Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud both find the net as Arsenal move to the summit. Jordan Henderson serves up a goal and assist in his first league start under Jurgen Klopp, Craig Dawson notches for the Baggies, whilst Steve McClaren’s super subs end Tottenham’s 14-match unbeaten streak as Newcastle climb out of the basement.

Ramsey Nets Again for Buoyant Gunners

Arsenal climbed to the top of the table after securing their first three points in an as many road ties by way of a 2-0 win over Aston Villa. Buoyed by a hat-trick against Olympiacos in midweek, Olivier Giroud converted from the penalty spot in the eighth minute to maintain his fine recent form – the France international now boasts six goals in eight outings and nine in his previous nine away matches.

Aaron Ramsey (8.1) doubled the visitors’ advantage with his second successive league goal since being handed a central midfield role. The Wales international is relishing the opportunity to operate from a deep-lying berth and ranks joint-top among midfielders for attempts (11) since returning from injury in Gameweek 14. Priced 1.6 below Mesut Ozil (9.7) – who bagged his 13th assist of the campaign at Villa Park – Ramsey offers an enticing alternative to the German playmaker by virtue of his superior goal threat. Theo Walcott (one our this Gameweek) earned the assist for Giroud’s strike but harbours less appeal due to his rotation risk.

Fantasy owners of the Gunners’ backline profited from their first clean sheet in five match-ups. Although the North Londoners’ home clash against Manchester City next Gameweek should prove a stern test of their title credentials, they do lay claim to the second-best defensive record (five goals conceded) at home. Moreover, Arsenal remain at the Emirates for three of the next four Gameweeks (MCI, sou, BOU, NEW), which bodes well for their shut out prospects.

No End in Sight for Villa’s Struggles

Remi Garde’s side extended their winless run to 15 matches – a spell of poor form that’s only matched by York throughout the Football League. Despite mustering 18 attempts against the Gunners, only Norwich City notched fewer accurate shots (two) than the Villans, illustrating their lack of quality in the final third. Nonetheless, the West Midlanders enjoy an excellent schedule through to Gameweek 26 (new, WHU, nor, sun, CRY, LEI, wba, whu, NOR), which could throw up a couple of bargain differentials to consider for our subs benches should Garde somehow manage to turn their toils around.

Henderson Makes His Mark

Divock Origi netted in the 95th minute against West Bromwich Albion to rescue a point, strengthening his claim for a starting berth over Christian Benteke. The latter chalked up the joint-most attempts (six) among forwards over the weekend but failed to test Boaz Myhill once. Couple this with the fact that Daniel Sturridge is suffering with another niggling injury and it’s fair to say that Liverpool’s forward line lacks Fantasy intrigue at present.

Jordan Henderson assisted Origi’s late strike and opened the scoring for the Reds, alerting us to his differential potential at the 6.5 mark. Indeed, Christian Eriksen (seven) was the only midfielder to card more attempts (five) than the Englishman, who racked up a 13-point haul in his first league start under Jurgen Klopp. Rounding off Liverpool’s attacking output, Adam Lallana popped up with his second assist in five appearances. Both men are well placed to produce further returns as the Merseysiders gear up for a favourable quartet of fixtures (wat, LEI, sun, whu). At the back, it’s one clean sheet in seven now for the Merseysiders, though Alberto Moreno owners were again left disappointed – the Spaniard created five scoring opportunities for his team-mates but failed to bring home the points.

Baggies Backline in the Points

West Brom’s extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a third consecutive draw. Craig Dawson drew the Baggies level in the first half with his second goal of the season, while Jonas Olsson – having been thwarted by an offside flag earlier in the encounter – headed home 17 minutes from time. Although Tony Pulis’ troops conceded in each of their previous six outings, their next batch of fixtures (BOU, swa, NEW, STO) looks more conducive to shut outs. Dawson (5.1) is doubtless the safe route into their rearguard, though, with Olsson (4.3) only starting as Jonny Evans was again shifted into central midfield to cover for Claudio Yacob, who missed out due to a family bereavement.

Chris Brunt and Salomon Rondon grabbed an assist piece for their efforts. Given that West Brom have racked up just 16 goals, place bottom for attempts (140), bottom for shots inside the box (83) and second-bottom for shots on target (48) throughout the course of the campaign, most Fantasy managers will be content to focus on Pulis’ defence.

Magpies Building Momentum

Spurred on by their 2-0 home win over Liverpool, Newcastle United mounted a second-half comeback to run out 2-1 victors against Tottenham Hotspur. Aleksandar Mitrovic poked home Chancel Mbemba’s stooped header from inches out, before assisting Ayoze Perez’s 93rd minute winner. Both forwards had to settle for cameo roles at White Hart Lane but will be knocking on the manager’s door ahead of the visit of Villa next Gameweek. With four home clashes in six (AVL, EVE, wba, ars, MUN, WHU), Steve McClaren’s troops now have the chance to continue their ascent up the table, though with question marks remaining up front, Georginio Wijnaldum (6.9) looks the most secure option, having scored all seven of his goals at St James’.

