Just one player fell off the Suspension Tightrope over the weekend’s nine fixtures. Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell was the guilty party, earning a fifth booking of the season for a foul on Pedro early in the second half of the Black Cats’ defeat at Chelsea.

Rodwell’s caution comes in just his fourth league start and with just 647 minutes under his belt this term, he has incurred the referee’s wrath every 130 minutes – in comparison, Jack Colback, who sits on seven yellows, has been booked every 157 minutes.

The midfielder will therefore miss a nostalgic trip back to the Etihad on Boxing Day before being back in contention in time for the Gameweek 19 home encounter with Liverpool.

Elsewhere, we saw a quartet of new arrivals to the Tightrope as the disciplinary halls were decked to excess in true festive fashion. Gary O’Neil and Jose Fonte were the early additions from Saturday’s 3pm kick offs – along with their respective team-mates Seb Bassong, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse, they will need to avoid another booking over the next two rounds of fixtures.

In yesterday’s late match, Aston Villa’s Ashley Westwood and goal scorer Jordan Ayew both collected a fourth caution of the campaign. This means there are now 15 clubs represented by at least one player who is a booking short of a single-match ban – they have to be on their best behaviour until New Year’s Day, when the threshold is extended to ten yellows.

Ahead of tomorrow evening’s clash between Arsenal and City, then, there are now 74 players still at risk of a one-match ban – 25 sit on the Tightrope, 41 require cards in both their remaining matches and a further eight from tomorrow’s Emirates encounter could yet succumb to suspension by earning three consecutive cautions. Essentially, then, every club still has players in danger.

In terms of further suspensions, West Brom duo James McClean and Salomon Rondon will sit out the next three Gameweeks after both were dismissed for violent conduct during Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth. The pair will therefore be missing the remainder of the festive programme against teams in the bottom half of the table, with a visit to Swansea on Boxing Day preceding back-to-back home clashes against Newcastle and Stoke.

Post-match, Tony Pulis was highly critical of both players, putting McClean’s challenge down to retaliation, before slamming Rondon’s altercation with the Cherries’ Dan Gosling:

“It was a reckless challenge from McClean. The disappointing thing for me was that 30 seconds before that, Smith went over the top of the ball and caught McClean on the ankle. McClean has not let that go and has gone after him with the next challenge, unfortunately, and you can’t condone that. If Mike Dean had given a free-kick for the first challenge then the sending-off would not have happened…It (Rondon’s behaviour) was crazy, absolutely stupid. Rondon can’t do things like that. We’ve never had any inkling that he’s had anything like that in him since he has joined us. That’s the first time we’ve seen him react like that.

Only one player returns from suspension this week, with Leicester’s Robert Huth available for selection again after he served a one-match ban in the 3-2 win at Everton. Bastian Schweinsteiger sits out the last of a three-match suspension this time out as United make their way to Stoke.

Tho those of you who advised me to get Alli instead of Stanislas (I can only remember FFSAddicts atm), I thank you very much.

A very reliable sub for my little problem called Hazard.

Kane/Luk/Vardy and would you drop Barkley right now for Alexis?

I really don't know. Currently with Kane/Luk/Vardy and Haz. Haz is surely the fall guy for me, but up top, I'm really torn. However I think Kun if fit is indispensable so maybe Vardy needs to go

How much longer can Ighalo get lucky for?

(The answer is, as always, until he's in my team at which point he's no longer lucky and just a damn fine player)

I often secretly feel that I am unlucky and if luck went the right way I would be top of the world... Then I realise a) I am wrong, and b) most people think like that. We're an arrogant, egotistical, self absorbed species, unable to see our own flaws and mistakes, overly proud of our successes, as can be perfectly exemplified by a typical post match score check...

                Well, that escalated quickly 😀

Morning all. I've plummeted from 14k to 65k over 2 weeks (with 3 to play tonight), need to arrest this decline. 2FTs and 1.3 ITB.

    DDG/Hennessey
    Bellerin/Moreno/Alde/Nyom/Dawson
    KDB/Ozil/Mahrez/Coutinho/Gosling
    Kane/Lukaku/Giroud

Do I admit defeat with Ighalo and get him in for Giroud, and maybe get Aguero? Or is that too risky with Kane having Norwich/Aguero having no form yet?

