Steve McClaren’s troops proved they are capable of scoring big with a 6-2 victory over Norwich City in Gameweek 9, so a road clash against the Cherries – who chart bottom for goals conceded (13) and big chances conceded (15) over the last four Gameweeks – looks conducive to attacking returns.

The reason I'm first in my ml right now is because my mate benched mahrez last week, so i think it's more of a hinderance than anything.

              Cash is irrelevant.

Somehow I have managed to get the best front 7 out of my 8 most of the times (only 57 points on bench) but I know what you mean.

However, it has also given my the liberty on focusing my more concerned areas like defenders when Agueros & Wilson were injured - didn't need to make any transfer in hurry and without thinking nicely and long over them

Morning all, playing in a draft league, where each player can only be owned by one person.

Bringing in Aguero today, do I do:

I think I've narrowed my benching choice to Payet or Ighalo, and I feel it has to be the former, from this lot:

    Sanchez - KdB - Mane - Payet - Mahrez

I don't think it's that, it's a very tough call, even the most veteran managers like Mark & Jonty benched Mahrez last week. These are unpredictable times, we can only analyze so much on what on paper are arguably coin tosses.

No, I think it's because nobody knows the answers this week. Too many good fixtures for our power 8, and everyone's got horrendous benching dilemmas.

I genuinely feel like every one of my front 8 could be captained, and I'm having to bench one of them
(AOA would be a waste as I've got decent defensive fixtures too)

It's so hard to know who to pick!

I think this week of all weeks go with your gut (wind) that way you'll not be disappointed!

Just because he usually outscores vardy o logical decision would e on him, just had a feelin bout vardy all week though so dont know

Go with gut. If mahrez outscores Vardy it'll hurt less than if you captained mahrez and vardy scores higher

I feel that this could be the widest choice of captain this week since season start, hearing so many different options, it's a sign of the gulf of choice when I see loads captaining Pelle when I'm actually benching him :-/

why would you bench him vs Sunderland?

AOA already used and it came down to Payet, Kane or Pelle. Payet has become a differential this week with the amount of people benching him (bit like Mahrez last week), Kane is hot right now, so hoping that big Sam will have them tighten up at home.

Pelle has a much bigger ceiling than Kane though. Kane will likely not score multiple goals vs Arsenal but Pelle certainly is capable of putting a couple past Sunderland.

Good luck with whatever you choose

Why do you say that? Pelle goal scoring away from home is quite poor, plus only 1 goal in last 3. Kane 5 in last 3, Arsenal issues in defence, I reckon Kane will easily outscore Pelle.

It's basically a coin toss, you know the one you bench will reap the pts whilst the one you pick will blank.

Really is, intriguing weekend ahead. The spectrum of picks is so wide, for example some benching Mahrez and some others captaining him. Crazy. It looks like it could stay like this for a while, or at least as long as Aguero is out.

    Who should I bench?

    kDB-Mane-Mahrez-Sanchez-Wijnaldum

    Vardy-Lukaku-Ighalo

    and who should I captain?

Strong feeling to go with either Mahrez or Vardy, but Mane and Sanchez also interesting picks.

    Thoughts please peeps

    Butland / Elliot
    Bellerin / Dann / Bertrand / D Simpson Francis
    Payet / KDB / Sanchez / Mahrez / Wanyama
    Lukaku / Vardy / Pelle

Backline today is going to be Francis (H to Newcastle) Bertand (A to Sunderland) Simpson (H to Watford)

Got my FT to use. Is Francis to Moreno worth the punt? Or would you keep the FT with an international week ahead?

I will play Dann rather than Simpson. Liverpool was pretty numb against Rubin... just a goal only with their first team players.

Mahrez vs Vardy for the armband. How are we approaching this decision?

Eg: some posters are saying Vardy will be marked tightly thus Mahrez will have more space etc etc...

    1. Uncle John from Jamaica
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

I have both and I am on Vardy as he is more in form and Mahrez has not been selected very game although I must confess I have had the same dilema as good arguments for both.

    2. NasiKandaqFC
      • 10 Years

the only thing that helps me to say Vardy is the fact that he keeps on scoring. Mahrez might score, or he might be kept quiet as well.

The Watford backline would be trying to lock him down in order to stop the balls going to Vardy in the final 3rd.

      haha difficult times mate.