Kane Blanks as Spurs Slip to Defeat

Spurs’ 14-match unbeaten streak came to an end at the hands of the Magpies. Eric Dier broke the deadlock with his third goal this term, but the hosts faded in the second half and were unable to capitalise on their territorial dominance. The Lilywhites notched just one clean sheet in their previous seven league ties, but the likes of Dier and Toby Alderweireld are compensating for that shortcoming with their penchant for set-piece goals.

Christian Eriksen graced the scoreboard with his seventh assist of the campaign. As mentioned above, the Denmark international gave his utmost to arrest a seven-match barren streak, firing off two more attempts (seven) than any midfielder. Eriksen is yet to score a goal from open play this term, but there’s definite scope for that to change during Spurs’ agreeable trio of upcoming fixtures (sou, NOR, wat). Harry Kane owners, meanwhile, were left frustrated after the frontman blanked for the third successive league outing – worryingly, he’s managed just three touches in the box and two close-range attempts over that period.

That teams like Gent have better hopes to get to the QF's than teams like Juve, Roma and Arsenal. I'd have happily watched Gent draw Real Madrid. No offence, I have nothing against Gent in particular, I just want that the advancing teams are either the strongest teams or smaller teams that advance NOT because they play each other BUT because they beat the strong teams.

Okay thats true but those big teams need to qualifie then as first or win their competition they've got in their own hands imo it's like the draw for a UC or WC imo, could be wrong

When two big ones are drawn in same group with each other, both of them cannot finish top.

E.g. PSG and Real, Bayern and Arsenal, City and Juve.

And that's just bad luck, when there are groups like PSV, ManU, Wolfsburg, CSKA; or Zenit, Valencia, Lyon, Gent.

Because then the QF's would be presumably tight, and there would NOT be

                        1) an advantage to a QF-playing big club that can beat a small club 5-0 on first leg and use the 2nd leg just to prepare the semi's (e.g. not play players who might get a suspension for accumulation of yellows, or even have them take yellows in the first leg to sit out the 2nd leg);

                        2) a chance that some team gets to semi-finals, let alone to the final, by playing only weak opponents, just to be thrashed easily by one of the big clubs.

I just hope that the things are pretty even for the big teams when they approach the final.

Let me point out that last 4 seasons, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern München have been in semis every single time. The 4th team has changed (and always made the final). It's not as if at least 2 out of these 3 teams didn't get there again, unless they play each other before semis. But it is infinitely nicer that they beat the APOEL's and Gent's in the round of 16 and have to play the likes of Arsenal, Juve and PSG in QF's (e.g. 2012/2013), rather than other way around (e.g. 2011/2012). Because then there's some realistic chance that the Arsenal, Juve or PSG could get in the SF's, while also no chance that any club gets a free pass from QF's.

I just want it to be competitive. The competition is simply too big now, too many uncompetitive matches, so at least the final stages should be competitive. But when it's this big, there's a lot of room for bad draws to ruin any chance that it would get competitive for all in semis. There's a chance, for example, that Benfica-Zenit winner will play the Wolfsburg-Gent winner, and then we have one of them in semis without playing any of the big ones on their way there. And that's just dull for the semis.

Let's make it clear: I have nothing against the surprisers advancing, as long as it is because they surprise the strongest teams, and not because they are given an easy road to final stages by chance.

You convinced me, but just as someone from Gent I like it that we play against someone who we aren't completly chanceless i guess. But from a neutral point I totally have to agree altough I would loved it if Gent played against Chelsea too bad I guess

Draw Bayern Munich in the group, all you can do is end 2nd, and then draw Barcelona. It is like the UCL gods are not happy with Arsenal facing one of the teams every season, they want them both.

Arsenal have to prove they can get by these teams to be a champion. It's not hope and pray we get an easy draw to the finals. You have to prove it on the field and thus far they haven't been able to separate themselves from those 2 clubs.

Help appreciated here for a draft league side...

      Courtois

      Dawson/Moreno/Baines

      Wijnaldum/Deulofeu/Yaya Toure/Oscar

      Kane/Zarate/Mitrovic

      Bench: Sanchez/Diouf/Koscielny/Alderweireld/Firmino

Set up right and who to captain is what I'm basically asking. Also, I can bring in one available player. Which team to look at?

Would appreciate help as this is a knock out quarter final round!

Another draw that completely sucks. This more than probably any before. tl;dr version: all the really big ones drawn against each other, almost all the small ones against each other.

      Gent - Wolfsburg
      Benfica-Zenit

This means that two out of these four teams will be in QF's, which means that two of the QF pairs will be incredibly uneven and not worth seeing, and one big club will get a free route to the SF's.

I would almost add Kiev - City. Sorry, but City's European pedigree is poor and I totally expect them to crash out on QF's against just anybody (except the winner of Benfica-Zenit, or Gent if they can beat Wolfsburg).

