Having analysed the defenders and midfielders over the last few days, we complete our look at the updated Watchlist rankings with a run through the latest movements up front. Man City’s Sergio Aguero is back on top of our ladder after scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 win at Watford last time out, whilst Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy slip a little with concerns over their availability for Gameweek 21.

Sergio Aguero returns to the summit for the first time in a number of months after showing some flashes of his best form against Watford and Everton in the Capital One Cup in midweek. With City facing four home matches in the next six (EVE, CPL, whm, sun, LEI, TOT), the 13.1-priced forward certainly looks to have the platform to plunder the goals. His underlying statistics have also been impressive over the last two Gameweeks, totalling 19 penalty area touches, joint-third among front men, while also managing seven shots from inside the box. His 14% ownership will hope he is left out for Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Norwich, then, with two Premier League matches next week. Given Raheem Sterling and Kelechi Iheanacho were both unused substitutes on Wednesday night, those wishes could well be met.

Harry Kane remains in second position in our latest update, with Spurs’ favourable upcoming schedule (LEI, SUN, cpl, nor, WAT) firmly in mind. The England international, available at 9.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), has only registered five penalty box touches over the last two Gameweeks, but, having averaged 7.4 points per appearance in his previous last five matches at White Hart Lane, Kane has to be backed to produce on home turf over the coming period.

With two tricky away fixtures next week (mci, che), and having picked up an ankle injury on Wednesday night, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (9.3) slips down the third spot on our ladder. Although Toffees boss Roberto Martinez confirmed earlier today that the Belgian is recovering quickly, his stock has to take something of a hit. Favourable fixtures (SWA, NEW, sto, WBA) do follow, however, whilst there’s no doubt the former Chelsea striker has offered outstanding value over the past few months, racking up 10 goals and three assists in his last 10 appearances.

Another one of the form forwards, Watford’s Odion Ighalo, keeps his place on the Watchlist this week, having found the back of the net in difficult fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham over the festive period, while the Hornets upcoming fixtures (sot, swa, NEW, CHE) are fairly reasonable. Still setting us back only 6.4 in FPL, the Nigerian looks set to continue to offer fantastic value for Fantasy bosses as a cheap third forward.

On the back of three consecutive blanks, and with a question mark over his fitness for the match at Tottenham on Wednesday, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy continues to fall down our rankings. The former non-league striker underwent minor groin surgery at the start of the week, but is thought to have a chance of featuring in Gameweek 21. The now 7.5-rated forward is the most transferred out player so far this week with over 163,000 sales ahead of a difficult run of fixtures (tot, avl, STO, LIV, mci, ars) for Claudio Ranieri’s men, with many Fantasy managers perhaps favouring Riyad Mahrez as their route into the Foxes attack.

Having registered attacking returns in six of his last eight outings, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud keeps his spot around halfway up our ladder. The Frenchman hasn’t delivered a single double-digit score over that period, however, and with a testing schedule over the next three Gameweeks (liv, sto, CHE), his prospects in the short-term at least don’t look particularly bright. Rotation could also be a concern for the 9.2-priced forward should Arsene Wenger look to utilise Theo Walcott up front once Alexis Sanchez returns from injury.

Should any FPL bosses be on the lookout for a differential for their three-man forward lines, Chelsea’s Diego Costa could be the man for the job. The Spain international rises a few places in our latest refresh after registering a goal and assist in the Blues’ clinical 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace. The champions face four home fixtures over the next six Gameweeks (WBA, EVE, ars, wat, MUN, NEW), and with a price tag of 10.7 in FPL, and an ownership of just 6%, the former Atletico Madrid striker could well be worth a roll of the dice for those looking to make up lost ground in mini-leagues.

Another forward on the move up the Watchlist is Man United’s Anthony Martial, who registered 12 points in the 2-1 win against Swansea thanks to a goal, assist and full bonus. Louis van Gaal’s side do only face two home clashes over the coming period (new, liv, SOT, STO, che, sun), but, available for just 7.6 in FPL, the France international is another who could be seen as a viable differential option, with his ownership standing at 7%. It does remain to be seen whether the new-found attacking intent seen over the last two matches can be maintained for a sustained period, though.

