It’s time to pop out to the Weekly Shop this evening, as we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our weekend lineups.

The player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

A shut-out at Villa is hardly a notable achievement but after a third away clean sheet in five matches, it appears Arsene Wenger may have established a pragmatic approach to picking up precious points on the road. The visit to a Southampton side that have scored just twice in their last five gives Petr Cech (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 7.6m) the chance to earn another shut-out – the Gunners keeper has averaged over three saves per match so far and is now joint fourth in the shot-stoppers leaderboard with Boaz Myhill.

Spurs picked up a sixth clean sheet of the season in their trip to St Mary’s and a seventh is on the cards as promoted Norwich visit White Hart Lane. The Canaries scored twice at Old Trafford but failed to net in their previous two away trips and have registered less shots on target (eight) than any side over the last four Gameweeks. Eric Dier (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.9m) struck a third goal of the season in their last outing at home – it’s worth noting that all three of his goals have arrived in front of their own fans this season. Toby Alderweireld (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8.2m) also does well at the Lane, having scored twice there so far.

Riyad Mahrez’ (FantasyBet 6.5m, PremierPunt 9.1m) extraordinary season continued with a brace at Goodison, with nine of the Algerian’s 13 goals arriving on the road. With a visit to Anfield on Boxing Day, the midfielder should prosper against a shaky Liverpool defence that’s been hit hard by injuries and has managed just one clean sheet in the last eight Gameweeks.

City’s defeat at Arsenal was another blow in a poor run of away form, though a plum home fixture against Sunderland should allow them to recover some poise, having won seven of nine matches at the Etihad. Kevin de Bruyne (FantasyBet 10.5m, PremierPunt 10.2m) has now blanked in five of his last six outings but clearly prefers home comforts, with three goals and four assists in seven appearances in front of his own fans. The return of Sergio Aguero (FantasyBet 13m, PremierPunt 16m) should reignite City’s title tilt, though, and whilst we don’t expect the Argentine to last from start to finish, he should still have enough time to do the damage against a team that have conceded 12 goals in their last four away trips.

Harry Kane (FantasyBet 9.5m, PremierPunt 13.5m) scored just once in the opening nine league Gameweeks and, after netting seven times in the subsequent four, there were fears that a three-match barren streak had halted his progress. A weekend strike at Southampton suggests he may be about to embark on another purple patch, though, and with Norwich up next at the Lane, he looks a strong candidate for our frontlines this weekend.

Poundstretchers

Slaven Bilic is still missing four of his first-choice attacking players so looks to be focusing on resilience, with three consecutive goalless draws for the Hammers. A trip to Villa Park represents a good chance of another clean sheet, with Villa failing to score in five of their eight matches at home so far – keeper Adrian (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 6.9m) provides a safe route into the backline, though full-back Aaron Creswell (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 7.4m) offers a chance of attacking returns for a little more outlay.

Scott Dann (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 7.4m) has scored in two of Crystal Palace’s last three away trips as Alan Pardew’s men visit a Bournemouth side that have been breached 11 times in their last four home fixtures. Furthermore, the Eagles have been somewhat unfortunate only to earn a single clean sheet on their travels, bearing in mind they have conceded just seven times on the road, the joint-best record in the league so far.

Only West Ham (101) have conceded more shots on target away from home than Norwich (100), making a double-up of Spurs attackers a viable option. Dele Alli’s (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.9m) recent form in the number 10 role peaked against Southampton, with a goal and assist at St Mary’s making the youngster a potential alternative to Harry Kane.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (FantasyBet 7m, PremierPunt 10.7m) has had a disappointing season, with just two goals and a single assist served up so far. The Icelander has made a strong case for inclusion since the departure of Garry Monk, though – he’s fired 10 attempts on goal in the last two matches, compared to Andre Ayew’s four efforts, highlighting his points potential ahead of a home encounter with West Brom.

Villa must start picking up points if they are to avoid relegation, with Remi Garde’s basement-dwellers now sitting ten points behind fourth-bottom Newcastle. If they do manage to breach the West Ham backline, it’s likely to be Jordan Ayew (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 7.1m) with the breakthrough, given that the Ghana international has scored four of his side’s six goals over the last eight rounds of matches.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the weekend. I’ll return on Friday with a further assessment of this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

          Couple factors

          Pros

Fixture. If you follow bookies, Spurs are heavily favored this week, Everton surprisingly is not.

Alli's average position last few weeks has been higher than Eriksen and sometimes Kane.

Norwich's defensive weakness is down the middle (weak spine)

Own % (Alli is a differential to Barkley)

Personally, I don't fancy Barkley as a player, he's been fortunate this season.

And I really like Alli the more and more I watch him

          Cons:

Barkley's stats are better last 4 gw (in terms of total shots)
Alli likely to get pulled at 70-75 mins.

I can do Kane to Aguero for free, price rise or not. Debating this as would prefer Aguero (c) even with 65-70 minutes over Kane (c) but does seem silly especially with Vardy and Hazard both injury doubts in my side.

    Hennessey ; Alli - Ogbonna - Dawson

    I know, let's buy Aguero.

