It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Despite drawing blanks in his last two outings, Harry Kane (27%) attracted the largest backing ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the Magpies pulled out an eye-catching win over Liverpool last time out, they still rank top in terms of goals conceded (30) throughout the course of the campaign. In addition, Kane has displayed a propensity for explosive returns during his fledgling career, notching two or more goals on seven occasions.

Romelu Lukaku occupies second spot with a 23% share of the vote. The Everton marksman currently places second in the overall scoring charts (11 goals), having netted in his last five starts. No side has managed fewer clean sheets than Norwich City (one), so there’s every chance Lukaku will perpetuate his streak when Everton make the trip to Carrow Road. Given that the Merseysiders carded eight goals in the previous three Gameweeks, Ross Barkley (1%) also finds a spot in our top ten.

The favourable nature of Manchester City’s home tie against managerless Swansea finds Kevin de Bruyne (17%) among the top three. The Sky Blues are out of sorts on their travels right now but remain a formidable force at the Etihad, having tallied six more home goals (23) than any other team. As such, David Silva (2%) – who scored a searing strike in midweek – serves as a viable differential pick.

Just over 8% of voters were swayed by Mesut Ozil’s consistency, considering that he hasn’t failed to deliver attacking returns since Gameweek 6. Playing behind a buoyant Olivier Giroud – who bagged a hat-trick in midweek – the German playmaker will be afforded short odds to register his 13th assist against a floundering Aston Villa side. Elsewhere in the Gunners camp, Aaron Ramsey’s switch to a central berth convinced just over 1% of voters to hand him the skipper’s armband.

Riyad Mahrez (3%) is the pick of Leicester’s much-vaunted duo ahead of their home encounter against Chelsea. The Blues rearguard posted four clean sheets in their last five fixtures across all competitions, ensuring that Jamie Vardy has dropped off the radar in our Captain Poll.

Odion Ighalo (3%) places third among forwards for total score (96) by virtue of his nine goals and five assists. The Watford frontman has drawn just three blanks since Gameweek 5 and will be relishing the opportunity to tackle Sunderland’s inconsistent defence at the Stadium of Light.

I posted this earlier this morning, but there wasn't much activity on the site then...

I've been considering getting Kane in for either Vardy or Ighalo but looking at his returns so far this season I'm not sure why? He has only posted a score in 5 out 15 rounds and no assists. Seems to have had fewer shots last couple of game weeks too.

Vardy and Ighalo have both out scored him by 38 and 27 points respectively having played similar minutes and playing for so called lesser teams, they're better value for money, offer assists and have only blanked 7 times between them - 7 blanks in 30 GW!

They've also already faced the likes of Man Utd, City, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and still got points.

So why do I keep thinking I need Kane?

Kane is part of the template, but you don't need him - yet. Monitor Vardy and Ighalo closely.

I might consider benching Barkley rather than Mahrez. I don't expect Mahrez to score as much as last week, but I think he might have a better chance than Barkley (says the Barkley owner).

Harry Kane has quite low goal invovlment, around 30% I think. And he has just 1 shot on target in the last 2.

Can someone convince me to captain him without using the words 'ownership' or 'due'?

Tottenham play at 4pm on sunday so you get to use your captain right at the end of the weekend and Spurs are home to Toon. Surely it'll be an easy win with 2-3 goals. In the long run, Kane will be largely involved in those goals.

      Newcastle at home

      Newcastle goals conceded away

      Swansea - 2
Man Utd - 0 (well that's not really a surprise anymore)
      West Ham - 2
      Chelsea - 2
      Man City - 6
      Sunderland -3
Bournemouth - 0 (even they don't know how)
      Palace - 5

In short Newcastle are pretty terrible away. I'd also be more interested in Kane's goal involvement in the last 6 GWs

    DDG
    Janmaat, Moreno, Cedric
    Ozil, Barkley, Mahrez, KDB, Firmino

If I get Kane in then it will give me another captaincy option but will also open up a benching headache. Aguero being injured makes it easy to stick him on the bench, but if I did bring Kane in who would you bench??

Yeah, he's on fire. Getting rid next week for sure though with Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Southampton (away) City and Swansea (away) over the next six. He'll probably score a few but I've got 7.something in the bank and I'd like to bring in a captaincy material striker for him. Measuring the risk of doing it this week, Kane looks like a good (c) option at home to Newcastle and I do like a Sunday evening captain.

For the next few weeks, Silva, Ramsey or Bartley?

Continuing the Arsenal attacking discussion from previous pages, with Santi out for months and Wilshere not due back till January, do we think Giroud and Walcott will really see that much rotation?

    ------------Giroud
    Sanchez--Ozil--Walcott
    ----Ramsey---Flamini

I see this being our starting 11 almost every week. Campbell and AOC will get some minutes, but I can't see either starting many (if any) games.

With the exception of Flamini, all 5 of that front 6 look great fpl options, and with so many options, will the points be spread around too much, or will a couple of them stand out above the rest?

I think you are spot on with the team lineup here.

Ramsey looks like standing out with consistent returns. Sánchez always seems streaky but explosive. Walcott interestingly seems subdued this season..

Yeah, I'm strongly considering Bolasie -> Ramsey (-4) this week.

The problem is that Wenger prefers not to play Sanchez and Wally on either wing. He says it upsets the balance.

When Alexis returns it may go back to Wally getting 60-70 and Giroud coming on against tired legs, as before.

Agreed with this too. However will he trust AoC or Campbell to play regularly?

based on current from i'd defo play Campbell ahead of Walcott.

Campbell tracks back for one thing.

Agree, but before he had Ramsey to play on one of the flanks, whereas now he only has AOC or Campbell, and they are both in a similar mould to Walcott, imo.

I can't see AOC or Campbell getting starts over Walcott or Giroud when all are fit.

Arteta when he returns could push Ramsey out wide. And when is Wilshere due back

    Butland (Ruddy)

Alderweireld - Moreno - Bellerín (Dawson - Darmian)
Barkley - Mahrez - Özil - Willian (King)
    Lukaku - Kane - Agüero

    1 FT / 0.6 ITB

    Should I do:

    Aguero to
    A. Giroud
    B. Benteke

    Willian to
    1. Coutinho
    2. Ramsey
    3. Sterling
    4. De bruyne

If you think Giroud and Sterling for a hit you can say A3, or if just Benteke you can say B.

    Thanks!

Is it worth doing Ighalo (or even Vardy) to Kane for free? I have the exact money. Lukaku is my 3rd striker.
