Our weekly members article, focusing on the Gameweek captain conundrum, has undergone some minor surgery this week.

The structure remains the same but with added insight on the specifics involving those players and teams involved at the very top of our current Captain Poll.

We check in on Rate My Team’s reckoning as usual, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in the light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

We’re currently witnessing an almighty tussle at the top of our Captain Poll, with Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Man City’s Sergio Aguero at loggerheads with 36% and 29% of the vote respectively.

Kane currently edges the duel ahead of Tottenham’s home tie with Sunderland, although the lead has swapped hands several times in the last 24 hours.

Dimitri Payet is riding a wave of confidence following his spectacular contribution to West Ham’s midweek victory at Bournemouth and that’s enough for him to be elevated to third in our poll. However, the Hammers’ playmaker earns just 9% of the vote, considerably less than the aforementioned strike duo.

Further down the list, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez is backed for a return to form ahead of his trip to basement-dwellers Aston Villa, while Kevin de Bruyne and Dele Alli provide midfield alternatives to cover Spurs and City’s attacking returns – they’re currently claiming just 3% and 2% of the current vote.

Are the current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for the last four matches and throw some light on the situation.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Is Matt Targett now an option guys or will he be a huge rotation risk?

Chances are he could play his way back into the team after that performance , at 3.7 great way to build money in the bank

Why did he play during the week? Was he filling in for an injury?

Differential is key for me now because everybody basically has the same team and our most important expensive players are blanking more than they should. I'm slipping because of it and now I'm down to 26k overall. I have kane-lukaku-ighalo. I can't trust aguero unless he scores in back to back games. He Costs too much to take risks on him

    2. Garlana
      10 years, 9 months ago

Its not a terrible idea, plus a Monday captain is always something nice to hold on for. His last few blanks are of slight concern but from my experience, I've capped him 3/4 times....he only blanked once in them. Do you not have the likes of kane or Aguero? or are you just looking for a differential?

I've benched Barkley this week anyway, so if I swap for Payet, I open up a whole new can of worms! Maybe I'll just stick and put a tenner on Payet anytime goalscorer:-)

I've got Willian and even though he's the easiest way out, I don't want to sell because then your team becomes like everyone else. And Willian is on form, playing really. I'd switch Barkley out - especially if you have Lukaku.

I was all set on a little Targett OOP punt. Why does team news section assume Koeman will revert to 4-4-2 again having finally returned to winning ways at 3-5-2, and Targett being a key part of this?

    1. Simon Says...

Depends. That change was made partly because they were playing watford who play two up top. So depends if he sticks with it.

2 up top is a very loose term these days. You can argue Deeney plays in the hole/up top in the same way you can with most players in that position. It is a very slim margin.