80/20 in favour of playing, Howe normally keeps his cards close to his chest on line ups. Said they have niggles (him and King) so will expect them to start.

Pugh could Nick the start but he's not fully fit either.

Actually last week I was sure I would get Aguero this gw. But right now I'm not so sure... My front 3 is Kane, Lukaku and Vardy. Lukaku and Vardy are in a hot streak, so I can't remove them. Kane has a pretty decent fixture, and we are still not sure about Aguero's fitness, last week he couldn't take more than 60 minutes. Considering all this, I think I will just sit and watch what he will do vs Sunderland and then decide if I should pick him or not. There is always the chance I will regret doing nothing though...

    Don't Wham Your Christmas ...

Last Christmas, I gave Agüero a part
But the very next day, his hamstring gave way
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

    Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me Agüero, will you surprise me?
Well it's been that year, for most a demise, see?

I posted the team sheet and sent it
With a note saying "I Believe You" - I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you scored for me now, that hamstring's extreme ...

Last Christmas, I gave Agüero a part
But the very next day, his hamstring gave way
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (Sánchez)

    BY GEORGE!!! 😉

I want to try get into it over Christmas but my team is shockingly bad, any tips?

    Speroni
    Pocognoli - J.Evans - Olsson - Cedric
    Ayew - Lanzini - Blind - S.deJong - Thauvin
    Zarate

Any tips for cheapish players to start off with?

Play a few games, save until you can Mahrez's second in form

Wait until upgrades see him go from 76 to 82 and his price go from nothing to lots, sell him and buy a better team

Don't really see the relevance in this.

The tax avoidance is done unethically but through legal loops hole by putting sales through foreign jurisdictions in their case putting sales through Luxembourg.

Anyone know whether Oscar is likely to get solid playing time at this point? I thought he looked great last game, but worry he won't get 70+ a game, maybe Pedro would be the better option? Or just wait, but I have 6.4M and a FT burning a hole in my pocket 🙂

@Axolotl, I copy here my reply to you from the first page, since you seem to have missed it:

Didn't find that article interesting, to be honest. Information wise it was very trivial and just written in an extremely biased manner. E.g. the writing about CL football and "non-competitive" continental leagues showed a great lack of memory, as well as of understanding of how leagues work (e.g. the claim that 2nd placed Monaco being closer to relegation than to leaders PSG is because of lack of equality in the league, presupposes wrongly that Monaco has got a low point tally because of PSG, which is silly since they like all clubs have only played PSG once).

See this from last season, for example:

    http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/05/10/premier-league-is-less-compelling-than-other-top-european-leagues/

The point about that £5billion+ TV deal changing the whole footballing world is simply obvious. It was that for sports writers at least outside England already before the season. More important than distribution of money is in this case really the amount of money. ManU is still massively richer than Leicester. Leicester is a bit of an anomaly, still, because there are still many continental sides richer than them, and they're one of the least rich PL sides too. But, for example, only French sides richer than Newcastle and Aston Villa are Monaco and PSG, the only Italians the Milanese clubs, Napoli and Juventus. There are, then, enough great players for even the poorer PL clubs despite the big ones taking the cream of the crop.

the point i took from it (and maybe other articles that have influenced my thinking) is that fair tv money spending in england has helped make the league closer and fairer by distributing wealth.

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years

Fair tv money spending is all good and well, but that really makes a significant difference only to Spain. The big part, that distinguishes PL from all other leagues is that the money is in abundance relative to the other leagues. See this:

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3281374/Premier-League-clubs-earn-Europe-s-48-smallest-leagues-TV-money-boosts-England-s-elite.html

The TV money spending has been very equal for a long time in England, but still the league has been anything but equal, both financially and sportively.

E.g. in France, after 17 GW's (the current state of PL), Angers were 2nd. They don't have even Championship level budget, but they're still very much at evens with Monaco, who boast one of the 20 biggest budgets in the world. Leicester is a similar anomaly in that they're significantly poorer than most of the PL, definitely significantly poorer than the likes of Chelsea and ManU, and their ability to compete with them doesn't come from their financial equality with these clubs, because there is none. however, their financial inequality relative to clubs in other leagues helps them to get quality players to compete in the league. After all, the likes of Kanté, Behrami and Payet are not really that far in quality from the likes of Coquelin, Fernandinho and Mata.

Meanwhile, what explains PSG's massive marginal is not only that they've finally grown into a great team (notice, that last season it took them far until Spring before they took the lead of the league for the first time, only after their CL clash with Chelsea) but that in that league now all clubs other than PSG are in very even, the top of them very destabilised from the last season, so they all lose points against each other and the group of teams from 18th to 2nd place is very tight.

Norwich may have only conceded 1 against Everton but they were far from solid, it should've been 5-0 at half time! Kane is a solid candidate this week.

              a) Bolasie + Ighalo

Would you spend a transfer on this defence?

              Kolarov, Moreno, Evans, Nyom, Wollscheid

              Maybe Moreno -> Alderweireld?

              Start 1

              A) Hennesey bou a
              B) elliot everton h

B save points is tempting me and Bournemouth seem to have had a change in luck...

              Thanks
