It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Despite drawing blanks in his last two outings, Harry Kane (27%) attracted the largest backing ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the Magpies pulled out an eye-catching win over Liverpool last time out, they still rank top in terms of goals conceded (30) throughout the course of the campaign. In addition, Kane has displayed a propensity for explosive returns during his fledgling career, notching two or more goals on seven occasions.

Romelu Lukaku occupies second spot with a 23% share of the vote. The Everton marksman currently places second in the overall scoring charts (11 goals), having netted in his last five starts. No side has managed fewer clean sheets than Norwich City (one), so there’s every chance Lukaku will perpetuate his streak when Everton make the trip to Carrow Road. Given that the Merseysiders carded eight goals in the previous three Gameweeks, Ross Barkley (1%) also finds a spot in our top ten.

The favourable nature of Manchester City’s home tie against managerless Swansea finds Kevin de Bruyne (17%) among the top three. The Sky Blues are out of sorts on their travels right now but remain a formidable force at the Etihad, having tallied six more home goals (23) than any other team. As such, David Silva (2%) – who scored a searing strike in midweek – serves as a viable differential pick.

Just over 8% of voters were swayed by Mesut Ozil’s consistency, considering that he hasn’t failed to deliver attacking returns since Gameweek 6. Playing behind a buoyant Olivier Giroud – who bagged a hat-trick in midweek – the German playmaker will be afforded short odds to register his 13th assist against a floundering Aston Villa side. Elsewhere in the Gunners camp, Aaron Ramsey’s switch to a central berth convinced just over 1% of voters to hand him the skipper’s armband.

Riyad Mahrez (3%) is the pick of Leicester’s much-vaunted duo ahead of their home encounter against Chelsea. The Blues rearguard posted four clean sheets in their last five fixtures across all competitions, ensuring that Jamie Vardy has dropped off the radar in our Captain Poll.

Odion Ighalo (3%) places third among forwards for total score (96) by virtue of his nine goals and five assists. The Watford frontman has drawn just three blanks since Gameweek 5 and will be relishing the opportunity to tackle Sunderland’s inconsistent defence at the Stadium of Light.

I wouldn't use a transfer to drop either. You must have other moves you can make?

The 4 leakiest defences over the last 4 GWs based on their average ranking in the league for Shots in The Box Conceded and Big Chances Conceded. Essentially, the 4 worst defences in terms of, imo, the two best defensive indicators. If any of your players are up against a team that features on this table, might be a good idea to slap the (C) armband on 'em.

    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/12342/

Norwich move in as West Brom drop out of the table since the Spurs game.
Swansea just miss out in 5th place.

Nice table and I agree with your choice of stats.

It is just ranked by big chances conceded though, not the average of variables as stated.

    Hi All.

    Who to bench...?

    Coutinho or Deulofeu?

Other Mids are - KDB, Ozil, Mahrez

Coutinho might not play as he's still recovering from injury and if he does likely won't play 90 mins, plus West Brom have a good defensive away form so I'd probably go with Deulofeu

Although I agree Coutinho may not get a full run out.

struggling to pick a captain this week, my head says Kane v Newcastle (although they look a lot better recently) but the form Lukaku is in makes me think he'll still score away to Norwich so might be the safer pick

I've switched between them 5 times already this week, I'll inevitably go Kane and see him blank and Lukaku score a couple tomorrow :\

Don't let anyone influence your captaincy decision. You'll feel better whichever way it goes

Well I don't have Kane and I am not looking to listening to how the game goes on the radio!

So it's Lukaku all the way!!!

      Nope.

Not very fashionable but could be worth a punt with Sturridge out for a while.

    What to do with Hazard,

    A) transfer for Silva/KDB for -4 (no man city cover)
    B) start
    C) bench
    D) sell for someone else

      B, leicester defence is atrocious

It's improving to be fair. 2 clean sheets in last 3 and only 2 goals conceded in last 4

Agreed, only concern is no man city cover. Could Swansea park the bus? All roads seem to lead to a haul

he is on my bench; getting him got me into a right mess, but now my defence is too messed up to do anything about it.

Benching with Alli coming in, holding for next week, may bench (ars) It's the boxing day game (SUN) that's making me hold

if I had him, I'd bench.

As a none owner, sell! (so his price drops!) 🙂

I'm selling. Just have no idea who for.

We can throw Sturridge owners in there as well

Which combination (one mid + one fwd) would you go fit from the below options. My aim is to score as high as possible this week, not too concerned about future fixtures.

Mid = Walcott Ramsey sterling arnautovic
    Fwd = Kane giroud

This week , Sterling and Kane

      Ramsey long term