Even PSV drew the smallest of the big ones, although fortunately we can be pretty sure that Atletico will destroy them.

And we have Arsenal - Barcelona and Chelsea - PSG again. Maybe there was a couple of years without an Arsenal - Barcelona, but this is third year in row of Chelsea - PSG.

I think Wolfsburg will make it tough for any team to make it to the SF's, but ultimately their opponent, unless it is the winner of either Kiev - City or Benfica - Zenit pair, will advance.

Let's put it this way: Arsenal and Chelsea are teams that at least beat the big ones, such as Real, Barcelona, Bayern, PSG, in a big match, and hence can make the finals, could even win it (Chelsea did just a couple of seasons ago). Wolfsburg and Zenit, this year, just cannot. I'm not saying Arsenal and Chelsea will do it, probably won't, but they are potential contenders. Zenit and Wolfsburg just aren't.

Yeah I'd back Chelsea against Wolfsburg/Zenit, but impossible to say the way they've played this year. Everton massively outclassed Wolfsburg last year, an on-form Arsenal would demolish them.

Chelsea might well lose to both, I'd bet for Wolfsburg against them, but that's not my point. The point is that Chelsea could challenge Real Madrid or Bayern, just as they will challenge PSG. Neither Benfica, nor Zenit, nor Gent, nor PSV, nor Wolfsburg would have a chance against, for example PSG (well, Wolfsburg at a stretch, if Trapp continues to play as he has so far). But Chelsea will. Even if in all likelihood, without drastic changes, they'll lose.

Yes, a couple of very good players. And then? That doesn't make CL contenders. Benfica is a traditional EL club that got through because of an incredibly weak group.

Wolfsburg is by far the strongest out of them, but this is their first season in CL with this team, and let's face it, they're not going to win it.

Scoreboard journalism. They scored twice from 6 shots, of which only one from a good position. Atletico had 15 shots in the box, of which 3 in 6-yards-box (22 total), even hit the post from close range. And this despite that Atletico scored the first goal. That was one of the most uneven matches of the season, and a freak result.

Just read this. Think we are getting a bit carried away here, taking shots at my 'credibility above and all for a silly typo.

I am very aware you are one of the most well rounded and knowledgeable posters on these boards and I understand the point you are trying to make above; as I also don't agree with the draw.

However, in a strange way, your response helps prove my point even further, in that anything is possible in this sport, so don't discount the 'smaller' teams just because of their history.

That's all I was trying to get at.

Discounting a team in one match is wholly different from what my initial post was all about. Gladbach managed to sneak a win against Bayern. But they wouldn't be CL contenders. That's what this was about. It was about chances to challenge for the title of the biggest club competition, where they have to play big matches against the true ogres of football, such as Real and Barcelona. E.g. Wolfsburg could win Arsenal in one match, but they will be thrashed if they play two legs against Barcelona or Real, while I say that Arsenal can challenge either of those teams.

I'll rephrase. Santi with his ability to turn in tight areas, retain possession and win fouls would definitely be the choice against a tougher opponent. Ramsey ' s forward runs and general energy are fantastic though. A nice problem to have when both are fit!

Also i think Ramsey Ozil and Gru have a great understanding between them. Arsenal will score more goals with Ramsey central i reckon.

Santi is more disciplined and is better at getting out of a touch situation. Everything else, Ramsey edges him. In my opinion.

Yeah Ramsey is that Lampard-esque midfielder, hard to say because he's not played there much recently. Both excellent players.

Thankfully, we just have to stop Neymar and Suarez. Messi does not score against Cech anyway. 😉

Yep, not much they could do really. Couple of poor results in the group but they would have finished 2nd anyway, and then draw possibly the greatest club side I have ever seen (along with Guardiola's Barcelona). The PL has to be their focus.

Well yes, indeed. But I suppose most players are at some risk this time of year.

He's been playing loads lately, but Chelsea are still paying Cahill and Terry to hang around.
I'm tempted to say yes, but I don't know Terrys form

Cheers. I am tempted to get a Chelsea defender for Otamendi, just sussing out my options.
Iva is also an interesting premium differential if he regains his attacking prowess.

With Kane's lack of touches in the box etc... i'm playing Van Dijk this week could be a shut out, maybe, hopefully.

It's too bad we'll have ties like this one at this stage. Would much rather see this in QF's.

Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals. They all mean the same to a club who is serious about winning it. Better than having a big club cruising to the final playing all the minnows.

Juve is one of the teams that actually stands a chance to beat Bayern.

Bet number 2 is in place..

Wijnaldum vs Hazard(+6) over the next two gameweeks.

      You're on KoL.

Haha cool, so over the next 2 gameweeks..

If Wijnaldum scores more than 6 points more than Hazard, you gotta change your name to...
          "KOL: Irish Madridista beat me"

If Hazard scores within 6 points, or even better than Wijnaldum, then I'll change my name to:
"IM: Kings of Lyon beat me"

Keep gravs the same for recognition of the punishment?

The loser to change their name on Monday the 4th of January so, for 2 weeks.