On the slide myself, mostly for the same reasons as you (no Ighalo, dodging clean sheets...)

I also have 2 FTs and a chunk in the bank so I'd love to hear a good plan.

My priority is Ramsey and then maybe Ighalo/Aguero but my Vardy/Lukaku/Kane frontline isn't doing a great deal wrong. If I'm honest it's Coutinho I don't like in your team but I'm not sure who you'd replace him with.

Giroud is a decent option but Ighalo and Ramsey look a lot better than Giroud and Coutinho.

Presumably it also adds to your money in the bank to make it easy to jump on Aguero if he does look "essential"? 😉

I haven't owned Watford all season - lesson learned!
Ighalo has always been a back-up plan when Vardy gets injured.

Vardy, Lukaku and Kane are all in good form, so I do think it comes down to fixtures. Ighalo has the worst fixtures. If you think his form/fixture combo outweighs Vardy, Lukaku or Kane's, then go for it, but I wouldn't do it for a hit.

I know, truly appalling - seem to only be able to turn it on in the traditionally "big games". Coutinho was invisible, the problem is if you ditch him he can suddenly explode (as Granville found out).

Thoughts on Wijnaldum and Coutinho this weekend? Didn't get to watch the games.

    Help!

    2 FT (0.1 ITB)

    Current team is;

    Butland / (Hennessey)
    Kolarov / Moreno / Bellerin / (Janmaat) / (Targett)
    Mane / Ayew / Barkley / Silva /(Haz)
    Vardy / Lukaku / Kane

    Any suggestions?

I don't understand people's obsession with underlying stats such as shots in box.
I would much rather have a player who scores 2 goals from 3 shots than a guy who scores 1 goal from 10 shots

    1. Whats the Huth
      • 10 Years

Underlying stats said Ighalo would keep up his scoring rate - regardless of whom he plays against - and so it proved

Because i think more than 80% of goals this season have came from inside the box. Hence the importance of that stat

      1. John t penguin

but it is irrelevant if you don't consider how good at shooting he is. Someone like mane is so erratic at finishing he needs 6/7 sib just to get one decent one

Well thats why you look at both SoT and SitB . I am not too keen on those stats, since they can be misleading, but it showed that Vardy and Ighalo will sustain their returns and it has held true tho

              • 11 Years
              10 years, 3 months ago

I look at SoT first and then SiB just as reference to see if the player shoots more from inside the box or outside....SiB alone is quite irrelevant imo

People can get a bit obsessed and stop looking at actual performance but they're definitely useful to judge sustainability and gauge if someone's goalscoring is a flash in the pan (Martial) or likely to continue (Vardy/Ighalo)

    6. Sjaugen
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 3 months ago

You gotta shoot to score. And it's more statistically easier to keep a high shot rate than high conversion rate. Plus when you shoot a lot, you're being at the correct spot a lot

      1. Eden Hazardous
        • 11 Years

You use the stats to predict the future, not assess the past. It is unlikely that the guy scoring 2 in 3 (66% scoring rate) will keep that up. It is more likely that the guy that play for the team that just created 10 chances for him will continue to score.

Horrible GW with a score of 40 could end up great if Aguero, Silva, KDB and Özil makes tonight's game a match with lots of goals.

Thinking of doing KDB -> Ramsey unless there are any injuries tonight, anyone agree/disagree?

    Zouma Moreno Dawson (Richards Cameron)
    KDB Silva Özil Mahrez (Fletcher)

Have a free transfer and enough to upgrade either Kane or Lukaku to Aguero. Looking at fixtures, surely Lukaku --> Aguero is the way to go (assuming Aguero plays a 75+ mins tonight and is looking sharp of course)?

It all boils down to how Aguero looks tonight. If he's off the pace then nothing changes - but if he looks reasonable, then it's game on. Lukaku/Aguero/Kane may be the optimum trio - but it'll be a ballsy move to sell either Ighalo or Vardy to facilitate it.

Then your best bet is to hope Aguero looks a bit stale. Otherwise it's a big decision - an Aguero (c) v Sunderland is a potential rank changer. If I had to choose, it'd be Kane who goes because of the fixtures after NOR - but it's a risk.