With four home matches in the next six (CPL, LEI, wba, whm, NOR, LIV), Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew clings onto his place towards the foot of our ladder. The 5.5-rated forward is available again after missing the 3-1 defeat to Sunderland due to suspension, and while the Ghanaian is unlikely to capture the imagination of Fantasy bosses due to the current predicament at Villa Park, he could continue to surprise as a budget option.

Stoke’s Bojan hold station in the final spot on the Watchlist, having managed a reasonable two goals and as many assists over the last four Gameweeks. The former Barcelona attacker offers brilliant value at just 5.2 in FPL, but his prospects are dented somewhat by a pretty testing upcoming schedule (NOR, ARS, lei, mun, EVE, bou), while the fact he’s been substituted around the hour-mark in his last two appearances is also a cause for concern.

Question regarding the possible GW 25 DGW...

If Liverpool and Everton get through:

Everton will play Stoke and Liverpool with both games being away games?
Liverpool will play Sunderland and Everton at home?

If Man City and Liverpool get through:

    Liverpool will stay the same?
Man City will play Leicester at home and Newcastle away?

I know there's also the possibility of Stoke but more unlikely than the other three.

If Stoke get through they have two home games and one of them is against Villa.

If I'm correct then Stoke and City would be the best result FPL speaking right?

    http://afriquefoot.rfi.fr/20160107-joueur-africain-annee-2015-pierre-emerick-aubameyang-detrone-yaya-toure-ballon

The midfielder Yaya Toure, captain of the Ivory Coast team who were crowned 2015 Africa Cup of Nations champions, has described being beaten into second place for African Player of the Year this Thursday by Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang -- who has shone in European club football -- as "pathetic". "I'm incredibly, incredibly disappointed," the Manchester City player said, as reported Friday on the Radio France Internationale website. "It's sad to see Africa reacting like this, assigning zero importance to African matters!" Aubameyang has had a fantastic year with German club Dortmund, but he was eliminated along with Gabon in the first round of the ACN 2015, which was won by an Ivory Coast team led by Toure.

The Mancunian, for his part, had a less spectacular 2015 at his club. "I think this is something that brings shame on Africa," he added. "Because carrying on like this is indecent! But what can you do? We Africans, we're not showing that Africa is important in our eyes. We're privileging the outside world over our own continent. That's what's so sad about this!" Aubameyang was voted African Player of the Year for the first time, ahead of Toure -- the previous holder who has won the title four times, a record he shares with Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o -- and Ghana's Andre Ayew.

      Cash

the lack of Everton alternatives is the kicker for me. They HAVE to attack because they can't defend....and Barkley is not my cup of tea.

simply put Deulofeu and Barkley can not keep pace with Lukaku

still not a very easy decision to make. not cut and dry at all.

I worry about getting Alli as 5th mid as it would mean Lukaku benched the next 2 (Mahrez 4th mid). Surely if I'm benching Lukaku, I should get Kane and downgrade to Lukaku after the next if necessary?

Last season really doesn't matter, compare their goa and assist returns and goals scored away from home also. Lukaku has far more pace and far better touch under pressure than Kane.

  14. Shifty
    • 12 Years
    10 years, 3 months ago

Very stuck with this and appreciate some thoughts

To go with Aguero and Ighalo up top....

    A) Kane + 4.3m 5th mid (Barry or Surman)

    B) Lukaku + Alli as 5th mid - probably asking for trouble re: benching/rotations with Alli/Mahrez/Lukaku...as right away Lukaku might be benched for next 2 GWs due to fixtures. But this gives better depth

Tough, I'd say a but b is appealing

      1. Shifty

        10 years, 3 months ago

fwiw I have more tied up with Kane....got Lukaku late. So there's that as well.

And if I've really made a mess of the decision and go with A, can always downgrade Kane > Lukaku and get Alli as well after next 2 games if Lukaku and Alli continue their form.

        Tough one!

            That's the reasoning for A....but there's also reasoning for B 🙂

Lukaku best and most consistent option for Everton, a team that has to attack because they can't defend for nuts. Kane is a team player, sacrifices his own position if he has to. Unlike Everton, Spurs can defend and will defend if they need to, with Kane already dropping deep on many occasions. Alli offers great points potential @ his price 😕

I think we are going to need cash in our front 7's soon so I'd go for a cheap 5th regardless (Is Stannis still nailed?)

It's difficult between Kane and Lukaku, I prefer Lukaku, I think.

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 3 months ago

Yea a 3rd option would be Lukaku + 4.3m and risk going without Spurs attack altogether. I am already doubling up on Spurs defence - a triple up could be on the cards 😆

My 5th mid would just be Barry. Nailed, decent delivery, has a shot in him, 4.2.

      b. Benching headache isn't a problem. I rather have it - you can rotate squad for difficult fixtures, and injuries happen so rather have a strong 8 than a string 7.

De Alli - provides some converge for not have Kane.

If you actually play FIFA you would realise that ratings mean nothing, players like Doumbia and Ibarbo are better than players like Lewandowski. Ratings do not reflect real life, why is Mahrez 73 rated then?

Yep. Watched him semi-regularly in his loan stint at Schalke. He wasn't a regular though, and that's pretty much the only first-team football he's had since his Mainz 05 days.

He's probably an improvement on what they have. Dominant in the air, but he's pretty slow and turns like a tractor.

Personally don't understand people's logic that he "must be good because he was on Bayern's books". They signed him to be nothing more than a pointless backup.

            Don't know what that means.

But I did check Costa's stats in the last 3 (2 basically) against the likes of Lukaku, Kun, Giroud and they are as good if not better.

Not any real captaincy contender this week in my team, only KDB and Lukaku maybe.

Have to take a hit because I used my FT for Hendo > Payet early in the week.

    Evening all.

Assuming big bad Rom is fit. Ighalo > Aguero worth a -4?

Would give me Kun(c) - Lukaku - Kane

If you have very little tied up in Lukaku then this could work, but it is not an approach I am in favour of

People just assume tough fixture = blanks

Form players score regardless of fixtures

        See Vardy
        See Ighalo

Lukaku is arguably THE form striker in the league right now, and just scored against City

Hmm, don't like planning future transfers. Plus I've had Rom for ages so would lose a bunch of cash doing that.

We miss Cazorla dearly, we've been a step below since he got injured. He makes the whole team better playing CM and well Ramsey makes himself look better at CM. Also Walcott has a horrible tendency to look lost playing on the wings often for 45 minutes at a time. We don't play looking for him as a classic winger and he doesn't drift in for central interplay enough. He's in my top dozen mids for fpl but alas we can only have 5.

With Sanchez back soon there's a chance Walcott could be rotated with Ox/Joel. For me Walcott is the better of the 3 and offers more of an attacking threat and should start. However, Santi/Coq could be back in the coming 3-4 weeks which could mean one of them playing in the middle with Ramsey moving out wide. Wenger seems to like Ramsey in that position.

Should keep his place over Ox and Campbell with Sanchez back. When Cazorla and Wilshere return, that's another story, Ramsey moves to the flank and Walcott competes with Giroud.

I think the Kane v Lukaku debate (if you plan to sell one for Aguero) comes down to a matter of preference

I prefer Lukaku, especially as he appears to have added the consistency of returns that had previously been lacking, and has a much higher goal involvement than Kane (and Everton have actually scored more than Spurs)

who knows, but I learnt a lesson from Kane last season

Jump off if/when he starts to slow down (as many are with Vardy), don't try to anticipate it

Ighalo has scored v Pool, Chelsea and Spurs and got an assist v United

I've posted it before but worth doing it again.

I've no idea where this Lukaku tough fixtures lark is coming from. Move the ticker on two weeks and hit the sort by difficulty and there they are...right at the top. Three good home games out of four for those fixtures to start with is quite nice as well.

Yep. That and the fact I really don't think they're that concerned as a team with CS's. They seem more concerned with "we'll score one more goal than you"....or two more in their case.
